With reasonable pricing and great supply chain distribution, H&M has been giving tough competition to its rival fast fashion brand Inditex. Zara, one of the leading labels from Inditex has not been able to grow this way as H&M has been growing in emerging developing countries. But it is not to say that H&M is not facing its own share of problems including excess stocks which it needs to dispose off. Time will tell !

Bangladesh Vs Pakistan – Denim Exports To EU From 2016 To 2018

In this report, we’ve analyzed the trend of Denim Jeans from Bangladesh and Pakistan to the EU for the years 2016 to 2018 to understand how these both important countries are performing when it comes to their most important market ie the EU.

Pakistan and Bangladesh both enjoy GSP benefit to EU and this has helped them to take a major share of market away from China which was the previous holder of major share in this market. We try to understand how these countries have developed their exports to the EU during these 3 years

Jeans Exported To EU By Bangladesh (BD) And Pakistan (PK) During 2016-18

By the end of the year 2018, the total denim exports by Bangladesh to the EU stood at 238.66 million pcs, which is 14% more than the export of 2016 and 11% more than 2017. Pakistan, on the other hand, exported 105.6 million pcs of denim to the EU by the end of 2019 which is only 2% higher than the export of 2016. The year 2018 also witnessed a marginal decline of 3.94 lacs pcs in the export from 2017.

14% Rise In Bangladeshi Denim Exports To EU, May Achieve Export Of 25 Million Pcs By The End Of 2019

Average Price (Euro/Pc) Of Jeans Exported

Bangladesh is one of the cost-competitive countries and due to various factors like lower costs, efficiencies and large capacities, the country has been exporting denim at very competitive prices. Bangladesh exported its Jeans at an  average price of Euro 5.71/pc in 2018 whereas Pakistan exported at Euro 7.03/Pc. Though the prices cannot strictly be compared unless there is a comparison of types of products exported, their complexities, volumes,  qualities, types of buyers etc but on broader terms, Bangladesh’s prices were lower than that of Pakistan.

Another interesting fact to note is that both countries have become more competitive in terms of price over a period of three years and we can see the changes in the below table and graphs.Increased competition among themselves and with countries like Vietnam and Ethiopia with a better geographical dividend and huge FDIs in past years made the trade little more intense. It is a reflection of a sad fact of our industry that with each passing year we are actually reducing the prices whereas the costs of production are going up ! .This also reflects that our industry is oversaturated with supply far exceeding the demand.

Jeans – Women & Men, Exported To EU By Bangladesh (BD) And Pakistan (PK) During 2016-18

Interesting to note that Pakistan is more focused on Men’s jeans with its Men jeans volume being almost double than that of women. However, in the period of 2016-28, the %age of women jeans is slowly increasing but its exports are still majorly dominated by Men’s Jeans.

Bangladesh also exports more Men’s jeans but their gap between the two is not so much. The exports of Men’s jeans was about 50% more than that of Women’s in 2016 whereas in 2018 it is about 30% more. So Bangladesh has probably better adapted to women jeans production over the years taking a major share away from China which was the major exporter of Women jeans.

But the drop in prices of women denim is more sharp for both the countries over a 3 year period. Bangladesh reduced its Men’s denim prices by about 6% from 2016 to 2018 whereas Pakistan reduced the prices of the same by about 5%. In Women’s denim , the reduction by BD is about 8.5% whereas that of PK is about 9% .

American Eagle Outfitters Records Sale Growth In A Disruptive Retail Environment

Fashion Retail industry is facing a major disruption with many fast fashion brands going ‘out of style’. This slump fueled by the highly unpredictable and dynamic movement of trends which is caused by social media has affected major brands such as GAP, Aeropostale,J Crew etc. But American Eagle Outfitters seems to be immune to this trend, even thriving in this environment. Recent figures unveiled by the company for Q1 2019 depict that the company is surging with outstanding numbers.

American Eagle outfitters records sale growth in a disruptive retail environment| Denimsandjeans

AEO recorded 17th consecutive quarter of positive comparable growth.

“The total revenue increased $63 million for the first quarter, rising 8% to a record $886 million. Also, comparable sales increased 6%, building on 9% growth last year” explained Robert L Madore, Executivevice president & CFO of the brand.

