Turkey Exports Of Jeans To EU 2017 – 2019

In our previous report, we talked about the turkey’s declining exports of denim fabrics to EU, in this report we’ve analyzed the Jeans exports of Turkey to the EU for H1 period of years 2017 to 2019 to understand whether Turkey is doing well in terms of their jeans exports to EU or not. We went into details of first 6 months of last three years to analyse the same.

Jeans Export To EU

Jeans export from Turkey to the EU has been decreasing for the past two years. During Jan-June ’18, the export witnessed a plunge of 9% and dropped at 38.32 million pcs. During Jan-June’19, it further dipped by 3% and fell to 37.25 million pcs.

Average Price on the other hand also decreased over the years due to increased competition from other regions. During Jan-June’17, the average price of a jeans exported from Turkey to EU was Euro 13.20/pc which reached to the level of Euro 12.01/pc during Jan-June19, a fall of 9%

Jeans Export – Men Vs Women

Turkey is understandably more into Women Denim as it caters to fast fashion and its share is 60% of the total export of Jeans. The average price of Women denim is more competitive than Men’s denim. The average price of Women denim revolved around Euro 11-12/pc however the price of Men’s denim remained constant around Euro13/pc.

Since the total export of jeans fell, so the export of Men’s and Women Jeans. The highest fall of 10% reported during Jan-June’2018 in the export of Men’s Denim, during the same period, Women’s denim export also dipped by 8%.

The above charts and graphs give us a good idea of how the Turkish denim industry is performing when it comes to exports of Jeans to EU countries. Though Turkey is still a formidable force in this market , it is losing share every year with competition specially from Pakistan, Bangaldesh , Egypt, Tunisia , Morocco and other locations.

Bangladesh Vs Pakistan – Denim Exports To EU From 2016 To 2018

In this report, we’ve analyzed the trend of Denim Jeans from Bangladesh and Pakistan to the EU for the years 2016 to 2018 to understand how these both important countries are performing when it comes to their most important market ie the EU.

Pakistan and Bangladesh both enjoy GSP benefit to EU and this has helped them to take a major share of market away from China which was the previous holder of major share in this market. We try to understand how these countries have developed their exports to the EU during these 3 years

Jeans Exported To EU By Bangladesh (BD) And Pakistan (PK) During 2016-18

By the end of the year 2018, the total denim exports by Bangladesh to the EU stood at 238.66 million pcs, which is 14% more than the export of 2016 and 11% more than 2017. Pakistan, on the other hand, exported 105.6 million pcs of denim to the EU by the end of 2019 which is only 2% higher than the export of 2016. The year 2018 also witnessed a marginal decline of 3.94 lacs pcs in the export from 2017.

Average Price (Euro/Pc) Of Jeans Exported

Bangladesh is one of the cost-competitive countries and due to various factors like lower costs, efficiencies and large capacities, the country has been exporting denim at very competitive prices. Bangladesh exported its Jeans at an average price of Euro 5.71/pc in 2018 whereas Pakistan exported at Euro 7.03/Pc. Though the prices cannot strictly be compared unless there is a comparison of types of products exported, their complexities, volumes, qualities, types of buyers etc but on broader terms, Bangladesh’s prices were lower than that of Pakistan.

Another interesting fact to note is that both countries have become more competitive in terms of price over a period of three years and we can see the changes in the below table and graphs.Increased competition among themselves and with countries like Vietnam and Ethiopia with a better geographical dividend and huge FDIs in past years made the trade little more intense. It is a reflection of a sad fact of our industry that with each passing year we are actually reducing the prices whereas the costs of production are going up ! .This also reflects that our industry is oversaturated with supply far exceeding the demand.

Jeans â€“ Women & Men, Exported To EU By Bangladesh (BD) And Pakistan (PK) During 2016-18

Interesting to note that Pakistan is more focused on Men’s jeans with its Men jeans volume being almost double than that of women. However, in the period of 2016-28, the %age of women jeans is slowly increasing but its exports are still majorly dominated by Men’s Jeans.

Bangladesh also exports more Men’s jeans but their gap between the two is not so much. The exports of Men’s jeans was about 50% more than that of Women’s in 2016 whereas in 2018 it is about 30% more. So Bangladesh has probably better adapted to women jeans production over the years taking a major share away from China which was the major exporter of Women jeans.

