Colombian Denim Buyers In Aug-Sept. 2017

Colombia has been known for its innovation in the denim world and constantly investing its resources in R&D to bring new innovation in line with global trends. The country has over 12Â trade agreements which allows this country a preferential access to EU , Canada and Mexico . The country is under negotiation to sign a bilateral trade agreement with Japan and Turkey also. The country is demographically rich and thus enjoying the demographical dividend due to its proximity to Panama Canal which paves a smooth connection between the East Coast of the U.S. and Asia.

Further to our previous reports, we are providing here a special report on the buyers in Colombia who are importing denim fabrics from around the world. The contents of the report are as below :

Top 10 denim buyers Of Colombia DuringÂ August- September 2017Â

DuringÂ the month of August â€“ September 2017 , Top 10 buyers of Colombia imported 2.37 Million Sq. Meter of Denim Fabric out of which 495,857 Sq. Meter imported by Colombian Trade SA at an average price of USD 1.02/ Sq. Meter which is a very low price. StilotexÂ is the second biggest buyer which imported 399,522 Sq. Meter of Denim at an average price of USD 1.74/Sq.Meter. We must remember when we look at prices of imports into Colombia . Sometimes, they do not reflect the actual price as for custom duty avoidance , some buyers show less price than actual . Also since the prices are in sq mtrs, the actual price per mtr can be much higher if the width is 150 cm or more.

Top Denim Fabric Exporting Countries For Mexico During 2014-2017

With the reported GDP of USD 1.26 TrillionÂ , Mexico is the 15th Largest economy in the world and In Textile production, it has the fourth largest manufacturing activity in the country which includes the making of thread, cloth and decoration, in both natural and synthetic fibers. Around 415,000 workers directly employed in the sector out of which 74% worked for the apparel sector and remaining 26% worked for the textiles sector.The Textile Industry has not only become the major revenue and employment source but at the same time plays a significant role in the export sector.

Mexico is also a part of Important Trade Agreements as belowÂ :

NAFTA: Textile and apparel sector growth has been spurred on by NAFTA. It is by far the most important export market for Mexico sector. Mexico has been the key US supplier, ahead of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
MEXICO-EU FTA: FTA enables closer economic co-operation between Mexico and the EU. This will provide EU Companies preferential access to the major markets in North and South America through Mexicoâ€™s via extended FTA network.
MAQUILA PROGRAM: Mexico initiated its maquila program to encourage the development of export manufacturing industries by waiving import duties on capital goods and material inputs used in the manufacture of products for export.

Denim has been an important part of the textile and apparel industry in MexicoÂ . In fact , Mexico was the largest exporter of jeans to US before China came in . Even now substantial jeans are exported to US. However, in this report, we check out the denim fabrics exported from Mexico to different countries around the world. Mexico Denim industry is diversifying and had been growing stronger , having said that , the country has been facing some tough fight from Asian Countries . The Denim Export Of Mexico is not so encouraging as from the year 2016 , it has started declining . In the year 2015 , the total denim export was approx. 44 Million Sq.Meter which reduced to approx. 41 Million Sq.Meter in the year 2016. From Jan To August , 2017 , the total export is around 24.5 Million Sq.Meter which is being estimated to react at 37 million Sq.Meter at the end of 2017 which is still 4 Million Sq.Meter lesser than what it was in the year 2016 .After the debut of Mr President Trump in US Political system , NAFTA found itself into jeopardy. The final decision on this yet to come but the speculations arenâ€™t so in favor of NAFTA , according to sources.

% Share Of Total Export From Mexico To Top 2 Countries From 2014-2017

Nicaragua and USA are the two major markets for Mexico in past few years and share over 55 % in the total export of denim fabrics . In the year 2014 , NICARAGUA and USA had 39.15% , 16.23% share respectively in the total export by Mexico however In the year 2016 , the share of NICARAGUA reduced to 37% and share of USA Increased to 25.66 % . In the first 8 months of 2017* , NICARAGUA looked very strong with 45 % share and USA has also increased its share to 28.50 % .