This growth could be partially attributed to Aerie’s (Lingerie division of AEO) marketing strategy. Aerie promotes a body positive image and uses pictures of common people actually wearing their products instead of models.

“With Aerie, we have built one of the most relevant new brands ,which is fueled by the deep emotional connection our customers have with that brand” said Jay L. Schottenstein, Executive Chairman of the board & CEO.

Aerie reported a 14% comparable sales growth built on a 38% increase last year whereas American Eagle reported a 4% increase following a 14% increase last year.

During the retailer’s quarterly earnings call with analysts, Chad Kessler, Global Brand President of AE talked about new introductions to their denim catalogue. He disclosed that they will be  launching curvy jeans for women and expanding size range to attract more customers. He also discussed about addition of new fabrics and fits to their men’s jean range.

“Our size expansion will deliver on our brand promise of inclusivity and will drive share gains by making us more relevant to more customers than ever before.”

Their growth is not limited only to brick and mortar. AEO has been able to create a 1$ billion plus digital empire which is growing rapidly. Online sales account for more than 50% of sales for American Eagle brand.

    American-Eagle-Outfitters

When asked about expansion, the brand talked about expansion of the company to markets such as Europe and collaborations in future as a way to reach new customers. Jennifer Foyle, Aerie’s Global Brand President also commented that they are excited about opening new Aerie stores around 60-75 locations this year.

The Average Price Of Eu Imports From Bangladesh, China and Pakistan

    B A N G L A D E S H

Bangladesh has been one of the most important denim sourcing locations in the world now and also on the way to become the biggest. Competitive pricing and shorter lead time are two major attributes which made this country very much attractive in the past few years, especially for the mid-range denim brands. However, the inability to cater to smaller MOQs has been becoming a serious issue for the suppliers as well as the buyers. Dependency on imported fabrics, though it is going down, and less focus on innovation and R&D might trouble Bangladesh in the longer run. The rise of Vietnamese Apparel Industry in the past 5 years and to be signed EVFTA between the EU and Vietnam might impact the prospects of Bangladesh if things will not be fixed within due time.

Bangladesh is one of the biggest suppliers to the EU countries and in 2016, the country shipped 121.6 million pcs of Men’s denim and 87.9 million pcs of Women’s denim at an average price of euro 6.30/pc and euro 6.04/pc respectively. In the year 2017, the men’s denim export saw a decline of 0.33% however the exports of women’s denim registered a surge of 6% and it reached to 93.2 million pcs.

In the year 2018, both segments have shown a good amount of growth. Men’s denim grew at 10.75% however Women’s denim outperformed this time also with a growth rate of 15%. Both segments have also maintained their respective price at a more competitive level. Men’s denim average price in 2018 was euro 5.87/pc and women’s denim average price was euro 5.51/pc.

    C H I N A

Everything is not well in China, especially with the Textile & Garment Industry. The rise in labor costs and a tariff war with the US has adversely affected Chinese Denim Industry also. Meanwhile, China has also slowly started routing its investment in countries like Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam to compensate for the losses it has been incurring due to these issues .

In 2016, the country shipped 30.08 million pcs of Men’s denim and 49.93 million pcs of Women’s denim at an average price of euro 6.99/pc and euro 6.75/pc respectively. In the year 2017, the men’s denim export saw a massive fall of 14% however the exports of women’s denim registered a surge of 2% and it reached to 50.2 million pcs.

In the year 2018, Men’s segments have shown a good amount of growth. Men’s denim grew at 25% however Women’s denim remained consistent with a growth rate of 2%. Both segments have also maintained their respective price at a more competitive level with 2018 prices slashing severely compared to 2017. This again shows the desparate situation the exporters are in .  Men’s denim average price in 2018 was euro 5.83/pc and women’s denim average price was euro 4.68/pc.

Pakistan has been consistent for the last several years, the country has started to receive the investment from Gulf Countries but any major investment in Textile & Garments Industry has not yet reported yet. However, the proposed China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) may change the prospect of Pakistan Textile & Garment Industry. Under the new leadership, the country has taken several measures in the interest of industry, the government is trying to come up with various initiatives and sops like special energy tariffs in order to cut down the production cost of export items.

