  • 70 Innovative Products From Recycled Denim

Denim as a Fabric for apparel manufacturing has penetrated most of apparel categories, whether we speak of women wear, children wear, men’s wear and furnishing fabrics etc. Its versatility enables it to be used in multiple end uses. Though we are aware of many uses of denim, we will look below at about 70 different looks created from recycled jeans, shirts etc. These are all the more interesting because of their strong Eco credentials having been created with the recycling/upcycling of denim.

The presentation here gives all the 70 looks together, while we have also given some of the cool ones in the images below :

    Recycled Denim Geometric dress

Designer Hyun Gun Jang tailors old jeans into gorgeous geometric dresses Who knew wide legs could be turned into something so couture?

     Recycled Denim carpet

Terry Dewal made this delightful rug out of shredded up old jeans. To give the carpet even more customized flava, he hit it with a few splashes of Clorox for a blotchy, stonewashed appearance.

     Recycled Denim handbag

Miranda Chance breathed new life into old denim jeans and leather coats by transforming them into this exquisite bag.

     Recycled Denim Charpai

This charpai, or Indian string cot is Siddharth Hirwani’s version of the commonly used piece of furniture. Instead of the traditional nylon, it uses recycled strips of denim. 3-inch strips are cut and stitched together to make a roll of flat strip, which is then used to weave the central portion of the charpai.

     Recycled Denim Bracelet

You might not think that denim, or any other cloth for that matter, would make the most ideal material to make a bracelet with.

     Recycled Denim Dog vest

This doggie vest is so cute that it’s almost unfair. Justina Blakeney crafted it from a pair of old jeans.

    Recycled Denim Bean Bag

Carla Morai from Portugal makes one bean bag out of 10 pairs of castoff jeans. What a durable, comfy spot to curl up and read a book

    Recycled Denim Beads

These beads were made from an upcycled pair of blue jeans.Whilst they are made of fabric, they have been rolled and glued in such a way as to give them strength and durability so are fit for any crafting need.

    Recycled Denim Necklace

  • Financial Results 2013 : Large denim retailers

How did some of the top retailers  selling denim perform in 2013 ?

We have, in this report tried to bring out the financial results from some of the large retailers worldwide who are selling a good number of jeans. Of course this list does not include all of those whom we wanted to include, neither it shows the figures pertaining to only denim segment of these companies. The figures give consolidated view of the six companies – H &M, Gap, Levi’s , Fast Retailing , VF, Fast Retailing (Uniqlo)  and Guess and gives an idea on their growth movements in 2013 .

In the table  and graphs below below, the consolidated figures from these brands are given. in terms of their sales in 2013 and 2012, their % growth in sales and income and also the number of stores in 2013. Though the retailers cannot be compared on the basis of these parameters alone as each has its own strategic focus, distribution strategy, market penetration priority  bunch of products , we  are still inclined to put them together for an analysis . Sales and income figures for H&M and Fast Retailing and converted to US$ from SEK and Yen figures.

As we can see from above, H&M tops the chart out of the above mentioned retailers.  GAP, VF and Fast Retailing follow .

    image

What is interesting to see that the highest growth is achieved by Fast retailing – over 23% – while even H&M has a growth figures of over 6% on its large base.  Guess came out to be the only company to have shown a negative growth figure. . A large part of growth for the retailers came from push and entry into non-conventional markets of Asia, Middle East and South America. Some retailers like H&M also experienced decent growth in US where they opened a large number of new stores.

    image

    image

We can also have a look at the number of direct stores operated by each company. Though this number is not directly indicative of strength of market penetration of a company as (eg in case of VF) large part of sales can also occur through other retailers and shops , it still shows how a company is growing.

    Some notes on each retailer/brand

Country wise Share of Women’s jeans exports in 2013

    image

From the above table we see that Canada enjoys about 37% share of all the women jeans exported from US. Mexico, Belgium, Italy and UK are distant second markets with about 6-9% share of the women’s jeans. There is wide fluctuation within some markets when we see the average prices for 2012 and 2013. Markets like Germany ,take very small quantity of women jeans, tend to fluctuate in the average prices highly within 2 years going from $25 in 2012 to about $49 in 2013. This is also indicative effect of smaller quantity orders going in to markets like these. However bigger markets like Canada give a more consistent price ($26.8 in 2012 and $23.5 in 2013). The market for women jeans from US is small and niche and mainly includes developed countries.

  • Super Torn Jeans

Distressing on the jeans has been in vogue for quite some time and continues to be used in various degrees across a spectrum of brands. But the degree of distressing is very important for most brands and their customers.  Distressing beyond a degree becomes tearing and even such  harsh work on the jeans can be mitigated with back patches . However, if a jeans is just super torn revealing a lot of flesh inside, how many females can be bold enough to carry such jeans ?? Hardly many.. But when celebrities come out in such jeans its gala time for paparazzi and provide fodder for denim designers.

Kim Kardashian  comes out in one of such super torn jeans . Does she carry them well ? For us, its not one of the best looks on distressed jeans that we have seen.

She also puts up milder versions of distressing , which seem much more fashionable than the super torn jeans above.

We also spoke to Danny Bartlett – Design Manager at one of the most well known denim brand and he had some interesting views to offer on what’s important and what is not for the Chinese denim market.

“Mid blues are king! with subtle spray & scraping, Hi/Lows at medium contrast. Light abrasions. traditional red casts,  light weight fabrics, tencel blends work very well. Soft touch, and sheen finished fabrics, mercerisation’s and flat finishes are good, and sell well. The bright blues trend, doesn’t work in china, maybe its still to early. Although its been peaking in Europe for several seasons, even high summer in china, the brights don’t work. Whites, and super lights, are hard sell, as conversely, rigid & raw. also difficult. although the market is slowly picking up on rinse blues, as long as the fabric handle is super soft.Selvedge, is slowly beginning to be understood, and is starting to move from stores. Its a slow education, but it is definitely starting to move. Coatings don’t work. Full stop. (no matter how light) . 3D and dirt, work well, but again only on the mid blues, too light or to dark and its good night Vienna!. Greys & blacks, have been, until now, very difficult, but again like the selvedge, you can see some definite movement & progression. The mid greys with subtle washing effects seem to be best, and overdyed blacks are still a no no.”

On the denim styles , he says –

“Within the last 6 months I’ve seen a huge turn around, from regular fits to skinny jeans and anti fit carrot legs. But I think its going to be a long time before the new , high waisted boot/flare is really understood. 5 pocket is king, although chino styling is breaking through. Traditional workwear/ carpenter/ military/ cargo pants are an absoloute NO! side pockets are seriously OUT! .The market is getting a little more sophisticated, so bells & whistles, cut seams and overt detailing are slowly (thankfully) becoming less important. Correct fabric weights for the seasons are essential, from February anything over 10oz is Dust.”
