  • Latest Emerging Denim Trends – Google Helps

    We all know how to use Google search to find various information that we are looking for. Google has now become a way of life and it is increasingly becoming so by adding new services to their portfolio of existing services.

    Google Insights provides information on recent searches related to your keyword . This is a great way to see which areas of your topic are becoming more popular with searchers. So Ilets see how it can help us to find ‘Denim Trends’

    Look at the chart below . It shows the searches related to ‘Denim’ in last 90 days which have experienced the highest growth. Since this is a dynamically embedded chart, it will keep on updating automatically and show the latest popular searches related to denim. Since these results may include any kind of search related to denim , we need to sort out the ‘Trends’ out of the results.
    As on the date of writing this post,  we can see that  ‘Lee National Day’ and ‘National Denim Day’ are popular searches currently. However, if we look further , we will find that ‘ Denim Leggings’ is a very popular search term which clearly shows that it is of increasing interest . We had also already mentioned in a previous post that Denim Leggings IS a cool denim trend.

    Another interesting search term coming up in popularity is ‘Double Denim’ . Though double denim is considered anathema by most fashionistas around the world, it seems to be catching up a bit. In the coming weeks, as we observe this chart, we can see the shifting position of various search tersm in relation to one another – so bookmark this page and check again . My feeling is that ‘Denim Legging’ would come up to the top of the list in a few weeks..

  • Denim leggings – Big Premium Denim Trend for Fall/Winter 2009 ?

    denim leggings Denim leggings (Jeggings, as they are often known as )seem to have exploded on the scene for a last couple of months. On the one hand, some trend analysts were predicting a withering away of the skinny jeans trend and now we are looking at an emaciated version of the Skinny Jeans as the next big trend in Denim. At the LA Kingpins show in August , Denim leggings alongwith Vintage styles topped the list of Fall Trends for Premium Denim.

    Most  fashionable celebrities have been spotted wearing the new fall trend-denim leggings.Denim leggings have been seen on celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian. There is no doubt that  they will be the hot trend for this  fall and winter and carry on for next couple of seasons.

    The idea of leggings that look like jeans may seem a little strange at first but it’s actually a genius way of getting that skinny jean look without crushing your inner organs.

    How are Denim Leggings  different from Skinny Jeans?

    Well here goes..

    1. Denim leggings hug the body much more tightly than the skinny jeans.
    2. Denim Leggings are made up of materials which have a higher percentage of lycra/spandex in them as compared to skinny jeans.
    3. Many non-denim fabrics with pseudo denim looks can pass off as Denim Leggings whereas Skinny Jeans will Always be denim only.
    4. Denim leggings generally do not have a front zipper .
    5. Denim leggings are supposed to give a much more comfortable feel due to the material used and allow much more body movements as compared to Skinny Jeans.
    6. Denim leggings generally avoid pockets on the top.
    7. The stretch material of Denim Leggings should fit snuggly on top of boots or inside of boots depending on your preference.
    8. Denim leggings are tight around the legs but have a nice comfy stretch top- so no more muffin tops!.
    9. Not everyone can carry off a Skinny Jeans. This is much more applicable in case of Denim Leggings and some ladies may need to put up tunics and dresses  to cover unpleasant bulges highlighted by the leggings.
    10. Wearing Denim Leggings as normal jeans or pants would normally be considered immodest..

  • Women’s Jeans – 75th Anniversary. Ironical repeat of Denim Trend..

    Its difficult to believe that first women’s jeans were introduced 61 years after the men had been wearing them ! . Levi’s had introduced the first men’ jeans – mainly meant for working men- in 1873 . In the Fall of 1934 , it decided to introduce the Lady’s Levi’s Jeans and forever changed the course of women fashion.

    Levi’s would have never thought that about 75 years after the introduction of women’s jeans, the denim fits, finishes  and fabric innovations would be driven by women’s needs and that the sales of women’s jeans would surpass that of men’s (in fact it was done in 2000)!  . Women’s jeanswear are currently leading the denim trends each season and it is difficult to imagine denim seasons without women’s jeans.

