COVID Hits Indian Denim Industry Hard, Export Falls By 31% In March 2020

Covid 19 has had a major impact on various industries globally and textile / apparel is one of the worst hit . Denim being a part of this industry is even more hit with most large retailers around the world shutting doors on their stores . India exports a lot of denim fabrics and in this report we analyse how the impact of Covid19 can be seen on the exports.
We are covering the denim export from India in March 2020 and later in the report, we compare it with the export of March 2019 to understand the impact of COVID 19 on Indian Denim Industry.

COUNTRY WISE DENIM EXPORTS MARCH 2020

There are 12 major countries where India exported approx 90% out of its total exports. The list primarily included Bangladesh, Egypt, Colombia, and Sri Lanka. Total export from India stood at 14.75 million meters at an average price of $2.15/meter.

In March’20, a major portion of denim was exported to Bangladesh which was approx. 45% and the total export figure stood at 6.63 million meters and it was exported at an average price at $2.36/m. The 2nd major country where exports were made was Colombia which had a 15% share in the total export in the same month.

The total export made to Egypt was 0.86 million meters at an average price of $1.79/m. Sri Lanka is at #4 and imported 0.49 million meters of denim fabric from India at an average price of $2.98/m which is the most expensive average price paid by any country in March’20.

Export Of Denim Fabric From India In March 2020

COMPANY WISE DENIM EXPORTS

So far as the leading denim suppliers are concerned, In the month March’20, the top three denim suppliers were as below:

Arvind Denim â€“ Total Denim Exported was 2.83 million meters at an average price of $2.63/m. Total share in export is 19%. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Venezuela are major exporting countries for Arvind.
Raymond UCO Denim â€“ Total Denim Exported was 1.61 million meters at an average price of $3.13/m. Total share in export is 11%. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Thailand are major exporting countries for Raymond.
Jindal Denim â€“ Total Denim Exported was 1.54 million meters at an average price of $1.91/m. Total share in export is 10%. Bangladesh, Chile, Lesotho and Colombia are major exporting countries for Jindal Denim.

Oswal Denim supplied the fabrics at the least average price of $1.68/m and Raymond UCO at the most expensive price of $3.13/m. The leading buyers of Indian Denim Fabric include Armana Group, Ananta Garments, Artistic Designs, Kenpark, Hiradarmani, Refat Garments, Denimach,Tusuka, Kenpark, FGS Denim, CRS Denim Garments, and FJ MAGALHAES LDA.

Leading Denim Fabric Exporters From India

Denim Export – March’20 V March’19

Compared to the export in March’19, the export in March’20 fell by 31.20% and the reason is pressure on demand globally due to the COVID19 pandemic. Since the stores are closed and all the fresh buying orders are on hold, and hence the raw material’s demand took a toll.

The biggest export destination of Indian denim fabric is Bangladesh where the export fell from 9.52 million meter to 6.63 million meter(-30%), also the average price discounted from $2.59/m to $2.36/m (9%).

So far as the exporters are concerned, Arvind’s export plunged by over 36% which brought down the volume from 4.44 million meters to 2.83 million meters. The average price also discounted more than 8% and fell unto the level of $2.63/m

Jeans Exported And The Exporting Destinations

Ethiopia is still a country which is developing slowly and the data generation is not still complete with all shipments not being captured. . However, from the available data we can see that during Janâ€™20, 831,000 pieces were exported out of which major portion to the tune of 67% exported to the USA. This number looks very small but we need to remember that Ethiopia will need some time to get its data in full order. We can only work on the figures currently available.

Spain was the second largest importer and imported 14% of the Jeans during the same period. Other countries that imported jeans from Ethiopia include Germany and Canada.

Leading Buyers

The Children Place emerged as the biggest jeans buyer and has imported 571 thousand Jeans at an average price of $1.36/unit through its subsidiaries based in the United States, Malaysia, and Canada.
(The price seems to be under reported in the data but we still are presenting it here. We go with the idea that though the data looks not too accurate , it can give a fair idea of what is happening)

Other major buyers include Decathlon Sports Ireland and H&M , theyâ€™ve imported 112 thousand and 60 thousand jeans respectively. H&M imported jeans at the highest average price of $4.12/unit from Ethiopia.

TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO SRI LANKA

In the month of November 2019, Sri Lanka imported approx. 3.3 million meter of denim fabrics. CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Sri Lanka with a total volume of about 1.95 million meters at an average price of USD 2.54/meter. India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 7.20 lacs meter of denim fabric at an average price of USD 2.97/meter. Pakistan contributed 12% of the total import of denim fabric of SriLanka with a total volume of 3.97 lacs meter.

