The  initiative by Denim Club India brings up a two day comprehensive event, which will include an international denim conference concurrent to a business exhibition, and first-ever denim excellence awards. InDIGO 2012 is being organized with the objective of helping meet the needs of the fast-growing denim  industry and a rapidly evolving and expanding denim-wear market, in Asian Subcontinent, and enabling stakeholders in the entire denim eco-system in converging on a single platform for networking, exchange of ideas, sharing of current experiences, showcase latest innovations, products and developing a vision for the future.
The event will attempt to cover the entire denim value chain, and will witness international participation. It will offer a platform for companies to spread awareness about design & development; emerging technologies and applications; and eco-friendly garment washing, paving the path for manufacturing greener denim as well as smarter denim apparel.
The business expo will include a focused buyer-seller meet section, enabling the businesses to reap the benefits from the presence of serious and genuine decision makers from denim industry.

    Exhibition at InDIGO 2012

The event offers an opportunity to show-case latest innovations, products and technology, for the denim industry segment leaders, to a very large number of professionals, buyers and decision makers from the denim industry.

While covering all the segments of denim value chain, from fiber to finished goods, it will provide an opportunity to all stakeholders from denim supply chain, from across the globe, to come together under one roof and meet and interact with each other in an informal and congenial environment.

    Denim Conference at InDIGO 2012
The conference at InDIGO 2012, spanning over two days, will focus on innovation, capacity building, sustainability and growth opportunities in denim. It will witness a galaxy of eminent industrialists, learned professionals and technicians sharing their deep insight and wealth of knowledge with the participants, by way of interactive panel discussions and / or presentations, covering a wide range of subject lines relating to the Indian and international scenario in denim industry.
The theme of the InDIGO 2012 conference, as the name itself suggests, is “International Denim Industry – Growth Opportunities”. The idea behind is to explore and evaluate the opportunities, that are emerging, in the South Asian region, for collaborative working, technology exchange, expertise sharing, among the industry segment leaders. The theme session will highlight the key areas and respective strengths of individual players, and propose solutions which will guide the process of internationalization of denim industry in this region.
One major area of concern, in the context of Indian denim industry, is that the recent quantitative growth needs to be matched with qualitative evolution of the industry. The industry has to identify, understand and implement strategies and solutions to become globally competitive. The session titled “Indian Denim Industry – Growth & Evolution” will address these issues and concerns.
The conference will also take a close look at the innovations in denim, leading to constant evolution of the fabric of the people and for the people. In the recent years, a lot has happened in terms of improvement in quality and durability of fabric, along with the introduction of stretch denim, and  wide range of blends which have redefined denim. The session “Innovations in Denim – The Road Ahead” will attempt to review the past and peek at the denim of the future.
In today’s world, it is not possible to talk about denim and stay away from environmental pollution. The trend in denim fashion is turning more and more towards ecological concerns. Lower impact on the environment implies more style! The new must in production of denim is attention to sustainability not only of processes but also adapting eco-friendly technologies and fabrics. Saving of water and energy, use of fewer chemicals and less pollution of water bodies are becoming the integral symbols of a conscious style. “Denim Goes Green” is dedicated to a discussion on an environment friendly approach for the various segments of the denim industry.
Another very critical, though not so visible, dimension of the business of denim is about meeting quality standards, proper product testing and compliance. The manufacturers need to understand, very clearly, the possible defects and how to avoid them, so as to avoid rejections and losses. It is of critical importance to be familiar with the large variety of tests and certifications, sought in the international market and be prepared to deliver the same to continue to sell. Moreover, compliance related issues are gaining more and more importance, and proper knowledge of these will become essential for a company to remain in business. The session “Product Testing & Compliance – Doing It Right” will turn the spot-light to matters related to quality, testing and compliance.
Denim jeans make up one of the most fragmented, but also one of the most lucrative sectors of the apparel industry, with products aimed at men, women, teens and children. In the competitive era, retailers and brands alike are looking at new ways to grow business and enhance customer loyalty. With the internet serving as an important tool for both purchasing and researching apparel online shopping or e-tailing is also becoming increasingly popular. The discussion in the session “Finding Growth in Retail Market” will focus on how to seize the current challenges in order to be a future winner.