    Another irony in this 75th year is the popularity of the Boyfriend Jeans  and Skinny Jeans trend . Despite the latest high finishing techniques for women’s jeans , today’s most popular styles – The Boyfriend and Skinny Jeans – trace their ancestory to the earliest jeans developed by Levi’s. In the early 1900s, when women had no options available for them , they used to wear the men’s jeans and the Boyfriend Jeans was a ‘Fashion by compulsion’ or due to ‘Lack of choice’.

    The evolution of women`s jeans:

    
* Pre-1934: Women in the West began wearing their husbands` or brothers` Levi`s
501 jeans.
* 1934: The first pair of women`s jeans, Lady Levi`s, are created. Assigned lot
number 701 to distinguish them from men`s jeans (Lot 501), the original pairs
were aimed at women working on ranches and sold in several Western states. 
* 1930s and 1940s: Sales of women`s jeans begin to take off due to the growing
popularity of dude ranches. High-end department stores Best & Co. and H.
Kauffman & Sons Saddlery Company carried Levi`s jeans to meet this new demand.
Women`s jeans also switched from button-fly to zipper. 
* 1960s: Amid a tumultuous cultural revolution, denim becomes a staple in
women`s wardrobes. Jeans become a icon of rebellion that`s adopted by both men
and women. 
    * 1970s: Levi`s women`s jeans range offers a variety fashion fits, including the
"full" and "straight" leg jeans, and the "jean cuffs." Flares and bell-bottoms
also become popular styles. Levi`s jeans for women are introduced for the first
time overseas. 
* 1980s: The Levi`s brand introduces the famous 501 jeans for women in 1981. The
brand introduces stonewashing to women`s jeans just two years later in 1983. 
* 2002: The premium denim trend takes off and Brands like 7 For All Mankind, True Religion,
    J Brand become popular with celebrities  and a wave of premium denim fashion kicks in. Hundreds
    new denim brands come on the scene.
    *2009: Trends like Boyfriend Jeans, Skinny Jeans , High Waisted Jeans become popular.
    Denim leggings is another trend which is picking up..

  • Bread & Butter Berlin Jeans Fair July 2009– A Review

    The  BBB Jeans fair (July 2009) was a great success regarding the number of visitors coming from all parts of the world.

    But,the question is still of it was a fair for designers and photographers are where there so many buyers !!.

    The layout of the stands were excellent made and well organised and generally many colours could be seen!!!!

    Here is a brief note on some of the denim brands that were present there.

     

    LEE:

    -garments with holes ,,,,,, no pressing

    -unwashed

    -old and vintage look

    -bigger back pockets!!!! And low positioning

    -loose fit

    -back is the bib overall

     

    101 CONCEPT:

    -Ring/Ring fabrics , The fabrics were japanese – from Kurabo!!

    -Dark and medium washed

     

    WRANGLER:

    -Labels are bigger and colour full

    -Garments are more even,,,,, dark and medium washed (14OZ)

    -No pressing just blowing

    -Very few with dirty wash look

    LEVI’S

    -Black denim for 501——-normal washes !!!!dark/medium/bleached

    -Bleached with holes!!!!

    -Loose fit

    -Unwashed. I have the impression that Levi’s is moving away from the extreme washes.

    -many colours and coarse stitching on the back pockets and embroidery

    Similar  trends I found in brands – COLLIN’S and MAVI jeans (turkey)

    garments.

    Only brands made by ADRIANO GOLDSCHMIED you find the extreme washes!!!

    Denim Fabric Trends Noticed:

    1. I have the impression that the most manufactures put more ATTENTION again to the fabric for sure 14OZ!!!
    2. The flamed denim is still in collection (inherent to ring yarns)
    3. Also crosshatch fabrics (R/R) more expensive fabrics are used more
    4. DEEP DYEING and PURE indigo
    5. Shrink to Fit Fabric is becoming HOT. It is weft stretch denim which is not sanforized and has a residual shrinkage of 15% in weft and 15% in warp.Elasticity is about 20-30% . Such fabric was made in the Eighties…

    A Note On TRC – (Denim Mill From Italy)

    TRC PROPOSED The  Selvedge Denim…

    1. Woven on the old Picanol president loom( anno 70 _80)
    2. Shuttle loom (unifill) width of fabric 75 cm
    3. Speed of loom :15O picks/min VERY SLOW

    Same concept was noticed at PH7 -Japanese brand– handcrafted…

    CONCLUSION

    Everyone was a little bit nervous for the further evolution and result AND hoping that after TWO years the economy should improve!!

