  • DNA Molecular Tagging to Authenticate Denim | Interview

DNA Molecular Tagging to Authenticate Denim | Interview

Results of a new study published in the September/October 2018 issue of the AATCC Review confirmed that DNA molecular tagging is an effective tool to authenticate denim and maintains its integrity even after exposed to the rigors of bleaching and abrasion. The study was conducted by: Applied DNA Sciences, Inc, and the Fashion Institute of Technology(FIT). It was published in the AATCC Review, a highly regarded publication of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colors.

DNA Molecular Tagging to Authenticate Denim | Interview

At the FIT labs in New York, denim swatches were treated with unique DNA molecular tags produced by Applied DNA, then subjected to stone and bleach washings. The samples were then analyzed at Applied DNA’s laboratories in Stony Brook, where it was proven that the DNA tags remained intact and suitable for high quality forensic scale analysis. Based on the observed stability, DNA tags of this kind may soon be ready for testing at a full manufacturing facility to verify the authenticity of the finished denim garment.

Applied DNA has developed a technology to produce small DNA fragments or identifiers on an industrial scale. Purified enzymes are used to manufacture DNA fragments, each one containing enough information to be used as a DNA-bead or “molecular bar code,” much like an ordinary ink bar code on a label. DNA tags are applied during the cotton ginning phase, enabling the fiber to be tracked and authenticated throughout the entire supply chain.

DNA Molecular Tagging to Authenticate Denim | Interview

There has been a lack of commercially available test methods to determine where denim fibers were grown. This is a concern to manufacturers, as global counterfeiting continues to escalate – rising from USD $1.2 trillion in 2017 to an anticipated USD $1.82 trillion by 2020 (Global Brand Counterfeiting Report 2018). The denim authentication problem is significant since most American cotton, including Upland cotton used to produce denim, is shipped overseas and combined with other cotton where it can lose its identity.

Ms MeiLin Wan - Vice President, Textiles, Applied DNA Sciences Denimsandjeans spoke to Ms MeiLin Wan – Vice President, Textiles, Applied DNA Sciences to get more details on this innovation and to understand how it can help the industry.

1 Congratulations on a ground breaking research on DNA tagging of cotton fibers. How did this research originate and with what purpose .

Before we began offering our technology to authenticate textiles, we set out to prove the DNA would survive aggressive solvent washes in currency.  As you know, US currency is made out of cotton and linen. When money is stolen from a bank machine (ATM) or cash in transit box, there is a permanent ink stain that decorates all the cash. We developed unique DNA tags in these inks. When the currency is stolen and the ink is applied onto the cash, we are able to show the date, time, and place of the crime and can then link it to the criminal when the money is recovered.  Even after attempts to remove DNA from ink stained bank notes using chemicals and solvents (independent lab tested), we are still able to authenticate the DNA from the currency. This gave us confidence to pursue DNA in cotton and show how DNA can persist from fiber all the way to fabric.

DNA tags with proven forensic DNA analysis provides an invaluable tool not just for linking crimes to criminals but also linking cotton growers to consumers by ensuring that the original cotton fiber also has identity with a known date, time and place assigned to it when we tag the cotton at the gin location anywhere in the world. Without DNA tagging you do not know precisely where the cotton comes from. Traceability with DNA is the key.

2 Denim was selected because of rigorous processes it goes through till final finishing. Did all the tags survive this finishing process.

Yes, the DNA survived all the finishing processes. This is what makes the DNA system the most robust for traceability because of its ability to withstand chemical washes.

3 There is lot of mixing of cotton of different origin in the mills. How will tagging solve that problem?

We can detect blending in samples as we know what we have tagged. We also have a method to determine quantitatively the percentage of Pima cotton vs Non Pima (Upland) cotton in a blended sample.

4 Will DNA tagging contribute to sustainability goals of different brands and retailers?

Yes, we believe DNA track and trace solutions help brands and retailers accomplish their sustainability goals by providing PROOF that the claims they are making are backed up with forensically derived data and facts that will hold up as forensic evidence in court.

5 Do you see in near future a global authority which is entrusted with tagging all origins of cotton?

In our opinion, the idea that there is a single global authority to manage global supply chains is unsustainable and unrealistic. This is because it relies on the assumption that the “global authority” has control over each of the steps of the supply chain which is not how supply chains operate. In fact, it starts and ends with each of the parties in the supply — from the raw material supplier to spinner, weaver, cut and sew, trim suppliers all the way to brands and retailers. If everyone works together in an integrated supply chain where the raw material is verified at every step of the supply chain, everyone wins.Tagging will be done at ginners’ end . Already Over 200 million lbs of cotton have been tagged in US and Australia at gins.

  • EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To Tunisia and Morocco: A Study For 2015-2018

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To Tunisia and Morocco: A Study For 2015-2018

The Africa’s most prominent countries , Morocco and Tunisia are great exporters of denim apparel to EU due to their duty free status . For most of their production, they also import denim fabrics to convert them into garments. The EUR2 certificate enables reimport of finished garments at zero duty and hence the garmenting in , specially , these two countries has been sustaining. Of course some locally produced fabrics are also used for garments . Besides , non EU imports of fabrics is also done but the exports of garments made from those fabrics does not entitle the exporters to duty free status in EU. An analysis of the denim fabrics imported from EU into these two countries will give us an idea as to how these countries are manufacturing and re-exporting garments made from these fabrics.

In this report , we have

    • Analysed the Denim Fabric Exports along with average price and growth of EU towards Morocco and Tunisia for 2015-18 ( September’18)

    • Comprehensive analysis of growth in the exports to the two countries along with the changes in the average price.

    1. Denim Fabric Export By EU To Morocco | 2015-2018

Morocco imported more than 5 million sq mtrs of denim in 2017. This year, till September, we can see that the imports are about 4 million sq mtrs which would roughly be about more than 5 million sq mtrs by the end of the year bringing the imports at similar levels as last year.  However, we can also see that the imports in 2016 were much lesser and year 2017 and 2018 have been better – indicating that production is not slipping .

The average price was maximum in 2017 at about 7 Euros, but it seems have slipped to about 6.8 Euros this year. Not a big change, but a fall nevertheless.  However, if we consider that these prices are actually sq mtr prices and if we take linear mtr prices, it might actually be about 10 Euros per mtr, we will understand that the fabrics are actually very expensive.  But most of these fabrics are European and hence cannot be cheap.

    2. Denim Fabric Export By EU To Tunisia | 2015-2018

In 2015, the total quantity of denim fabric imported by Tunisia was 12.5 million sq. mtrs. which increased in the subsequent years. The denim fabric import was recorded as 12.8 million sq mtrs in 2016 which increased by almost 1 million sq mtrs in 2017 showing the significant growth within 1 year. On the whole the quantities are more or less stagnant and show that there is no real growth in fabrics being shipped to Tunisia and that garmenting for European fabrics is not witnessing an upsurge. However it also shows that Tunisia gets more than double the fabric from EU than Morocco.

The trend of the average price across the period 2015-2018 increased consistently showing a rising trend.T he average price was 6.9 euros per sq mtrs in 2015 whereas it has reached upto 8.1 euros per sq. mtrs. till september 2018 – a decent increase.  It also shows that Tunisia is getting more expensive fabrics than Morocco on an average indicating that more fashionable final apparel is being produced in Tunisia.

Denim History To Be Created With Levi Strauss Planning IPO In 2019

Pioneers of blue jeans, the San Francisco-based 145-year-old company – Levi Strauss & Co., is reportedly planning to go for an Initial Public Offering(IPO) to raise between $600 million and $800 million from the market. The company has appointed Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. to plan and manage this public offering by the end of the 1st quarter of 2019, reports CNBC. Estimated valuation of the company is aimed at over $5 billion.

Today, the company is being privately held by the descendants of the family of Levi Strauss, however, Levi’s Japan’s unit and Levi’s bonds are being publicly traded. Though it has been held by private players, the company still needs to report quarterly earnings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This is not the first that the company is going to public, in 1971, the company had gone public to raise USD 50 million from the market and at that time, it was considered to be the biggest IPO ever. Being the biggest IPO ever, it didn’t go very well and later in 1984, the company again reinstated its Private company status by executing a buyout of USD 1.7 billion followed by a further buyout in 1996 covering the stocks of employees as well as the outside investors. Reportedly , Levi’s borrowed a lot to successfully execute this buyout.

    Chip Bergh- CEO Levis

The sales performance of levis has not been consistent in the past few years however the recent quarters went very well with Levis. On Oct. 9, Levi’s reported revenue of $1.4 billion for the quarter ended Aug. 26, which was a 10 percent jump from the same quarter a year ago. Net income was $130 million, representing an increase of 45 percent. During 2017, the company has not only generated a total revenue of nearly $5 billion but the company has also reduced its debt load in half over the last two years.

CEO of Levi’s -Chip Bergh, who has been also the President of the company since 2011, considered as the brain behind this IPO as he is eyeing on his massive expansion plans globally, both in terms of physical stores as well as online penetration via E-commerce. Currently, the company operates about 2,900 retail stores but its products are sold in about 50,000 retail locations across 110 countries.

In January, Bergh told CNBC that about 10 percent of its business is now online, and that proportion is “growing really, really quickly.” Bergh said that its wholesale dot-com business is profitable and its online owned-and-operated business is approaching breakeven.

