In its second avatar, the FASHIONIM further evolved and was sponsored by three companies – Vicunha , Enovy and Bhaskar. We bring in this article, the denim wear collection displayed by Vicunha .

    Vicunha showed a visual feast of creative and innovative men’s and ladies denim wear. Here is what the Vicunha creative team had to say about their collection.

     

    “To reflect the Playground theme the collection encompassed the spirit of the Athleisure trend by showing products with both attitude and comfort. Garments provided maximum impact as they showcased washes from Martelli and Comask in key shapes blurring the lines between active and casualwear.At the pinnacle of the collection were fabrics from the’ Athletic range’, a range of fabrics which perfectly addresses the crossover between sportswear and leisure. The fabrics remain denim on the outside but feel like a jog pant on the inside. This gives the wearer total freedom of movement whilst providing all the character and wash effects achievable on denim. New technological advancements featured strongly, these were showcased in many of the ‘perfect fit’ ladies jeans, offering high performance and advanced technology with an ‘ultra soft’ touch.Both Essential and premium denims featured across both men’s and ladies wear showing the flexibility of many of the articles and the trend of comfort and ease of movement into menswear.Authentic articles washed in new and innovative ways, recycled and reinvented tradition and heritage into something new, desirable and tangible. Loved, worn and mended styles epitomized this look and encompassed the ethos of this trend. All of the articles shown were made from BCI cotton, and with a stockholding service to support the Asian market, Vicunha stand strong to service this part of the world.     Chloé Spring/Summer 2016 Paris Fashion Week

    French design house Chloe brought sporty chic to the catwalk on Thursday, presenting  floor-sweeping skirts for women’s wardrobes next spring.Creative director Clare Waight Keller sent models out in indigo, burgundy and beige sporty tops and trousers, slit below the ankle, as she presented Spring/Summer 2016 collection at Paris Fashion Week.

    Keller had interesting takes on denim: usually shorts and skirts tied with drawstring and frayed at the edges. For her SS’16 collection, she took inspiration from 1990s looks. .SS16, however, was still a very western, grunge-era look, and one that brought out Chloé’s glory years under Stella McCartney.

    Twin designers Dean and Dan Caten are bringing a playful collection that ran on the crest of camp . The theme for Dsquared was baggy denims , surfer mixed with leather shorts and leggings and some oversized anorak jackets. Denim Jackets were mainly bleached out paired with bold baller mesh tops bonded to sleeveless white tees. .

    The Milan Fashion week ramp walk played to the theme of play with nomadic attitude bringing to fore the life of a charismatic man, who’s never afraid to explore a new and bold idea of style. The , pseudo , tattoos on the hands added some more zing to the attitude together with some zany flame bleached out jeans and jackets. . On the whole a very playful collection – though a bit weird !

    Alexander McQueen Womenswear Spring Summer’16 Runway Looks

    A profound respect for the artisanal makes craftsmanship the heart of the house of Alexander McQueen and the collection for Spring/Summer 2016 looks to the people of Spitalfields from the late 17th century, the Huguenot migrants who arrived in London as religious refugees. They brought with them their knowledge, skill in weaving and a love of naturalistic floral designs inspired by “The Line of Beauty” philosophy.

    There’s a bohemian elegance to the McQueen woman this season as Sarah Burton draws on the roots and myths of English folklore to bring together the mood of the collection. Burton has also been exploring consistently the idea of heirlooms and found objects. Garments too carry history and hence feel precious and the collection has been finished and treated with a tactile hand, so that materials and surfaces feel aged and familiar.

    The people of London’s Spitalfields from the late 17th Century and the Huguenot migrants who arrived as religious refugees were the starting point for Burton, they brought with them a skill in weaving and floral design. Those artisanal crafts were mined to the hilt; along with a love of folklore and the idea of heirloom. Fabrics looked aged and decayed, from gentle frays in the surface of washed silk gowns to jeans with exaggerated cuffs that were shredded to the extreme.

    It was bohemian in parts, exotic in others – those Indian-mirrored ivory frock coats being the best example. Denim jeans, mainly selvedge,  were highly destructed and then paired with floral designed Indian coats to make up for the destruction!.

    They call me the king of basics,” Jean Touitou said with a laugh at the APC presentation .And he is rightly called so because of the simple cuts and looks that most of his pieces have.