So far as the import of denim fabric by different companies are concerned, ORIT TRADING LANKA PVT LTD and HIRDARAMANI INDUSTRIES PVT LTD are the biggest importers of denim fabric into Sri lanka with the total import of 1.1 million meters and 0.7 million meters of denim fabric respectively.

COUNTRYWISE DENIM EXPORTS

There are 10 major countries where India exported approx 84% out of its total exports. The top importers of Indian denim fabrics include Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, and Sri Lanka . In the month of February, 2020, a major portion of exports belonged to Bangladesh which was approx. 34% and the total export figure to this country stood over 6.37 million meters and it was exported at an average price at $2.57/m.

The 2nd major country where exports were made was Colombia which had a 19% share in the total export during February 2020. The total export made to Colombia was 3.5 million meters at an average price of $1.8/m.

Egypt is at #3 and had 12% share and Sri Lanka with 4% share stood at #4 in the list. Sri Lanka bought fabrics at the most expensive average price of $2.64/m however Egypt found to be the cheapest importer during this period with an average price of $1.6/m.

Over 18.7 million meters were exported from India globally, in the month of Janâ€™20 it was 17.7 million meters , a growth of 5.83% within a month is a good indication for Indian denim industry and in coming months the export it might increase due to the lockdown of China.

It would be pertinent to mention here that the actual figures of exports would be little higher as data is normally not captured .

So far as the leading denim suppliers are concerned, in Feb 2020, the top three denim suppliers were as below:

Arvind Ltd. â€“ Total Denim Exported was 3.23 million mtrs at an average price of $2.72/m. Total share in export is 17%. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Guatemala are major exporting countries for Arvind.
Jindal Worldwide Ltd. â€“ Total Denim Exported was 1.85 million mtrs at an average price of $1.94/m. Total share in export is 10%. Amongst many, Colombia and South Africa are major export destinations for Jindal Worldwide Ltd.
Sangam Denim â€“ Total Denim Exported was 1.72 million mtrs at the highest average price of $1.77/m. Total share in export is 9%. Colombia,Egypt, and Mexico are major exporting countries for Sangam amongst many countries.

JRD Denim supplied the fabrics at the least average price of $1.35/m and Raymond UCO Denim at the most expensive price of $3.08/m. The leading buyers of Indian Denim Fabric include Armana Group, Ananta Garments, Cassiopea Apparels Ltd., Denim Experts Ltd., Kenpark, Hiradarmani, Refat Garments, Denimach, Tusuka and Kenpark.

Out of the many countries supplying denim fabric to EGYPT, India has supplied the maximum number of denim fabric quantity to EGYPT measuring to 24,644Â rolls which contributes 47.3 % of the total rolls imported by EGYPT in 2019. The least is done by Thailand over 2019 contributing 1 % of the total import of denim fabric. The data is in form of rolls and we cannot exactly find the meterage of imports but we can make a resonable guess that over 52 million mtrs was imported as per this data (assuming one roll to be about 100mtrs).

Jeans export from USA to EU tumbles by 35% in 2019

In this report, weâ€™ve analysed the trend of exports from USA to EU from 2017 to 2019. USA produces high quality premium denim in places like LA and brands have been exporting jeans for their own and other stores for sale in Europe besides some brands in Europe sourcing jeans from US for their high end labels.Â From 2017 to 2019, there has been a lot of deviations witnessed in the export trends – 2018 seemed very good . However in 2019, the export fell by alarming 35%.

Export of Jeans (Pcs) From USA to EU From 2017 to 2019

United Kingdom is the biggest buyer of Jeans ( 48%) from the USA in 2018 and 2019 with 3.86 lacs pcs and 2.86 lacs pcs respectively. In 2019, the jeans import by UK witnessed a dip of 26% , however in 2018, an unprecedented surge of 105% was witnessed in the Jeans import. Italy emerged as the 2nd biggest buyer (31%) in EU of Jeans imported from the USA with 1.87 lacs pcs, Italy also imported lesser Jeans in 2019, the fall was 20% from 2018. Netherlandsâ€™s import tumbled from 2.05 lacs pcs to mere 57k pcs in 2019, it reported the dip of 67% in the import of Jeans from 2018.

Average Price ( Euro/Pc)

An average increase of 6-12% in the average price of Jeans Imported from the USA was observed in 2019, however Netherlandsâ€™s average price reached to a different tangent. The average price of Netherlands in 2018 was Euro 20.45/Pcs which rose by double fold by the end of 2019 and came at Euro 41.62/Pcs. UK imported the jeans at the cheapest average price i.e, Euro 24.81/pcsÂ . Over the period of three years, this is also notable that Netherlands reduced importing Jeans from USA and in 2019 it imported only 57k jeans from the USA instead of 172k in 2018.