  • Bangladesh Denim Market

bangladesh denim industryBangladesh is one of the most important centre for denim apparel production and export around the world. In fact, it has come up as the third most important exporter of denim apparel to US after Mexico and China and second highest to EU after China.  With thousands of small and big garment units in Bangladesh, it is also one of the cheapest production centre for apparel around the world . Also , it is the world’s most concentrated cluster of apparel production with most of the units centered in and around the city of Dhaka and some around Chittagaong.
While most of the aforesaid is known , what is not well known is that Bangladesh is also coming up as large textile industry centre . A number of new spinning and weaving mills have come up in the country and these include denim weaving mills also. While Bangladesh has traditionally been a fabric importer, the emergence of these mills is changing the equation for the exporters of fabrics to this country.

In this report , lets see :

    a) What is the total market size for denim fabrics in Bangladesh ?
    b) What is the production of denim fabrics in Bangladesh – total and mill wise – giving capacities of mills and approx utilization.
    c) What is the total import market for Denim fabrics in BD?
    d) What are the major export destination markets for these products and what are the actual exports to US (till May 2012) and for EU (till April 2012) . How does it compare with the same period last year ? EU exports seem to be increasing while US exports are falling (see figures)
    e) An (public) report from a denim mill in Bangladesh (which can be downloaded)  and  will give an idea on

    • Financials of operating denim mill in Bangladesh.
    • SWOT analysis of denim industry in Bangladesh
    • Some idea on prices received by denim mills for their fabrics in BD.
    • Balance sheet and statement of income.
    • And many other useful aspects of denim operations in BD.
    • An idea on the buyers who buy from local mills and approx prices .

(the report is in about 1000 words)

The share of imported fabrics is decreasing by the day as the capacities of Bangladesh Denim mills keeps on increasing every year.
    [private_special]
Bangladesh has  a total market size of about 270 million mtrs of denim (2011). Almost the entire quantity is used for manufacturing of apparel for export. Though , of course, the actual quantity of denim consumed will vary from year to year , depending on orders from overseas markets, this is the approximate quantity that has been consumed in the country in the year 2011. In 2012, this quantity is expected to be lower as we find that the orders from US and EU both have reduced and the figures of exports from Bangladesh are lower.

    Domestic Production

The installed capacity of  domestic production of denim fabric in Bangladesh is about 233 million mtrs. This is the installed capacity. The capacity utilization of denim mills in Bangladesh is between 80-85% and hence the actual production estimate for denim in BD is about 191 million mtrs.  The breakup of the production capacities mill wise is given below :

    Mill Name Capacity (mmpa)
    Partex Denim 22
    Envoy Textiles 22
    Yogotex Fabrics Co. Ltd. 20
    Shasha Denim 18
    Ha Meem Denims Ltd. 18
    Pacific Denims Ltd. 16.5
    Nassa Taipei Denims Ltd 14.5
    Chittagong Denim Ltd 10
    Royal Denims Ltd 10
    Jamuna Denims Ltd 9.2
    Deep Textiles Mills 8
    Salek Textiles 7.5
    Argon Denim 7.5
    Bengal Indigo 7.2
    Sinha Denim Limited. 7
    Desh Denim Mills 7
    Dhaka Denim Mill 6.5
    Beximco Denim Ltd 6
    Mahmud Denims Limited 6
    Mab Denim Limited. 6
Titas Spinning & Denim Company Ltd. 5
    Total 233.9

    Imported Fabrics

So what is the approx imported fabrics that are coming into Bangladesh. The approximate figures for these fabrics coming into Bangladesh are about 90 million mtrs. This is still a huge quantity . However, if we consider that about 7-8 years back almost the entire quantity of denim was being imported, the market share of imported fabric is going down steeply. Also, there are planned expansions of more than 50 million mtrs in the coming year in Bangladesh and this will further push out the imported fabrics – unless there is a huge increase in order position (which does not seem likely in 2012).  This cake of about 100 million mtrs is divided principally between the following countries exporting denim fabrics .

    India
    Pakistan
    China
    Indonesia
    Thailand

Some quantities of fabrics comes from countries like Turkey, US and even Japan – but these are mainly against nominated orders only.

