Amazon Targets A Big Share Of $254 Billion Apparel Sales In US !

Amazon – a behemoth with global sales of USD 107 billion in 2015 ,  more than 304 million active customer accounts and over 2,30,000 employees  – is using its power to crack open a big share in the US$ 254 billion Apparel market in the US.  Amazon has already reached a level where it can claim about 6.6% of the market. That share is expected to increase to 8.2% by next year and further expand to 16.2% within five years as reported by CNN.

By 2021, Cowen Analysts expect Amazon to generate $62 billion in annual apparel sales . TJ Maxx is expected to be the No. 2 clothing seller, with $26 billion in sales, and Macy’s is expected to claim the No. 3 spot, with $23 billion in sales. If this happens , it will change the contours of the global apparel scene causing a big realignment in the way apparel is sold. Amazon does not own any brick and mortar stores and only  with its online sales if it is able to get close to the predicted figures, it will shake up the industry.

Amazon has been adopting a multi pronged strategy to achieve this target.

    Amazon Fashion

    Launching Own Brands

Amazon has been quitely launching its own brands . It has launched Seven brands recently.  These brands cover different segments of clothing retail including Men, Women and Children clothing. Most of the clothing from these brands are priced less than USD 100/- .

    • Franklin & Freeman – Men’s dress shoes
    • Franklin Tailored – Men’s suits and accessories
    • James & Erin – Women’s clothing
    • Lark & Ro – Women’s clothing (Also available in Canada)
    • Society New York – Women’s clothing
    • North Eleven – Women’s accessories for cold weather
    • Scout + Ro – Children’s clothing
    • Amazon has also started to shift its fashion strategy toward offering more high-end designer names such as Zac Posen and Stuart Weitzman.

Fashion Talent , Sponsorships & more..

Amazon is trying to ramp up its presence in fashion scenes by various sponsorships at the moment. It recently sponsored the New York Men’s Fashion Week.  We will see more of such presence by Amazon in different fashion events around the world soon.

The company  has been hiring top fashion talent from reputed labels. These include executives from luxury fashion companies like Barneys and fashion editor from Vogue.

Amazon also recently bought Zappos – online shoe retailer – for about USD 1 billion indicating that it is heeling itself deep into the Apparel and Shoe category and wants to dominate the world apparel scene in the coming times.  Step by step Amazon is going in the direction of making Apparel and accessories one of its mainstays. Currently only about 15% of its shoppers shop apparel from its online store while the company is not really regarded as an curated seller of apparel. Once Amazon digs its heels in , we might see many offline and online apparel retailers might struggle. The key would , however , be the fact how well Amazon owned brands can do . Its anybody’s guess !

Will we see a denim brand  coming out from the stables of Amazon to shake up the global denim retail  ?? We will know soon …

Cambodia’s garment sector is doing fine. ANZ Bank recently predicted 7.2% GDP growth in 2016, mainly fuelled by rising clothing exports. And just-released data from the International Labour Organization (ILO) points to a 14.7% jump in the country’s clothing shipments to US$1.605bn during the first quarter of 2016. Garment exports to US have been falling for the past five years, dropping 14.2% toUS$1.2bn in the six months from January to June which is a matter of deep concern for the country. However there are strong hopes of revival for Cambodian industry in the coming years as China loses more and more of its share. [/private_special]

  • TCE Denim From Korea Celebrates 60th Anniversary And Expands Production

TCE Denim From Korea Celebrates 60th Anniversary And Expands Production

imageTCE denim – a South Korean company -  is the largest denim manufacturer in Vietnam and is set to grow bigger expanding to 3.5 million yards per month in 2017.  One of the earliest mills in Vietnam, TCE sees considerable denim growth happening in Vietnam and hence have decide to grow exponentially from their current capacity.

TCE is probably one of the 5 oldest denim company in Asia and celebrated its 60th anniversary .  The company started manufacturing denim fabrics in 1969 when there only a couple of companies like Kaihara had begun producing denim within Asia  in Japan. It has a rich history and tradition in denim and had a great mill running in Korea until the rising costs of production made it difficult to produce in Korea. Having continued and serve the industry for many years, the company took the decision a few years back to move to Vietnam- a country which has not only abundant , skilled and disciplined labor but also a growing local population and most importantly rising stature as an international sourcing country. Vietnam seems on course to clock USD 29 billion of textile and garment exports this year as per target and inspite of TPP losing steam, the country is going ahead on the strength of its infrastructure and potential benefits from other regions.

