Consumption Of Jeans In Sweden For The Period From 2014 To 2017

Sweden, with a small population of about 10 million has a comparatively decent market size of about USD 9 billion with the largest share of about 40% being that of women. Besides mens, Underwear and clothing accessories segments hold big shares in the apparel retail.Â Â Its home to denim brands like Nudie Jeans and global leader in apparel retail – H&M.Â Jeans are a staple product used by most population and are as commonly used by young as by old. But is the usage similar among both sexes ? We don’t think so as we found during our analysis of per capita consumption of jeans in this country.

1.Menâ€™s Jeans

The consumption of menâ€™s jeans in Sweden over the period 2014 was about 7 million pcs with the per capita of 1.5 which was about 70% of the total jeans consumption over the year 2014. However the consumption fell slightly in 2015 and 2016 was about 6 million pcs with per capita of 1.4 respectively for both years. It seems to have revived strongly in first eight months of 2017Â and was over 5 million pcs and if the same trend continues the consumption would likely be about 8 million pcs with the expected per capita of 1.6 at the end of the year 2017.

2. Womenâ€™s Jeans

The consumption of womenâ€™s jeans in Sweden over the period of 2014 was about 4 million pcs with the per capita consumption of 0.8 which was about 30% of the total jeans consumption. The consumption picked in 2015 and 2016 and continued the same in 2017 and it is expected that the consumption in 2017 would close at about 4.6 million pcs with an average of 0.9 jeans per person. This is significantly lower than the consumption of men’s jeans which are coming to about 1.6 jeans but the overall growth in consumption is higher for the ladies market.

3. Total Jeans

If we look at the total consumption , we find that the consumption has been showing an upward trend. While the years 2014-2016 were showed a growth of about 2-3% each year, it looks like that the consumption in 2017 might show a much larger increase. This is because both the men’s and women’s segment are showing increases in consumption.

Jeans Imports From Turkey Into EU For 2015 To 2017

Further to our last report on the import of denim fabrics from Turkey into EU, we bring the anaylsis on the jeans imported into EU from Turkey – one of its most important suppliers – over a period of 2015-2017 (Nov). There has been significant growth in such imports from Turkey in 2016 over 2015. Year 2017 has also been good for Turkey and the final figures including December figures might be satisfactory for the country which , inspite of increasing costs and high prices, has been able to create its own niche using advanced technology and skills , quick deliveries and logistics .

1.AllÂ Jeans

The imports of all jeans into EU from Turkey over the period 2015 was about 71 million pcs with an average price of Euro 13.6 / Pc, which saw an increase of about 14% to 81.28 million pcs with an average price of Euro 13.2/PcÂ over the period 2016. The imports of denimâ€™s for the first eleven months of 2017 was 70.85 million pcs and is most likely to go about 77 million pcs at the end of the year 2017.

The imports of menâ€™s jeans over the year 2015 was 34.78 million pcs with an average price of Euro 13.8/Pc which saw an increase of about 5 % to over 36 million pcs with an average price of Euro 14.4/Pc over the year 2016. The imports of menâ€™s jeans for the first eleven months of 2017 was 29.85 million pcs and if the same trends continues the imports is likely to beÂ about 32 million pcs at the end of the year 2017.

The imports of womenâ€™s jeans are a l higher with exports in 2015 at aboutÂ 36 million pcs with an average price of Euro 13.4 /Pc which saw an increase of about 21% to 44 million pcs with an average price of Euro 12.2/ Pc over the year 2016. The imports of womenâ€™s jeans for the first eleven months of 2017 was 41 million pcs and if the same trends continues the imports is likely to be about 44 million pcs at the end of the year 2017. So we see that the ratio of Men Vs Women jeans is about 45:55 with women’s jeans having the edge.

2. Menâ€™s Jeans

Men’s jeans have actually shown a comparative fall in 2017 over the 2016 figures. The final figures are not expected to be over 33 million pieces in 2017 which will be about 10% less than previous year. The spike in price in 2016 also did not carry forward to 2017 and the prices again came back to 2015 levels.

3.Womenâ€™s Jeans

Women’s jeans are showing stronger performance . With over 14% increase in 2016, the expected final figures for 2017 are expected to be similar as 2016 with a little growth. Thus women jeans seem to be carrying the day for Turkey as fast fashion gives them the edge with brands like H&M , Zara etc sourcing continuously from them for high quality products and quick deliveries. The prices , however, seem to be weaker than 2015 .

