EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To WORLD During 2017 – 2019

The exports of denim fabric to the World by EU has been decreasing since last  3 years . This is only to be expected as there are very few mills left in EU as many have closed down. Against a volume of about 39 million sq mtrs in 2017, only about 33 million sq mtrs were exproted in 2019 . The price remained almost the same at about Euro 3.83 – 3.90/ sq mtr.

    Country Wise Exports

Out of the total exports of EU fabrics, we further anaylze the important markets they exported to and to understand if some markets are growing for EU fabrics.

    Exports to COLOMBIA During 2017 – 2019

The denim fabric exports by EU to COLOMBIA has seen a rise of 9.6% from 2017 to 2018 but dropped significantly in 2019. The total fabric exported was 2.5 lakhs sqm at an average price of 4.10 Euro/sqm in the year 2019. The average price at which the denim was exported in 2018 was 3.52 euro/sqm. Thus there is wide change in both quantities and prices for exports to this market. Colombia has been growing as a market and with many global companies invading the market, the prices too slashed down and EU companies found it more difficult to compete.

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To TUNISIA During 2017 – 2019

Tunisia is the largest export destination for EU fabrics for conversion to garments for reexport and the figures say so. However, inspite of it being so, the volumes to Tunisia too have fallen in last 3 years. We can see a fall of about 20% in 2019 over 2017 figures with prices also taking a nosedive. Around 8 % fall in the export can be seen from previous years.

On the whole, the export scene of Indian denim fabrics is improving since there is huge pressure in domestic market and companies are looking overseas seriously . Many companies who were mainly domestic sellers turned to exports aggresively. We will see this trend to continue with higher vigour in this year – the China corona factor is expected to provide further impetus as global buyers look for alternative sources for their fabrics.

  • European Parliament Finally Ratifies EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA)

European Parliament Finally Ratifies EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA)

Finally ! the much awaited EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement along with EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) ratified on Feb 12, 2019 in the EU Parliament with 401 votes for, 192 against and 40 absentions. The negotiation for which started in Oct 2010 finally culminated in the ratification of the treaty. The agreement was signed on June 30 last year and was expected to be effective soon. After the European ratification, both the agreements are expected to be passed in the upcoming session of the Việt Nam’s Nation Assembly in April-May and likely to come into effect from July this year in Việt Nam. The agreement will be opening up opportunities for the Vietnam to enter into a huge market which has GDP value worth $18 trillion. This is going to be a major push for Vietnam’s exports and will allow the global players to expand their businesses into one of the fastest economies of SEA. Currently VietNam is the EU’s second largest trading partner in the ASEAN region with trade value of €49.3 billion for goods and over €3 billion for services.

At a press conference on this event held by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Hà Nội the same day, Minister of Industry and Trade Trần Tuấn Anh said:

“This is a meaningful result for Việt Nam and the EU, two comprehensive strategic partners.”

The agreement will remove virtually all tariffs between the two parties ( EU and Viet Nam) in ten years. Under this agreement, Việt Nam will reduce 65 per cent of import tarrif on EU commodities after it comes into effect, while the rest will be erased over a 10-year period. Meanwhile, the EU will cut more than 70 per cent of tariffs on Việt Nam’s commodities , and the rest will be abolished over the seven subsequent years. According to research by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the two deals will help Việt Nam increase its GDP by 4.6 per cent and its exports to the EU by 42.7 per cent by 2025. Meanwhile, the European Commission has projected the EU’s GDP to increase by $29.5 billion and its exports to Việt Nam by 29 per cent by 2035.

President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said:

“I welcome the decision taken today by EU Member States. After Singapore, the agreements with Viet Nam are the second to have been concluded between the EU and a Southeast Asian country, and represent stepping stones to a greater engagement between Europe and the region. It is also a political statement by two partners and friends standing together for open, fair and rules-based trade.”

Meanwhile, Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström said:

“I am very pleased to see that Member States have given a green light to our trade and investment agreements with Viet Nam. Viet Nam is a vibrant and promising market of more than 95 million consumers and both sides have much to gain from stronger trade relations.”

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, once the EVFTA takes effect, Viet Nam’s export value to the EU is projected to increase by 20% by 2020, 42.75 by 2025, and 44.37% by 2030.

European Parliament ratifies EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA)

SEA countries have signed 13 FTAs with external partners, of which EVFTA and CPTPP are considered the “new-generation” deals with higher and broader commitments. The Government estimated that the CPTPP, which took effect since January 14, 2019, will help increase Viet Nam’s GDP by 1.3% and export value by 4% by 2035. You can refer the below infographic to understand the number of FTAs Vietnam right now have. Vietnam is now one of the biggest exporters of garments to the USA now, with this EVFTA, Vietnam is going to increase its presence in EU countries very strongly. Garment exports would be one of the biggest beneficiary industry under this agreement  . Vietnam is , in any case, being benefited due to increasing costs in China and many customers have shifted their sourcing base . Once duty benefits are available , huge benefits are expected to accrue to Vietnam .