Average Price (Euro/Pc) Of Jeans ( Men & Women) Exported

The average price of Women Denim is lower side as compared to the average price of Men’s Denim for both the countries. In 2018, Bangladesh exported Men’s denim at an average price of Euro 5.88/Pc and Women’s denim at an average price of Euro 5.51/Pc, Pakistan exported the same at Euro 7.22/Pc and Euro 6.66/Pc respectively. But the drop in prices of women denim is more sharp for both the countries over a 3 year period. Bangladesh reduced its Men’s denim prices by about 6% from 2016 to 2018 whereas Pakistan reduced the prices of the same by about 5%. In Women’s denim , the reduction by BD is about 8.5% whereas that of PK is about 9% .

The total volume of both countries stands at about 330 million pieces of jeans to EU. This is more than 50% of total exports to EU which stands at about 600 million pcs. The share of these countries is expected to grow over the next few years and China would be one of the biggest loser of its share in this market.

1. Imports Of Denim Apparels From TURKEY From 2014 to 2017

An upward trend of Import of Denim Apparels from Turkey to EU during 2014-17 could be observed ,however the growth rate remained inconsistent . The countryâ€™s export growth trebled in 2017 and reached a low figure ofÂ 3.95% from 13.79% . In 2014 , the country exported 64.3 million of denim pcs to EU which reached to 71.19 million pcs by the end of 2015 and the growth rate was 10.72% and in the following years of 2016 & 2017 , the growth rates wereÂ 13.79% and 3.95% respectively. Unlike growth pattern , the average price remained constant from 2015 onwards and saw a minor changes over the period of three years .

2. Imports Of Denim Apparels : Men & WomenÂ From TURKEY From 2014 to 2017

Segregating the imports of total denim apparels into Men & Women , we drew the conclusion that over the tenure of 4 years , Turkey exported more Menâ€™s denim in 2014 as compared to Womenâ€™s denim and the variance was close to 3 million pcs however post 2014 , there were substantial increase in the exports of Womenâ€™s Denim Pcs noticed. In the year 2015 , 2016 and 2017 , the export of womenâ€™s denim apparels were 36.47 , 44.46 and 47.68 million pcs respectively against the export of menâ€™s denim apparels which were 34.72, 36.54 and 36.53 million pcs resectively for the same corresponding years. The average price of womenâ€™s denim apprels remained lesser than menâ€™s denim apparels during this period . Thus we can see more growth in women’s denim rather than men’s.

3.Â Imports Of Denim Apparels From PAKISTAN From 2014 to 2017

There is a upward trend of Import of Denim Apparels from Pakistan to EU during 2014-17 however the growth rate is again not so inspiring in the last 2 years. The country failed to hold the pace ofÂ growth and started declining from 2015 onwards. In 2014 , the country exported 86.2 million of denim pcs to EU which reached to 96.44 million pcs by the end of 2015 and the growth rate was 11.88% however in the following years of 2016 & 2017 , the growth rates were only 6.26% and 3.47% respectively. Unlike growth pattern , the average price remained close to constant from 2015 onwards and witnessed a minor changes over the period of three years .

4. Imports Of Denim Apparels : Men & Women From PAKISTAN From 2014 to 2017

Segregating the imports of total denim apparels into Men & Women , we drew the conclusion that over the tenure of 4 years , Pakistan exported more Men’s Denim than Women Denim Apparel and it was close to twice the volume of Women Denim Export. So far as the average price is concerned , both the segment has almost same price and there is no any substantial variances found in the pricing over the period of four years from 2014 to 2017.

5.Â Export’s Growth Trend To EU From Turkey & Pakistan | 2015-17Â

The growth rate for the year 2015 for both the countries were very close , Turkey registered the growth of 10.72% however Pakistan reached the growth level of 11.88% . After a year , Turkeyâ€™s growth was at cloud nine with 13.79% but Pakistan dipped down to 6.26% in 2016 . Pakistanâ€™s growth rate went downÂ by 50% from what it had in the year 2015 . The year 2017 was the year of dissapointment for both the countries as both failed to keep the pace of the growth upwards and closed the year with the growth rate of 3.95% ( Turkey ) and 3.47 % ( Pakistan) . If we compare , Turkeyâ€™s performance was more disappointing than Pakistan as it reported the decline of 70% in its growth if we compare from 2016 . However, we can compare all the three years together, we find that the absolute growth has been around 30% for both the countries making a rough average growth rate of export of about 10%. But Turkey is ahead of Pakistan when it comes to total volumes as it stands at over 80 million pieces compared to about 70 million pcs of Pakistan.

Both countries are fighting for the pie of denim market of EU . However Turkey has clearly a much higher value priced exports with average going over 12 Euros against Pakistan’s close to Euro 7Â giving them different market segments. But Pakistan is upgrading fast and will give serious competition to Turkey soon.