Men and Women Jeans Export (Pcs) From USA to EU from 2017 to 2019

The European countries imported more of Women Jeans as compared to Men Jeans in all these three years. In 2019 , UK imported 2.27 lacs pcs of Women Jeans and 58k Men Jeans only , Similarly Italy also imported 1.49 lacs pcs of Women Jeans and 38k Men Jeans only. Germany and France have almost equal share between women and men jeans in 2019.

So far as the average price is concerned, UK imported the Men Jeans from USA at the cheapest average price of Euro 23.03/Pc and Italy imported at the most expensive average price of Euro 104/pcs. UK also imported the women jeans at the cheapest price of Euro 25.27/Pcs and France imported the same at the most expensive average price of Euro 74.04/pcs.

TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO GUATEMALA

In the year of 2019 till August, Guatemal has imported more than 8 million sqm of denim fabrics. CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Guatemala with a total volume of about 5.8 million sqm at an average price of USD 0.6/sqm.

Some of the prices look highly undervalued and underquoted as there is a trend of not giving the full price to avoid duties. So we cannot take these prices as representative of actual prices.

India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported around 1.7 million sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 0.3/sqm. USA, Mexico etc. are other countries which contributed the rest 5% of the total import of denim fabric of Guatemala respectively.Pakistan exported the fabrics at the highest average price of 3.3 USD/SQM and India at the cheapest average Price

Ethiopia Jeans Exports-November and December 2019

For years now, Ethiopia has been growing rapidly with a long term goal to position itself as the worldâ€™s next big destination for textile and fashion production. With an array of many duty free incentives and infrastructure developments – like the freshly built industrial parks for garment manufacturing – the country in over the past years has opened doors for international apparel brands like H&M, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger to establish factories for producing a low-cost garment.

The country has plans to achieve the target of apparel exports to a total of $30 billion a year in the coming years. However the minimum wage is still a matter of grave concern, it is the lowest comparing the other garment manufacturing hubs.

According to the reports, the average wage of garment workers is as low as $26, which is substantially lower than the other low paying countries including Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Ethiopia is still a country which is developing slowly and the data generation is not still complete with all shipments not being captured. . However, from the available data we can see that during Nov and Decâ€™19, Jeans valued $3.83 million was exported out of which major portion to the tune of 80% exported to the USA. EU Denim Fabric Export During 2017 – 2019

Even with a continuously declining production of denim fabrics, EU still has some great denim mills who are not only selling in Europe but are also exporting their specialized fabrics around the world. We wanted to analyze the markets where such fabrics are going and to understand if some markets have some special liking for these fabrics. So we analysed the exports of denim fabrics from EU for the last 3 years and also checked the major destinations where this fabrics is being shipped. Overall it givesÂ a good idea about how EU denim fabrics are being used in different countries and markets.Â Â

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To WORLD During 2017 â€“ 2019

The exports of denim fabric to the World by EU has been decreasing since lastÂ 3 years . This is only to be expected as there are very few mills left in EU as many have closed down. Against a volume of about 39 million sq mtrs in 2017, only about 33 million sq mtrs were exproted in 2019 . The price remained almost the same at about Euro 3.83 – 3.90/ sq mtr.Â

Exports to COLOMBIA During 2017 â€“ 2019

The denim fabric exports by EU to COLOMBIA has seen a rise of 9.6% from 2017 to 2018 but dropped significantly in 2019. The total fabric exported was 2.5 lakhs sqm at an average price of 4.10 Euro/sqm in the year 2019. The average price at which the denim was exported in 2018 was 3.52 euro/sqm. Thus there is wide change in both quantities and prices for exports to this market. Colombia has been growing as a market and with many global companies invading the market, the prices too slashed down and EU companies found it more difficult to compete.Â

Exports To JAPAN During 2017 â€“ 2019

EU exports of denim fabrics to JAPAN is very less as compared to other important countries. The total volume exported has been decreasing continously since 2017. With very high average price of 12.67 euro/sqm , EU exported 9.903 sqm of denim fabric to JAPAN in the year 2019. It has shown a huge drop of 49.1% from 2018.

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To MOROCCO During 2017 â€“ 2019

Morocco is one of the high volume export destinations for EU fabrics – most of it to be converted and sent back to EU. The export of denim fabric to MOROCCO have increased a bit in 2019 with 1% increase from previous year. The average prices reducedÂ from 3.72 euro/sqm to 3.49 euro/sqm in the last 3 years. The total volume exported by EU in the year 2019 is approximately 5.4 million sqm at an average price of 3.49 euro/sqm.