Wrangler Launches 100 Percent Water Elimination Technology

Most of us are already aware that Sustainability is the need of the hour in the denim industry as denim manufacturing creates excessive levels of waste. Major brands are putting in efforts to conserve the environment and nature and there is increased activity down the line . Another remarkable effort made recently by the US based denim brand, Wrangler , touches another milestone in producing denims without generating waste and pollution.

The conventional dyeing process has been removed with sustainable ways of creating denim. The new innovation by the brand promises to eradicate water wastage upto 100 percent. This foam dyed technology is called Indigood  that eliminates 100 percent water waste generated through conventional dyeing methods in denim manufacturing. Not only this, Indigood reduces energy consumption and energy waste by 60 % as compared to other methods of dyeing. This new technique was created in partnership with Texas Tech University and a Spanish fabric mill , Tejidos Royo in Valencia. The detailed process of this technology was reported in an article at our site here last year when it was undergoing installation and now the actual collection is out in the market and we bring an updated info on the same.

“We’re proud to have helped pioneer a technology that has the potential to revolutionize sustainability standards for denim,” said Tom Waldron, VP & Global Brand President, Wrangler. “The introduction of Indigood™ foam-dyed denim represents our continued commitment to use our global scale to advance the denim industry, while maintaining the authenticity, quality and style that consumers expect from Wrangler.”

Usually, to prepare a single pair of jeans, it needs gallons of water and chemicals to transfer the indigo to yarn. This new process uses a foaming agent instead of chemicals and that too without wasting water to give the blue color to your denim.  Wrangler, which is owned by Kontoor Brand claims this technology as the most sustainable way of dyeing denim and hope to get other brands on board in using this technique in future.

Visit the new ICON collection by Wrangler here that includes male and female jeans , shirts and jackets in two denim sahdes – Good Day (light) and Good Night (night). Some of these are hand picked below!

Denim Exports From Cambodia To EU Falls By 30% During Jan-August’19

Cambodia has not been able to really cash in to their special status for GSP in Europe because of their infrastructural issues and labor problems where the factories find it tough to operate even though the costs are lower. Vietnam – the next door neighbor – is taking the advantage and improving exports each year even though they don’t have any GSP benefit to Europe. This clearly shows that duty advantages can only be one of the factor which can help a country improve exports. But the country has to manage itself well to be able to perform well.

    [/private_special]

We hope in the coming times, there will be some correction and the country recovers with a bang. Cambodia has great potential but some of the recent events including labor unrest and strikes caused adverse effects on the exports of apparel. The consistency and favorable business policies are need of the hour, the international buyers are now shifting their sourcing base from china and other countries and Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, India, and Ethiopia are one of them which could make the most of it.

From Picture To Laser : A New Tool By RevoLaze

RevoLaze, LLC, a laser technology firm headquartered in Westlake, OH, announced today that it has successfully launched CarbonLaze, an online software tool aimed at significantly decreasing the time to create laser design files, while giving it a more authentic and natural look.

From Picture To Laser–A New Tool By RevoLaze | Denimsandjeans

Over the past several years, the denim industry’s shift to laser etching as the finishing method of choice has resulted in a more sustainable and production friendly practice over hand sanding. The preference for laser etching has also led for the necessary time required to create laser files from denim standards. The time to draw a laser file can range from 2-4 hours for basic patterns and upwards of 8-12 hours for more complex, vintage type patterns. With some manufacturers reporting up to 40 standards a week from brands that need to be converted to laser files, they have difficulty keeping up with this demand and resort back to hand sanding for those standards that cannot be drawn in Photoshop in time.

CarbonLaze online software solves the industry’s great need by providing brands and manufacturers a patent-pending tool to automatically convert these denim standards to laser ready files. The process is simple: take a high quality photograph of the denim garment, upload the photo to CarbonLaze and a laser file is created within minutes. If necessary, laser designers can also go back in Photoshop with the CarbonLaze laser file and make any minor adjustments. Since they are standard laser files, CarbonLaze files will open in Photoshop and work on all laser systems currently in the market.

Vintage garments can be very time consuming and difficult to replicate in Photoshop. In the example below, one of CarbonLaze’s early adopters, Silvermoon Jeans, quickly converted their vintage garment and made a few minor modifications to achieve the look. A file that could take a full day to draw, now only took a few minutes.

