The exports from China , Mexico grow inspite of a huge base. However, the maxium growth is from Bangladesh at 11.8% . This is quite surprising since Bangladesh had been facing political crises during whole of 2013 . It shows the inherent strength of the country which enables it to compete with other countries effectively. The major losers are Cambodia, India, Nicaragua and Guatemala etc.

China simply dominates the US market when it comes to women’s jeans and other denim apparel . The second supplier – Bangladesh – is far far behind but the growth rate of exports from Bangladesh is tremendous. Pakistan is another country which is strongly picking up the market share in women’s denim apparel. Indonesia , Egypt and Sri Lanka and Cambodia are other strong contenders.

  • Denim Studio In A Desert !

    clip_image002_thumb2

On a recent visit to Dubai, it was interesting to see that a jeans manufacturing unit has been recently set up. It felt quite strange to see a new garment unit coming up in the heart of Desert. This was the Desert Studio set up by the Denim Clothing Company of Pakistan. We decided to check out the company and know more about the company and to explore the rationale behind setting up such a unit and had a chat with the Director of Machiyara Group of Companies, Mr Munaf.

Hi Mr Munaf! Welcome to Denimsandjeans. Pls tell us something about Hantex & Denim Clothing Company (DCC)..

It is a fine example of limitless energy and efforts which put together to establish highly competent fully vertical denim manufacturing setup in a short span of time (Just 6-7 years). One of the great challenges was to penetrate a matured industry and we did it by communicating market norm and needs efficiently from the scratch. Intelligent Business Approach, top class R&D facility, latest technology, fashion philosophy, finest quality and highly competent people.
In half decade, we successfully achieved 1.5 million garments / month with well-known market clients.

Do you think DCC is different from other companies in this region?
Yes, definitely .We are the only denim company in this region to have own cotton fields n fully vertical with fair trade & organic cotton including a modern and sustainable fabric mill & garment sets up with state of the art fully equipped laundries.
We also have in house carton, poly bag and thread factories to support our garment division. We believe that no other company can offer this combination of services.

Creating a denim factory at Dubai is quite a unique thing when you consider that most of the factories that existed here have shifted due to high costs and environmental issues. What was the thought process behind this creation?

Well, I was expecting this question from you. Operating denim manufacturing facility in Dubai is completely different dynamics. Globalization, brought business norms entirely on a different page. Clients have been treated more as business partners. This state of the art facility is a smart model of customer centric approach.
Considering rapid innovations in fashion world, we feel that it’s a genuine need of our partners to get them involved more with us in developing their products then and there.
Dubai is the most preferred place as it has become an important centre of business world. At Desert Studio, we are conducting highly interactive sessions with our clients where they develop their product line, experience each stage of product with highly transparent system and shorten their lengthy processes of making collections. Desert Studio is an exclusive facility for very high end products and it enables its partners to free from other limitations such as (MOQ, material management from different sources, high fashion finishes, efficient team to understand fashion philosophy).

Do you think it would be easy to go green on the products you make here?

(we show some images of the ozone and laser treatments)

We found Dubai and green product is a perfect combination. We are very conscious in terms of water usage and less harmful chemicals. We are offering water less washes, conscious washes, sustainable products etc. Further, you will hear a lot more in this direction from us soon.

What are the facilities available in this factory? Is it a fully equipped one?

Desert Studio is fully equipped with all latest technologies and facilities to make top of the line products.

(Automated cutting, stitching, laundry and finishing).
Fully equipped design room / show room for creative heads to design their collections.

  • Mavi Spring Summer 2014 Mens Lookbook

Double denim attire was an anathema a few years back after having been popular in the late 90s.  Wearing denim on denim was considered a sacrilege in fashion circles till very recently. But now most denim brands seem to be focusing on pairing denim tops (jackets, shirts) with jeans to bring out that cool look for the fashionistas. The Mavi SS’14 lookbook is again pointing in this direction . Printed denim shirts, short jackets , light washed shirts have been paired with similar  washed jeans . The pairing is not necessarily in contrasting colors as normally seen with double denim attires. Light and bleached out washes have been used extensively. Keep looking for the cool combinations from Mavi.

  • Replay SS’ 14 Men’s Denim Lookbook

The coming Spring Summer 2014 denim collection of Replay has lots of ripped and destroyed shirts and jackets. They use some eye catching styles and details and styles including slouchier jeans,  heavy sprays and bleaches, some patchwork , creating two tones using multiple fabrics and very contrasting washes on the upper and lower parts of the jeans. Subdued patterns in prints are visible mainly in the shirts and double , triple denims combinations are created using combinations of indigo casts and colors, prints etc and can be very pleasing for consumers (and denim suppliers!). Replay men’s summer lookbook is about good old work wear inspired outfits. Grunge inspiration is visible on the collection , but distressing on jeans seems to be missing. The styles are casual and models look at ease – giving an original appearance. Colors are conspicuous by their absence except for one nice red color jeans.

