Exports Of Denim Apparel From Ethiopia During April-June&19

Ethiopian Textile & Apparel industry has been on a growth path and has become on the favorite spots for the FDIs for the last few years. The country has a target to generate 30 billion U.S. dollars in export from the textile and apparel sector by 2030, according to Bogale Feleke, Ethiopian Deputy Minister of Industry.

Countries like China and India are investing hugely in Ethiopia leading to its fast growth. China has been facing the heat of high labor costs and also due to tariff wars with the USA, the country is diversifying itself with investments in other countries.

According to data from the Ethiopian Investment Commission, 124 foreign investors have expressed an interest in the Ethiopian textile sector, 71 of which are from China. Indian clothing and textile industry is also a significant future player, with more than 30 investor inquiries.

In this report, we have done a detailed analysis of leading denim exporters from Ethiopia and also the buyers who are importing these jeans from Ethiopia.

1. Top Export Destinations

The United States with 82% share in the total denim exports by Ethiopia ranks #1 during April-June’19. Out of total exports of 2.04 million pcs, the United States imported 1.66 million pcs. Canada is at #2 with 11% share and it has imported 2.31 lacs pcs of denim. Other countries including Thailand, UAE, and Malaysia had also imported the denim from Ethiopia however the volume is not that high.

2. Top Denim Exporters

There have been 3 major denim exporters which contributed more than 70% in the total denim exports during April-June’19 and they are Ashton Apparel(33%), Indochine Apparel (23%) and Arvind Lifestyle Apparel (15%). Ashton Apparel exported 6.80 lacs denim pcs and Indochine Apparel exported 4.71 lacs pcs of denim. Other exporters include Arvind Lifestyle, Velocity Apparel, Epic Apparel, and Everest Apparel.

3. Top Denim Buyers

There are primarily two buyers only who bought collectively over 92% denim exported by Ethiopia during April-June’19. The Children’s Place is the biggest one which imported over 1.58 million pcs (77% ) out of the total export of 2.04 million pcs by Ethiopia. The next big buyer is VF Jeanswear which bought 3.06 lacs denim pcs(15%) .

Comparative Analysis Of Denim Imports During Jan-Marchâ€™18 and Jan-Marchâ€™19

The 1st quarter of the year 2018 ended on March, reported a total import of 14.57 million sq meters of denim fabrics out of which 97% fabrics were imported from following 7 countries which include Turkey, Pakistan, and Morocco. Turkey and Pakistan are the two major exporting countries to the EU which accounted for over 50%in the total imports made during the aforesaid period.

Turkey’s share in the total import was 41.54% with a quantity of 6.05 million sq meter at an average price of Euro 2.99 per sq mtr . Pakistan’s share was 20.24% and the quantity exported was 2.94 million sq meter at an average price of Euro 1.54.

Surprisingly, the EU imported the fabric from Pakistan & India at the least average price of Euro 1.54/sq meter. Japan turned out to be the most expensive exporters which supplied fabric at an average price of Euro 8.12/sq meter. Inspite of high price, Japan exported a good quantity of over 300,000 sq mtrs to EU during this period.

JAN-MARCH 2019

The 1st quarter of the year 2019 ended on March, reported a total import of 13.17 million sq meters of denim fabrics which is approx 10% lesser than last year’s 1st quarter ended on March’18.

Out of 13.17 million sqm, 75% of fabrics were imported from Turkey, Pakistan, and Morocco which account for 34.63%, 30.07% and 10.26% share in the total imports made during the 1st quarter.

The EU imported the fabric from India at the least average price of Euro 1.48/sq meter and at an average price of Euro 8.10/sqm, Japan is the most expensive exporter

The 1st quarter witnessed a fall of 10% in the total imports of fabrics which led to the further fall in the share of several countries in the exports over the period of one year, India is the biggest loser which lost 40% of its exports to the EU followed by Morocco and Turkey.

Pakistan and Egypt gained by 34% and 33% respectively, however, China maintained the growth of only 7% even after too many odds.

Average Price of Turkey saw an increase of 4.33 %, Egypt had an increase of 5.40 % however Pakistan and India witnessed a fall in their average prices by 2.08% and 3.61% respectively.

Looking at the above report , we can come to the conclusion that the imports of denim fabrics into EU is on a declining trend. Pakistan is the only country (and to a lesser extent – China) , which has increased its share of exports of denim fabrics to EU. All other major exporters have lost their shares. This trend might continue during the full year 2019 as well.

Denim Exporting Countries

Major imports of denim fabrics in Ecuador in the month of July came from China,Peru, and Venezuela. Out of total imports, 25% came from China, 24% from Peru and 19% from Venezuela and the rest came from other countries including Colombia, Brazil, India, and the USA. China exported approx 1.41 lacs sqm of denim fabrics and Peru exported approx 1.40 lacs sqm of denim fabrics at an average price of $.97/sqm and $2.22/sqm respectively. Peru exported the fabrics at the most expensive average prices of $2.22/sqm and the USA at the least expensive at $.57/sqm.

