  • Natural Dyes –Green Tea Dyeing For Denim

    Soorty product development

This is an article by Soorty Product Development Team

Color is what makes our nature so beautiful and we are inspired by them also want to paint our lives in their colorful palates. We are living in a age where most dyes  are manufactured synthetically and we can’t have any grouse  as they are physically and chemically superior to those naturally produced by our forefathers and  ,most importantly, they are cheaper.

But if we really study our dyes we would understand that most of them our inspired from naturally occurring dyes. Let’s have a look at the table below for instance:

    Red Dyes

    · Safflower .· Caseapina ,· Madder ,· Lac

    Yellow Dyes

    · Bogainvillea ,· Golden Rod ,· Teak ,· Marigold ,· Parijata ,· Kimbazi flower

    Blue Dyes

    · Indigo ,· Woad ,· Suntburry ,· Pivet ,· Water lily

    Black dyes

    · Lac ,· Alder ,· Rofblamala ,· Custard Apple ,· Harda

    Brown Dyes

    · Caesalpina ,· Bougainvillea ,· Balsam ,· Marigold  ,· BlackBerries

    Green Dyes

    · Tulsi ,· Bougainvillea ,· Canna ,· Lily ,· Nettles

    Orange

    · Dahlia,· Annato

     Mordants

Dyes from the natural sources have poor fastness properties. Natural dyes require mordant to fix them to the fabric and prevent color from fading. There are three types of mordants:

    Metallic mordants

Metal salts of aluminum, chromium , iron copper and tin are used

    Tannins

Myrobalan and Sumuch are the commonly used tannins

    Oil Mordants

Oil mordants are used mainly in the dyeing of turkey red color from madder. The main function of the oil mordant is to form a complex with alum used as the main mordant. The sulfonated oils, which possess better metal binding capacity than the natural oils due to the presence of sulfonic acid group, bind to metal ions forming a complex with the dye to give superior fastness and hue.

    Innovative uses of Natural Dyes

Natural dyes are being used as photo sensitizer for titanium di oxide based dye sensitized solar cells. They are useful to create a new kind of solar cells which can revolutionize the solar cell industry.

Natural dyes are also used as an anti ultra violet light protector finish. This is preventing skin cancers. They are also being used in water filtration and purification.

Anti microbial Properties of Natural dyes

    Soorty Tea Article

Textile materials and clothing are known to be vulnerable to microbial activity, as these provide large surface area and soak up moisture required for microbial augmentation .Natural fibers have protein (keratin) and cellulose, etc., which supply essential requirements such as moisture, oxygen, nutrients and temperature for bacteria development and multiplication. This often leads to objectionable odor, dermal infection, product deterioration, allergic responses and other related diseases. Some of the natural dyes also tend to show antimicrobial properties. Dyes derived from Acacia catechu, Quercus infectoria, Rubia cordifolia(madder) and Rumex maritimus show anti microbial activity. Soorty has collection by the name of “University Life”, which exhibits excellent anti microbial properties.

    Natural Dye: Green tea

    Soorty Tea Article

Mian Sajeel Sohail  from the Product development department of Soorty explains how they ventured in to developing a cast inspired by tea.

“We all are green tea addicts, specially myself. I come to office and first thing I want to have is my jasmine green tea. Once I accidently poured my tea over a denim leg which was on my table. The denim leg was sprayed with PP. I left my desk for a meeting and when I came back I noticed a slight yellowish-greenish tint. That made us curious and started a month long “Green tea” Spill marathon. I used to pour around 10 ml of tea on the same leg everyday for a month and result was quite astonishing”

Tea is a very complex compound and there are many parts of it which may contribute to the color of tea extract. A common tea contains:

    Soorty Tea Article

    – Flavones

    – Amino Acids

    – Enzymes

    – Pigments

    – Carbohydrates

    – Minerals

Flavanols is a type of polyphenol and there are many kind of polyphenols in tea but Flavanols have always been area of great interest. Green tea has higher level of flavnoids as compared to black tea.

    clip_image011

    Figure 1Flavanol structure

The green yellowish hue is due to oxidation and methylation of Flavanol during tea processing. Even though the tint is temporary but we can increase the fixation by metal mordants.