DuringÂ the first 8 months of 2017 , Mexico exported 24.47 Million Sq. Meter of Denim fabric out of which 11.01 Million Sq. Meter to Nicargua And 6.97 Million Sq. Meter exportedÂ to USA at an average price of USD 1.77/ Sq. Meter and USD 1.79/Sq. Meter respectively to both countries . Both Countries accounts 73.50% Share in total exports . Export to Colombia made at the least average price i.e, USD 1.74/Sq. Meter.Other important countries for exports were Guatemala, Colombia and Dominican Republic.

2. Top 5Â Countries Receiving Denim Fabrics From Mexico In 2016

In the year 2016 , Mexico exported 41.62 Million Sq. Meter of Denim fabric out of which 15.47 Million Sq. Meter to Nicargua And 10.68 Million Sq. Meter exported at an average price of USD 1.78/Â Sq. Meter and USD 1.93/ Sq. Meter respectively to both countries . Both Countries accounts 62.81% Share in total exports . Export to Guatemala made at the most expensive average price i.e, USD 2.61/ Sq. Meter. Average Price of Ecuador is USD 0.02 / Sq. Meter which is not right and is a result of sheer undervaluation.

In the year 2014 , Mexico exported 36.85 Million Sq. Meter of Denim fabric out of which 14.42 Million Sq. Meter to Nicargua And 5.98 Million Sq. Meter exported at an average price of USD 1.90/Â Sq. Meter and USD 2.48/ Sq. Meter respectively to both countries . Both Countries accounts 54.38% Share in total exports . Export to USA made at the most expensive average price i.e, USD 2.48/ Sq. Meter.

So we see that Mexico tends to export its major denim fabric productions to either US or Nicaragua. Now with many denim garment companies in US closing down, we will find that the exports of denim fabrics from Mexico to US will reduce.

Jeans Consumption In UK , 2014-17

In this report we bring out the consumption levels of jeans in the UK in the last 4 years , from 2014-2017 . We look at how the jeans is being consumed by the Men/Boys and Women/Girls . Are their consumption levels increasing over the period or are we looking at a fall. Besides, are men consuming more jeans or is it the women .
We also find the PER CAPITA consumption of jeans in UK both for men and women.

Note: The data is sourced from various data agencies in Europe and we have accumulated the same to arrive at the figures.Â Â

1.Menâ€™s Jeans

The consumption of menâ€™s jeans in UK for the year 2014 was about 30 million pieces with per capita of 0.95 which was about 45% of the total consumption for the year 2014. Similarly , the consumption of menâ€™s jeans for the year 2015 was 30 million pieces with per capita of 0.93 which was about 48% of the total consumption , and that for the year 2016 was 30 millionÂ pieces with per capita of 0.92 which was about 41%of the total consumption. The consumption of menâ€™s jeans for the first eight months of 2017 was 15 million pieces and taking the population figure as constant the projected consumption at the end of the year 2017 was about 23 million with a per capita of about 0.72.
The figures show that the Men’s jeans market is falling in the UK. Per capita consumption has fall from 0.95 in per person in 2014 toÂ to 0.92 . The year 2017 does not look so good till August and if the trend continues, we are looking at significant fall in consumption of jeans in UK. In any case , it does not seem to be getting better in any way . It is to be noted that the consumption of womenâ€™s jeans is more than that of the menâ€™s jeans in four consecutive years from 2014-2017.

2.Womenâ€™s Jeans

Women’s jeans , however, paints a different picture altogether. We see a dramatic increase in the consumption of jeans in the UK by the fairer sex. Whereas about 38 million jeans were consumed in the UK in 2014 , we see the quantity continuously increasing to about 44 million pieces in 2016 and projected to reach about 47 million by the end of 2017. This is a significant growth of about 7% annual growth in the last 3 years . The per capita consumption has grown from 1.19 Jeans per person to about 1.42 jeans per person (expected) in 2017. This brings jeans consumption in UK by ladies/girls to be much higher than those of their male counterparts.

