  • India Denim Exports 2014

    India Denim Exports 2014

India has been exporting denim fabrics to various destinations around the world. The current capacity of Indian denim fabric manufacturing stands at over 1 billion mtrs p.a – though actual production quantities are lower due to various reasons. Major part of this production goes for domestic market or for domestic consumption for conversion into garments for export. However, there is also a good quantity which is being shipped directly in the fabric form to various countries around the world.

In this report from our data section, we will cover :

    a) The quantities that have been shipped by Indian companies to overseas markets in last 12 months – Oct’13 to Sept’14
    b) Average prices of such exports for all the four quarters.
    c) Most important 5 markets to which these exports are being made currently . An indepth look into the quantities being shipped to these markets and the trends thereof.
    d) Average prices of such exports to these markets.

We look below at the total quantities that have been shipped out by Indian companies out of India during the period Oct’13 to Sept’14

Total Exports of Denim Fabrics From India Oct’13 to Sept’14

    image

From the above data from our Data section , we can note that the actual shipment of denim fabrics has increased considerably in last four quarters. Whereas in the Oct-Dec’13 it was about 24 million mtrs, it is now about 32 million mtrs in July-Sept’14 period. The shipments have been increasing as we see an increase in production capacities with different mills in India and also with new mills coming up. The domestic market, though big, is unable to absorb all the production and the companies have to find a way to increase their exports.

The average prices, when seen as a whole are more or less same at about $2.80 with a few cents here and there. So we do not see much movement in prices .

Now lets see how Indian exports fare in different markets.  Lets look at exports to Bangladesh first –

    Shipments to Bangladesh

    image

The exports to Bangladesh in the last one year are about 55 million mtrs. The average price is over $3.00/mtr which is higher than the average price of all exports which is about $2.80/mtr. Bangladesh is taking about 40% of all Indian denim fabric exports and is the number one market for Indian exporters.

    Shipments to Egypt

    image

Egypt is another good market for Indian fabrics. Though not as big as Bangladesh, it still imported about 8 million mtrs from India in last one year . The average prices are highly fluctuating and going from $2.46 to $3.00 – indicating that increase in volumes results in lower prices.

    Shipments to Colombia

    image

Colombia is an emerging market for Indian fabrics. From very low volumes last year, the exports touched 2.7 million mtrs in second quarter of 2014. The prices , though are still not so good and it seems that Indian mills are catering to the lower end of the market as Colombia does buy good priced fabrics too.

    Shipments to Sri Lanka
    image

Sri Lanka has been an old and consistent market for Indian fabrics. The volumes do not go beyond a particular point but still there is regular volume and India shipped over 4 million mtrs to Sri Lanka in last 12 months.  The average prices are touching the average attained by Indian fabrics in all markets.

    Shipments to Lesotho

    image

Lesotho is a non-traditional market for Indian fabrics and takes up decent quantities touching over 4.5 million mtrs. The prices of such exports are very low and range around $2.25 /mtr.

Once the doyen of all exporters from India, Turkey gives a sad picture with meagre exports less than even 4 million mtrs in 12 months. The Turkish import duties killed the market and Indian exporters could never recover. The prices, though , are still the best that one can get anywhere else.

The Indian exports are expected to increase as domestic production increases and the mills rush around the world to see the markets. There are not many emerging markets left , though.

AFM combines fashion fabrics with over 4,000 years of indigo dyeing history in Indus Valley, Pakistan and invites the world design community to explore the lost indigo history of South Asia. • Yoga Pants And Athleisure To Give Tough Time To Denim?

Yoga Pants And Athleisure To Give Tough Time To Denim?

Denim is irreplaceable ! There is nothing which can match denim’s versatility and popularity .. We all believe this and want to continue believing this . But there are other competing products which are definitely catching up and trying to give denim a run for its money !

Athleisure :Clothing that combines athletic wear and leisurewear and go seamlessly from the workplace to the gym, from sitting to skipping, from meetings to marching ,from party to office and includes a whole lot of wear gear including yoga pants, leggings,. The Athleisure trend is catching on , specially in the US. As per NPD group , US, the sale of activewear including yoga pants , leggings etc climbed 7% for year ended June 2014 to $33 billion. For the same period  , the sale of Jeans in US dropped 6% .