Apart from color what benefits can dye extracts from tea can have:

    Recycling of tea waste

    – Deodorizing effect

    – Non polluting effluents

    – Bio degradable

    – Non-azo

    – Non toxic

This small experiment with tea has helped us to develop a new wash with tea stain cast. Efforts are on to further stabilize this look and we look forward to some great developments in this area.

  • Stain Free White Jeans from Joe’s Jeans

White Jeans has been of the flavours this summer as it has been so many times before. The jeans look elegant and combine with most colours to give a great summer or even a party look. However, the biggest drawback in wearing these jeans is the issue of staining making one very conscious and reserved while being in them.
To do away with this drawback Joe’s Jeans brings out a new line of stain resistant white denim, appropriately named Play Dirty, Stay Spotless which repels coffee, oil, soda and even red wine.. The brand claims that the stain free character of the jeans lasts for twenty home laundries and is very effective repelling all kinds of stains. Though there have been many previous efforts at bringing out stain free jeans, this one looks cool.

However, the denim line, which ranges from $145 for jean shorts to $189 for an office-appropriate trouser style, does come with a disclaimer: The garment will not repel pigment-based colour stains such as makeup, nail polish, lip gloss and paint.

The company however says that if staining may occur with liquids containing colour, these stains can be removed easily when dry cleaned.

  • EU Revokes 26% Duty on Women Jeans Imports From US

After imposing a retaliatory duty of 26% additional duty on women’s jeans to be imported from US last year taking the total duty to 38% on such imports, EU decided to revoke the same few days back and bring the duty levels to 12.5%.

This decrease of import tax wil great news for  the Californian garment industry, which  produces roughly 75 percent of premium made in the US denim. The tariff hike was previously introduced in retaliation for the Byrd Amendment (a law which allowed the US to impose additional duties on undervalued imports), despite the World Trade Organization ruling against it in 2002. The duties previously collected are still being handed out as precondition legal procedures are completed.

In response the WTO has allowed each country to be affected to raise its tariff on items imported from the US in direct relation to the amount of AD or CV duties on the items from said country which were distributed over the previous year. This led EU to announce additional duties of 26% on the women’s denim jeans as a retaliation.

Since the adding premium womens denim to the list back in 2013, the distribution amount for 2013 has reduced by nearly 50 percent, which led the EU to lower its additional tariffs on women’s jeans and other affected items. However , EU still has the option to impose  26 percent tariff next year.
Various exporting companies from US have been hiring legal firms to claim refunds on various grounds including the arguments that “jeans do not fall under the definition of denim!!”.

Did the duties made an impact on imports of women jeans into EU?

It would be interesting to understand whether the imposition of duties affected the imports of women jeans into EU from US. Absolutely YES!!

The imports in 2013 fell by over 31% as compared to those in 2012. This was a drastic fall and should hve affected the Californian jeans industry in not a small way. Lets take a look at the chart below to understand the actual figures of imports in 2012 and 2013 including volumes, prices , values etc.

    [private_special]

Women’ Denim Jeans Imports from US in 2012-2013

    Value(million euros) 32.56 23 -29%
    Average Price (euro/pc) 37.46 38.39 +2.48%

As we can see from the above table the actual shipments fell br 31% clearly showing the impact of duties. It is also interesting to see that the prices did not fall and in fact increased marginally indicating the preference of US exporters not to reduce their prices in response to duty imposition.

  • EU Jeans Imports Increase 8.3% In 2013

Denim Imports in EU27 countries showed a sharp increase of over 8% in 2013 as compared to same period in 2012. This is one of the sharpest increase in the recent years and augurs well for the industry . This increase is likely to reflect in the year 2014 as well. Many important exporting countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan showed their significant improvement in their volumes while some of the countries like China had to suffer reductions. The average price of jeans imports , however, reduced by

In this report we will cover  a number of tables including the following :

    • The total volumes of  denim apparel imported into EU in 2013 , their average prices and values.
    • Change in Men’s jeans imported in this period with their average prices, volumes etc.
    • Change in Women’s jeans imported in this period with their average prices, volumes etc.
    • Top exporting countries during 2013 with their volumes, prices etc.
    • Top exporters of men’s and women’s jeans worldwide who exported to EU during 2013 . We will analyse which countries are stronger in the men’s jeans segment and which are stronger in women’s jeans.
    • Specific details on some important countries export figures.

