    Junya Watanabe SS 19 Collection

    Famous Japanese Fashion Designer- Junya Watanabe, has recently unveiled its SS’19 collection which has very artistic flavor and has been beautifully aligned with contemporary denim fashion. It juxtaposes 90’s of rock n roll fashion with classic & vintage fashion of late 50’s. The patchworks and asymmetric denim arrangements which are somehow forte of every Japanese Fashion Designer, can be seen in Junya Watanabe’s collection with some very amazing artistic approach. Junya Watanabe is known for his innovative and technologically advanced designs that show an appreciation of avant-garde cutting. Watanabe has been called a ‘techno couture’ and is renowned for keeping pure lines and stark shapes.

    The collection featured funky patchwork dresses and top coats, ‘50s-inspired circle skirts, deconstructed ball gowns and lingerie slips sewn into denim overalls and classic white tees along with the asymmetric use of different fabrics along with denim, differentially washed denim pieces in a single garment construction and colorful non-denim patches.

    Dolce & Gabbana SS 2019 : Denim World

    One of the most inclusive collection in Milan Fashion Week this year, Dolce & Gabbana succeeded in attracting audience in its own style.Its line-up included different shapes, sizes , ages and ethnicities. The veteran Italian actors Monica Bellucci and Isabella Rossellini, the plus-size model Ashley Graham, and Emma Weymouth, the first black viscountess in Britain, were included in a model line-up that celebrated glamour beyond the catwalk norm . Instead of ‘D&G’ this year the duo displayed a new description for their Spring/Summer 2019 as ‘DNA’. These letters flashed up on backdrop screen with the names of all 151 women, men and children there who represented Italian life on the runway.

    “The most important thing at this moment is the human touch,” explained Stefano. “It’s true that we live in a digital era and this is not haute couture. But it’s about clothes hand-worked and then put in a machine.”. With hashtags like #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport, womesn’s rights continue to dominate the spotlight. The collection included Sicilian funeral procession, church bells pealing as veiled, black-clad women. The procession of the most sexiest widows’ was seen by Italy for the first time. The moment of fashion show was treated as a theatre with different colors, patterns and stunning designs wore by different celebs.

    Let’s have a look at the  denim part of the  collection that was showcased. It included a wide array of styles and designs – from most basic washes/distresses to complex patchworks / fabric mixes and heavy embellishments .

    Christian Cowan ventured his work as “Inclusion Line” which included athletic T-shirt dresses that meshed with his updated cropped and bedazzled sweatsuits , oversized logo T-shirts , paillette-covered hoodies and playful mini dresses. The designer also targeted the celebrity lovers by dressing various celebrities viz. Cardi B and Lady Gaga with his dresses.

    “I was really inspired by the women who have supported me since day one,” Christian Cowan said backstage after his spring show.

    From baggy denim trousers to checkered body suit , a part of his collection targeted the denim industry as most of the designers are doing currently. The support of Vogue Fashion Fund proved to be very crucial for designer’s brand growth ,

    “Not only did it give me a drive to work harder, but it really made me assess every element of my business to creative. Also, the spotlight has been drawn on me and the advice from the judges and other designers has been amazing as well.”. With a goal of expansion,he recently posted a clip from the hit 80s TV show Dynasty featuring Dominique Deveraux portrayed by Diahann Carroll where she declared “I don’t sleep in my clothes, nor do I sleep with them. I require one bedroom for my wardrobe, and one for myself.”

    A young British designer, Christian Cowan ,born in England, marked the fashion industry 2 seasons ago. He studied at Central Saint Martins & London College of Fashion . Before graduation he could count Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus as clients, with editorial coverage in Elle, Vogue and i-D. He started commercializing his collections from SS’18

    “SS18 was all about translating my vibrant, high impact look, into a more commercial setting whilst remaining true to the brands DNA” . He symbolizes his designs with a brightness in day to day life, ”I design with the same intention as music, it’s there to take you on a journey, sometimes people need a break from the real world and their day to day lives, my designs are here to brighten up your day to day”.

    The SS19 collection showcased by him in New York Fashion Week attracted a great audience with fashion lovers around the world.

    The Christian Cowan denim coupled with  shimmering stones stealth the show at NYFW for elegance.

