  • H & M Countrywise Sales in 2012

    H & M Countrywise Sales in 2012

Unmindful of the not so inspiring economic situation in Europe, H & M is steaming ahead with continuous growth . It is conquering new territories with stores opening in different countries at rapid pace. In 2012, it opened 304 new stores (29 more than planned)  and now totals over 2776 stores in 48 countries. The new markets it entered like Bulgaria, Latvia, Malaysia, Thailand and Mexico seem to have brought good response to the retailer. The giant retailer will be opening 325 new stores in 2013 with most aggresive expansion in China and USA. New markets like Chile, Lithuania, Serbia and Indonesia (through franchise) will be explored this year. Moreover, the retailer will try to increase its sales through an online shop in USA .

With sales  touching $21 billion in 2012 , it is the second largest apparel retailer in the world after Inditex and is on a high growth path.

In the table below, we will try to understand the main markets of H & M and and how it is faring in the older and the new markets. It would be interesting to see that German maket leads other makets  of H &M by a huge margin. US comes a distant second and other markets like UK , France, Sweden , Netherlands etc follow. It is also interesting to to see that Germany gives the highest per store sale to H &M followed by  Switzerland and Austria – all countries in very close physical proximity .

  • Denim by PV : A/W 14-15 Trends -II

rFurther to our previous report on Denim by PV trends Part I, we are now updating the second part of the report.

First of all check out this presentation which will gives looks from the trend area and then we check out further what other companies have been doing.

We missed Candiani , Italy, at the show as they had set up their own show very nicely on a boat on the Seine river  on the occasion of their 75th anniversary!

Some of the trends which have been reinforced are :

a)Knit denim effect : The dobby structures are creating waves with a softer feel and higher stretch capabilities and not to speak of Knit like effect.  Knit denims are adding much desired alternative looks for denim.

b)Laser techniques : Lasers are now being extensively being used on fabrics as well as garments to bring out real special effects – including print looks. It becomes difficult to sometimes understand whether the garment is printed or lasered.

c)Flocked and jacquard denims: Floral and other patterns were created using jacquard weaving techniques and also flocking on the fabrics.  A number of companies have introduced the jacquard woven fabrics in their collection to cater to high end and fashionista brands.

d)Multi- hues : Multiple shades on the fabric using double, triple dye colors and with a mix of coating, overdyeing techniques have been created to give that pop up of contrasting colors and to enable garment to take on different hues on different levels of washing.

    Lasers by Jeanologia , Spain

Jeanologia came out with some real amazing garments looks created by laser techniques. The garments had laser cut patterns mixed with different kinds of print / distressed and other looks and it made it difficult to find if the jeans / garment was actually lasered…

    Orta Anadolu- Turkey

Orta came out with some interesting concepts:

Winter Blues :A celebration of one of the world’s oldest dyes, this fabric is yarn dyed, over-dyed and indigo coated, yielding deep blacks and dark blues with rich and vivid contrast while maintaining a natural hand-feel in rigid and stretch variations.

Dare Denim : Made with environmentally friendly processes and high-tech fibers, this fabric is sustainable and highly functional, sporting tough durability, thermo-regulation, abrasion resistance, water-repellent finishes and anti-bacterial properties.

  • Sri Lankan Denim Exports Down 34% in 2012

Sri Lanka is an important  apparel manufacturing and export center in South Asia . The nation has been exporting quality garments to major markets like US and EU over the last few decades. However, over the years, the apparel exports have reduced – while in 2000 the apparel exports were about 49% of total exports of Sri Lanka, in 2011 , the figure dropped to 38%.