    [private_special]

First of all lets look at the figures of total import of jeans into EU in 2013 as compared to 2012. From the figures below we can see that there is a significant increase of about 8.3% in 2013 from 454 million pieces to 492 million pcs. The value of these imports is about Euro 3.68 billion in 2013 as compared to  Euro 3.53 billion in 2012. This also reflects a comparative reduction in average prices from Euro 7.78 to Euro 7.48.  The reason for this increase could be more clear as we look at more data.

Lets look at individual data of some of important exporting countries.

    Bangladesh

Lets look at one of the most imp exporting country ie Bangladesh.  This country had one of the most significant increase in exports of about 20% . This increase is even more significant when we consider that Bangladesh had been going through a turmoil in 2013 and was politically disturbed in 2013. It still increased its export volumes –though the average export  price from Bangladesh  reduced by about 6%. This also affected and brought down the average price of  jeans imported into EU .

We now come to the top exporting country to EU ie China. Though China is still the largest exporter to EU27 for Jeans, Bangladesh is breathing on its neck and is almost at similar qty levels as that of China. China has experienced negative growth of about 4%  compared to 20% positive growth of Bangladesh.  It also suffered a fall in prices of about 10%.

    Pakistan

Pakistan is a country getting more and more important as a jeans exporting hub for EU. With the recent duty free access to Pakistan, 2014 will see a huge surge in imports of jeans from Pakistan. However, what is surprising is that even in 2013 when Pakistan did not have this benefit, the increase in volumes is over 23% !! . This shows the inherent strength of Pakistan as an exporter of denim to EU.

    Turkey

Turkey is another important exporting country for EU. It has been a large exporter since last many years. Though Turkey is getting more and more expensive (their average prices are more than double that of Pakistan, BD or China)  , still it retains the benefit of high fashion and  quick turnaround for retailers and buyers in EU and hence does not lose market share to other countries easily. Their volumes and prices remain more or less same in 2013.

A small country to look at would be Mauritius . Mauritius had been regularly losing its business to other countries over the last few years. However, during 2013 there has been a decent increase in its volumes – propelled by overall increase in consumption in Mauritius . This augurs well for the country . According to discussions with some exporters from Mauritius , the reason for this increase has been diversion of orders from some of the exporting countries like Bangladesh.

We had looked at the top exporting countries for all jeans in the above table. But when we look closely and differentiate between men’s and women’s jeans, we find that certain rankings change. In the table below for Men’s jeans imports into EU, we can see that Bangladesh overtakes China by a huge margin .  Bangladesh is clearly the top exporter of men’s jeans to EU currently.  Pakistan and Tunisia are also comparatively stronger in men’s denim as compared to women’s.

  • Interview With Katsu Manabe | Momotaro Japan

Interview With Katsu Manabe | Momotaro Japan

We had the pleasure to talk to Mr Katsu Manabe of the Momotaro / Japan   Blue family who make waves in the denim industry worldwide with their original and authentic denims.  He speaks to Denimsandjeans.com in length about how he got involved in his father’s denim business, and about the the  philosophy and concepts in the collections from Momotaro / Japan Blue and what is real good denim for him.

    1. Pl do tell us about your denim background. How you came to be associated with this industry?

I’m Katsu Manabe, son of the owner of Japan Blue Group. But I was not interested in denim until I found what our company had done. It wasInternational developper Katsu Manabe
1995-1997, I was just a usual high-school student who was interested in fashion, games sports etc.. At that time, vintage denim replica trend started, then many stores made their own denim. I had Levi’s 501XX replica, then I bought some piece of store original replica denim( Japan made). A year after, I found exact same denim in father’s office and he told me that its made by him.. I was surprised..I found several fabrics and samples which I wanted to buy and it was huge trend in the market at that time.. After all , I started work his company. I had experience
for overseas production manager and taking care of the store, opened the
website, after all ,started to sell material and garment in overseas
market. It was around 15years back .