Imports Of Denim Jeans Into EU From Morocco | 2015 To 2017

Morocco has been one of the important exporter of apparel to EU for many years but it did not grow as much and could not perhaps take advantage of its duty free access to EU to full extent.Â However, in recent times , the country has been focusing again to make itself a fashion production hub . In 2016 its apparel exports to EU increased by 9% and it is now focusing on increasing jobs in the textile industry. Currently about 1,83,000 people are involved in the clothing industry in Morocco. AMITH – the textile union of the country wants to add another 100,000 jobs by 2020. The important point is that the whole growth plan is created by the industry constituents and not mandated by the govt . – making it more credible and achievable. Morocco considers Turkey to be its main competitor – with similar wages but with Turkey having a much larger textile base. However , the industry is hopeful of big growth coming as it enjoys many other advantages which many of its competitors do not.

1. AllÂ Jeans

The imports ofÂ all jeans into EU from Morocco for the period 2015 was 10.13 million pcs with an average price of Euro 12.8 / Pc, which saw an increase of about 30% to 13.22 million pcs with an average price of Euro 11.3 / Pc, however, the imports of denims jeans for the first nine months of 2017 was 9.75 million pcs and if the same trend in imports continues than the imports is likely to be about 13 million pcs at the end of the year 2017. So if we see there has been growth in exports from 2015 to 2017 specially keeping in mind strong competition from Asian countries.

2. Menâ€™s Jeans

The imports of menâ€™s jeans into EU from Morocco for the year 2015 was 5.75 million pcs with an average price of Euro 12.6/Pc , which saw an increase of 40% to 8.08 million pcs with an average price of Euro 11.2/Pc, however the imports of menâ€™s jeans for the first nine months of 2017 was 5.65 million pcs and if the same trend continues the imports is likely to be about 8 million pcs at the end of the year 2017. The imports of menâ€™s jeans into EU from Morocco for 2015 and 2016 was about 57% and 61% of the total jeans imports which shows that Men’s jeans are being exported in bigger quantities from Morocco compared to women’s jeans.

The imports of womenâ€™s jeans into EU from Morocco for the year 2015 was 4.38 million pcs with an average price of Euro 13.1/Pc, which saw an increase of about 18% to 5.14 million pcs with an average price of Euro 11.5/Pc , however the imports of womenâ€™s jeans for the first nine months of 2017 was 4.09 million pcs and if the same trend continues the imports are likely to be about 6 million pcs at the end of the year 2017. Further analysis shows that the imports of womenâ€™s jeans was 44% and 38% of the total jeans imports.

On the whole , we can see three clear trends :

The volume of jeans exported from Morocco to EU is increasing or is at least stable .

Consumption Of Jeans In Netherlands From 2014 To 2017

Netherlands is often called the Jeans capital of the world. The country is very “Jeans Savvy” with consumers very much conscious of the type and quality of jeans they wear. Besides, some of the most well know denim brands are headquartered at Amsterdam including G-Star,Â Tommy ,Â Pepe Jeans, Levis Vintage, Scotch & Soda , Denham- to name a few .The Jeans school by House of Denim enables more denim technicians to be created every year . Amsterdam Denim Days with Kingpins, Blueprint and City CenterÂ twice a year draws the best of denim fashionistas from around the world. Not to forget ,Â Amsterdam also hosts some of the best denim shops globally !

All these denim centric activites ensure NetherlandsÂ a very strategic place in global denim scenario. It also ensures that the denim consumption in Netherlands is quite high. Is it higher than or lower than US / Brazil / Japan etc which are considered the places with very highÂ per capita consumption.Â Well, lets see in the report below and prepare to be astonished !

Note: We have considered all kinds of exports from Netherlands and Imports into Netherlands before arriving at consumption figures. Production is negligible in Netherlands, so the same has not been considered.

1.Menâ€™s Jeans

First we will have a look at what is the status of men’s jeans consumption in Netherlands. Starting fromÂ 2014 we find that the consumption of jeans wasÂ 35 million pcs with a VERY HIGH PER CAPITA consumptionÂ 4.26 . This is an incredible figure and more than double of that in US (which is aobut 2 jeans per men) .This clearly shows that perhaps Netherlands has the highest consumption of men’s jeans globally.
This consumption fell byÂ 5% as the consumption fell to about 33 million pcs withÂ a per capita of 4.01 in the year 2015. However the fall was temporary and it again increased by 22% in 2016 to reach 40 mllion pcs .Â If we come to 2017, we find that the consumption of menâ€™s jeans for the first eight months of 2017 was about 23 million pcs and if the same trend is followed the consumption is likely to be about 35 million pcs at the end of the year 2017. It is also interesting to see that the consumption of menâ€™s jeans varies from 68% to 70% of the total jeans consumption for the three consecutive year from 2014 to 2016, and the same ratio in consumption is likely to be seen in the year 2017. This clearly indicates that Netherlands is primarily a men’s denim like Germany and unlike UK.