    The unpredictable french designer label – VETEMENTS has once again come up with some interesting and some outlandish denim pieces on the launch of their latest SS19 collection. The brand has been in news ever since they launched in 2009. Headed by Georgia born designer – Demna Gvaslia – the brand has been bringing out collections which stand apart and are stocked from Pret-a-porter to Nordstrom. Almost all the designs, dominate the street style genre . The designs are aggressive and featuring the designs which includes top stitch , ripped , baggy , patches , denim on denim and differential washed leg panels. They have not been washed but worn for a while so the indigo has been rubbed off at the ridges of the 3D front moustaches and back knee honeycombs, creating electric blue abrasions.

    Dutch Premium Denim Brand- DENHAM has recently unveiled its AW18 Collection which is inspired by Jason Denham’s own heritage in the Northern English countryside, from the steel foundries of Sheffield to the rolling Yorkshire Moors. Designs fuse classic workwear references with indigo fabrics and technical details. They channel the spirit of British country pursuits — think hunting and hiking at historic manor estates — while reflecting DENHAM’s signature utilitarian aesthetic.

    The collection features several types of prints which are inspired by the work of William Morris, an iconic textile designer and key influencer  in the English “Arts and Crafts Movement” of the late 19th century. Graphics combine ornamental floral motifs with playful brushstrokes and Japanese influences, for a true reflection of DENHAM’s  “East meets West” mantra. The autumnal color palette is filled with rich tones like merlot, gold, burnt caramel and deep seaweed.

    In a unique collaboration to make the Jeans more peppy and trendy , Naked & Famous Denim and Japanese video game developer Capcom  have come together to create a capsule collection of jeans featuring the arcade classic Street Fighter 2. This is going to be a classic treat for the Video Game Fanatics as it will add more zeal to their games as well as in style . For this collaboration, jeans featuring the characters from Street Fighter 2 were made using custom woven Japanese selvedge denim fabrics each one designed to embody the persona of the character they are based on. Made in Canada,  the jeans were woven on old-fashioned shuttle looms in the Okayama prefecture of Japan. The brand has released six pieces under this collaboration .

    RYU “HADOKEN” SELVEDGE

    Made with custom developed 12.5oz Japanese stretch selvedge denim to represent the persona of Ryu. The fabric is woven with an uneven bumpy texture representative of the rugged toughness of Ryu. Stretch was added for increased comfort and mobility. Inside the jeans, the interior weft yarns are dyed pale blue symbolizing Ryu’s Hadoken fireball technique. The famous Hadoken icon is embroidered on the back pocket. At the cuffs and coin pocket is a Hadoken colored metallic-blue selvedge edge. A natural vegetable tan leather patch is sewn on the backside of the jeans and features a highly detailed embossed illustration of Ryu performing a Hadoken in blue-foil. Hidden inside the jeans are blue pocket bags screen-printed with Ryu in his Shoryuken dragon punch action pose. Included with each pair is a holofoil pocket flasher featuring eye-catching artwork from Udon Comics.

    The jeans are made from a heavyweight 18oz Japanese selvedge denim with an extreme slub texture representative of the rugged toughness and dark persona of Akuma. The jeans are solid black, dyed on both the warp exterior yarns and weft interior yarns. The all red Selvedge ID and back pocket embroidery are symbolic of the Shun Goku Satsu (“Instant Hell Murder”) also known as the “Raging Demon”, a technique for which Akuma is most famous for. A natural vegetable tan leather patch is sewn on the backside of the jeans and features a highly detailed embossed illustration of Akuma performing a Shakunetsu Hadoken in red-foil.     The jeans are made using a custom developed 12.5oz Japanese Selvedge denim with a greencast dye to symbolize Blanka’s green skin.  This denim starts off dark indigo, but over time with wear and wash, the jeans will eventually fade and become greener.  Blanka’s iconic electrocuted opponent is embroidered on the back pocket. The savage character’s wild orange hair is represented by an orange hair-on-hide leather patch, which features a highly detailed embossed illustration.     The jeans are made using a custom developed 12oz Japanese denim made using a blend of cotton and Chinese Silk to symbolize Chun Li’s Chinese roots.  This denim has a neppy surface and also contains stretch for added comfort and mobility signifying Chun Li’s extraordinary flexibility.  Chun Li’s wrist cuffs are embroidered on the back pocket.     ​The jeans are made from a 15oz Unsanforized Japanese Selvedge denim embodying the persona of the character M. Bison.  The denim is rough and full of character, representative of the toughness and dark persona of the character.  The denim is indigo dyed on the warp (exterior) and dyed purple on the weft (interior) which represents M. Bison’s infamous “Psycho Power”. The red + black Selvedge ID is symbolic of the characters uniform.  The back pocket embroidery features the Shadaloo insignia, the criminal organization headed by M.     In the year 2010, for the first time Jason Denham and Alljan Moehamad came together to create the first DENHAM collection. Moehamad, who goes by the artist name of “Skulljan,” created 10 special edition skull paintings that incorporated DENHAM’s scissors logo. The motif was printed on tees, scarves and inside jackets. In Spring 2018 the pair will fuse their creativity once again – this time through Moehamad’s new label, Atelier Reservé, which he co-owns with designer Deyrinio Fraenk. They work with vintage garments and fabrics, and reconstruct them into new pieces to give them a fresh, new life.