2.How do you think an American product came to be perfected in Japan and actually becoming a symbol of best quality denim worldwide  with raw denim being at the centre of this attention.

After 2nd war, U.S military brought us a lot of clothing, and its so
interest and cool for Japanese at that time. I think we love not only
the denim, also American culture behind. Its so diffrent culture than
    Japan.
Past 100years Levi’s build denim as a daily wear and work wear in the
market. Most of people still think denim=Levi’s=U.S.  And this is
    history and its never change.
But professional people, designers, manufactures, craftsmans, they
undersatnd what the quality is. We love American culture and denim.
But we’ve been trying to make the best quality denim in this 50years.
I bring high quality japanese raw denim to Europe and US market since 2007 and try to build up raw denim market in 6years. Past 3 years there are
many raw denim brands that  appeared  in the market.
I’m so happy that people have interest again in  raw material which was the trend  1995 in Japan. I know its good way to enjoy the denim and people
will think about quality of denim material after you wear a pair of
jeans. The best quality denim, that customer will decide.
We are just trying to produce the best material.

3.Pl tell us how Momotaro grew from its origins and how it came to become an iconic symbol for denim lovers worldwide.

President Hisao Manabe Momotaro started is 2005 as store original denim (Rampuya Original denim). We just tried to make a pair of the best Japan made denim for Japanese Indigo momo logopeople. Our president wanted to put some name on this label which can easy to understand its from Okayma, Japan. And we put the Momotaro name as a label. For Japanese people, Momotaro is one of famous fairy tales (like a “Peter Pan”). And this source of story came from Okayama. So
people know Momotaro=Okayama. And we try to connect
    Momotaro=Okayama=denim=No.1
In this 6years,I started selling overseas market and trying to visit the
store as much as possible. Bring all the samples, telling history and
culture, spirit, japanese denim..etc. We don’t think we are the best,we just try to be the best. Our friends and denim lovers who share our spirit, they bring us into the market.

4.What is the basic concept behind Momotaro collections? Do you go  for seasonal collections or timeless ones which are not affected by seasons.

    Concept:
Momotaro Jeans uses only the best natural raw materials and dyes the cotton yarn with pure indigo to weave the Original denim using its vintage looms by hand.
At Momotaro Jeans, the artisans have a saying:  Made by hand without
    compromise
    g. All you have to do is try on a pair of Momotaro Jeans and
you will see for yourself from the exquisite details and rich indigo
blue that Momotaro jeans are of superior quality.
Mainly we sell timless collection. But we also sell seasonal collection
mostly in Japanese market. I try to build Euro collection which not
selling to Japan.  Normally we don’t make big discount sale.

5.You also have the Japan Blue brand. How is it different from Momotaro?

Japan Blue started from Euro,U.S and Asia then Japan. = its focus
overseas market and focus on material. Not only denim but high quality
    material.
Momotaro started for Japanese market then Asia-US-Euro. = focus the best quality vintage denim.

Modefabriek Momotaro & Japan Blue logo

6.There is a lot of misunderstanding on the kind of looms used by denim pioneers  in Japan for making denim. Do you think these  looms  were all imported from US mills ? What role did these looms play in bringing up the Japanese denim industry?

50years ago Belgium looms maker export them machine to the world, and
some of our craftman remeber the machine came from Belgium also
technician came to teach how to work. And we also use vintage deadstock”TOYODA” looms which TOYOTA car company started them business in 1890. Shuttle rooms shuttle machine2

7.You are also a unique brand because you weave your own denim. Do you think it makes a huge difference to have your denim woven by yourselves?

Our sister company Collect Textile has been trying to produce high quality material and denim for 22years.
I think raw denim needs good quality material. If we want to try to build the best quality denim in the world, that’s the best way to weave your own material. Ofcourse you need a lot of knowledge ,experience and practice for the same..