    Overalls were the main focus of his denim collection as he played around with different looks and even pairing similar fabrics for tops and bottoms. The smocks, the well cut trench etc rounded out the collection. A bit of stripe denims here and there and some odd 80s pairing of shirts and shorts in similar fabric color completed the denim looks. The brand does not experiment much and remains more basic – as Jean Touitou says !

Starting as workwear , the fabric is now facing the ‘Athleisure Threat’ as many would say. But it is only in challenge that denim has thrived. Challenge continuously raises the bar for this versatile fabric and pushes the ‘Denim Players’ to jump notches above it as athletes do in a playground. The more they stretch themselves, more the denim evolves !

    The fourth edition of Denimsandjeans.com Bangladesh , scheduled to be held on 7th and 8th October (2015) at Radisson Dhaka, derives its inspiration from these ‘Denim Players’ and has aptly selected ‘Denim Playground’ as its theme. . The theme of the show shall be ‘Denim Playground Dhaka’ where coolest exhibitors from around the world shall bring out their sporty innovations to the visitors who travel long distances to visit the show. It shall be a ‘PLAYGROUND FOR DENIM LOVERS’.

    Denimsandjeans Bangladesh always adds some seminars and panel discussions by reputed industry veterans from around the world so that the visitors can get more value from the show.     Acticell (Ltd.) was founded as a spin-off of the University of Innsbruck in Austria. The company focuses on cellulose chemistry research and develops eco-friendly solutions for the denim industry .This talk will give an overview about new concepts for the denim industry — mainly in localized bleaching of jeans and creation of new dyeing effects besides a new concept in eco friendly bleaching of jeans.

    The recent economic recession noticeably affected the entire Jeans market. Almost all brands and product group sales in volume and value terms dropped . In this report, we would have a detailed  trend analysis of Denim Jeans of ITALIAN market and would also include some of the pertinent aspects of  that market including its trade quantities within EU and outside with the entire world.  We had done the analysis for the UK and the German market in the last report and this time we are doing for the ITALIAN market. ITALY is again an important country in the EU with a population of over 61.07 million and a per capita income of about $30,262. Let’s have a look at some vital figures from the ITALIAN market to get a broader framework of understanding about the denim market which includes the followings:

    IMPORT FROM EU28 COUNTRIES

    Let’s start our analysis with the imports of jeans into ITALY from within EU.  In the diagrammatical explanation below, we can observe that ITALY imported about 10.11 million pcs of jeans from countries within EU IN 2014 – highest among them being from Belgium. Other important countries are France, Romania, Netherland, and Czech Republic etc. However, it needs to remember that these jeans could have been the ones that are re-distributed after importing from other countries or a part of them having been produced in EU. It’s interesting to note that the total jeans imported from within EU have shown only marginal growth and that from 9.24 million pcs to over 10.11 million pcs.

    From the above analysis, it can be easily drawn that Belgium  holds 27.12% share followed by Romania with 19.79% share in the import. One more thing that is very eye catching that the import quantities of Belgium has maintained a constant growth right from the year 2010 to 2014 while the import quantities of France has been reduced from 1.965 million pcs to 1.727 million pcs . However, it cannot be said that the mentioned numbers reflect products made in Belgium. A major part is probably re-exported.

    The table below shows the average price of jeans imported into Italian Market from EU countries. The average price of import in 2014 for individual countries is given along with. The table and the graph below show the details of prices from important EU countries. Greece is the most expensive while Belgium and Hungary are  the cheapest one.

    A vast difference in prices of jeans coming from different countries. Specially jeans from Hungary seem very cheap while those from Greece and UK are very expensive at about Euro 22/- .

    IMPORTS FROM WORLD

    One cannot imagine the latest trend in the Apparel industry without considering the figures of Imports of Jeans around the globe; we cannot do the precise interpretation unless the information about world isn’t analyzed. Let’s analyze the jeans coming to Italy from the world. Bangladesh holds the largest share of 27.93% of Italy market in 2014 whereas Tunisia and Pakistan come next with 20.37% and 12.20% share. The total quantity imported in 2014 was about 31.711 million pcs whereas in 2010 it was about 30.348 million pieces showing a decent growth of about 5%.

