  • Denim Search Trends- 2012

Is it possible to find out about what consumers are looking for and from where when it comes to any product category if we sift through the searches occuring on Google ?

    The answer is ‘Yes” !!

Google is has become the default repository of the likings  and desires of mankind . It is so easy for Google to tell , say – which city in the world is aspiring for a particular product or service or even fantasy or which country in the world has a higher % of mathematics orientation and similar  unlimited other parameters.

Lets see whats happening on the denim scene.

We did some comparisons for searches. We took four search terms :

    • Soft Jeans
    • Color Jeans
    • Coated Jeans
    • Stretch Denim

The trends compared these all four searches to find their Relative importance. It means that how these terms were searched relative to each other in the last 12 months. Lets see the result

color jeans, denim , soft jeans

The results are interesting. The ‘Color Jeans’ is a strong trend if we compare these searches. Stretch denim is of course always as it is becoming a default fabric for many styles and other popular searches are soft jeans and Coated Jeans.

But which are the top countries from where people are  looking for these kind of jeans the most  ? Lets see

    Color Jeans

    Coated Jeans
    image

So we can see that for Color Jeans  USA , Brazil and Canada are the markets where consumers are looking keenly for these products.  Similarly for Soft Jeans and Coated Jeans there are UK and US at top places.
So does it mean that if a retailer is selling ‘Color Jeans’ in US Brazil or Canada and which has stretch and is quite soft , will it do well ?
Well depending on many other factors like pricing and positioning, it can be generally said – YES this would be a good biz !

Is it also possible to find out , say , which color of jeans could be most popular ?
It looks like RED COLOR is among the search terms getting most popular .

  • Denim Colors: The Next Big Fashion Trend? – Part 2

This is the second part of guest article by Harry Mercer. The first one can be seen here..

color denim As mentioned in the first part, producing colors on denim machinery, especially Indigo dyeing equipment has usually resulted in failure to achieve denim colors that are without variation. Sulfur dyeing on Indigo machinery typically results in 10 or more different shades per dye lot, which is true of sulfur bottoming, sulfur topping and sulfur blacks. Other colors are even more sensitive to chemical and machine conditions.

The options for overcoming these problems and experiencing success in the market are:
    1) To invest in yarn dyeing machinery with an additional set of drying cylinders and a steamer which permits precise dyeing control for all cotton dyes or
    2) Establish a research effort internally in which the actual conditions of the Indigo machine are duplicated in the laboratory so that dyeing formulations and methods can accurately predict results on the yarn during production.

The options for producing denim colors as far as dyes are concerned are:

Sulfur dyes: These are low–cost and can be applied on Indigo machinery, fabric dyeing machinery, jiggers, pad-batch and garment dyeing machinery with properly designed methods. Sulfurs are highly versatile in application methods including space dyeing, printing, spray dyeing etc. Sulfurs have an appearance that is more natural than reactives or directs, having a softer appearance and allowing versatile wash down effects in laundering.

Vat dyes: These are are more costly, but they result in bright, highly colorfast shades. There are a few vat dyes that can be mixed with Indigo for casting, however pure vat colors are best applied on denim with specially-designed rope ranges, like the Spectrum, with an additional set of drying cylinders, steamer and small pad boxes for dye-pad, dry, chem-pad, steam methods.

Direct dyes: These are currently being applied in garment dyeing of jeans in light colors for the higher fashion market. Direct dyes can also be used for tinting denim fabrics by adding to finishing formulas.

Reactives: These are very expensive to use. They are often used in garment dyeing, because they do not require an understanding of dye chemistry. There have been attempts to apply on indigo machinery, but control of dyeing is nearly impossible because of the large dye boxes on most indigo equipment, much of the dye being hydrolyzed before it can penetrate the cotton. Again, as with vat dyes, reactives should be applied in a small box, then dried, chem-padded and steamed. The only practical alternative for most denim companies is to apply reactives in sizing with special procedures.

Affinity Factors: Key to controlling sulfur dyeing

Sulfurs are a type of vat dye like Indigo, both of which present control problems on Indigo machinery. Vat dyes like sulfurs are known as “substantive dyes” which means that they are absorbed by cotton at a faster rate than water. How much faster a substantive dye is absorbed by water is known as the “Affinity Factor”.