    BUT now they all should try to overcome the 2 difficult years!! HOW ??

    Note for Denim Companies :

    1. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to present the Fabric in LEG form and washed very well( different washes).
    2. Back pocket on the leg to see the contrast

    This makes the fabric more attractive FOR PRESENTATION.

    Most Visible Styles In the Video

    1. Boyfriend Jeans – As expected every brand worth its salt is coming out with Boyfriend Jeans and Shorts.
    2. Skinny Jeans – Still refuses to die out and keeps emerging in new forms like ‘Slouchy Skinny’  which is a cross between Skinny and Boyfriend styles.
    3. Straight Denim is still going strong.

    Ripped, Torned , Acid washed and Frayed are the wash effects/finishes that are most suggested.  In fact we are probably seeing more of Ripped effects in various brands this year than they were last year.

    And for the sophisticated,  White Denim  (clean/ripped) is recommended for wearing in day or night.

  • Denim or Jeans ! What are people searching? And from where ?

    Google trends is a good place to know what people around the world are searching for and one can also compare different terms for search and get a single graph to analyze which search terms are more popular. Though one does not get the absolute number of searches made on a search query, but one can get the relative search data for different queries.

    I found it interesting to compare the search terms – ‘Denim’ and ‘Jeans’ for the year 2008. As expected the term ‘Jeans’ is much more popular – almost 8 times more popular ! . Thus the number of searches made worldwide for ‘Jeans’ is eight times more than that of ‘ Denim’. Also the most interesting to note here is that  Australia as a country tops the search queries for ‘Jeans’and close behind is ‘ USA’. I did’nt know that Australians were so fond of ‘ Jeans’. However, as a city, ‘New York’ and other American cities stand first in search volumes .

  • Denim trend – Boyfriend Jeans

    This trend started late last year when some celebrities like Katie Holmes started to put on the jeans of their boyfriend (Tom Cruise). Others like Victoria Beckham were not to be left behind and followed up by wearing the jeans of their own boyfriends/hubbies.

    The trend does not necessarily mean that girls should wear the jeans of their boyfriends . But the jeans have some characteristics which set them apart from other jeans like Skinny,Wide legged etc.

    1. The jeans are loose and baggy – but not ill fitting.
    2.They are ususally distressed but not necessarily so.
    3.They are rolled up at the helms so that the feet are visible .
    4.Usually worn with fancy high heeled sandals .
    5. The jeans are usually worn by young girls.

  • Acid washed denim – trend supported by Ashley Tisdale, Rihanna & other celebrities

    We all remember the Acid Washed jeans from the 80s ( the older ones among us !) . We remember the craze that followed the jeans as well the total withdrawal of the trend.

    It seems that acid washed jeans in surfacing on the lower half of a number of celebrities signalling the that the trend may catch up this year.

  • ‘Paca Blue Jeans’ a new kind of denim from Alpaca fiber

    Denim has always been greedily targeted by manufacturers/producers of fibres other than cotton simply for the reason that it is the highest selling clothing item in the world. There have been experiments to make denim from wool,silk,tencel and other fibres and each of them has had limited amount of success. We now have a new fibre seeking to enter the world of denim – The Alpaca Fiber .

    The fiber comes from a camelid (whatever it means!) reared at and  is used for making knitted and woven items, much as sheep’s wool is. These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles and ponchos in South America, and sweaters, socks, coats and bedding in other parts of the world. The fiber comes in more than 52 natural colors.

    The American Alpaca Federation has taken up the task of promoting this fibre and launched the denims made from Alpaca fibre at ‘Denim by Premier Vision‘. The denim was made in cooperation with the the denim group GFM Telas Parras The reviews have been encouraging and the federation seems to have evinced interest from a number of buyers including retailers like Gap.