The lower consumption by Men brings down the average consumption of jeans in UK to about 1.15 jeans per person p.a in 2016 . Though its not a bad figure , but it needs to be remembered that German consumption is much higher than this . Best of luck to UK !

Germany is going strong on its demand for denim and in last 4 years has shown continuous growth in consumption numbers. We feel happy to analyse the denim consumption numbers for last 4 years and see how the germans are powering ahead . The report includes :

1.Mens Jeans

The total quantity of consumption of men’s jeans for the year 2014 was about 64 million pieces with an per capita of 1.60 which was 63% of the total consumption for the same year.Similarly for the year 2015 and 2016 the consumption of mens jeans was 69 millionÂ pieces and 73 million pieces showing a growth of about 10% in 2015 and about 6% in 2016. The consumption of mens jeans for eight months of 2017 was about 46 million pieces . We extrapolate till the year end and find that the consumption might touch about 70 million pieces. Though it might be little less than year 2016, we might have to wait for actual figures to come in as last quarter is generally the strongest.However, it is to be noted that the mens jeans consumption is more than women’s jean for consecutive four years from 2014 to 2017. The consumption at the end of this year might look to be getting little less than last year but last quarter is always a strong one and we feel that the actual figures might be higher.

2.Womenâ€™s Jeans

It is surprising to note that consumption of jeans of women is less than that of menâ€™s. It seems improbable but this is what the facts and figures bear out. The consumption of jeans by women in Germany is close to 1 jeans per person and this fluctuates a bit over the years. Last year was strong with a 5% increase in consumption over 2015 figures. This year seems like will close on similar kind of figures.

On the whole, Germany is a big market and a big consumer of jeans. With the economy doing well, the country is witnessing increase in consumptions at all levels and the same we can see in terms of denim.

German Agents In Denim Supply Chain

Germany is one of the most important market for denim in Europe . In terms of volume it is the biggest. There are large apparel retailers in this country like C&A besides many small ones. H&M is now considered to be second largest retailer in Germany . There are many value retailers who sell large quantities of apparel including jeans.

For such a large market , denim supply chain companies need to have the right representative who can work for them with the large buyers and get them business. Imports Of Denim Into USA From CAFTA For 2015- 2017

In this report , we did a detailed analysis of Import of Denim , which includes Denim Apparel for both Men and Women , into USA from CAFTA countriesÂ from the year 2015 up to second quarter of 2017. CAFTAÂ refers to a Free trade agreement between US and some of its small neighboring countries likeÂ Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, as well as the Dominican Republic. Trade between CAFTA countries and US was about $28 billion in 2016 and touched about $22 billion in 2017 till September.
Under the bilateral free trade agreement, the CAFTA-DR, qualifying U.S. yarns and fabrics enter the CAFTA-DR region duty-free. This duty-free market access allows for increased export opportunities for U.S. textile and apparel manufacturers. In addition, because the Agreement has no termination date, investment in the textile and apparel sector in the region is expected to continually grow, promoting increased trade and increased exports to the CAFTA-DR market. Besides, the yarns and fabrics produced in these countries will also ensure duty free access in the US.Â A relatively lesser known rule also allows Mexican denim fabrics upto 20 million sq mtr to be used under Cumulation rule. Besides, the SHORT SUPPLY PROCESS enables the body to decide if any of the fabrics can also be sourced from third countries in case of shortage of availability in these countries .

The imports of Denim Apparel to USA from CAFTA in the year 2015 was 20.70 million pcs , while the imports for 2016 was 13.38 million pcs which saw a drastic fall in imports of about 35 %. However, in 2017 the imports upto second quarter was 8.54 million pcs from which it can be assumed that the imports can go upto 17.00 â€“ 18.00 million pcs at the end of year 2017 . The average price however in three years did not see much change and decreased about 5 % from 2015 to 2017.

The imports of Menâ€™s Jeans from CAFTA shows almost the same trend as seen in All denim apparel . While the imports for the year 2015 was 15.55 million pcs , the imports considerably fell about 38 % and came down to 9.68 million pcs in 2016. However the imports upto second quarter of 2017 was 6.10 million pcs from which it can be assumed that the import can go upto 12.20 million pcs at the end of year 2017. The price decreased about 2 % over the three years.