The affinity factor changes depending on the chemical nature of the sulfur dye, the concentration of each dye and the temperature of dyeing. For example, a sulfur black applied in continuous dyeing at a temperature of 90C and a concentration of 180 g/L will have an affinity factor of 2, which is very low. This means that the dye is absorbed twice as fast as water, so in order to maintain a concentration of 180 g/L in the box for a gravity feed, the concentration in the feeding tank should be about 360 g/L. If you were to use 30 g/L for a sulfur bottom at 90 C, the affinity factor would be perhaps 20. This means that at 90C, the dye is absorbed about 20 times faster than water, which makes dyeing control impossible and is why sulfur bottoms are usually inconsistent and light. Sulfur bottoms are a form of sulfur color and in order to establish dyeing control of any color, the affinity factor must be reduced by using lower temperatures. It is well-known that a 10C increase in temperature results in a doubling of reaction rates, so the solution is to dye at the lowest temperature possible. Commonly-used reducing agents like sodium sulphide and dextrose require temperatures around 90 C, therefore these should be replaced by reducers that allow dyeing at no more than 60C for any sulfur color other than black.

There is also a widespread problem with the quality of sulfur dyes in the market. Liquid sulfur dyes often have a pH of 14, which results in variation even with blacks as well as poor washfastness, poor rubbing- fastness and large amounts of dye waste during wash cycles. Sulfur dyeing is best at pH 11. Also for continuous dyeing, the reduction potential is critical for consistency and color-fastness. The higher the reduction potential of the dye and of the dye application, the better the results. Sulfur liquids with the highest reduction potential, around -750 mV offer the best continuous dyeing control, while dyeing at very low millivolts (-585) as with sodium sulphide result in very poor quality dyeings.

    A note by Harry Mercer:
I have been involved in producing successful denim colors for the fashion markets for over 20 years. Until recently, activity in this area has been limited because of technical difficulties in applying colors on denim equipment, however interest in denim colors has become explosive recently. I have collected many of the denim colors available internationally and can refer garment producers to the leading fabric suppliers. I also have evaluated the dye and chemical suppliers with the best products and technical service for yarn, fabric and garment dyeing that I will be happy to refer interested parties to.

  • Denim Colors: The Next Big Fashion Trend?

This is a guest post by Harry Mercer.

For denim executives that are trying to anticipate the next big fashion trend, there are clear indications of what that trend will be. The indications are that denim in a wide range of colors is emerging as the most promising path to significantly improved denim business by 2013. These are other than the pure Indigo blue, sulfur bottoms, sulfur tops and black shades that dominate the denim market. The availability of denim colors in the world market is presently very small because only a very few denim companies have overcome the technical challenges of dyeing colors on standard denim equipment. These problems along with the route to success in producing colors will be explained in following article.

Yarn Dyed Color Denim Fabric - Orta

The technical aspects of controlling colors on Indigo machinery consist of:

    1) Understanding affinity factors( the velocity of dye particles) of indigo and sulfur dyeing

    2) Control of reduction potential(millivolts) and alkalinity(pH) of indigo and sulfur dye

3)Dye box volumes( larger boxes are better for Indigo, smaller are better for sulfurs)

    4) Control of wet pick-up where dyes are applied to dry cotton and the concept of “liquor exchange” where dye is applied to wet cotton

    5) Effective washing for maintaining color consistency

    6) Control of oxidation, especially with sulfur dyes to avoid strength loss with blacks and the extreme color variation with colors other than black. These will be addressed in detail in the following article.

These color denims are appearing in increasing volumes in higher-fashion retail stores such as Dillards in the U.S. as well as in Europe and Japan. These include yarn-dyed denims with the white weft preserved and garment dyes which can be produced with sulfur dyes, reactives, directs or pigments. One constant in yarns dyed by Indigo machinery is that there will be an undyed, white center in the yarns regardless of which class of dye or dyeing method is used. The reserved, undyed cotton in the center of the yarns is responsible for the unique brightness of denim garments. Light is reflected from the dyed fibers on the outside of the yarns, but also from the white fibers in the center which results in a special brightness that has been described as “blooming”.

Sulfur dyed garments seem to have greater appeal because of the more natural looking “earth tones” that are generated. Reactives have a more intense appearance because of the higher chroma, but are more expensive and are perceived as being artificial. Direct dyes are the lowest cost to use and there are pink and light greens that have penetrated the market, but present colorfastness problems in dark shades. Pigments are relatively easy to apply and since they are a surface coloration, can produce a distressed look, but also present colorfastness problems in darker shades and have a harsher feel than dyed garments. Sulfur colors offer easy application, are very low cost and can produce a wide range of colors that imitate colors in nature which have a more durable appeal in the higher-fashion markets. The basic procedure for producing sulfur dyes is to take “any organic compound with color and react it with sulfur”, so any naturally occurring material can be used to produce sulfur dyes. When sulfur dyes were introduced in the 1870’s, the first colors were brown dyes produced from sawdust, animal blood and horse manure reacted with sulfurs. More sophisticated methods since then have resulted in a full palette of colors with sulfur dyes.