Also, the last 2 years have not been very good for Sri lanka . On the one hand it lost the GSP+ facility to EU due to disagreement over certain clauses and as a result lost over $ 1 billion (estimated)  in exports, , its exports to US have also dropped. When we look at the exports of denim apparel, the scenario has worsened in 2012  with a fall of over 34% . Lets look at the chart below :

    Sri Lanka denim exports

In a single year 2012 , as compared to 2011, the exports of denim apparel to US fell about 34% . While a number of reasons have been attributed for the same – including rising labour costs and economic situation in US , the exact reasons are still to be explored. If we look at the average prices, it is surprising to see that the same to have fallen by about 5 % .

The average prices for these years were :

    2011- $8.47

    2012 – $8.07

In a following article , we will explore the causes of this fall in Sri Lankan denim exports and what are suggestions from Industry leaders. Do send us your comments regarding the same if you wish to…

  • 3.5% Fall in Denim Apparel Imports Into USA : 2012

Having received the figures for the complete year 2012, it is rather heartening to note that hte fall in imports of denim apparel in 2012 was only 3.5% less than that in 2011. The early 2012 had shown large reductions in imports and due to improved market conditions in US, these were set off in the latter part with the shortfall remaining at only about 3.5% . Going by the way the market has picked up , it would not be an improbability that 2013 may show higher imports than 2012 and 2011. Time will tell..

Here are the figures for imports in 2011 and 2012. While the total denim apparel imports in 2011 were about 520 million pieces, the imports in 2012 came to  about 503 million pieces. The value of the imports also fell from $4.24 billion to $ 3.97 billion – showing  a fall in average value per piece of about 3% .

Check out the graph below :

    Denim Apparel Imports USA 2012

So, though we see fall in both prices and quantities, it still is not very negative considering that the fall in imports in 2011 compared to 2010 was about 15%. It can be safely said that the US market is recovering and we hope to see better performance this year.

  • Italian Denim Lifestyle–A note

    Italian Denim Lifestyle–A note

Cotton Inc. conducts surveys on usage of various apparel items in different countries and regions around the world. These surveys include details on consumption trends, patterns, likings , demand etc for different apparel products including denim.

In a recent survey on Italian apparel consumption (including denim)  , Cotton Inc came out with some interesting findings:

    • A majority of Italian consumers say that they love or enjoy wearing denim. As can be seen in the image below, denim is much more popular in the age group 15-34
      italian consumers denim
    • Italian consumers report owning about 13 denim garments , younger ones have 15 while older ones have 11 .
    • The wardrobe of Italian consumers is very diverse  as they dedicate less part of their wardrobe to jeans and more to other garments . Shirts /shorts and jackets are some of the other popular apparel items in Denim.Italian Denim Wardrobe
    • Purchase Drivers –The most imp purchase driver for Italian consumers has been “Quality”. Other factors like fiber content (96%) , price (95%) , performance features etc come next. Even in tough economic times, 73% of Italian consumers say they would be willing to pay more for a better-quality garment, and eight out of 10 Italian consumers are willing to pay a premium for natural fibers, like cotton.cotton fiber prefernce in EU
    • It is interesting to see that “Environmental Friendliness” coming at 5th level and “Brand Name” – much lower in the list of purchase drivers.
    • It is also interesting to see where the Italians buy their apparels from .
Unlike other developed markets, department stores and hyper markets are not as popular as Boutique Independent and Speciality shops. Though the share of independent shops has been going down in the last 4 years, but still they hold the major share of the Italian apparel market. Speciality stores are on the rise as can be seen in the chart below.

    About the Survey

In the 2012 survey, 5,000 consumers (approximately 500 in each of the 10 countries surveyed) were surveyed via telephone, face to-face interviews, and online. Respondents were male and female, aged 15 to 54.

  • SS ‘14 Denim Trends From Denim By PV

Denim by PV fair at Paris , held on Nov 28/29  ‘12 , was a successful event with a large number of visitors from around the world. The show seemed much more busier and positive than the past 3 shows and it indicated that the business in denim is reviving to some extent . I interacted with many  exhibitors and most seemed quite happy with the kind of response and visitors they got from the fair.