While the shift to the Athleisure clothing has been happening for many years now, it looks like it might get more pronounced now  with comfort factor becoming more important for consumers. Many retailers including Macy’s,  Foot Locker Inc., Gap Inc.’s Old Navy and Under Armour Inc have been witnessing propelling sales  thanks to more Americans wearing workout-style gear whether they’re working out or not. An increasing number of women are sporting yoga and dressy sweat pants , for men hoodies are becoming more common . Retailers like Gap pushed further to take advantage of this trend by increasing their Athleta sales and increasing the number of stores (expected to cross 100) , Urban Outfitters, Macy’s and many other retailers are pushing deeper into the category.

So what does all this mean for denim industry ?  Does it mean that the Athleisure trending will affect the sales of denim adversely?.  Denim is a very broad category and covers most segments of the population and across all genres and ages. It also has presence in the active wear category and with technological advancements, it is pushing further into this category. The popularity of super stretches with over 60% elasticity are a testament to denim making inroads here. But still denim is not a complete match when it comes to the properties of activewear and leisurewear. The industry needs to put in more efforts to bring denim to a higher level and give a stronger competition to such products. Industry wide innovations and developments are needed to take denim and its fight to increase market share to next level.

Bangladesh has become the favorite destination of the retailers and brands worldwide . While , a few years back, the country was known more as a origin for sourcing cheap garments, it has quickly scaled up the value chain and is also producing value added jeans and apparel using skills and technology from around the world. The country is not only able to import fabrics and accessories from factories around the world, but its textile industry base is increasingly supporting its garment export sector. Its current denim fabric production covers about 40% of its requirements.

Some figures related to denim exports from Bangladesh from our data section  . ” While Bangladesh exported about 74 million pieces of denim apparel to US in 2013, it shipped around 140  million pieces of jeans to Europe. It was actually the largest exporter of men’s jeans to Europe in 2013  with   89 million pcs compared to 65 million pcs from China. Also notable is the growth achieved in exporting these products in 2013 despite a lot of disturbances. The denim apparel exports  from Bangladesh surged by 11.48% to US in 2013 over 2012 and to EU by over 19.65% in the same period . This is not a mean achievement and speaks volumes about the efforts put in by the garment and textile industry of Bangladesh and the continued trust reposed by the buyers”.

  • Germany – Imports of Denim Jeans | 2010-2014

Germany – Imports of Denim Jeans | 2010-2014

Germany is the largest market for denim jeans and apparel in Europe . It has a strong affiliation for jeans , specially men’s jeans , and is importing them from not only around the world but also from within EU27.  No exporter , whether outside or inside EU , can ignore the German market due to its sheer size.

We will look in this report the following :

    a) Imports of denim jeans made into Germany from EU27 , 2010-2014
    b) Imports of denim jeans made into Germany from out of EU27 , 2010-2014
    c)
Total quantities of jeans coming into Germany during this time.
    d) Average prices coming from these regions during 2010-2014 period.
    e) Trends in quantity and prices  from these two origins and their comparison. Which of them gets an  increasing share of the market now?
    f) Tables , graphs and explanations.

    [private_special]

If we look at the table below, we will find that Germany has imported more jeans in 2010 – 169 million pcs – than it imported in 2013  – 158 million pcs. This shows a fall in total imports of jeans coming into Germany , which is not a very good sign for denim exporters. But more interesting is to note that the jeans coming from out of EU have declined while those coming from EU27 have increased during the same period.  In 2010 , about 135 million pcs came from out of EU27. However, in 2013 we find only 114 million pcs of  jeans coming from out of EU27 .

The imports from EU27 have, on the other side, increased from 34 million pcs to 44 million pcs.  The market share of EU27 in German jeans market has increased from 20% in 2010 to about 29% in 2014. This shows an increasing tendency of Germans to import jeans from within EU. But we need to also remember that all of these jeans coming from within EU may not be actually made in EU and some of them may have been imported into those countries and re exported to Germany. But when we look at the price comparison, we will have a better idea . The following graph shows the increasing trend of imports from within EU27 as compared to rest of the world.