The mills likely to be hit most by the increased capacities in Bangladesh are the ones that cater to the lower end of the market  as Bangladesh mills are slowly becoming as competitive as those from India, Pakistan and other countries. Besides there are costs associated with importing fabrics(l/c opening , importing , custom clearance, port costs etc)  which the domestic fabrics do not have  Also, the orders which are highly time sensitive may slowly be replaced by domestic mills as they will be in a position to supply faster. The BD mills, however, face some drawbacks when compared with overseas mills in that they are still behind in terms of R & D and quality of products. Hence the orders which are meant for high quality conscious buyers are being served by the overseas mills and BD mills cater more to the lower end . However, with companies like Partex , Envoy , Sasha coming up very well , using India, Turkish and European technicians, the days are nor far ahead when these mills will be able to have the qualities made by top mills in India, Pakistan etc.

Where is the  denim apparel going from Bangladesh  ?

Lets look at some figures of exports of denim apparel from Bangladesh

    Desination 2011 (million pcs) 2011 (YTD) 2012
USA( all denim apparel) 66 21.6 (Jan – May) 16.8 (Jan- May)
EU (jeans only) 106 31.02 33.5 (Jan- April)
    EU (Other products – estimated) 6 2 2

Apart from the above two destinations, the BD ships to Latin America, African countries, Australia etc. With India having given a duty free access to BD , now India has become an important destination for BD exporters.
Also , it can be seen from the above chart that while exports to US in the first five months of the year are very dismal and are already short by about 22%. However the exports to EU have increased by about 7% – which is a great achievement given the situation of EU . The imports into EU are actually not increasing and the increasing exports from Bangladesh is an indication that it is cannabalizing on the exports from other countries like China.

Here is a link to a report from Envoy Textiles – one of the most imp denim mill from Bangladesh. This report ,which is an IPO filing gives various details about the operation of the company , the financials, the product prices and many other info in its 146 page report. • The Online Denim Show Launched

We are pleased to announce the creation and beta launch of a new digital tool for the denim industry. We are starting an ‘ Online Denim Show’  which will help denim mills to show their collections to their own buyers as well to new buyers around the world.

Having worked in the denim industry for a long time,  it is easy to understand the complexities involved in the process of new fabric developments and their marketing to buyers.  Companies develop many fabrics  and the time taken thereafter in arranging them to be sent to right customers in desired number of washes and looks is not very short. It is often felt that it is not practical to do sampling of all new developed products to most of the customers – for the reason of time and costs involved . Often , a customer may not end up looking at a fabric which a mill developed and which he wanted , for the simple reason that the fabric was either not sent to him or the right washes or styles could not be sent due to physical limitations.

Often,  I have seen that the mills have beautiful fabrics which are lying down deep in the heap of  R&D department because the marketing deptt and the buyers are overwhelmed by many other latest developments and often they themselves lose track of all developments that the company has done before.

On the other hand , the buyers normally find it difficult to browse through a large number of samples sent by mills. Also, the buyers need some basic sorting of products on the basis of which they can go through various products. We provide various options in this regard. Would a sourcing person from a large brand be happy if he/she is able to browse through denim products of 5 denim mills in over an hour and make a shortlist of the products that interest him/her so that in the upcoming meetings those products could be focused on ..????

Another reason for this development is that we strongly feel that the world is getting digitized – no aspect of our life is being left untouched by digitization. Every industry is gaining from this process and improving efficiencies and so should the denim industry. So , we decided to create an online tool to help create more efficiencies specially in the process of product marketing  .  This ‘ Online Denim Show’ has been developed over a long period of time keeping in mind the considerations and concerns of the people working in the industry specially the denim mills and buyers of fabrics. The features of this show are listed below :

    For Exhibitors / Mills

    Denim Show | Exhibitors

    a) Display in Multiple Forms: The mills can upload the details and the photographs of their fabrics . Each product can be displayed in a number of ways eg in pure fabric form , different washed looks , different styles eg jeans/jackets etc . So each product can be displayed in 10 or more different ways. This enables a buyer to have a very good idea about that product .

b)Categorize products : Strictly denim specific categorization of products helps the buyers to understand products under one category. The exhibitors can create their own categories for products besides using the ones that we provide ..