  • Shade Control In Indigo Dyeing | Part 3

This is a technical article by Harry Mercer on the process of Shade control in Indigo dyeing. This is the  third in the series. The first  and second part of this article were published before .

    Standard Illuminants

standard light illuminantsAs stated earlier in this series, colour starts with a light source or illuminant. Illuminants have been standardized since 1931 by the Commission Internationale d’Eclairage (CIE). Illuminants are specified by a reference colour temperature such as 6500 degrees Kelvin., which is commonly referred to as D6500, (D identifying as a “daylight source). D6500 is a standard daylight illuminant in the United States and Northern Europe, originally to replicate light on the north side of a building in Chicago at noon. This specification of a light source by a colour temperature was originally established with a device known as a blackbody radiator. This is a small metal sphere with an opening which emits this specific illuminant when heated to a temperature of 6500 degrees Kelvin. Another example is Illuminant A, basically the colour of a tungsten filament lamp, which has a heavy red influence and a correlated colour temperature of 2856 degrees Kelvin.

    Specular Component

“Specular” refers to the mirror-like quality of a fabric surface-the manner and directions in which light is scattered, which is a separate consideration from the colour itself. Appearance of a fabric is a combination of color and surface effects. The specular reflection of a sample differs depending on fiber characteristics, yarn count, yarn twist, fabric construction and finishing. These surface effects are neutralised during visual colour evaluation by using specific viewing geometries which relate the angle of the light source to the fabric and the angle between the human observer and the sample. For example, the 45˚/0˚viewing geometry, which neutralises the specular component, allowing a clear view of the colour only, means that the angle between the light source and the sample is 45˚ and the angle between the observer and sample is 0˚ or perpendicular to the sample. Colour measuring instruments offer this and other special viewing geometries to eliminate the specular or surface factors in measurement. If it is desired to include the specular component, then the option known as Specular Excluded (SEX) can be selected. The other option is include the specular component known as Specular Included (SIN). The Specular Excluded is superior for focusing on dyeing variation and prediction of washed colours, while Specular Included measurements are useful for rating the combined colour and physical differences of denim.

    Tolerances

A tolerance, in regard to colour measurement, is a numerical difference between the standard color approved by the customer and the colour measurement of the fabric that was provided to the customer. In order to be indicative of a true visually noticeable colour difference, the tolerances should be established based on what a human being would recognize as a visual difference between 2 colours. As a general rule, if there is a total colour difference of ΔE equal to 0.2 between 2 samples, these samples can be considered visually different. With Indigo-dyed denim, this is also true if the colour difference between 2 samples has a value of ΔL = 0.2 in light-dark difference or Δb = 0.2 in yellow-blue difference. However, shades of Indigo are more sensitive in the Δa, red-green difference. In the U.S., it was standard to use a tolerance of only 0.08 for Δ a, meaning that if 2 samples differed by that much, they were considered different shades. This is not only because of the greater visual contrast in red-green differences, but also because of Indigo colour after washing. As Indigo develops a redder or less green shade, it loses colour in washing more quickly. For that reason, the Δa is a good general indicator of how easily Indigo will fade. Δh (hue difference) provides the same indication and is a more precise predictor.

Many denim operations, as well as other textile operations use larger tolerances to specify shade differences from standard. These can be as high as 1.0ΔE to distinguish a slight shade difference, but this tolerance size allows up to 5 different shades to be shipped to the customer as the same colour.

    By the numbers

Only by intelligent use of available colour data can the extensive problems with managing shade variation in Indigo dyed denims be systematically brought under the control needed to conform to the customer’s expectations. Colour measuring instrument programs provide massive amounts of direct information that is objective, but the data must be studied and analyzed in order to effectively manage colour, which is the most critical factor in denim success. Factors such as Standard Deviation are the most useful in determining progress, or the lack of it, in reducing Indigo shade variation. The Standard Deviation will demonstrate the relative degree of variation in Indigo dyeing between companies, products, machines, procedures, workers etc. and is the best tool for setting objectives for managers. In far too many denim companies, little concern is demonstrated within the production areas for identifying the sources of colour variation. The standard approach is to resort to shade-sorting or tapering programs that only establish the degree of failure in colour management.

    Recommendations

    1) ILLUMINANT- Illuminant A has long been recognized as a better light source for distinguishing true colour differences in denim, because of the greater sensitivity of Indigo to red-green colour difference. This will increase the number of to allow the laundry to sort the fabric more reliably in terms of wash-fastness.

    2) SPECULAR COMPONENT-While the Specular Included is normally used for fabric shipments, the Specular Excluded is more useful for evaluating the effects of dyeing directly, avoiding the influences of weaving and finishing on denim which is significant.

    3) TOLERANCES-Review the colour tolerance used in shade sorting or tapering to determine if it is realistic and allows conformance to the customer’s expectation.