Throughout the three years beginning from 2016, Pakistan maintained the export at constant, the export of Men’s denim remained around 70 million pcs and the export of women’s denim varied around 33-35 million pcs. This is not a very good sign for Pakistan as they should actually be growing quite well .

The Average Price of Denim Imports During Jan & Feb 2019

If we extrapolate the figures of imports from these 3 countries for 2019, we can conclude that the following figures of exports might be achieved in 2019 by the year end.

    • Pakistan: 76.87 million pcs (Men Denim) | 40.35 million pcs ( Women Denim) : total about 116 million pcs
    • China: 39.84 million pcs (Men Denim) | 62.65 million pcs ( Women Denim) : total about 101 million pcs
    • Bangladesh:140.59 million pcs (Men Denim) | 117.07 million pcs ( Women Denim) : 257 million pcs

So in total we see that these 3 countries will increase their exports to EU and will probably export over 470 million pcs in 2019 . That’s a huge number !

Our Ecosystem By Crescent Bahuman @ Denimsandjeans Vietnam

This June, at DenimsandjeansVietnam, Crescent Bahuman will be showcasing “Our Ecosystem“, a documentary detailing their 25 year long quest in creating, and preserving a Green Ecosystem .  It is a unique story, which depicts the remarkable transformation of marshland into South East Asia’s first vertically integrated Denim Facility.  The story emphasizes the importance of circularity and explores how man, nature, and industry can indeed coexist.

Our Ecosytem By Crescent Bahuman @ Denimsandjeans

Our Ecosytem By Crescent Bahuman @ Denimsandjeans

The  journey in Vietnam will explore 3 core strengths of CBL:

    Our Love for Nature

“This is no ordinary love story.  For 25 years, CBL has been at the forefront of sustainable technologies and practices. Being Green Screen certified and currently implementing the ZDHC program, CBL is steaming forward with its sustainability vision. Apart from various sustainable practices in the garmenting facilities, the Company has decided to attack the root of the product” – Crescent Bahuman

The sustainable product line is in alignment with their objective to:

-Reduce dependence on Cotton through using :

    a. Hemp: Antimicrobial in nature while painting a cotton like characteristic

    b. Regenerated Cellulose such as Tencel, Refibra, Modal and Viscose

    c.  iCollect certified PCW Fibres

    – Eliminate Virgin Polyester:

With strong rumours of the EU moving towards increasing duties on items containing virgin Polyester, they utilise Repreve by Unifi which creates polyester through the recycling of PET bottles

    – Conserve Water and improve reuse-ability of Indigo .

This is done  by applying :

    a. Zero Water Discharge techniques in collaboration with Dystar

    b. Hydro free Dyeing, eliminating salt formation and increasing the lifespan of the dyestuff.

    c. Quick Wash Off

    d.Delivering a 40% reduction in wash cycle

    2. Our Authenticity

    Our Authentic collection includes:

    – Reimagined Non Stretches:

    a. Shadow:

Gone are the days of tinting ! Shadow marvelously exhibits natural green caste tones the more you wash it!

    b. Light Weight, Ultra Soft:

Light weight, Soft, and authentic in appearance!

    c. OE Blends:

Paying homage to the Open End classics, we’ve gone one step further by adding blends of Viscose and Tencel

    – Authentic stretches

“The stretches have Rugged Rigid good looks with a beautiful authentic character “- Crescent Team

    3. Our Flexibility

Flexible series explores the endless possibilities of stretch starting with

    -Comfortably Affordable:

Lycra based products with good growth & recovery

    – Superior Stretches:

In the constant quest to refine the end user’s experience, CBL is currently in discussion with Invista to develop Zero pressure fabrics which would effectively eliminate hugging through 100% recovery, 0% growth

Today’s selection of Superior stretches offers CBL’s finest 40-80% stretches

    – Beyond Stretch:

Beyond stretch fabrics offer sizing flexibility with stretches of up to 150%! 150% stretch with an authentic, open structure achieved through innovation in the weaving process.