% Imports from EU27 and out of EU 27

denim imports into germany 2010 to 2014

    Prices of Imports

Now let us look at the prices of imports of denim jeans into Germany from EU and from rest of the world. Lets have a look at the table below :

Year Import Prices from out of EU27 Import prices from EU27
    2010 7.1 17.5
    2011 7.7 16.7
    2012 8.5 16.3
    2013 8.7 16.4
    2014 8.7 16.5

prices of denim imports in germany

The prices of jeans coming into Germany is , surprisingly, showing a reverse trend. The prices of jeans coming from EU27 has fallen from Euro 17.5/pc in 2010 to Euro 16.5/pc in 2014.  On the other hand the prices coming from rest of the world has increased from Euro 7.1 to Euro 8.7 / pc.  So on the one hand the price of jeans from EU27 has fallen by about 6% , that from the rest of the world has increased by over 20% . This is a significant increase and we can see that the trend of price increase is continuous through all years . This also signifies that EU27 imports into Germany are now more competitive and hence getting a higher share into German market , whereas the rest of the world is getting expensive (relatively) and not able to retain as much share of the market.

This is good news for EU27 and shows that even with higher prices they are able to get an increasing share of the market . Also shows that near sourcing for quick fashion is very important for German market as well and enables them to buy at double the prices of imports , which have a much higher lead times involved.

  • Madagascar Reinstated Into AGOA For Duty Free Imports Into US

agoa AGOA is a U.S. preferential trade program established in May 2000 that provides duty-free access to the $3 trillion U.S. market for thousands of products from eligible sub-Saharan African countries.   One goal of AGOA is to support sub-Saharan African economic development through trade and investment.  The program offers tangible incentives to sub-Saharan African countries for undertaking difficult political and economic reforms that promote long-term growth and development.  Madagascar was removed from AGOA on January 1, 2010 following a 2009 coup d’état by which the democratic govt. was overthrown.  Swaziland , has however, been removed from the beneficiary list of AGOA countries.

Successful elections in late 2013 led to the formation of Madagascar’s first democratic government since the 2009 coup.  The United States has taken steps to normalize relations with Madagascar, lifted all coup-related restrictions on direct assistance to the Malagasy government, and invited President Rajaonarimampianina to attend the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington in August.

    Swaziland

The decision to withdraw Swaziland’s AGOA eligibility comes after years of engaging with the Government of the Kingdom of Swaziland on concerns about its implementation of the AGOA eligibility criteria related to worker rights.  After an extensive review it was decided by the US govt. that the country no longer should be included in the list of beneficiary countries.
The latest updated list of AGOA countries includes the following names :

Angola,Benin,Botswana,Burkina Faso,Burundi,Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Comoros,Congo (DROC),Congo (ROC), Djibouti , Ethiopia,Gabon, Gambia ,Ghana ,Guinea ,Guinea-Bissau , Kenya , Lesotho,Liberia ,Madagascar ,Malawi,Mali ,Mauritius ,Mozambique , Namibia,Niger ,Nigeria ,Rwanda ,Sao Tome & Prin ,Senegal,Seychelles , Sierra Leone, South Africa ,Tanzania ,Togo ,Uganda and Zambia

The inclusion of Madagascar in the list of AGOA countries will enable it to import fabrics from outside AGOA and use it for manufacturing garments for duty free exports to US. This should enable the country to regain its exports to US which had been stalled for last 3-4 years and could push up the exports of all apparel (including denim) from AGOA to US since Madagascar had been an important constituent of this region.  Exports of denim apparel from AGOA had peaked in 2005 when the country used to export sizeable qty of about 40 million pieces and thence it has only declined its volumes of exports to less than half with increasing competition from Asian countries.

But really, would this change make an immediate impact for Madagascar. We spoke to few people in the AGOA region to understand whether it would really help the country to work up  its exports to US.  Denim Specialist Vinay Narisimlu from Mauritius says :

“With the withdrawal of AGOA benefits, many export units in Madagascar had closed down. Those which did not , started exploring the European markets and  in the last 3-4 years have completely oriented their productions and systems towards these higher margin but low volume region. The companies to again focus towards the US markets may not be easy and the US markets may be better served by reopening of some of the units which closed down before….”

It remains to be seen if Madagascar really gets any benefit from the decision of the US govt. But surely , it will be helpful for the buyers from US to again relook at this country with interest.

As seen in the table above, China remains the highest exporter to US for its fabrics – though it is estimated that much of this fabric goes for re-export to Latin American countries. Mexico , Japan, Taiwan and Italy come next in the rankings and export some quantities (not large) to US. These fabrics are mainly used for premium denim products made in US. But as we can see that the imports have been falling continuously for a few years and this is reflective of the fact that the usage of imported fabrics for jeans mfg. is falling in US.

The prices from different destinations to US are given in the following chart. As expected, Japanese prices are the highest . Turkish prices are very good and surprisingly higher than Italy. Indian prices are unexpectedly the lowest .
