G Star Raw Pre Spring 2018 Collection

With continued innovation and research ,   G-Star Raw recently recently unveiled its pre-spring 2018 collection where the brand featured their latest styles in an installation and model format. The presentations added more curiosity ! . One room for each innovation was dedicated at their New York headquarters and name was given to each room :

    1. The Elwood
    2. The Denim Fit Zone
    3. The Innovation Zone
    4. The G Star Elwood X25II

Denim high waisted romper, military green jeans , sleeveless white denim jackets,  cigarette styled crumpled 3D jeans stood out.

This is visible in some of the styles — especially ones where 3-D design techniques are applied to flatter the body and strategically placed seams and pockets creates the illusion of a more narrow and slender figure. Innovation-wise, the brand has focused on researching the body’s movement, resulting in pieces with knit inserts, which allow for a more flexible pant or jacket.

PRPS Mud Smeared Jeans At Nordstrom Create Controversy !

Nordstrom started to sell the innovative PRPS muddy jeans for $425 . PRPS is a great brand and they come out with some very cool washes. However, Nordstrom was not ready for the kind of  adverse reaction on the social media.

    Muddy Jeans Nordstorm

Description on Nordstrom: Heavily distressed medium-blue denim jeans in a comfortable straight-leg fit embody rugged, Americana workwear that’s seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you’re not afraid to get down and dirty.

Some reactions on Twitter and other social media were harsh and very

    twitter

Even the mainstream media including Forbes, NYtimes and others have been critical and Nordstrom is drawing jeers for this product.

But to be honest , the product itself does not seem to be a problem. In fact , it is quite innovative. Speaking from strictly development perspective, it is actually a piece of washing art. The problem seems to be the pricing. At $425 and with connotations of a worker jeans, the reaction has been very adverse. Another aspect has been the very striking looks of the jeans / jackets where the mud looks very “In your face”.

The controversy might , however, hurt Nordstrom, which is already under pressure on various quarters. For the rest of us in the denim industry, we think the looks must be enjoyed and analysed for further creativity !

  • Denim Styles Which Are Cool For UK Consumers

Denim Styles Which Are Cool For UK Consumers

A report on Drapers analyses the proportion of fashion retailers’ style ranges and breaks down them into different styles they are carrying in Feb 2017 vs  those in Feb 2016.

The graph below shows the breakup of different styles stocked by different retailers.

    Women's Jeans Stocked

As can be clearly seen from the graph, Skinny jeans continues to dominate the women’s jeans stocked and hence sold. High waisted jeans , catching up on the rising trend in last 2 years, seem to be the distant second style in vogue. Slim fits , straight legs are other styles which may be considered to be slightly in demand. The report also mentions about hem details or cropped flare silhouette are in fashion whereas many brands like Citizens, J Brand, Paige etc offering released Hem Styles.

Also its interesting to look at the kind of styles Men are demanding and retailers are offering.

    Mens Jeans Stocked

Skinny jeans, which were a distant runner a couple of years ago are fast catching up with Slim fits and the most popular Straight legs seem to be loosing the race against these two in the latest fashion race !.

Market in UK seems to be driven by volume brands priced below GBP 60 with retailers like River Island and Top Man dominating the scene whereas the above GBP 100 range is clearly held by Diesel and other fashion brands like Replay.

In the two charts from the report, the % of women and men’s jeans details can be seen changing in last one year with maximum change in Men’s jeans details coming up with stonewashes and in Womens’ jeans Raw hem getting more important.

Smart Denim Jacket By Levis And Google

    vlcsnap-2017-03-14-11h46m41s886

Finally Its launched ! The most awaited smart denim jacket made by Levis in a collaboration with Google which is known as Jacquard by Google. Project Jacquard was first revealed at Google’s I/O development conference in May 2016. This futuristic jacket isn’t just designed to keep you warm – it’s an extension of your phone.  You can talk , you can find direction , you can even listen your favourite songs and many more and all these you can do just by a soft touch .

The jacket, which will cost around $350 when it goes on sale, according to an announcement at an interactive media event called SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, is the first commercial product containing ATAP’s Project Jacquard technology.

The Technical Aspect – How Does It Work

    • The smart denim has conductive fabric which turned a standard article of clothing into a connected device of sorts that can send instructions to your smartphone, like pausing or skipping a song that’s playing by double tapping your wrist. Interactive threads are woven into the denim, creating interactive panels that work like smartphone screens and arranged to form textured panels on the sleeves. Basically designed for urban cyclist , this Jacquard enables them to access navigation prompts and information on nearby places, change their music, and answer calls just by touching the jacket’s sleeve. Further , the data can be also sent wirelessly to smartphones or other devices, enabling actions such as making phone calls or sending messages with brushes of fabric.

    • A button size rechargeable Tag, comes in different colors and styles, which connects the conductive yarns in the jacket’s cuff to an electronic device. To wash the jacket , you need to remove the Tag from the jacket .

    • The jacket has some patches and once it will be touched , it sends signals wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet, via a detachable smart tag that clips to the cuff. This translates the hand movements into controls, so the sleeves respond similarly to a smartphone screen. A variety of simple gestures can be programmed to activate different commands, which the user can customise with an app.The textured patches can be programmed to respond to a variety of simple gestures.

“The jacket allows cyclists to control their mobile experience and connect to a variety of services, such as music or maps, directly from the jacket,” said the American clothing brand.

We hope the JACQUARD which comes out of  collaboration of Textile and Technology will surely be a successful product and add another milestone to the innovation drive of both the companies .