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To TUNISIA During 2017 â€“ 2019

Tunisia is the largest export destination for EU fabrics for conversion to garments for reexport and the figures say so. However, inspite of it being so, the volumes to Tunisia too have fallen in last 3 years. We can see a fall of about 20% in 2019 over 2017 figures with prices also taking a nosedive. Around 8 % fall in the export can be seen from previous years.

Exports toÂ TURKEY During 2017 â€“ 2019

Turkey is again an important destination where EU fabrics nominated by the European buyers are sent for conversion to garments. Also Turkey has its own local brands who buy EU fabrics for their high end collections. The exports by EU in TURKEY also declined from the past 3 years but the fall in the export was less in 2019 as compared to 2018. The export reduced to 22.3 % from 2017 to 2018 and the reduction was 9% in 2019 as compared to the previous year. The average price however saw a jump fromÂ 3.18 to 3.69 over the period of 3 years.The total volume exported in the year 2019 was approximately 4.9 million sqm.

Exports To USA During 2017 â€“ 2019

Another decent market for EU, US high end brands have been buying EU fabrics. Minor changes were seen in the export of denim fabric to USA. EU exported around 2 million sqm of fabric in 2017 and 2018 but with a reduction of 4.5 % , the export volume was reduced to 1.9 lakhs sqm in the year 2019. The average price at which EU exported was 5.24 euos/sqm last year.

Comparative Study Of Export By EU During 2017 â€“ 2019

From the table below, we can see a summary of important markets of European denim fabrics with their shares. Tunisia takes the major share followed by Morocco and Turkey.Â The total exported volumes show a downtrend and it is expected to continue as production quantities may not increase in EU in the near foreseeable future .

TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO MEXICO

In the month of November 2019, Mexico has imported more than 5.4 million sqm of denim fabrics. CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 4.96 million sqm at an average price of USD 1.25/sqm. United States is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported around 2.20 lakhs sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 2.13/sqm. India, Colombia etc. are other countries which contributed the rest 5% of the total import of denim fabric of Mexico respectively.Japan exported the fabrics at the highest average price of 5.76 USD/SQM and China at the cheapest average Price

COUNTRYWISE DENIM EXPORTS

There are 10 major countries where India exported approx 86% out of its total exports. The list primarily included Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Gautemala, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Republic of Korea . In the month of January, 2020, a major portion of exports belonged to Bangladesh which was approx. 33% and the total export figure to this country stood over 5 million mtrs and it was exported at an average price at $2.5/m.

The 2nd major country where exports were made was Colombia which had a 18.4% share in the total export during these two months. The total export made to colombia was 3 million mtrs at an average price of $1.8/m.Â Egypt is at #3 and had 11.3% share and Gautemala with 4.5% share stood at #4 in the list. Sri Lanka bought fabrics at the most expensive average price of $2.6/m however the Venezuela remained the cheapest importer during this period with an average price of $1.53/m.

In total over 17.7 million mtrs were exported from India globally . This is a reasonably good number keeping in mind that there are some exports which still escape attention due to wrong HS codes or descriptions used.Â

COMPANYWISE DENIM EXPORTS

So far as the leading denim suppliers are concerned, in January 2020, the top three denim suppliers were as below:

Arvind Ltd. â€“ Total Denim Exported was 3.26 million mtrs at an average price of $2.8/m. Total share in export is 18.4%. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Gautemala are major exporting countries for Arvind.
Jindal Worldwide Ltd. â€“ Total Denim Exported was 1.57 million mtrs at an average price of $1.9/m. Total share in export is 8.9%. Amongst many, Colombia and South Africa are major export destinations for Jindal Worldwide Ltd.
Raymond UCO Denim â€“ Total Denim Exported was 1.53 million mtrs at the highest average price of $3/m. Total share in export is 8.7%. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Portugal, and Vietnam are major exporting countries for Raymond amongst many countries.

Ultra Denim supplied the fabrics at the least average price of $1.64/m and Raymond UCO Denim at the most expensive price of $3/m. The leading buyers of Indian Denim Fabric include Armana Group, Ananta Garments, Cassiopea Apparels Ltd.,Deniexperts Ltd.,Kenpark, Hiradarmani, Refat Garments, Denimach,Tusuka and Kenpark.

On the whole, the export scene of Indian denim fabrics is improving since there is huge pressure in domestic market and companies are looking overseas seriously . Many companies who were mainly domestic sellers turned to exports aggresively. We will see this trend to continue with higher vigour in this year – the China corona factor is expected to provide further impetus as global buyers look for alternative sources for their fabrics.