According to Darryl Costin Jr., President of RevoLaze, CarbonLaze provides many much-needed benefits to the entire industry,

“This is such an important innovation for every part of the denim supply chain. Decreasing pattern creation from 80% to 100% affords manufacturers the opportunity to save time and money while decreasing harmful labor practices. Smaller orders of hand sand production runs can now be converted to laser. CarbonLaze also provides the denim brands more authentic and natural looking lasered garments by picking up all the details, including more highs and lows, from pictures that are difficult to hand draw in Photoshop.”

RevoLaze feels this online software will greatly help both denim brands and manufacturers. Denim brands can now go back to their archive of vintage garments, quickly convert them with CarbonLaze and send the laser files to their manufacturers. Manufacturers can further improve their productivity, spend less time creating laser files and spend more time developing standards and new looks that were too difficult to design before.

From Picture To Laser–A New Tool By RevoLaze | Denimsandjeans

To RevoLaze’s Vice President of Operations, Ryan Ripley, CarbonLaze software is just one more tool for laser designers to get the most ideal outcomes possible,

“For the past two decades, our main goal as a company is to provide the denim industry ways to maximize their denim finishing capabilities. Last year, we launched LightLaze, another online software program to convert multi-layer laser files into single layer files, in which over 200 users have already realized its benefits. CarbonLaze builds off of this momentum that answers the industry’s desire to speed up the laser file creation process. We look forward to working together with CarbonLaze users to help them hit their design and production goals.”

In addition to the already mentioned benefits, CarbonLaze also picks up the wash characteristics, texture and overall abrasion on the garment, which can reduce wash time of the garment in production. The software even has a unique feature built in that automatically improves the feathering of every file.

The Average Price Of Eu Imports From Bangladesh, China and Pakistan

Bangladesh has been one of the most important denim sourcing locations in the world now and also on the way to become the biggest. Competitive pricing and shorter lead time are two major attributes which made this country very much attractive in the past few years, especially for the mid-range denim brands. However, the inability to cater to smaller MOQs has been becoming a serious issue for the suppliers as well as the buyers. Dependency on imported fabrics, though it is going down, and less focus on innovation and R&D might trouble Bangladesh in the longer run. The rise of Vietnamese Apparel Industry in the past 5 years and to be signed EVFTA between the EU and Vietnam might impact the prospects of Bangladesh if things will not be fixed within due time.

Bangladesh is one of the biggest suppliers to the EU countries and in 2016, the country shipped 121.6 million pcs of Men’s denim and 87.9 million pcs of Women’s denim at an average price of euro 6.30/pc and euro 6.04/pc respectively. In the year 2017, the men’s denim export saw a decline of 0.33% however the exports of women’s denim registered a surge of 6% and it reached to 93.2 million pcs.

In the year 2018, both segments have shown a good amount of growth. Men’s denim grew at 10.75% however Women’s denim outperformed this time also with a growth rate of 15%. Both segments have also maintained their respective price at a more competitive level. Men’s denim average price in 2018 was euro 5.87/pc and women’s denim average price was euro 5.51/pc.

Everything is not well in China, especially with the Textile & Garment Industry. The rise in labor costs and a tariff war with the US has adversely affected Chinese Denim Industry also. Meanwhile, China has also slowly started routing its investment in countries like Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam to compensate for the losses it has been incurring due to these issues .

In 2016, the country shipped 30.08 million pcs of Men’s denim and 49.93 million pcs of Women’s denim at an average price of euro 6.99/pc and euro 6.75/pc respectively. In the year 2017, the men’s denim export saw a massive fall of 14% however the exports of women’s denim registered a surge of 2% and it reached to 50.2 million pcs.

In the year 2018, Men’s segments have shown a good amount of growth. Men’s denim grew at 25% however Women’s denim remained consistent with a growth rate of 2%. Both segments have also maintained their respective price at a more competitive level with 2018 prices slashing severely compared to 2017. This again shows the desparate situation the exporters are in .  Men’s denim average price in 2018 was euro 5.83/pc and women’s denim average price was euro 4.68/pc.

Pakistan has been consistent for the last several years, the country has started to receive the investment from Gulf Countries but any major investment in Textile & Garments Industry has not yet reported yet. However, the proposed China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) may change the prospect of Pakistan Textile & Garment Industry. Under the new leadership, the country has taken several measures in the interest of industry, the government is trying to come up with various initiatives and sops like special energy tariffs in order to cut down the production cost of export items.

Throughout the three years beginning from 2016, Pakistan maintained the export at constant, the export of Men’s denim remained around 70 million pcs and the export of women’s denim varied around 33-35 million pcs. This is not a very good sign for Pakistan as they should actually be growing quite well .