  • Vietnam EU-FTA Agreement ( EVFTA) Moving Forward

Vietnam EU-FTA Agreement ( EVFTA) Moving Forward

The EVFTA is one of the much-awaited trade agreements which the world is waiting for it to get signed. This new-generation trade agreement between Vietnam and 28 EU member countries. The negotiations on the EVFTA officially concluded on December 1, 2015, and the preliminary text of the agreement was released on February 1, 2016. The EVFTA was split into two Agreements, one for trade and one for investment, on June 26, 2018. Vietnam and the EU formally completed the legal review of their EU-Vietnam FTA and the IPA (the Investment Protection Agreement) in August 2018.

    5 Latest Developments on EU-FTA ( EVFTA)

    1. EuroCham released the data at an event in Brussels to launch its latest report – The EVFTA: Perspectives from Vietnam – on October 8, together with amfori and Business Europe. The launch event, with 70 participants, is part of a EuroCham mission to the European Parliament and European Commission to push for the quick ratification of the EVFTA. On October 17 noon, the European Commission (EC) agreed to submit the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to the European Council to seek its approval for the signing of the deal slated for late 2018 and to the European Parliament (EP) for ratification in 2019. At a press conference on October 17 afternoon, the EU affirmed its commitment to putting the document in place as soon as possible.

    2. A EuroCham survey, which included 132 respondents, showed that an overwhelming 93 percent of enterprises believe that the EVFTA would be implemented in 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. The FTA is said to bring win-win benefits to both Europe and Vietnam, with 85 percent of the European enterprises saying that it will have a “significant” or “moderate” impact on their business or investment plan in Vietnam.
Firms also said that Vietnam’s reform efforts will offer opportunities for the country to integrate deeper into the global economy.
    3. Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade, Tran Tuan Anh, and EU Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom, issued a joint ministerial statement on the EVFTA on the sidelines of the ASEM Summit in Brussels on October 19, 2018. The joint statement welcomed the European Commission’s submission of the FTA to the European Council for approval. The statement stressed that the agreements would open up new opportunities for exports and investment for European and Vietnamese businesses, while also paying special attention to the rights of workers and environmental protection.

    4. Europe is rushing to translate the two agreements into 24 EU languages and accelerate another process before the official signing of the EVFTA, scheduled for late 2018. President of the European Parliament and President of the European Parliament’s International Trade Commission also confirmed that efforts would be made to finalize the ratification of these two agreements early next year in the interests of both sides and for trade benefits between Europe and Asia. The agreements are expected to bring about unprecedented benefits to businesses and peoples of both Europe and Vietnam. The agreements will help European companies gain better access to a market of more than 92 million consumers, while increasing investment, creating more jobs, and boosting trade with one of Asia’s most dynamic economies. Vietnamese exporters will also have easier access to the European market.

    5. By the end of August 2018, 24 out of the 28 EU countries had invested in Vietnam, with 2,141 valid projects worth some US$24.17 billion. Among the EU investors, the Netherlands takes the lead with 318 projects valued at US$9.16 billion, followed by France with 527 projects worth US$3.63 billion, the UK and Germany. Nine out of ten European companies want the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to be implemented in 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, according to new research from the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham).

Trade & Tariffs  Between EU and Vietnam

The EU is now the third largest trading partner and one of the two largest export markets of Vietnam. The import and export structure of Vietnam and the EU complement each other with a less direct competition. Two-way trade revenue between Vietnam and the EU increased more than 12 times from US$4.1 billion in 2000 to US$50.4 billion in 2017. Of which, Vietnam’s exports to the EU increased by 13.6 times (from US$2.8 billion to US$38.3 billion) and Vietnam’s imports from the EU increased by nine times (US$1.3 billion to US$12.11 billion). Vietnam’s main export items to the EU are footwear, garments, and textiles, coffee, furniture, and seafood.

The EU is also a huge investor in Vietnam. EU investors are present in all most of Vietnam’s key economic sectors with the focus on industry, construction and service sectors. The European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (Eurocham) emphasized that when the agreement comes into force, Vietnam will eliminate 65% of duties on EU exports to Vietnam. The remaining tariff lines will be gradually removed in the next 10 years, resulting in the elimination of 99% of duties on goods traded between the two sides.

A tax rate of 0% will be applied to export goods of both sides such as garments and textiles, footwear, seafood, tropical agricultural products, and wood products of Vietnam and automobiles, equipment, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, temperate agricultural products of the EU. The EVFTA also contains provisions to address the existing non-tariff barriers in the automobile industry as well as the protection of geographical indications for 169 European food and beverage products in Vietnam. In general, the EVFTA is expected to increase Vietnam’s GDP  by a large % increase and raise Vietnam’s exports to the EU. High-quality capital is also anticipated to pour into Vietnam and products with European standards will be exported to Vietnam with clear origin.