Some of the common trends noticed from the fair were :

    a) Colors were still strong for SS 14 but they were more toned towards pastel colors . However,   neon shades still exist in many collections.

b)Surface treatments like wax coatings, sheens, leather looks still looked strong .

    c) Coatings – still dominate collections of many mills – though the trend is towards finer coatings which add to color depth without being too prominent.

    d) Textured denims – are strong with companies playing with different textures and weaves including dobbies, jacquards etc.

We spoke to many mills and we are bringing herewith some videos of those discussions and of course images from the show accompany. At the end is a presentation on the looks and trends from the show. (Be patient while going through this  article as it is going to take some time !!. “Presently at Arvind , we see that while the core and classic denim would still rule the staple segment in each wardrobe  there is a high inclination towards fashion denim in the updated basic category and a key item of purchase as a second or third pair of jeans. The consumer who has already his/her basic pair of jeans is now looking for newness and that is answered by Fashion denim or special jeans which are eco friendly or have some performance element built in. The Arvind SS’14 (European)  collection remains true to the soul of Summer Denim with light weights for men and women in fresh colors and interesting fiber blends of cotton and linen. The Fashion denim group has many new and already tested denims in colors , reverse colors and reverse side prints.”

The AVATAR group of denim retain the soul of a classic denim and present themselves in a new avatar to suit the factionists craving for high fashion in denim. The treatments with multiple combinations in yarn, dyeing, fine leather coatings and finishes.  The SS’14 collection also offers the updated CLASSIC colection.

  • US Imports of Denim Apparel Recovers a Little

The US Imports of denim apparel , which was showing a decline of over 10% till May this year  compared to 2011, seem to have recovered a little . The latest figures show that the US imports of denim apparel for the period Jan- Sept. 2012 is down only by 5.8% as compared to similar period in 2011.
Though the imports are still lower than that in 2011, the reduced difference reflects a positive sentiment and an indication of better times to come in 2013.  On the ground too, the retailers are reflecting optimism and their orders too have firmed up  . On the whole, we can look forward to a better year ahead.

However, there is one downside. The average price of denim apparel, which had , till mid of this year ,  been higher than 2011, has fallen and is now about 3.45% lower than that in 2011  reducing from $7.98 to $7.71 a piece.
This is also a reflection of falling cotton prices and stronger dollar ,  but on the whole industry should not be very unhappy.

  • Sri Lanka Exports of Denim Apparel to US : 2006-2012

Sri lanka is an important apparel producing center with important apparel groups like Brandix and Hirdaramani and others who are world renowned .Sri Lanka’s apparel industry has grown to be one of the largest contributors to the export revenue of the country. The country having established itself as a reliable supplier of quality garments at competitive prices, also upholds ethical practices backed by legislation, thus being identified as a producer of “garments with no guilt” .Being the single largest employer in the manufacturing sector the apparel industry provides close to 75% of Sri Lanka’s employment either directly or indirectly. The industry has been positioned as a socially responsible and preferred destination for apparel sourcing.  Sri Lanka is also the only outsourced apparel manufacturing country in Asia having signed up to 30 of the ILO conventions. It stands out as a reliable source that pays fair wages to its workers while discouraging sweat shops and child labor in its businesses.

Apparel exports from Sri Lanka is over $6 billion . But the share of denim apparel exports is a small part of this total . Though exports to EU are still higher, exports to US are limited. Lets look at the figures of exports of  all denim apparel to US for the period 2006-12.

    Sri Lanka denim exports

The exports to US have hardly crossed 10 million pieces in a year since 2006 and have been continously falling since 2010. The year 2012 is no better either . For the period 2011 (Jan-August) the exports have been about 5 million pieces while those in the same period in 2012 have been about 3 million pieces. This shows a sharp fall of 40% ! .
Sri Lanka is in no position to compete with other Asian countries like Bangladesh , China and Indonesia and it is able to serve the higher end of the market only. The average prices for the last 2-3 years have been over US $ 8 /piece.