The expression “sulfur colors” refers to colors like browns, greens, yellow, violets, greys, pinks and oranges, colors that will stand out in stores and catch the attention of retail consumers that are ready for something fresh to wear, but are in the unique denim fabric constructions.

Yarn Dyed Color Denim Fabric - Orta

The presence of white weft-yarns behind the colored weft yarns makes for a brighter, cleaner appearance and because the weft yarns have not been affected by dyes or chemicals, the feel of natural cotton against the skin is one of the important reasons for the appeal of denim.

Yarn Dyed Color Denim Fabric - Orta

Denim colors first became a huge success in the fashion denim area about 20 years ago, when U.S. companies invested in research programs to solve the mysteries of the physical chemistry involved in continuous dyeing on Indigo machinery, which none of the dye suppliers was able to solve. A serious effort is required which involves a basic understanding of color science, the chemistry of dyeing, especially the selection of reducing agents and special buffers to maintain stability in the large dye boxes of Indigo machinery, but the profit margins to be realized will make the effort financially worthwhile, especially for smaller, more flexible and technically capable denim companies.

The business cycle in fashion has always demonstrated that the fabric supplier who enters the market first with an entirely new product gains the greatest share of the profits form product development. Those who try to catch up and wait to follow the leaders will continue to struggle.

  • Denim For Ipad /Iphone?

Lets  start counting the products where denim is being used as a basic input or as an additive providing an enhancement value :

Bottoms and Tops including jeans , jackets , shirts etc
    Upholstery
    Car seat covers
    Ladies fashion dresses
    Sarees for Indian women
Burqahs and other dresses for muslims
    Towels !
    Curtains..
    Pet clothes
    Helmets

    The list is endless……………………

So if there is one more addition to this list , it should not be surprising at all. Applying denim fabric to accentuate the value of an ipad or an iphone is like bringing two iconic products together.
When Cone selvedge denim is lined with Merino wool to make sleeves for Ipad /Iphones, the product is expected to be still better. Its interesting to see these new applications for denim – but unforunately we will not be able to see the wash down effects on these products..  They will, as they say , age gracefully !

Though  interesting as a product , the denim mills are not going to get a huge advantage in terms of meters sold …But its good to see another place product category being invaded by denim !

  • Vicunha Spring/Summer 2013 Denim Forecast

vicunha denimHaving recently acquired a denim manufacturing facility in Argentina, and with denim  production of about 140 million mtrs pa, the Brazilian company Vicunha is now the second largest denim fabric company in the world. With such a huge production to sell , the company is still very nimble and responsive to market needs for quick productions . The company explains how it has to cater to produce fabrics to cater to three different seasons at the same time:

“Imagine being a denim or flat-woven MadridWhitelightNovoXavea_MG_0115 manufacturer having to deliver large quantities to such hyper-fashion brands as COS, H&M, Massimo Dutti and Zara, on demand “today” i.e. in the current season. Imagine delivering to companies that can often only decide in November what will be under the Christmas tree in December. Imagine already now having to satisfy highest trend expectations of such global players as Calvin Klein, DKNY, Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger for “tomorrow”, i.e. the coming season. And also imagine offering these labels and hot denim brands such as Diesel and Replay the latest future styles for “the day after tomorrow”, i.e. the next but one season. This means covering three seasons at a time and providing fast and reliable large scale deliveries and optimum customer service plus technical support for a very sensitive market that reacts like a seismograph to change.”

    Forecast :Spring / Summer 2013

     Vicunha_Caprice_Solara_SS13_MG_0313 Vicunha_Serano_Orwell_SS13_MG_0236

Here is a brief forecast from the company for the Spring/Summer 2013 season

    • “Plurality” is the catchphrase for the Spring/Summer 2013 season. Denims have to be equally stylish of every shade, and in the three main kinds of washes: Dark, including the authentic “rinse-wash”; middle, with the casual “used-wash”; and light, with “bleach wash,” for a naturally-faded favorite jeans look.
    • Despite all the choices, “sky blue” and “pure indigo” are the clear front-runners and are considered strong favorites this season.
    • Appearance and texture are key: high density denims
come out on top with their clean look and soft, comfortable fit, which is of increasing importance in the men’s range.
    • Lightweight fabrics such as cotton with Tencel and
      linen
are also highlights for jeans, currently in fashion for women’s jumpsuits, overalls and skirts. Generally, there is a strong trend towards fine, combed threads. Whether cambric or 2×1 ribs – soft, relaxed fit is key.
    • Super-stretch remains at the forefront, not only for fashionable slim fits, but also to ensure authentic design and wearability. Finely combed threads, soft threads,
      and polyamide threads ensure softness.
    •  Preferred colors: distressed light blue and beige!

