  • Li & Fung – Operations , Emerging Supply Chain Changes & More…

li and fung All of us in the apparel / textile industry  surely know about Li & Fung Limited – the global trading group supplying high-volume, time-sensitive consumer goods.    Garments make up a large part of the Li & Fung business which also covers the sourcing of hard goods such as fashion accessories, furnishings, gifts, handicrafts, home products, promotional merchandise, toys, sporting goods and travel goods. But do we know enough about this company ?

    Let’s see !!

    • Li & Fung is a $15 billion company.
    • It is headquartered in Hong Kong  and orchestrates some 14,000 factories in China and around the world.
    • It has around 15,000 employees, and operates a sourcing network of over 80 offices covering over 40 economies across North America, Europe and Asia.
    • It is targeting a profit of over $1.5 billion by 2013 and a return on equity in double digits. walmart and li and fung
    • Li & Fung’s recently acquired  of  Loyaltex  Apparel, Collection 2000 and Exim Designs among five new companies .Turnover  and profit before tax  of the five newly acquired companies were approximately US$660 million  and  US$80 million  respectively .
    • Walmart is set to become its biggest client
    • liz clairborne and li and fungLiz Claiborne recently decided to sell its sourcing operations—which handle all aspects of production, from finding materials to manufacturing garments—to  Li & Fung Group for $83 million. Liz Claiborne still does the design and marketing for brands such as Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, and Lucky Brand jeans.
    • Talbots announced its intention to make Li & Fung its main global sourcing agent.
    • It has also taken over production for Toys ‘R’ Us, Timberland, and Sanrio, the Japanese merchandiser of Hello Kitty. Customer list is

Actually if we want to put it another way , Li & Fung is involved in the production of 40-50% of the clothes that you find in any US shopping mall – as mentioned by Forbes.com . It supplies to over 2000 customers including Kohl’s, Abercrombie & Fitch and others…

    • Inspite of the recession ,  it still gets 62% of its revenue from the American market.

How Li & Fung manages the relations with such a huge number of suppliers ?

Li & Fung tries to foster a long term win-win relation with the factories it works with. It follows the 30:30 rule . They guarantee that they will take at least 30% of the production but never more than 70% !. This is unique because they do not want the factory to be overdependent on them and works with other clients too ..  Thus it tries to maintain a very organic and strong yet not overwhelming relation with its suppliers.

Is the Supply Chain Model going to undergo a change ?

Li & Fung has been following , like most others, the traditional supply chain model .The supply chain model to date goes like this:

    • Asia makes stuff and provides cheap labor;
    • Developed nations buy it all.

That supply chain pecking order, which took decades to  set down , is going to change in a big way, according to Victor Fung, group chairman of Li & Fung.

“For the first time, demand is coming from countries that were traditional producers,” explained Fung. “That means it’s a much more nuanced world. It’s a total shift in how the supply chain operates. You’ll be sourcing everywhere and selling everywhere.”

At the recent IBM’s Think conference in New York, he said economies and their associated supply chains will have to adjust to one key reality: Demand won’t be onshore in the U.S. and other developed economies.

As per the Chairman Fung :

    • China won’t be the cheapest place to manufacture goods in the world.
    • A supply chain restructuring will distribute work more evenly around the world.
    • The supply chain is at an inflection point where costs take a back seat to speed and a fast order cycle.

Referring to the US he said, “The supply chain will move closer to you and pull jobs back into the country…”.

He is probably right . Sales in China grew to $526 million, or 6 percent of Li & Fung revenue, in the first half of the current year from less than 1 percent the year before !! This clearly shows that global supply chain is going to undergo a radical change and countries like China would become important consumers themselves forcing supply chain masters like Li & Fung to source as well supply to these places. The next two countries where their activities may be focused in the future could be India , Brazil and Russia – ie all the BRIC countries . These are the countries which are showing the fastest increase in demand growth .

  • Bayer CropScience and Olah Inc. sign unique licensing agreement on cotton brands FiberMax® and Stoneville®

    image image

Bayer CropScience and New York-based textile and apparel company Olah Inc. (owners of the famous KINPGINS SHOW )  have signed a licensing agreement to use the Bayer CropScience cotton brand names FiberMax® and Stoneville®. Under this ten-year agreement, Olah has been granted an exclusive license to develop and market the two brands for apparel and home furnishings. The agreement covers initially North America, Mexico and Japan and can be extended to more countries. It also includes the right to sublicense the brand names to other manufacturers. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
Both FiberMax and Stoneville cotton brands are well-known in the cotton and apparel industries, and each offers a unique quality profile that is appealing to different segments of the textile industry. FiberMax is high quality, long-staple upland cotton mainly grown in the United States that is ideally suited for finished goods that require finer yarns for manufacturing. Such products include t-shirts, chinos, towels and bedsheets . Stoneville cotton is strong and suitable for use in heavier weight fabrics and apparel including rugged outdoor work, sports and casual wear such as jeans.
As a result of this agreement, for the first time, consumers will be able to purchase cotton garments or home furnishing goods labeled as manufactured with FiberMax or Stoneville cotton. This branding approach will benefit consumers in two major ways.