    The denim fabric made from Alpaca Fiber has some unique qualities and is very soft and has warmth,strenght  and is wrinkle free. While similar to sheep’s wool in that it is a natural fiber, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no  lanolin which makes it hypoallergenic and wrinkle free. However, it is somewhat weaker and coarser than most wool fibers making it stand out while dying. Dyeing may thus be an issue with this fibre. But there is no doubt that the hand feel of denim made from this fibre would be superior to that made from wool or tencel.

    But like all other natural (animal based ) fibres, the major limitaion comes with the cost .Alpaca fibers fall in the same league as the the fibre tops cost in the range of USD 10-USD 24 per kg and even with a usage of 20% mix, it would add substantial cost to the fabric and garment . It remains to be seen whether the eco friendliness, handfeel and performance of the fabric made from this fiber can outweigh the costs or not.

    Is there a way to search for the latest on Denim Trends? Searching Google news might be one option and searching a host of other denim sites may be another option. But I like to look at search for latest in denim from the denim search engine which searches all these sites at one go. Here are some links that I would like to share :

    a)Denim trends in last one year : this link gives the search results for the last one year related to denim trends.
    Use the drop down option at the top to see results for last month or day etc.
    b)What kind of jeans denim forums and denim blogs are talking about lately?
    c)What are the latest styles of jeans of existing brands and some new brands which have come up in last one month..

    White denim jeans seem to have been taken up by almost all well known brands and most of them have postioned it as a premium product.The reason is that today’s fashion fore-minded consumer is practically indoors and in climate-controlled environments so much that there’s less of an urge for bulky clothing that can only be worn during wintry months. This increases the acceptance of white denim as not only a summer product . Apart from it , white denim is very versatile and can have a fresh summer appearance or a very rich autumn appearance.

  • Search Denim jobs,brands,buyers,blog and forum posts etc

    What do you do when :

    a)You need to find about Denim brands or
    b)You need to find Denim buyers to sell your fabric and garments or
    c)You need to study about the Trends in Denim or
    d)You need a job related to Denim in(say) New York or Delhi or
    e)You have any other denim related queries..
    f)You need to buy a particular style of a jeans brand but do not know where to buy from.

    Well, for me, I used to go to Google and hope to find some answer. Or I would to visit some denim forums or blogs and try to search them individually. By the time I would find any answer, I would be totally exhausted and probably give up many times..

    As I earlier mentioned, it seems to be much easier to SEARCH ANYTHING ON DENIM ..
    Just visit the at Denim Search Engine . I use it regularly for searching various denim related articles and I thought it might come in handy to others as well..This engine SEARCHES ONLY DENIM RELATED WEBPAGES

    How do I use this Search Engine ?

    a)To find which Denim Brands(well known) has created Color Jeans,I would just
    make a search ‘Color’ and click on ‘DENIM BRANDS’ label in the search results
    and I would know that the brands that have come out with color denims.

    b)If I need to find a job in New York for a denim designer, I would just search ‘NewYork Designer’ and in the search result, I would CLICK on ‘DENIM JOBS’ label and instantly get this list of denim jobs in USA.
    c)Buyers –Since nobody employed me 🙂 , I decided to export some denims to USA and searched ‘USA’ and in the search results, I clicked on ‘DENIM BUYERS’ and I found a long list of buyers (on various sites) who had current enquiries on denim.
    d)Recent articles : I sometimes need to know what kind of posts people are making about various brand names. But it is difficult to find in reverse order – the date of posts . Now, suppose in this engine, I search for ‘DVB’..In the search results, I click on ‘RECENT4) and I get the latest posts related to DVB brand. It kind of enables one to keep track of what people are saying about your brand.Also I can check out if some top news sites have made a mention regarding DVB and I click on the label ‘TOP NEWS SITES’ and I find that Reuters had a news item on them recently.
    e)Denim Blogs : It is interesting to search any term and then click on ‘DENIM BLOGS’ label in the search results. It gives an idea what top denim bloggers (including myself 🙂 ) think about that search term..No need now to search all these different blogs to find any relevant articles.

    Now the Denim Search Engine Search box is available right here on our site. On the right panel, you willl see the search box . Just make any search on Denim and use the Labels like ‘Denim Blogs’, ‘Buy Jeans’ etc to refine the results.