Leading Importing Companies

Impordenim Importadora and Colortex Ecuador are two major importing companies which had imported over 60% (collectively) of total denim fabrics imported during the month of June this year. Impordenim Importadora imported approx. 2.47 lacs sqm (43%) at an average price of $1.73/sqm and Colortex Ecuador imported approx lacs sqm (17%) at an average price of $1.27/sqm. Comercializadora De Ropa Fashion Club imported the denim fabric at the most expensive average price of $8.32/sqm and Contreas Minchala Andres Luis imported at the least average price of $0.23/sqm.

TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO MEXICO

In the month of May 2019, Mexico has imported approx. 4 million sqm of denim fabrics.

CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 3 million sqm at an average price of USD 0.46/sqm. India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported around 3 lakhs sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 1.61/sqm. Brazil, United States ,Pakistan etc. are other major countries which contributed about 5%,4%,3% of the total import of denim fabric of Mexico respectively.Japan on the other hand exported at the highest average price of 5.98 USD/SQM.

(Note: this data has been captured from various govt organizations including customs. the actual imports are likely to be higher than this figure .)

The prices from countries like China look ridiculous at less than 50 cents. It is widely believed that these prices are not correct and are under invoiced so that the importers can avoid duties and hence these should not be seen as benchmark prices and the readers can draw their own conclusion .

Imports Of Denim Fabric In India During April- June’19

In this report, weâ€™ve analyzed the import of denim fabrics into India during Aprilâ€™19 â€“ June â€™19. From April to June, India has imported approx. XXXXXXX sqm of denim fabrics out of which two companies imported approx. 50% of total fabrics . About 62% came from China while about 22% came from Turkey. While India is itself a large producer of denim fabrics, still some fabric does get imported from various locations.

Monthly Imports Of Denim Fabrics

The total import of denim fabrics in India during Aprilâ€™19 â€“ Juneâ€™19 was approx. 1.02 million sqm out of which 3.48 lacs sqm was imported in the month of April at an average price of $ 2.34/sqm, 2.68 lacs sqm was imported in the month of May at an average price of $2.26/sqm and 4.04 lacs was imported in the month of June at an average price of $2.43/sqm. May was the month of slowdown and June was the peak importing month during this period of three months.

Leading Exporting Countries

Major imports of denim fabrics in India during April- July came from China and Turkey. Out of total imports, 62% came from China, 22% came from Turkey and the rest came from other countries including Hong Kong, Egypt, Bangladesh, Italy, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan. China exported approx. 6.30 lacs sqm of denim fabrics and Turkey exported approx. 2.26 lacs sqm of denim fabrics at an average price of $2.07/sqm and $2.77/sqm respectively. The sudden rise in the imports of Turkish Denim Fabric is surprising, if this pace remains the same throughout the year, import of over a million sqm of denim fabric from Turkey should not be a big deal. Italy exported the fabrics at the most expensive average prices of $4.91/sqm and China at the least expensive at $2.07/sqm.

Leading Importing Companies

Shahi Exports, Jeans Knit (FFI) and United Dry Goods are three major importing companies which had imported over 60% (collectively) of total denim fabrics imported during April- June this year. Shahi imported approx. 2.63 lacs sqm (26%) at an average price of $ 2.37/sqm, Jeans Knit imported approx. 2.47 lacs sqm (24%) at an average price of $2.87/sqm and United Dry Goods imported approx. 1.09 lacs sqm (11%) at an average price of $1.17/sqm. Ram Narayan Company imported the denim fabric at the most expensive average price of $3.89/sqm and United Dry Goods imported at the least average price of $1.17/sqm.

TOP 10 COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO SRILANKA

In the month of April 2019, SriLanka has imported approx. 1.1 million kgs of denim fabrics. Since the data is available not in SQM but in KGS we will have to make deductions on the basis of the same. Assuming that an average weight of 9oz fabric has been shipped, we can roughly calculate that about 3.1 million mtrs of fabrics with 150 cm width has been shipped to Sri Lanka during this month. If the average weight considered is less than 9 oz the quantity will be more and if it is say 10 oz , the quantity will be around 2.3 million mtrs.

CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to SriLanka with a total volume of about 4 lakh kgs at an average price of USD 5.8/kgs. Pakistan is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 2.9 lakh kgs of denim fabric at an average price of USD 5.3/kgs. India contributed 22.6% of the total import of denim fabric of SriLanka with total volume as 2.6 lakh kgs.Italy on the other hand maintained the highest average price for import at USD 15.6/kgs.

CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Colombia with a total volume of 7.69 million sqm at an average price of USD 1.69/sqm. India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 3.99 million sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 1.26/sq. Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico,Venezuela etc. are other major countries which contributed 6%,5%,5%,4% of the total import of denim fabric of Columbia respectively.
