Burberry is not a typical denim label. In fact , it is hard to see any denims in Burberry collections. However, during the Spring’17 runway,  we find some elegant -but not so real (distressed, overworked) – denim  showing up. Wide legged jeans for women with an offbeat blue color , interestingly embroidered hems, and workwear look jackets and pants for men in cord denims were the only two pieces which came up and represented the denim industry in Burberry collection !
Denim is a perennial source of fascination for designers like Faustine Steinmetz who use turn denim making into an art form. She studies the various trends originating in different regions of the world and develops the idea further.
The  current collection for AW 17 has been inspired by trends in Nordic regions, Israel, South America etc. She goes from very clean and tidy Nordic looks to mashed up denims with embroideries and embellishments in South America and attractive washes in Israel. She develops further on these themes and adds her own special element of touch there.  Her collection always stands out in a market where thousands of brands and designers bring out their own variations to denim. Its not many times that you see Tommy Hilfiger come out with such an Instagrammable collection with social media in mind !
A collaboratiion with Giga Hadid who used her beach background and reference to some archives to bring out a 90s patchworked , hand embroidered jazzy collection which can be an instant hit on social media among the young cool generation of today ! The designer used the patchworks , embroideries, stripes, motifs and mixed fabrics to get stunning looks and a throwback to that carefree era of 80s and 90s ! Even the plain chinos got young and elevated with the embroideries and patchworks !
The collection launch was also unique in other ways. It was launched in California and not NY. The designer used the fashion event to show his solidarity for the #TiedTogether movement, by getting his models to sport white bandanas in protest of Donald Trump’s anti-refugee order attaching a political view to the launch .
Do we smell correctly that the DENIM MASHUP theme is getting stronger and stronger ?
We thought that Mashed up denim – with external elements like emborideries , patches, embellishments etc – was mainly a womens’ denim trend . However, D&G prove it otherwise with their Fall 2017 mens’ colllection. We can see all kinds of brocade patch jeans, embroideries, sketches, mosaics and all plastered all over the jeans and jackets for men in the collection. The number of buttons, threads, patches etc attached to one garment could easily put an Indian bride’s wedding dress to shame !. To top it all are the canine looks attached to the jackets for that real cold winter season.
After collaborating with Adidas , Coca Cola and even The Lox , the New York based streetwear brand KITH unveiled their new Spring/Summer 2017 collection. This the first time when the brand dedicated their collection exclusively for Denim . The collection includes two cuts of jeans and a trucker jacket. Crafted from 12 oz Moroccan denim cloth, each pair has gone through intense washing and development cycles for over a year to meet standards for intense quality and feel as well as comfort. The brand also came up with distressed denim jacket in both the color - blue and black. The jeans also come in the light indigo and black, as well as a grey option.
Kith also returns to their classic Astor Bomber Jacket and undershirts. The brand has also collaborated with LA based brand Calux to create waffle thermal sweatshirts and sweatpants in grey and light purple. The KITH Spring 2017 collection is available at all KITH locations and its official site.

Japanese label FDMTL (Fundamental Agreement Luxury) recently unveiled its lookbook for their new Spring / Summer 2017 collection. The brand continues to offer selection of patchwork pieces come to fore as the Japanese-bred imprint is apt to purvey. In FDMTL’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, they continue their never ending experimental journey into denim while also including other pieces to show versatility and well-roundedness. The indigo items in the collection play with beautifully executed patchwork done with a vintage feel. The collection also underscores a workman’s casual aesthetic which we find to be simply mouth watering.
After the collaboration with Industrial Designer Marc Newson and Artist Pharrell Milliams , G-Star Raw recently collaborated with designer Atior Throup in October 2016 and announced him as the brand’s executive creative director. Last year Pharell Milliams launched his first collection which were made by using recycled plastic removed from the oceans and this year the newly appointed creative director Atior unveiled his first collection at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
USING SUPERIOR ITALIAN SELVEDGE DENIM FOR ALL PIECES, THE COLLECTION EXPLORES ITS ABSOLUTE EXTREMES: FROM UNTREATED, LOOM-STATE FABRIC TO BLEACHED WHITE
The collection mainly uses the selvedge denims and presents them at various stages – from untreated fabric to white bleached and the intermittent stages. The designer aims to show how the selvedge denims can look at different stages of being processed with signature G-Star 3D looks combined with high tech space suit elements. The designing is extremely detailed and deserves applause !
The STRETT offers a refined take on a classic sportswear piece. It comes with an integrated, detachable backpack and an engineered hood adding to the jacket’s strong identity – functional yet progressive.
Featuring a spiral 3d sleeve seam, the DELINE jacket explores a new, angular design language, where the focus lies on concinnity – the balance and harmony of lines, where they meet and how they interact. The strapping system in the back allows the jacket to be carried on the shoulders when not in use.
The 5620 motion is a hybrid of traditional workwear jeans and motorcycle pants. Its ergonomic design is constructed using the 3d denim approach with reinforced 3d knees, integrated rib inserts, and engineered stretch self-fabric panels.
The STRETT parka is a new take on the classic parka, featuring an integrated detachable backpack, simple yet extreme.
The RACKAM bomber is the new interpretation of the classic bomber jacket – the sleeve is segmented into big, bold blocks, which create an ergonomic shape. The large back pocket contains a detachable strapping system, which allows the jacket to be carried on the shoulders when not in use.
The RACKAM jeans use a new approach to 3d pattern cutting. Bold, horizontal lines cut through the garment – creating seemingly straight blocks. Each line contributes to the overall ergonomic shape, whilst allowing the integration of additional pockets.

Wrangler, the famous American jeans label ,recently launched and has used its Fall ‘17 preview to unveil  a 1970s inspired collection – Retro Glory . 1970s was the era of innovations and witnessed some of the most classic trends and designs and this launch is a wholesome tribute to that era. The launch of Retro Glory collection is also very special as it has been launched to celebrate the 70th birth year of Wrangler. The collection features four special elements :
Rainbow graphic T-shirts, cut-off shorts and skirts and cropped straight jeans in rainbow colors have been offered for Women’s wear in this collection . Men’s collection includes rainbow graphic T-shirts and sweatshirts, western shirts, slim tapered fit jeans in rainbow bright and a rigid denim Stone Dyed jean with rips and repairs .
This collection is also a classic example of old Denim Mashup era as it features patching, ripping, embellishment and embroidery, oversized trucker jacket in Stone Dyed denim with full back panel embroidery by an Artist Luke McLean in this collection.
KUON works with Japanese vintage fabrics including BORO and upcycle them to contemporary wears. They also work with surviving mills all over Japan to carry on Japanese textile heritages.In addition to their signature Boro series, they have further explored Japanese textile heritages in their 4th collection. Working with surviving mills in Northern Japan, they created original textiles of sashiko-ori, machine woven sashiko, as well as sakkora-ori, contemporary sakiori weaving technique supported by Sakkora Japan in Iwate Prefecture. If the Frame Denim Pre Fall 2017-28 collection is to be taken as a benchmark, then we are looking for two key trends in women denim – Flares and Boyfriend jeans. The brand brings out a number of looks in Flare denims whether full length or Capri styles or flare slits. Boyfriend jeans had interesting sewn turn ups . The collection misses excessive distressing or fraying and remains a cool and composed collection.