    • Firstly, consumers will know immediately that the fabrics have been manufactured from high-quality cotton fiber.
    • Secondly, FiberMax and Stoneville goods will be identified with cotton growers from different areas, answering the consumer’s growing desire for information about the origin of the products they buy.

“Together, Olah Inc. and Bayer CropScience will create a unique connection between cotton producers, spinners, merchants, textile manufacturers, retailers and consumers,” said Joachim Schneider, Head of the BioScience business group at Bayer CropScience. “And Bayer CropScience will continue to invest heavily in growing its cotton business, including new research and development innovations targeted at improving fiber quality, yields and stress tolerance.”
“This agreement provides us with the means to develop new products for today’s consumers using best-in-class technology, production techniques and style,” said Olah Inc.’s CEO Andrew Olah. “At the same time it grants us the ability to document the origin of the cotton used in our apparel and home furnishing products on a mass scale, thus providing consumers with transparency that is revolutionary in today’s apparel business.”

  • Denim Trends Guide S/S’09 by Shopbop

Here is the Denim Trends Guide from Shopbop.com for the Spring/Summer 2009 .

The video guide features jeans from major brands like :

    AG

    Current/Elliot

     Genetic

    J Brand

    Joe’s  Jeans

    Paige Denim

    Siwy  and more….

Most Visible Styles In the Video

    1. Boyfriend Jeans – As expected every brand worth its salt is coming out with Boyfriend Jeans and Shorts.
    2. Skinny Jeans – Still refuses to die out and keeps emerging in new forms like ‘Slouchy Skinny’  which is a cross between Skinny and Boyfriend styles.
    3. Straight Denim is still going strong.

Ripped, Torned , Acid washed and Frayed are the wash effects/finishes that are most suggested.  In fact we are probably seeing more of Ripped effects in various brands this year than they were last year.

And for the sophisticated,  White Denim  (clean/ripped) is recommended for wearing in day or night.

  • Pepe Jeans Spring/Summer 2009 – behind the scenes and more -Video

Here is a video on behind the scenes look at the shoot of ‘Pepe Jeans’ Spring/Summer 2009 denim collection. The models are Giedre Dukauskaite and Sean Opry. Though not much can be seen about the details of denims , they seem to have used a lot of ‘White Bleached Denim’ for their collection.

  • Search Denim jobs, brands, buyers, blog and forum posts etc

What do you do when :

a)You need to find about Denim brands or
b)You need to find Denim buyers to sell your fabric and garments or
c)You need to study about the Trends in Denim or
d)You need a job related to Denim in(say) New York or Delhi or
e)You have any other denim related queries..
f)You need to buy a particular style of a jeans brand but do not know where to buy from.

Well, for me, I used to go to Google and hope to find some answer. Or I would to visit some denim forums or blogs and try to search them individually. By the time I would find any answer, I would be totally exhausted and probably give up many times..

As I earlier mentioned, it seems to be much easier to SEARCH ANYTHING ON DENIM ..
Just visit the at Denim Search Engine . I use it regularly for searching various denim related articles and I thought it might come in handy to others as well..This engine SEARCHES ONLY DENIM RELATED WEBPAGES

How do I use this Search Engine ?

a)To find which Denim Brands(well known) has created Color Jeans,I would just
make a search ‘Color’ and click on ‘DENIM BRANDS’ label in the search results
and I would know that the brands that have come out with color denims.

b)If I need to find a job in New York for a denim designer, I would just search ‘NewYork Designer’ and in the search result, I would CLICK on ‘DENIM JOBS’ label and instantly get this list of denim jobs in USA.
c)Buyers –Since nobody employed me 🙂 , I decided to export some denims to USA and searched ‘USA’ and in the search results, I clicked on ‘DENIM BUYERS’ and I found a long list of buyers (on various sites) who had current enquiries on denim.
d)Recent articles : I sometimes need to know what kind of posts people are making about various brand names. But it is difficult to find in reverse order – the date of posts . Now, suppose in this engine, I search for ‘DVB’..In the search results, I click on ‘RECENT4) and I get the latest posts related to DVB brand. It kind of enables one to keep track of what people are saying about your brand. Also I can check out if some top news sites have made a mention regarding DVB and I click on the label ‘TOP NEWS SITES’ and I find that Reuters had a news item on them recently.
e)Denim Blogs : It is interesting to search any term and then click on ‘DENIM BLOGS’ label in the search results. It gives an idea what top denim bloggers (including myself 🙂 ) think about that search term..No need now to search all these different blogs to find any relevant articles.

Now the Denim Search Engine Search box is available right here on our site. On the right panel, you willl see the search box . Just make any search on Denim and use the Labels like ‘Denim Blogs’, ‘Buy Jeans’ etc to refine the results.