    TOTAL IMPORTS

    The total imports of jeans into ITALIAN Market can be now summarized up in the table below with shipments coming from both within EU and from outside. The share of EU in the French market is about 24.18% whereas 75.82% comes from rest of the world in 2014. If we look at the quantities imported from 2010 to 2014 from EU countries, it’s very apparent that there is only a marginal growth in the quantities however, if we look at the figures of World, it’s quite surprising that in the year 2011, 2012 and 2013, there was an adverse growth in the import quantities , the reason may be the impact of recession which affected the consumptions worldwide but it’s good to know that in the year 2014 , the import quantity has registered marginal growth.

    So we see that  a total of about 41 million pcs of denim jeans were imported into Italy in 2014 which is a good number . About 75% of the same is coming from rest of the world and about 25% from within EU. However, it can be safely said that a large part of the  jeans coming from within EU is also coming from outside EU – first within other countries and getting sent to Italy. Italy also has a large production of jeans in their country. Though not growing it is a decent number and we will cover that in another report.

    Faustine Steinmetz

    Faustine Steinmetz , the French designer , employs meticulous artisan skills to hand woven collection of highly distressed (and knotted) denim pieces. Each fabric by Faustine is solely handwoven by one person using one of  traditional handlooms.Each piece in her collection is meticulously made by hand, with some pieces taking over a week to weave.. She partnered with a denim mill in Spain for Spring 2016.

    Micro-pleated denim is her take on the combo of formal and not so formal looks !. Denim jackets have been particularly chiseled , as it may, on a piece of statue with long flowing robes made out of denim yarns. In this age of volumes and numbers , it is very difficult to find a designer dedicated to traditional methods of production to bring out a modern wardrobe.

    MM6 Maison Margiela SS’16

    Disruptive warehouse parties in the industrial techno dens of London is the backdrop for the MM6 Maison Margiela SS’16 collection. The models were more of club kids ready for long night  party. He had fun mixing the fabrics to create impactful yet simple pieces.

    Ashish Gupta , the designer from India, first showed at LFW in 2005 and went on to win the New Generation award three times. Having studied from Central St. Martin, he lost his entire portfolio of work and cash at Gare Du Nord in 2000 and had big career setback and started making clothes for friends but  was noticed by Yeda Yun – one of London’s best fashion names and the rest , as they say , is history. He showed at London Fashion Week 10th time this year.

    Female models had a tough time strutting down on the ramp on skateboards as required by him  and  his denims pieces were cutouts or had patchworks/ embellishments . The concept of draped denim seems to be one of the highlights of many designers – opening way for further usage of lighter denims .

    France gets imported jeans not only from around the world but also from within the EU. Let’s begin by starting to have an analysis of the figures for imports of jeans into French Republic from within EU.  In the table below, we can observe that French Republic imported about 25 million pcs of jeans from countries within EU – highest among them being from Belgium. Other important countries are Spain, Italy, Netherland and Ireland etc. However, it needs to be remembered that these jeans could have been the ones that are re-distributed after importing from other countries or a part of them having been produced in EU. It’s interesting to note that the total jeans imported from within EU have increased from 23 million pcs to over 25 million pcs.

    From the above analysis, it can be easily derived that Belgium holds 40% share followed by Spain with 23% share in the import. One more thing that is very eye catching that the import quantities of Belgium has reduced from 12.6 million pcs to 10.3 million pcs within one year of gap while quantities imported from Spain have been showing increasing trend so far.The table below shows the average price of jeans imported into French Market from EU countries.     Without looking at the picture of imports of Jeans from around the world, we cannot have the true picture of what is happening in the French market. Bangladesh holds the largest share of 32.35% of French market in 2014 whereas China and Pakistan come next with 31.14% and 15.67% share. The total quantity imported in 2014 was about 54.64 million pcs whereas in 2010 it was about 53.40 million pieces showing a negative growth in 5 years. Not a good portent for the industry !

    The total consumption of jeans in French Market can be calculated with the table below. The first two columns show the exports of jeans to rest of the world and to EU countries. From the below figures , it can be easily obtained that except the year 2012 and 2013 , rest years have shown the increasing trend in export as well as import . The net consumption in 2010 was 43.52 million pcs while it has been decreased to 38.86 million pcs in 2013 but later on in 2014 the net consumption has reached to the level of 46.42 million pcs . This is a little less than 7% increase over 5 years. Can be hardly commendable, but is still ok when we consider how the economies are moving.

Also the per capita consumption is much lower than many other nations like UK , Germany , Benelux etc. Not the greatest market, but still has a decent consumption of about 45 million pcs.