2.Womenâ€™s Jeans

We already know that this market is dominated by male jeans. Lets look at what females are upto 🙂 The consumption of women’s jeans is about 50% of that of men’s jeans.Â The consumption of womenâ€™s jeans for the year 2014 was about 16 million pcs with per capita of 1.94 ,which saw a decrease of about 6% to 15 million pcs with a percapita of 1.80 , further the consumption increased about 6% again to 16 million pcs with a per capita of 1.90 in the year 2016 . The imports for the first eight months of 2017 was 12 million pcs and if the same trend is followedÂ the consumption is likely to be 18 million pcs .Â Thus we see that the average consumption of women’s jeans in Netherlands is about 1.9 jeans approx in the last 3-4 years and expected to be more than 2 in 2017 end figures. It is much lower than men’s jeans but it is ACTUALLY MUCH HIGHER than most markets around the world. It is equal to US men’s jeans consumption – a figure which itself speaks about the kind of importance jeans holds in the minds of Dutch womenÂ !

When we look as a country , we find that the figures average out to certain extent but we still look at consumptions of more than 3 jeans per person per annum. This , we can safely say, is the HIGHEST PER CAPITA consumption of jeans around the world. We think that “JEANS CAPITAL OF THE WORLD ” is the right title for Netherlands when we look and understand the figures here. It also somehow gives more hope to the industry that there is a possibility that other markets may also see increase in consumptions down the line and pave way for the industry to grow.

a. All Denims Apparel

The imports of denims apparel to USA from Pakistan was 23.51 million pcs in 2016 with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.3 , out of which imports of mens jeans for the same periodÂ was 10.40 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.1 which accounted for 44% of the total imports . However the imports of womens jeans was 12.85 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.5 which accounted for 66% of the total imports in 2016 which shows that Pakistan exported more women jeans than men’s to US. Further, in the year 2017 , the total imports till sept 2017 was 18.76 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.8 out of which the imports of mens jeans was 8.20 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.5 which accounted to 43% of the total imports whereas the womens jeans contributed 57% of the total imports with 10.49 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 9.0. The figures for 2017 also show that Pakistan will be increasing its exports in 2017 over 2016 giving it a positive status in the US market.

a.All Jeans

The imports of Jeans to EU from Pakistan for the year 2016 was 102.48 million pcs with an average price (euro/pc)of 7.5 out of which the imports of mens jeans for the same period was 69.32 million pcs with an average price(euro/pc) of 7.6 which accounted about 68% of the total imports whereas the imports of womens jeans for the same period was 33.16 million pcs with an average price(euro/pc)of 7 .3 which accounted to 32% of the total imports for 2016. Thus the situation in EU is reverse. Pakistan exports more of MEN jeans to EU compared to WOMEN jeans. Further in the year 2017 the imports of all denims was 78.81 million pcs with an average price(euro/pc) of 7.5 out of which the imports of mens jeans was 51.37 million pcs with an average price(euro/pc) of 7.7 which accounted to about 75% of the total imports whereas the imports of womens jeans was 27.45 million pcs with an average price(euro/pc) of 7.1 which accounted to 25% of the total imports in 2017. If we extrapolate the figures of exports till September 2017, we will find that Pakistan might be exporting more than 110 million pieces of total jeans to EU in 2017 which would be 6-8% more than 2016. Thus there is a clear growth here also for Pakistan.

Women jeans are also cheaper at an average price of Euro 7.3Â compared to Men’s jeans price of about Euro 7.6. Thus men jeans are more costly and are being exported in bigger quantities as well.

Pakistan is enjoying a golden period when it comes to its apparel exports specially denim. As we can see from the figures above, Pakistan is able to increase its share in both US and EU markets inspite of there being stagnancy in these markets.Â The growth is likely to continue in the near future as well as the country consolidates its gains.