    Sustainability Mantra

At the beginning of the year, VICUNHA became the very first Brazilian company to join the BETTER COTTON INITIATIVE. Vicunha’s first priority is the sustainable, clean production of cotton. As a pioneering member of the BETTER COTTON INITIATIVE in the Brazilian market, their main priorities are sustainable, clean cotton production, environmental protection and social responsibility.

“Pricing policy is important, but not at the expense of environmental and social responsibility,” commented Thomas Dislich, CEO of VICUNHA Europe, on membership in the BCI.

The denim giant is also setting standards within the company for social standards, workplace security and environmental protection. Alongside membership in the BCI, the company has permanently invested in recycling. Polyester is produced from recycled plastic bottles and biomass instead of oils or fossil fuels; organic materials such as cashew nut shells and raw sugar pulp are used in the production processes. As a result, the company reduced their monthly carbon dioxide emissions by about 10,000 tons.

    Speed to Deliver Offensive

The company is not wanting in its ability to serve different markets of the world with a speedy delivery service that ensures that clients can respond to the latest fashion changes. Vicunha has currently a market break up as :

    Brazil 75%
    Argentina 10%
    Other America 10%
    Europe 5%
It has a large warehouse in Europe to serve its clients with a quick delivery service and now the company has set its sight on the growing denim apparel region of South Asia – Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India. The company just announced setting up of a 500,000 mtrs warehouse at Sri Lanka which will be able to deliver fabrics within 7 days of order to this region.  Thomas Dislich says :

“This strategic and very advantageous positioning makes us very flexible for the Asian market, especially for Bangladesh, one of the main production locations for Western brands and verticals. Goods can be delivered by ship less than seven days after they are ordered,” says Thomas Dislich.

For the upcoming Denim by Première Vision in Paris, from November 30th to December 1st, 2011, the Brazilian denim giant shows their “lifestyle” colors with a new stand concept, as at the previous fair. The stand’s design and atmosphere embraces the season’s moods. For more details ,contact Vicunha Europe at this email address

  • Boot Cut Vs Skinny Jeans : Which Style Is More Popular ?

Skinny Jeans are supposed to be the most popular style in women’s jeans currently and they are also catching up in the men’s style with a lot of men attracted to this style.
Ideally the jeans sold by /through  any large retailer (offline or online )  or through online auction should have the largest % of sales in the Skinny styles .. But this assumption is belied when we look at the sales made on  Ebay during  the period August 2010 to July 2011 ..
Its the BOOT CUT style that takes the cake !

So , out of about 3 million pairs of jeans sold through Ebay during July 2010 to August 2011, about 793,000 pairs of jeans ie about 28% of jeans were in boot cut style .  The straight leg jeans sold were about 215,000 and the Skinny came at the third number at about 214,000 jeans.  See the list of different jeans sold in different quantities :

    image

    image

Does this mean that Boot Cut jeans are more popular than the Skinny Jeans???
We really cannot say so .. If we look at Google trends on searches related to Boot cut jeans Vs Skinny Jeans , we will find a different story. The skinny jeans as a search item far exceeds in the number of searches as compared to Boot cut jeans.. And we know that Google searches do reflect the tendencies of consumers to search for the products they want .. Lets have a look at the chart below :

    image

The Google trend chart for the period 2004 to 2011 shows the searches made for :
    Boot Cut Jeans
    Skinny Jeans
    Jeggings

As we can see from this chart, the search for skinny jeans has been dominating since the 2005 when skinny jeans started to become popular . It kept on increasing in popularity though we see some dip in 2010 and 2011. However, if we look at the Boot Cut Jeans searches, we will find that they have been almost flat since 2005  and they seem far behind in popularity compared to Skinny Jeans..
Jeggings trend is interesting – The word JEGGINGS was recently coined in around 2009 and we can see searches related to Jeggings rise from a few to a huge number which crosses that of Skinny in mid of 2010.. Jeggings indeed started as a trend in 2009 and was hugely popular in mid 2010 and still continues to be popular (point D) . It seems to be more popular than Boot Cut..
However, we need to remember that consumers sometimes search more for products that they do not know and hence searches for Jeggings suddenly peaked in 2010 . Whereas products like Boot Cut are taken as regular products and probably not searched so much.
Whatever said and done , it can be concluded that high of Boot Cut jeans may indicate a growing trend to buy these jeans but Skinny Jeans cannot be just wished away!. It is not going anywhere at least for some time.
