Levi Vintage Clothing Spring/Summer 2018 Collection

Retro-inspired prints and graphics on beautiful patterned shirts produced by Levi’s® in the 1940s and 1950s, a sun-bleached 1920s balloon pant, 1930s riders chino in a classic wide leg, and interesting front pocket closures , all this you may find at the recently launched in the lookbook of SS’18 collection by Levi’s Vintage Clothing. Every season , Levi’s® Vintage Clothing dives deep into their Archives, dating back as far as 1873, to recreate iconic looks to honor and to celebrate the brand’s such rich heritage.

Not only for men , even ladies can find their key piece this season in the 1950s lot. 701 jeans, which evolved from the first Levi’s® five-pocket jeans made just for women in 1934. The 1950s 701  jeans are made with signature selvedge stitching in pink (instead of the traditional red found on the 501) and includes the original Talon zipper manufactured since 1893. Another option for women craving a casual, beachy look is the 1950s 701 knee-length short. Complete the outfit with a Hawaiian print or polka dot top.

“I spent time on research trips traveling between the Mexican border and Malibu exploring the old surf haunts and meeting current surfers to trace the link from the surf riders of the 1940s to today, and found the same passions still exist,” says Paul O’Neill, Design Director, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing. “This was an era before the classic California surfers we all associate with board shorts and long blond hair … this is where I cast the surfers who would act as models for our lookbook as well.”

Scroll down to see some the most beautiful pieces from the lookbook which take you the early-mid 90’s nostalgia.

    1880 Triple Pleat Blouse | $400.00

The Levi’s® Vintage Clothing 1880’s Triple Pleat Blouse is based on their oldest and earliest denim jacket. A hallmark of Western workwear, it now sits at the company’s  San Francisco archives. It’s named for the three center front pleats, designed to allow for expansion by clipping the threads. Distinguishing features include sewn-on metal branded buttons, large hand pockets with rounded bottoms and a cinched back with a leather patch at the waistband. The Rigid finish comes in indigo denim from the Cone Mills of North Carolina – the company which is now closed. The slubby pattern on the raw fabric look amazingly spring fresh !

PRPS Spring Summer 2018 Collection For Men

Donwan Harell comes out with some really worked upon pieces in his collections which show the amount of effort that each jeans has been invested into. The levels of dry and wet processing on a large number of his pieces makes them outstanding pieces – like the mud jeans – which sometimes also create controversy.  Those kind of jeans may not be the first choice for many consumers as such pieces sometimes make a statement which everyone may not like to . However, the SS 2018 arrivals from PRPS are more down to earth and wearable. Bleach washes, rips, appliques , paint splatters  , 3D wrinkles, aged raw denim looks and other effects define the SS 2018 pieces. Paint splatter colors might be a bit too flashy for men, but choices are individual !

Faustine Steinmetz has always been the designer who gave her own interpretation of denim in each collection. Most of the time, seeming to be playing with elements, her pieces had that ethereal flow which made them come out as kind of super normal . However, current collection is more subdued , though she has used hand felting and knitting techniques to give a super imposed additive look rather than desconstructed distressed look. The ethereal touch still remains in some of the pieces as the felt looks like snow sticking on to them.

  • Diesel Red Tag Collection A Letdown ?

Diesel Red Tag Collection A Letdown ?

Fashion experts talk about the need to be cautious while using a double denim combination dress so that it carries well. The duo combination should have the right contrast colors, differential washes , correct patterns and so on. But not many experts might have expressed opinions about a triple or a quadruple, quintuple, sextuple denim (!!!)  and they might be somewhat lost if they had to do it. What if the top, bottom , belts shoes , caps , ties, scarves etc all are made in denim . What do you call such a dress combination ?

Well, Diesel’s latest collection -the much awaited Red Tag Project has been finally launched  at the Paris Fashion Week recently – and it leaves one wondering whether they are characters out of Harry Potter movie completely dressed in denim ! The collection is totally at odds with traditional DIESEL designs and brings a new take to its designs. Designer Shyane Oliver was behind this conceptual collection and it has started creating buzz after its launch and being labeled as ‘ cool high-end contemporary casual’ by many fashion experts.Oliver is the first designer in a three-part series of collections to be made in collaboration with Diesel. The pieces in the collection included washed oversize denim jacket , skinny jeans reconstructed from a classic jeans jacket, slouchy logo thigh-highs, and a dramatic maxi dress .

The collection revolves around four designs , named on four major global fashion cities- LONDON , NEW YORK, MILANO, and PARIS. The names of cities have been allotted to different categories according to their traditional Western clothing influence over the respective looks. The LONDON and NEW YORK designs are GENDERFREE and can be worn easily by both sexes. Some of the queer touches which also seem interesting include the zippered hems (very strange !) , inverted knee pockets ! The collection seems to reinterpret the DIESEL signature looks and do not seem to have any of the outstanding elements that used to signify the brand . The images below speak for themselves.

  • Project F.L.X By Levis

    Project F.L.X By Levis

Just recently we had G-Star released their ‘Most Sustainable Jeans’ collection and we now have Levi Strauss catching up the sustainable bandwagon and has come out with Project F.L.X – which they claim is the most sustainably washed denim.