    20161215_13183420161215_133519

On a trip to cover the 60th anniversary of the company on their invitation a, it was great to speak to Mr Stanley Thwang  . He was enthusiastic about their 60th anniversary and expansion of capacity. He mentioned about the long history of his company . He also spoke about one of the greatest strengths of his company – they make their own rope dyed machines . This is

“Our company started in 1956 but our denim production in 1969 and we were perhaps the third company in Asia after Kaihara and Kuroki to make denim fabrics. Besides we also produce our own Rope Dyeing machines . The entire designing , manufacturing and erection of the Rope dyed machines is done by our team. That is one of our strong points. Our latest machines has 22 dips  which provides the dark indigo color the market needs. We are currently making 1.5 million yards per month in Vietnam and expanding to 3.5 million yards. We shall be having 5 Rope dyeing machines for this capacity. One of these machines will be optional  and will be used for color dyeing including sulphurs , reactives, topping and bottoming”

The company showed some of their latest products which include the NETTLE Denim – made of nettle fiber from Nepal and which is a very eco friendly fiber using minimum natural resources and has anti bacterial properties , some special constructions including herring bone  , functional fabrics inclding recycled coffee fabrics with moisture control functions  and others.

    On Vietnam, Mr Stanley said

“Vietnam market will be very booming. EU FTA is expected to be implemented by Jan 1, 2018 and European buyers have already started coming. Also the effect of China is there whereby there is a shift in buying from China to Vietnam and this is causing demand in Vietnam. Besides we will be going for a vertically integrated facility including garment manufacturing to provide full package facility to our buyers from US and EU. “

Behind Closed Doors By Ian Berry

Ian Berry, A London based Denim Artist who doesn’t design denim bottom & shirting rather   ‘paints’ with denim . His painting canvas is very wide and rich from a map of London to people sleeping and homely interior scenes are all carefully crafted out of the same material as our jeans. It’s amazing how each work has been created in layers, giving them so much depth. The attention to detail is immense, even the sides of the paintings covered in denim. He covered all the basic daily activities through his denim eyes and its beautiful .

Berry uses denim waste to make small cuttings of denim and using this waste collection in his various paintings which sometimes take over few months to make one.  The pictures are so realistic as to make you believe that an image has been just given a indigo photoshopped ! Some pictures from his recent exhibition at London – Behind Closed Doors !  . Ian has been doing these paintings for years now and has a great collection of them though he has already sold many at real good prices !

Mexico’s economy has performed well relative to other major Latin American economies in recent years, largely because of its thriving manufacturing sector. Unlike Brazil and Argentina, whose manufacturing sectors are slumping, Mexico has continued to see solid growth because of its integration with and dependence on the U.S. market. Although low global oil prices will put pressure on Mexico’s economy, the performance of the manufacturing sector — especially in high-end manufacturing — will be a key driver of Mexico’s economic growth this year and beyond.

    Analysis:

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mexico underwent a profound economic and political reorganization. The economy liberalized, culminating in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Major state-owned companies privatized, transforming Mexico from a closed economic and political system into an export-oriented industrial economy. As a result, trade increased between Mexico and the United States, and a manufacturing belt sprung up at the countries’ shared border. From 1990 to 2000, Mexican trade became even more closely tied to the United States. In 1990, the United States accounted for 69 percent of all Mexican trade; by 2000, it accounted for nearly 80 percent.

But at the turn of the century, China’s special economic zones became cost-competitive alternatives to Mexican factories. Mexico responded by making more valuable products, such as automotive, aeronautical and electronic products. Thus, even though clothing exports dropped 43 percent (from $7.6 billion to $4.3 billion) between 2002 and 2012, automotive exports increased by 152 percent ($27.9 billion to $70.3 billion) and electronic exports increased by 73 percent ($43.3 billion to $74.9 billion) over the same period. Asian alternatives to high-end products notwithstanding, these Mexican products remained cost-competitive because of NAFTA.

Moreover, rising wages in China have once again shifted the equation in global manufacturing. Average manufacturing labor costs in Mexico are now almost 20 percent lower than in China, whereas in 2000, Mexico’s labor costs were 58 percent more expensive than China’s. All these reasons again make it comeback story for Mexico and we see a resurgence of exports to US including apparel. In this report we did a detailed analysis of Export of Denim Fabric By Mexico For the year 2015 and YTD June 2016 . We will see how Mexico how and where is Mexico exporting its denim fabrics and at what prices. Normally it is believed that US should be the largest market for Mexican denim fabrics. Is it so ? Maybe not !