  • Top Countries Exporting Denim Fabrics To Japan

Top Countries Exporting Denim Fabrics To Japan

Japan imported a wide range of products, although energy sources, raw materials, and food were the major items. The heavy dependency on raw materials that characterized Japan until the mid-1980s reflected both their absence in Japan and the process of import substitution industrialization, in which Japan favored domestic industries over imports. The production of the Japanese clothing manufacturers and spinning companies have shifted to overseas sites where they get lower  manufacturing costs, and the percentage of overseas production is increasing year by year. Consequently, the domestic production volume of apparel materials such as leather, yarns, and textiles has been declining for the past years, leading to a falling trend in the volume of imports. Denim fabric , though produced in decent quantities in Japan, is also imported from some countries as Japan misses certain kind of products which are not made in their country. Of course, Japan is a huge buyer of denim jeans and apparel , but that shall be subject of another report.

US Shows 5 Percent Growth In Imports of Denim In 2018

Denim industry, looking for a good news for sometime, finally seems to have some. The denim apparel imports into US showed a 6% growth in 2018 . Since the beginning of this year , we have been witnessing growth in imports and the pace has picked up in the second quarter. This growth is specially interesting as it comes on top of an increase in average price of imports by over 4% . Since the year 2010 when the imports into US were at their peak , the market has slackened and could never attain that peak. Year 2018 is again showing a shimmer of hope that the US market might finally be on strong positive path and try to cross milestones it did in last decade.

The US economy is seeing its strongest growth in many decades – it grew 4.2% in 2nd Quarter of 2018 . The growth is likely to be strong in the near future as per most experts.   The strengthening US$ has also added to the improved situation of imports making it easier for the buyers to get a better price and sellers to realize better margins.  On the whole, a positive situation for the global denim industry specially considering that EU market is also going strong !

  • Comeback Of Bleached Jean Trend For SS 19

Comeback Of Bleached Jean Trend For SS 19

Stonewashed Denim , Acid – Washes and Bleach Spots marked this season with a comeback already. Along with the fast fashion, denim trends achieve a new milestone every season . For Spring/Summer 2019, bleached denim definitely seems to have re-appeared as a striking trend. Though acid wash has been more regularly seen for last couple of seasons, this spring the light blue shade is back in types of apparel from slim jeans to western shirts to jackets.. For starters, the stuff doesn’t look like it has been attacked by toilet- chemicals and has more subtle and mature fadings.

According to TagWalk, a one-stop search engine for the enlighted fashion girl, there is an increase in bleached denim by 348 percent over the last year. The trend was spotted in multiple SS 19 collection this season. Some high end labels including Stella McCartney , Alberta Ferretti, Alexander Wang, and Balmain, represented the acid washes in the runways with pale blue colour. Indigo wash effects are more contemporary and modern .

Kaia Gerber is shown wearing  an impressive bleach spot boiler suit from the Stella McCartney spring 2019 collection. Also, The former Girls Aloud star , Cheryl, was spotted in a pair of high-slung bleached jeans while making her way to Paris Fashion Week.  Apparently, going about acid washes, bleaching, and tie-dyed for the next summer/spring seasons is going to be a serious business

The style upgrade is all over the fashion world and we will not be very surprised if this style starts popping up everywhere around us. Different brands have already started laying out the new designs with the bleaching. Let’s have a look at some!

A likely effect of this trend catching up would to take focus a little away from super stretches and soft fabrics – which have been dominating the women jeans trend for a long time. Super stretches fabrics may not be the best fabrics for this trend.

This table presents the ranking of top 10 countries which have grown the most in terms of Sales during the Q3 of 2018 . Iceland surprises the list with Rank 1 with a growth rate of 362% (however it has only 2 stores)  followed by New Zealand with 106%. The number of stores as on Aug 31,2018 for both the countries were 2 and 4 respectively and the sale/store were USD 3.30 million and 1.93 Million respectively. The highest sale/store was found in Chile which had USD 5.28 Million sale per store with 8 stores only . Chile is growing at 22% . There are two countries from South East Asia in the list – India and China . For Q3 , India grew at a rate of 49% with 34 stores in hand and the total sales for Q3 was USD 47.08 million ( USD 1.38 million / Store) however China , which has 522 stores as on August 31 , managed to draw sales of USD 0.68 million per store.

If we compare the sales figures of nine months , India marked the growth rate of 29% and the per store sales were then USD 3.64 million . The per store/month sales comes to about $0.4 million for India against China’s $0.23 million . Its growth rate is the highest if we consider a reasonable number of stores (ie about 25) . But we need to consider that China is growing at a bigger base of over 500 stores and hence its growth rate of 21% is also appreciable.

Its closest competitor Zara has been doing very well in online sales and so H&M . The retailers need to do a lot to make supply chain little quicker. Not to forget , Zara delivers the products within a day time via its online sales in many countries.