8.What role do you think does cotton play in denim quality . I believe you use mainly Zimbabwe cotton.  There must be  a strong reason  behind the same.

Yes, we mainly used Zimbabwe cotton. Its one of the finest cottons and
long staple, its can create great color with Indigo. Also it gets softer
after uses, makes good fade and fit your body.
    zimbabwe cotton raw cotton zimbabwe

9.How do you think Japanese denim fashion has changed in last decade . I am sure it must be reflecting in your collections too!

    Its changed like this –
    Hard washing denim->Natural fade denim.
Hard raw denim -> Rinsed raw denim.
    Vintage replica -> original denim
Of course we follow this change but not always. We want to create new
vintage generation with new denim history for next 100years by Japanese
    denim.

10.Many thanks for taking out time to speak to us. Any advice for denim lovers ?

Enjoy with your raw denim, your life will appear on your denim. Its your
    history of denim.

  • Levis Water Recyle / Reuse Standard Launched

levis Levi Strauss & Co. announced that they’ve developed both the technology and a 3rd party certified standard to produce clothing using 100% recycled water—a landmark development for an industry heavily reliant on water for textile finishing.

LS&Co. has implemented the 100% recycled water standard in a factory in China and soon they’re going to expand to a factory in Nicaragua, with the end goal of taking this technology to their supply chain and publicly sharing their 3rd party standards for other retailers to use.

This appears to be an industry first and is verifiable by third parties and aims to reduce the impact of garment production on water resources.

    water recycle and reuse copy

The process is being used in one of the brand’s key Chinese factories, which bleaches, dyes and stone washes garments to achieve specific looks or feels. The factory, located in southern China, worked with Levi Strauss produce over  100,000 pairs of jeans  with the new technology.

The process is still in the testing phases, but the goal is to eventually use 100% recycled water to finish a broader range of Levi Strauss products at factories in other parts of the world.

Michael Kobori, VP of Sustainability at Levi’s replied to questions from Denimsandjeans.com  about the various aspects of this process

What % of waste water is recycled in this process?

In our test program we focused on showing it was possible to finish high quality products using 100% recycled water. Only a portion of the water used within a factory was recycled and treated for re-use. Since we do not know the total volume of wastewater produced in the factory for other brands, we cannot calculate the percentage of wastewater that is recycled.

Do you think the cost of such recycling is economically feasible for your products ?

As with Levi Strauss’ Water<less program, there is an investment in equipment, however, factories using our 100% recycled water standard will see cost savings over time because they will use less water and energy. There are also many social and environmental benefits that are harder to quantify, such as reducing the use of shared resources in neighboring communities in an era of increasing water scarcity. The cost of water still artificially cheap in many parts of the world, and Levi Strauss & Co., along with its suppliers, is focusing on the sustainability benefits of this program.

Does this process require some high end technological equipment not normally used in garment factories?

Our standard will require some new equipment to be installed but these advanced wastewater treatment technologies are available to all suppliers. Participating factories have the flexibility to install whatever is the most cost-effective combination of equipment to meet our stringent Recycle & Reuse water quality standard. Depending on their particular existing wastewater quality, some factories will find that only a relatively modest investment is required to qualify for the program.

Do you see this technology being used for a larger portion of your productions worldwide ?

We don’t want to stop at one laundry with 100,000 units. The goal is to scale it across many of our factories and collections, depending on the economic feasibility among individual factories. We are currently working with suppliers in Central America, Pakistan, and China to evaluate their potential in the program.

This is a unique  initiative from Levi’s and, if successful , can change the way the industry makes apparel worldwide with a huge positive impact on water resources.

Though Scotch & Soda has been around since the ‘80s, the Amsterdam-based fashion brand as we know it today originates in a brave new start in 2001, when three new owners joined their broad experience and shared love for making great garments. After Scotch & Soda was re-launched for Spring Summer 2002, Scotch Shrunk was added for Spring Summer 2008. Literally shrinking men’s styles to little brother or son sizes was a completely new take on kids wear and made the brand popular.