Import Of Denim Fabric From Turkey Into EU | 2014-17

Turkey is an Important player in the World Denim Industry and has been getting stronger after every passing year . Known for its best quality of denim fabrics, Turkey is still amongst the Top Sourcing Destinations for premium as well as mid priced denim segment. Turkey has a substantial hold in the European Market and in this report we have done a detailed analysis of fabric exported by Turkey to various countries in EU. The report shows which countries in EU have mainly imported denim fabrics from Turkey. It is also interesting to see that different countriesÂ in EU are importing different weights of fabrics . Some countries prefer higher weights while others prefer lower weight denims. Even within countries we see a changing trend within the years 2014-17. This signifies changing consumer preferences.

We start our analysis with the trend of weights of denim fabric imported by countries in EU over the years. Italy , initially imported more heavier weights of aroundÂ 11.+ Ounce/Sq.Yards , however over the years , the country is now shifting towards lighter weight and reached to the average weight of 10.68 Oz/Sq.Yards in 2017*. Germany is almost consistently importing an average weight of 9.4oz/sq yard fabric. However countries like Poland, Portugal and Spain are moving towards heavy fabric. Import Of Denim Fabric From Turkey In 2017* | Sq.Meters

In the year 2017*( During 1st nine months), a total of 19.53 million Sq.Meter of denim fabric was imported from Turkey into EU out of which 8.78 million Sq.Meter was imported by Italy at an average price of Euro 3.25/Sq.Meter. Italy lost its share by 2% more and reduced to 45% now. Germany is now giving tough fight andÂ Italyâ€™s loss has become now Germanyâ€™s gain. The share of Germany has reached now at about 21% . Spain again imported the fabrics at the least average price of Euro 2.14/Sq.Meter .Â Portugal , which was once a very important production center for jeans, has been consistently reducing import volumes and fell from 2.9 million sq mtrsÂ in 2014 to 1.1 million sq. mtrs in 2017.

While estimating the figures , we believe that 2017 is once again distressing for Europe so far as the import from Turkey is concerned. A total of 26 Million Sq.Meter denim fabric is estimated to be imported by the end of 2017 and following the earlierÂ trend , Italyâ€™s import figures will fall and those of Germany will rise.

Given below is a graph of comparison between three countries – Bulgaria , Greece and Hungary. We can see that Hungary imports the highest quantities from Turkey though its volumes have also reduced over the years. Still at about 3 million mtrs in 2016, it imports substantial volumes. Greece and Bulgaria are much behind Hungary and import miniscule quantities.

The Denim Import Of Mexico is not so encouraging as from the year 2016 , it has started declining . In the year 2015 , the total denim import was approx. 167 Million Sq.Meter which reduced to approx. 154 Million Sq.Meter in the year 2016. From Jan To August , 2017 , the total import is around 68 Million Sq.Meter which is being estimated to reach at 102.45 million Sq.Meter at the end of 2017 which is still 52 Million Sq.Meter lesser than what it was in the year 2016.

% Share Of Total Export From Mexico To Top 2 Countries From 2014-2017

China and USA are the two major exporters to Mexico in past few years and both have contributed over 75-80 % in the total fabric imported by Mexico . In the year 2014 , China and USA had about 35% share eachÂ in the total import made by Mexico. However,Â In the year 2016 , the share of China increased toÂ 54 whereas US share increased to about 37A% . In the first 8 months of 2017* , USA reduced its share whereas China increased a little.

DuringÂ the first 8 months of 2017 , Mexico imported 68.30 Million Sq. Meter of Denim Fabric out of which 35.20 Million Sq. Meter imported from USA And 27.00 Million Sq. Meter imported from China at an average price of USD 2.33/ Sq. Meter and USD 0.92/Sq. Meter respectively . Both Countries accounts 91.08% Share in total Imports . Import from Japan made at the most expensive average price i.e, USD 5.05/Sq. Meter. Chinese price of $0.92/sq mtr is incredibly low. But it has been known that a lot of fabric from China is undervoiced to avoid duties.

There is a very significant difference in prices of denim coming from US and from China. However, this is mainly due to the fact that US companies are selling at higher prices and their fabrics are not underinvoiced. However, its very difficult to find the right price of Chinese products as they under invoice their prices to avoid duties.
Another point needs to be kept under consideration. US is now losing all its mills with the closing of companies like DNA , Cone etc . Now only one mill is left and it might be a matter of time before it is also closed. This means more fabric will come into Mexico from other countries. Also Chinese might lose some market as their prices rise and under invoicing gets difficult.

