    Columbia Denim Imports From Turkey In 2021

    Turkey is becoming one of the most important countries when it comes to the export of fabric. A number of large manufacturing units have been developed which are working for large retailers and brands. The FTA with the EU has further strengthened exports from the nation. However, Colombia continues to be the dominant region where exports are happening from Turkey. In this report, we have done a detailed analysis of the imports of fabrics from Turkey into Colombia in 2021. The detailed report shows the imports by Colombia over this period.

    We can see that Mercadeo Y Moda is the buyer who has bought the biggest quantities of denim fabric from Turkey. The average price at USD 3.48/sqm is a very good one and the company has 3 suppliers who are shipping to them . Besides , Naftalina and CI Keracol are important importers .However, the highest average price has been paid by Baguer SAS.

    Orta Anadolu from Turkey has been the biggest supplier of denim fabrics to Colombia followed by ISKO. The price of Orta is bit less than that of Isko . Also ISKO International has shipped some quantities at even higher price of USD 5/ sq mtr .

    TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO COLOMBIA

    During Jan 2021- Feb 2021, Colombia has imported approx. 12 million sqm of denim fabrics.

    INDIA  is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 5.3 million sqm at an average price of USD 1.12/sqm. CHINA is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported about 4.7 million sqm denim fabric at an average price of USD 1.56/sqm. So here it looks like China’s fabric is much more expensive than that of India.

    (Note: this data has been captured from various govt organizations including customs. the actual imports are likely to be higher than this figure. Also, we need to understand that the prices are sometimes not correct representations as in Mexico there are many suppliers under-reporting the actual price for custom benefits )

    So far as the import of denim fabric by different companies are concerned, JOHN URIBE and SURTIJEANS SA are the biggest importers of denim fabric into Colombia with a total import of about 2.1 million sqm and 0.9  million sqm of denim fabric respectively. PERMODA LTDA is the buyer which has imported the denim fabrics at the most expensive average price i.e., $2.06/sqm.

    During Dec 2020- Jan 2021, Colombia has imported approx. 10 million sqm of denim fabrics or an average of 5 million sq mtrs each month.

    INDIA  is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 3.9 million sqm at an average price of USD 1.09/sqm. CHINA is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported about 3.7 million sqm denim fabric at an average price of USD 1.55/sqm. So here it looks like China’s fabric is much more expensive than that of India.

    As far as the average price is concerned, India’s average price turned to be the lowest amongst all at $1.09/sq meter. Mexico exported the fabric at the most expensive average price of USD 2.23/Sqm. Venezuela exported the fabric at the 2nd most competitive price i.e, $1.27/sqm.

    India is at #1 with a 39.8% share and China at #2 with a 38.1% share.

    TOP DENIM EXPORTERS TO COLOMBIA

    So far as the denim exporters are concerned Zhejiang XInlan (China) and MPVR Trading (Mexico)  are the biggest exporters of denim fabric to Colombia with a total import of 0.74 million sqm and 0.7 million sqm of denim fabric respectively. MPVR Trading supplied at the most expensive average price i.e., $2.06/sqm.

    TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO COLOMBIA

    In the month of December 2020, Colombia has imported approx. 4.2 million sqm of denim fabrics. With 1.84 million sqm of denim fabric export, India strongly positioned itself as the #1 exporter of denim to Colombia, China is at #2 with 34.42% share in the total import.

    China exported 1.84 million sqm of denim fabrics at an average price of $1.51/sqm.

    As far as the average price is concerned, India’s average price turned to be least average price amongst all i.e, $1.03/sq meter. Mexico exported the fabric at the most expensive average price of USD 2.24/Sqm. Venezuela exported the fabric at the 2nd most competitive price i.e, $1.31/sqm.

    India is at #1 with a 43.2% share and China at #2 with a 34.4% share.

    TOP DENIM EXPORTERS TO COLOMBIA

    So far as the denim exporters are concerned MPVR Trading (Mexico) and Zhejiang XInlan (China)  are the biggest exporters of denim fabric to Colombia with a total import of 398 thousand sqm and 308 thousand sqm of denim fabric respectively. MPVR Trading supplied at the most expensive average price i.e., $2.14/sqm.