    “The collection includes vintage bleach jeans, a denim jacket and a kimono. The garments incorporate tiger and skull embellishments, embroideries and lasered artworks, fused with the signature DENHAM DNA. This project is a perfect example of a collaboration, bringing creativity together. We’ve used authentic designs, special fabrics and damaged washes to create a unique collection.”, said Alljan Moehamad

    Hennes & Mauritz AB (H&M) is a Swedish multinational clothing-retail company known for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers and children. H&M and its associated companies operate in 62 countries with over 4,500 stores and as of 2015 employed around 132,000 people. It is the second-largest global clothing retailer, just behind Spain-based Inditex (parent company of Zara). The company has a significant on-line presence, with on-line shopping available in 33 countries.

    H&M has not really performed well in the first quarter of 2018 with over 2% fall in revenues and Karl-Johan Persson ,CEO , was forthcoming in accepting the same.

    “The rapid transformation of the fashion retail sector continues. As communicated previously, the start of the year has been tough. 2018 is a transitional year for the H&M group, as we accelerate our transformation so that we can take advantage of the opportunities generated by rapid digitalisation. Weak sales in the fourth quarter, partly caused by imbalances in the assortment for the H&M brand, resulted in the need for substantial clearance sales in the first quarter. The high level of clearance sales combined with unusually cold winter weather had a negative impact on the sales of the spring garments. In the first quarter the H&M group’s sales were unchanged in local currencies. Many of our ongoing initiatives are giving good indications and results, even though they have not yet been implemented at a large enough scale to have a decisive effect on the overall results. The weak sales development combined with substantial markdowns had a significant negative impact on results in the first quarter.

    The shares of almost all markets in H&M sales list showed some decline and USA was the highest among them losing over 10% compared to Q1 2017 sales. The table below shows the sales of H&M for  different countries  for the first quarter of 2017 and 2018, Germany contributes the largest share of about usd 1,010 million for the first quarter of 2017 and with a change of –3% the sales went down to about usd 976 million in first quarter of 2018. The positive change in sales of H&M was seen only in the countries like Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, and Others, where the change was 5%, 2%, 4%, 3%, respectively.

    2. Online Expansion

    The online expansion will continue in 2018 to countries including India, which opened in March, and via franchise partners to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in spring/summer 2018. The plan is to offer e-commerce in all store markets as well as in other markets. New H&M store markets in 2018 will be Uruguay and Ukraine, which will open in the second half of the year. For full-year 2018 a net addition of approximately 220 new stores is planned. Most of the new stores in 2018 will be H&M stores, of which 45 will have H&M Home shop-in-shops, while approximately 90 stores will consist of the brands COS, & Other Stories, Monki, Weekday, ARKET and Afound.     The stores count by region shows that, Europe and Africa regions had a stores count of 2885 stores in 28 feb 2017 and it went upto 2988 stores in 28 feb 2018 , however there was a closure if 20 stores in that region for the first quarter  of 2018. Asia &  Oceania had a stores count of 902 as on 28 feb 2017 and which went upto 1062 stores in 28 feb 2018, it is also to be seen that there was 16 stores opened in the Asia & Oceania region . North & South America has a stores count of 606 in 28 feb of 2017 which went upto 693 stores in 28 feb 2018, it also saw an opening of 8 new stores in first quarter of 2018.

    On the whole, H&M is expanding still but its rate of growth has gone down . It needs to create new ways to take up the digitilization challenge which is chipping away its sales and though it has already done that by opening online stores, it remains to be seen how they perform.