c)Close Physical View: If the  photographs are taken as per our guidance, then we can surely say that the buyers would get the intricate looks of the fabrics/garments due to the software used by us. The product will be visible as it may be at different physical distances and almost give the Feel and Smell of the fabric!!

    d) Old and New Buyers : The exhibitors can not only show their products to their existing buyers, but also will be able to get to show their products to new buyers who register at our site from around the world.  This will open up the possibilities of getting New Buyers for the exhibitors. But hey, will the products be visible to everyone ? What about privacies of products of each company  ??????
Well, we have taken care of that. No buyer can enter the showroom of a supplier unless he/she is

    • First approved by us .
    • Secondly approved by the exhibitor .

Thus we have kept two stages of checking and filtration to ensure only the really genuine buyers/agents/sourcing guys etc can enter our show and only those whom the company wants to show its products to. This show is ONLY FOR SERIOUS DENIM PEOPLE.

e)No. of Products: For initial few exhibitors, we have not kept any limitation on the number of products they can upload and display. This gives the flexibility to these exhibitors to bring out all of their products to the attention of the buyers. I think it would be interesting for even the marketing guys from these companies to see how their products look when seen in different categories/washes/styles in a continuous loop form.

    f) Communication on each product : If the buyer and exhibitor want, they can have a communication on our site related to Each Single Product. The exhibitor would come to know what kind of products are more popular and who is visiting them more and liking them and also check out their comments. This would help them to get speedy feedbacks on their products. Thus they can generate database on the kind of responses they are getting on different products and take their development accordingly. They can also understand which products are more popular.

g)Privacy Ensured: We know the sensitivity of mills in sharing their information related to pricing , product details etc. On our site, they Need Not make any mention of prices and only show as much details of their products as they would like to . They can easily take their communication offline with the buyers once they have initial contact and responses on products.  Hence, this is not a cause of anxiety at our show.

h)Continuous Evolvement : The show shall receive feedbacks from the exhibitors and buyers and continuously develop new features to make the interaction as close to real as possible . Having our own development team gives us that strength to develop features in shorter time and with more flexibility.

i)Twice a year collections launch: We will actually have a period of about one week every six months when the companies can launch their collections online. We shall be promoting these events and ensuring buyer participation so that these collections are specially viewed by the buyers. These seasonal offerings would be one of the key strengths of our Online Show.

j)Customized Homepage: We shall create  a customized homepage for each exhibitor. This homepage will include info from the company as well as any videos, presentations, and news from the company. This homepage will enable the companies to have their own unique vibe to their show and will be visible to all visitors.

We shall be  further providing to our exhibitors :

    • Continuous and unlimited email /phone support for 365 days.
    • Admin facility where they can themselves upload and track their products and buyers. Alternatively , we will do it for them if they want.
    • For the first 5 exhibitors , we will also provide support of shooting their collections in the right format if they want.
    • Guidance on how they can make their showrooms more attractive and display their products properly. Since this is a new concept , we shall be literally hand holding them through the entire processes until they can do it themselves.
    • Creating their customized Homepage on our site where their own photographs, info , videos and any other details may be displayed.

    Buyers/Visitors

The buyers can easily register FREE on our site at this pageOur only requirement from those registering on our site is that they should be people from the denim brands/ retailers/ trading houses etc who are involved in the denim selection and purchase activities. They could be designers, sourcing guys, buyers, account managers ,agents etc. We shall individually verify each registrant to ensure that we are getting the right people in.  While this may cause a little inconvenience , it will make the further process of visiting showrooms and interacting with exhibitors seamless.

The buyers can save and like the products they like and initiate dialogue with the suppliers on individual products. They will find the process of browsing through the products easy and enable them to quickly scan hundreds of products and shortlist. Imagine – sitting at the airport , waiting for the flight , and being able to go through the collection of a few companies and sending them the comments so that when they come for a meeting in the next few weeks, they could bring more samples of pieces selected .

    Demo Of Show Functionalities

Since this is a private show, it will not be completely  visible to general visitors. For those who wish to know more about the show and understand it , we would be giving a one to one online  demonstration over the skype .  We have also created ‘Test’ exhibitor on our site with a showroom to enable the companies to see how a typical showroom would look like and to understand what kind of looks denim products may have on our site.