    In 2015, men’s jeans and women’s jeans saw similar growth rates with 6% volume rises. The increasing number of workplaces that allow casualwear and jeans in different colours, for both men and women, contributed to their positive performances. The versatility of jeans means that they can be combined with more-formal jackets and blazers and different footwear styles to create more-formal looks for weekdays. Washed or ripped jeans are reserved for weekends, as although offices allow the use of jeans, their dress codes impose certain limits. While women are more concerned about the fit than the brand name, they try different brands in the quest for the perfect fit. Price is a secondary decision-making factor.

    Colombia’s apparel market is one of the fastest growing   in Latin America. The consumers are fashionable and love denim and hence there has been a growing demand . With a number of local brands and a fashionable population, it is expected by industry that jeans sales  will register a value CAGR of 5% –6% in the next few years at constant 2015 prices.     To begin with, we will start looking at the Table 1 which gives the names of top importers of denim fabrics in Colombia.

    From the above table we can see that almost all the top 10 importers imported over a million sq mtrs of denim fabrics during 12 months. Floral S.A was the largest importer of denim fabrics with over 2.8 million sq mtrs imported from around the world. Its average price of $2.13/sq. mtr was also a decent price compared to many other importers. We have also given the prices of imports in linear mtr with an average width of 150 cm as an assumption to give a rough idea of how the linear mtr price would look like .
    Other important importers by quantity were Comertex S.A , Colombiana De Comercio S.A etc. However, the importer who really seems to be importing high quality fabrics is Permoda LTDA. With an average price of $4.46/sq mtr ($6.69/ mtr), the price is the highest among all importers and stands out as a premium buyer. Some of the importers like Productora De Textiles are low value importers importing fabrics at $1.26/sq mtr from countries like Panama.

    From the above table we can see that India , at $1.49/sq mtr, has among the lowest prices when it comes to shipping to Colombia. Canada is still lower, but Canada does not produce any denim- they are only trading. Turkey is highest priced exporter at $4.15/sq mtr. Panama – again a trading company- stands the top exporting country at over 4.5 million sq mtr. India , China and Mexico come next. Germany, again a non-manufacturer- manages to trade half a million .

    Now we come to the Top 10 Exporting countries to Colombia. Its interesting to see that the top exporting company is from China – Zhejiang Tengma and shipped over 2 million sq mtr. Kaltex, from Mexico, stands second at over 1.6 million while Vicunha from Brazil is almost similar at about 1.6 million sq mtrs. Other high quantity importers which exported well were :

    Kassim – Pakistan, Nandan Denim and Poonam Enterprises – China.

    Its interesting to note that 3 companies from Panama are in top 10 and all these 3 companies are traders and not manufacturers. Two companies are from India whereas two companies are from China . Only Vicunha from Brazil and Kaltex from Mexico are the companies from the Americas which could export in decent quantities to Colombia. Interesting to note that the highest prices are coming from Panama company Grigle Textiles.

    Top Exporting countries

    From the table below, we can see that China is the largest supplier of denim fabrics to Colombia during the period July-August’14. The second largest exporter has been India and the third is Pakistan. The average prices are lowest from India at about $2.2/linear mtr and the highest are from Italy and even Turkish prices are very good. With the top 9 countries exporting about 6 million mtrs, the quantities are not not too small.

    From the table above, we can see that some of the buyers buy substantial quantities of denim fabrics . FLORAL S. A buys over 700,000sq mtrs in two months while Primatela is close with similar quantities and a better average price. In the last column are mentioned the countries from which they buy.  Other important buyers are Comertex , Colecciones Exclusivas etc. Also mentioned are average prices at which they bought these fabrics.The prices are given both in sq mtrs and in linear mtrs (taking an average width of 150 cm).  There is a vast difference in the kind of prices some of the buyers pay.  While Permoda pays more than $6 per linear mtr, some like Surtijeans pay about $2.

    India , Mexico , China, Pakistan and Turkey have been the main suppliers of denim fabrics to Colombia during these two months with similar levels of quantities. However, there is a vast difference in average prices. While India is a poor $1.50 , Turkey is at $4.34 and even Mexico and Pakistan are much better at $2.50 and $2.29 respectively.  Turkey is really maintaining its high levels of prices and quantities and in essence seems to be the most recognized quality exporter to Colombia.