Nine Months Of 2017 | Jan-Sept’17

The imports of denims for the nine months of 2017 into USA shows that the highest quantities still came from ChinaÂ with about 87.55 million pcs which was 30% of the total imports, followed by second largest imports by Mexico which was about 71.34 million pcs ie about 25% of the total imports . 21% came from BangladeshÂ with about 61.00 million pcsÂ . However, the least imports was made by Egypt and Cambodia which was about 12.08 million pcs andÂ 8.81 million pcs which accounted to 4% and 3% of the total imports respectively. Lets have a look at the figures below:

Â Nine Months of 2016 | Jan-Sept’16

When we look at the figures of 2016, we find that China was still at the top but with much higher figures. The imports of denims for the nine months of 2016 from China was highest with about 92.64 million pcs which was 31% of the total imports. The second largest imports was made by Mexico which was about 78.10 million pcs with 27% of the total imports. The third largest imports was by Bangladesh which was about 55.81 million pcs with 19% of the total imports .The least imports was made by Cambodia and Egypt with same quantity of 10.98 million pcs which was about 4% of the total imports.
However, when we compare with 2017 vs 2016 for total quantities of denim apparel imported , we find that in 2016 326 million pieces against 322 million pieces in 2017. This shows that the total imports remain almost same. However, within countries, the % share changed.

In the above graph we can see that clear losers are China and Mexico whereas clear winners are VIETNAM, PAKISTAN and BANGLADESH.

Italy Exports Of Jeans ( Men+Women) To Rest Of EU During Q1 â€“Q3 2017

Out of three quarters , Q2 was little disappointing for Italy . For both Men & Women Jeans , the export volume was down 18% and 31% respectively. The export figures of Q3 were very encouraging as in both segments , there was substantial growth.The Menâ€™s Jeansâ€™ export registered a growth of 27% while the Womenâ€™s Jeans grown by whopping 53%. During first nine months of 2017 , the total Menâ€™s Jeans Export from Italy to rest of the EU was 7.8 million pcs while the total Womenâ€™s Jeans stood at 5.3 million pcs. If the trend of nine months follows in the same way , the country would have estimated export of 10.4 million pcs of Menâ€™s Jeans and 7.18 million pcs of Womenâ€™s jeans by the end of this year taking the total exports to about 18 million pieces in 2017.

Italy Exports Of Jeans ( Men+Women) To Rest Of EU During January-September 2017

While analyzing the monthly trend of exports of both Menâ€™s and Womenâ€™s Jeans , we noticed that the month of July registered the highest volume in both segments with 1.04 Millions pcs and 0.85 Million pcs respectively. The month of April went disappointing for both segments due to the lowest export . During April , 0.573 Million Pcs ofÂ Menâ€™s Jeans exported while 0.373 Million Pcs of Womenâ€™s Jeans exported during the same period. Coming on Average price , Menâ€™s Jeans exported at the least average of Euro 24.86/Pc in the month of April however, In the month of September, Womenâ€™s Jeans were exported at the least average price of Euro 26.32/Pc. The highest average price for Menâ€™s Jeans during the first nine months of 2017 reached to the level of Euro 39.91/Pc however for Womenâ€™s Jeans, it reached to Euro 33.97/Pc.

Italy Exports Of Jeans ( Men+Women) To Rest Of EU During 2014-2016

From the year 2014 to the year 2016 , the journey was little up and down for Italy and failed to maintain the consistency. In 2014 , the total export of Menâ€™s Jeans by Italy to rest of EU was 10.07 million pcs at an average price of Euro 29.79/Pc . The total export of Womenâ€™ Jeans for the same period was 8.35 million pcs at an average price of Euro 28.44/Pc . Year 2015 took a dip and the exports of Menâ€™s Jeans decline to 9.58 million pcs and Womenâ€™s Jeans export dropped to 7.18 million pcs. Year 2016 brought some improvement in the export figure of Menâ€™s Jeans export however the Womenâ€™s Jeans dropped to the level of 6.99 million pcs which were exported at the highest average price of Euro 31/Pc . However, if we see as total, we will find that the number of jeans exported to European countries is between 16-18 million pieces each year. The year 2017 projection shows that the export of jeans might be 5-6% higher than 2016 which is good news for Italy.

On the whole, we find that Italy is doing great considering that it is the only important country in Europe still manufacturing jeans in large quantities. The volumes have not gone down inspite of economic troubles and troubles in the denim industry as well. The pricing of jeans is still at good levels compared to imports and women jeans prices seem to be rising over the last 3 years and are currently more than men jeans as an average.