Levi Strauss & Co. introduces Project F.L.X. (future-led execution), a new operating model that brings denim finishing into the digital era. By digitizing denim finish design and development, the company is enabling a more responsive and sustainable supply chain at an unparalleled scale. Project F.L.X. radically reduces time to market and eliminates thousands of chemical formulations from jeans finishing. Through Project F.L.X., the company is claiming is that they are achieving the ultimate balance of agility and sustainability, while upholding their standards of craftsmanship, quality and authenticity. LS&Co. has begun piloting Project F.L.X. with select vendors and retail partners and will roll it out across its supply chain in a phased approach over the next two years. The rollout of this new digital platform will be phased over time, with a goal of being fully scaled in 2020.

    HOW ITS STARTED

Project F.L.X. was built in-house at LS&Co.’s Eureka Innovation Lab by a team of designers, developers, chemists and engineers passionate about revolutionizing the apparel industry to better meet consumer needs while also doing right by the planet and the people who work in the apparel supply chain. A number of LS&Co. team members were retrained and reskilled in software development and laser operations. Retraining will be a key tenet as this new model rolls out globally. To help unlock the benefits of more sophisticated laser technology, LS&Co. turned to long-standing partner Jeanologia, a leader in eco-efficient solutions for fabric and garment finishing. Since 1993, Jeanologia operated with the ambition of advancing sustainable apparel manufacturing by delivering disruptive technologies, including ozone, laser and e-flow finishing systems. The company’s like-minded focus on scalability was essential to supporting LS&Co.’s end-to-end, transformative vision.

“We believe it is possible to be both agile and sustainable without compromising the authenticity our consumers expect from us,” said Chip Bergh, president and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co.

    clip_image002

    clip_image004

Four Major Developments Under Project F.L.X. :

    1. Replace manual techniques and automate the time-consuming, labor-intensive and chemical-reliant process of hand-finishing: For more than 30 years, the apparel industry has used hand-finishing to accentuate worn, faded design elements on denim. By using lasers in new ways, finishing time is cut dramatically – from two to three pairs per hour to 90 seconds per garment, followed by a final wash cycle.

    2. Create “photo-real” finished garments digitally: By digitizing the finish design and development process, LS&Co. designers can now create finishes and final garments with a revolutionary new imaging tool. Built by LS&Co., this advanced imaging capability cuts finishing design and development time in half (from months to weeks and sometimes days) and is so accurate the digital files can be sent directly to the vendor and quickly scaled to mass manufacturing.

    3. Take advantage of on-demand and even hyper-local production capabilities: By delaying decisions on final products until much later in the process, LS&Co. can radically reduce its lead times from more than six months to as fast as weeks or days in some cases. This is made possible by staging garments that await their on-demand finish order closer to the market.

    4. Eliminate thousands of chemical formulations from its supply chain: LS&Co. plans to reduce the total number of chemical formulations used in its finishing process from thousands to a few dozen. This is a major step forward in the company’s commitment to achieving zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020 and furthers its goal of pioneering more sustainable apparel.

“With this new model, we can deliver the authentic and iconic products we’re known for in an incredibly responsive and responsible way,” said Liz O’Neill, senior vice president and chief supply chain officer for Levi Strauss & Co. “The advanced imaging capability is a game-changer for us, and something that has eluded our industry for years.”

“One of the biggest challenges we face as an industry is ensuring we have the right products at the right time as well as the ability to respond to our customers’ evolving needs with speed,” said Paige Thomas, Executive Vice President and General Merchandise Manager for Men’s and Kid’s at Nordstrom Inc. “The team at Levi’s is working towards this challenge by contributing to the future of the apparel industry as one that’s both agile and uncompromising on quality, while improving sustainability. We’re excited to be part of it.”

    clip_image011

When we quickly compare the G-Star RFTPi jeans and the Levi’s F.L.X jeans, we find that there are differences among them in terms of scope of sustainability. While the G-Star jeans covers even the cotton aspect and the dyeing of the fabric and even covering the accessories, Levi’s jeans gets its sustainability score from the processes used in jeans finishing where they use the modern laser and other methods to achieve zero chemical and very less water usage . But our vote would go to G-Star as their scope seems wider and they have tried to cover the major inputs into the jeans rather than only covering the jeans finishing part.

    Women Leading The Growth

Levi’s is experiencing a straight 10th quarter growth in women denim sales. This is a very good sign specially seen in context of ‘Athleisure’ trend chipping off the sails of many a retailer. However, Levi’s was wise enough not to board the ‘Athleisure’ bandwagon and focused on what they did best. Only they mae their denim products more adaptable , more flexible , more stretch for the new demands from the consumers. The growth for Levi’s seems to be hinged on two main terms : ‘Women’ and ‘ Overseas’ .

Chip Bergh, CEO , was expectedly ecstatic and said.

“Our growth and momentum accelerated in the fourth quarter, capping the strongest revenue year the company has had in more than a decade,” chief executive and president Chip Bergh said. “Our strategies are working and the investments that we’ve made to diversify our business over the past few years are paying off, best demonstrated by the strength of the Levi’s brand globally.”