    4) COLOUR ORDER SYSTEM- While the L*a*b* colour arrangement is in common use, the L*c*h*(chroma and hue) arrangement allows better communication between denim producers and customers. While the L*a*b* arrangement orders colour in a way that approximates how garment buyers see colour, the L*c*h* arrangement relates more directly to how colour managers, as in dyeing perceive colour.

    5) EDUCATION-In order to raise the level of professionalism of those responsible for colour management, detailed, scientifically-based training is badly needed in the denim business in every sector in order to minimize dissatisfaction on the part of customers. There are training resources available from colour instrument vendors on line or colour experts for in-factory training. Selection of staff for colour nmanagement is critical since less than 5% of people are able to grasp the concepts involved, so objective evaluation of colour staff is necessary to maintain an image of professionalism.

  • 7 For All Mankind Spring Summer 2014 Women’s Lookbook

Seven for all Mankind does not , once again,  fail to create a totally different look for the season. The SS’14 women’s collection creates a striped look both in bottoms and tops mixing fabrics with denim . Leather combination can be seen but too prominently at various places on the garment. On the one hand the are the light colored jeans (bleach washes) and on the other are dark black colors with shiny coats and leather. The girls tops / shirts use  some reflective silky  fabrics made from finer counts of yarns and processed with shiny finishes. A sprinkle of prints add further spice to the collection.

  • Women Jeans Imported Into US Under Special Programmes | 2012 vs 2013

US has treaties with a number of countries/regions around the world which enables them to export duty free or on concessional duties to USA.  Regional agreements like NAFTA, AGOA, West Bank & QIZs , DR-CAFTA, Jordan- US, Andean Act etc are some of the treaties which enable such preferential trade.  So , how do these trade agreements promote the import of jeans into US. Do the imports under these agreements enable these regions to export significant number of jeans to US? Are their numbers growing or reducing ? How are the prices from these regions as compared to non-preferred regions which export to the US? What is the % of exports under special programmes as compared to non-prefered regions ? Do these regions also export to US denim apparel which do not get covered under the regional pact benefits ?

We will explore the answers to above mentioned questions related to export of women’s jeans under Special Import programmes for 2012 and 2013 . The information can be downloaded in an excel sheet and the analysis of the same is given .

    [private_special]

Exports of Women’s Jeans to US under Special Programmes vs Without programmes

    image

From the data in the attached sheet, we can see that about 230 million pcs of women’s jeans were imported into the US in 2012. Out of these about 16.4% of jeans are exported under special programmes and balance from regions which are not covered under any special programmes. However, when we compare the period Jan-Oct 2013 vs Jan-Oct 2012, we find that the % of share of exports under special programmes has fallen by about 2% to 14.4%. The major fall has been from the AGOA region (-28%)while the West Bank & QIZ regions experienced an increase of about 11% in their exports of women jeans to US in 2013. Colombia also experienced an increase under special programmes though their overall quantities are quite low.

When we come to pricing , we find that the prices from Special programme areas average $9.22 per piece in 2012 while the prices have increased to $9.77 in 2013 , showing an increase of about 5% . Majority of this increase comes from NAFTA region (5.25%) and AGOA (3.11%) . Colombia shows a large increase but , again, these are based on small quantities. The prices from other regions not under special programmes show an increase of about 1.55%.

Top four regions – The top region in terms of exports of women’s jeans to US is , predictably , NAFTA.  With about 11million women jeans exported in 2012 to US , it has the highest numbers followed closely by the AGOA region at about 9 million jeans. The West Bank, Gaza &QIZs (including Egypt) follows closely at about 8 million jeans . At fourth number stands Jordan under the Jordan US pact.

However, when we look at quantities , we find that the quantities of women jeans exported under the Special programmes from various regions to the US is not very high. However, the quantities of men’s jeans exported from some of these regions like Mexico is much higher. We will explore that in next report.

For the moment , we will also check if the all exports from a region are only done under the special programmes or also without such programmes. We will take the example of Mexico. Mexico is the main exporting country to US under NAFTA (Canada is negligible)   Under this agreement, Mexico is able to use the US fabric and some other origins for export of garments duty free to US. However are all its  exports of women Jeans under the NAFTA agreement or also as normal exports which does not entails these exports the preferential benefits.  Lets look at the table below :

Exports of women jeans from Mexico (2012-2013)

    Category 2012 2012 (Jan- Oct) 2013 (Jan-Oct)
Total 11.8 million pcs 9.88 million pcs 9.3 million pcs
Under NAFTA 10.8 million pcs 8.9 million pcs 8.7 million pcs
Without NAFTA 1 million pcs 1 million pcs approx 0.6 million pcs approx

So, from the table above we find that Mexico has been exporting about 10% of women jeans which are not covered under NAFTA. In 2013 , this number fell to about 7%. This indicates that buyers in US also buy from the special zones apparel which are sometimes not covered by the regional pacts and their benefits.