Contact us  at this email address if you wish to know more about the show or want to have a demo.

  • Denim Mfg. Process : Part 1–Spinning

Denim Academy - OrtaAs mentioned before , we are starting the denim production education series of articles. The content for these articles on various stages of denim production has been kindly provided by Denim Academy of Orta Anadolu – the premium denim mill from Turkey.  The first article concentrates on the Yarn production process upto the formation of Rope – ready for dyeing.

    Preparation

Yarn Preparatory - Denim Manufacturing Process
Yarn spinning starts with the transfer of the cotton bales from warehouse chosen by a special software to the blowing room feeder as a initial step of yarn spinning process. From this point onwards, cotton undergoes preparation processes like cleaning, opening and blending with the content of other bales. During this process, the fibers which are too short are extracted.

    Carding

    Carding Process - Denim Manufacturing

    The cotton fibers are then subjected to a carding operation that ensures that the fibers are parallel to each other. At the same time a vigorous and detailed cleaning of material to be used in yarn production is carried out in order to be ready for the next phase of manufacturing. As a result of the cottonCarding Process - Denim Manufacturing fibers are transformed from the compressed , randomly mixed material containing impurities to SLIVER which have been neatly stacked in cans ready for the next processes. The main processes in carding machines are;

    • Opening of the fiber bundles to separate
    • Removal of extraneous and dust
    • Elimination of short fibers
    • Removal of neps
    • Obtaining fiber evenness
    • Blending properly
    • Producing sliver from cotton fibers

    Drawing: Draw Frames

    image

In draw-frames, slivers from different carding machines are brought together to form a homogenous blend and parallelism of the fibers is further enhanced. The fiber hook-ends that are a part of the fiber nature are flattened and fibers are further elongated.

    Roving Frames

    Roving Frames - Denim Manufacturing

In order to monitor the weight per unit length of the Sliver under control highly developed electronic regulation systems are utlilized. The Sliver  from the drawing frame operation with uniform mass per unit length are further drawn out by the roving frame operation . They are then wound on to tubes which can be used on the yarn machines. Roving is the final step beforeimage yarn is produced.   In the roving frame process, A particular amount of draft force is applied on sliver where the yarn does not only get thinner, but also twisted to keep its strength, as the fiber quantity in cross-section area decreases.

    Spinning – Ring Frames

    Spinning Process - Denim Manufacturing

After this operation ,the Rovings are subjected to a further  drawing out operation on the ring machines and are further thinned out to the required yarn thickness. During this operation the yarn gravity is subjected to a twist in order to give it the required durability. The ring machine determines the surface  structure  and the  physical attributes of the yarn being produced. Due to the yarn production system that can also produce effects, the yarns can be given the effects that will determine effect the visual appearance of the fabric. It is worth noting that all the yarn production machines at Orta have the ability to create effects in the yarns. The Spinning frame sets the yarn count by adjusting the draft, gives required amount of twist and winds it on to the cops (small tubes).  The yarn produced through Ring Frame is more soft and has more strength and character as compared to those produced by the Open End machines.

    Winding

    Winding Process - Denim Manufacturing

The last phase of the yarn production is the Winding Process. Here the cops produced by the ring machines are spliced (joined) together and transformed into the bobbin format of specific length . The Splicing process is very important from the point of view of productivity of the subsequent phases where bobbins will be used and final appearance of the fabric. During the winding process , the yarns are monitored forWinding Process - Denim Manufacturing every mm of the way by high technology sensors on the bobbin machines and the faulty areas that may affect the texture of the fabric are eliminated. Any yarn defects (unevenness, yarn count, thin&thick places etc.) are detected and removed during winding.   Yarn spinning is completed by winding process.

    Ball Warping

Creel Section - Ball Warping : Denim Manufacturing
Ball Warping –from the point of view of color quality and authentic appearance is the preliminary preparation for the Rope Dyeing System- which is the preferred system of denim production. The yarns that will be used in the warping of the fabric are stacked in the ball warping machines Creel section and all brought to the front of the machine to be transformed  into Rope . The Rope thus produced and Cones are warped as ropes at ball warping and prepared for Indigo rope dyeing process.

Check out the entire spinning process from video below provided by the  Denim Academy .