Mexican Denim Exports To USA | 2015-2017

Mexicoâ€™s economy has performed well relative to other major Latin American economies in recent years, largely because of its thriving manufacturing sector. Unlike Brazil and Argentina, whose manufacturing sectors are slumping, Mexico has continued to see solid growth because of its integration with and dependence on the U.S. market. Although low global oil prices will put pressure on Mexicoâ€™s economy, the performance of the manufacturing sector â€” especially in high-end manufacturing â€” will be a key driver of Mexicoâ€™s economic growth this year and beyond.

Rising wages in China and cancellation of TPP have once again changed the equations and paved a comeback way for Mexico and and we see a resurgence of exports to US including apparel . 1. Import of Denim Apparels

The imports of all denim to USA from Mexico for the first six months of 2017 was 46.07 million pcs and if the same trend continues, the import is expected to be around 92 million pcs at the end of the year 2017 ,which may result in an increase of about 35 % in imports over 2016. However, the imports of all denims for the year 2015 was 110.92 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.7 which saw a fall of about 38%Â as the figures in imports for the year 2016 fell to 67.96 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.2 .

A. Menâ€™s/Boys jeans

Segregating the imports of all denims into both men and women to USA from Mexico, we see that the imports of menâ€™s/boys jeans was much more than the womenâ€™s/girls jeans for the three consecutive year from 2015 â€“ 2017. The imports of mens jeans for the first six months of 2017 was 42.76 million pcs and that of the womens jeans was 3.28 million pcs for the same period which shows that the import of mens jeans was manifold times more than the womenâ€™s jeans. However, the imports of menâ€™s jeans for the year 2015 was 101.74 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 8.5 which saw a fall of about 38% in imports as the figure went down to 62.96 million pcs in the year 2016.

The imports of womenâ€™s jeans for the first six months of 2017 was 3.28 million pcs .However, the imports for the year 2015 was 8.28 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 12.4 which saw a decrease of about 50% as the figures in imports went down to 4.84 million pcs with an average price(usd/pc) of 13.1 for the year 2016. There is an important development which could be seen in the trend of Average Price from the year 2015 to upto Q2, 2017 . The average price has been increased by USD 1.9/Pc during this period and reached to the level of USD 14.3/Pc which is somehow little alarming on Price Competitiveness .

The imports of denim fabrics to USA from Mexico for the first six months of 2017 was 3.45 mill. sq.mtrs .The imports of fabrics for the year 2015 was 6.32 mill.sq.mtrs with an average price(usd/lin.mtr) of 3.4 which saw a increase in imports of about 8% as the figure went up to 6.88 million pcs with an average price(usd/lin.mtr) of 3.0 for the year 2016. We have changed the figure of sq mtrs to lin mtrs with assumed width of 160 cm width.

International Fabric Buyers For Indian Denim

Asia is today taking center stage in global denim scenario whether you consider the production side or the consumption side. India is one of the most important country producing denim fabrics and exporting them. India stands second only to China in terms of production of denim fabrics and is also an exporter of the same though most of the fabric is consumed locally .

1. Imports Of All Denims To USA

The imports of denims to USA from Jordan for the year 2015 was 6.49 million pcs at an average price(USD/PC) 8.4 which saw an decrease in imports of about 30% as the figure dropped to 4.54 million pcs at an average price(USD/PC)of 8.2 in the year 2016. The average price(USD/PC) fell about 0.2 whereas the imports fell by 1.95 million pcs from 2015 to 2016. The imports of denims for the first six months of 2017 was 2.78 million pcs and if the following trend in imports is followed the imports is likely to be 5.56 million pcs at the end of the year 2017 which can be expect an increase of 22% than the last year imports of 2016.

Segregating the imports of all denimâ€™s to men and women to USA from Jordan, the imports of menâ€™s jeans for the year 2015 was nil. The imports for the first six months of 2017 was 0.01 million pcs and the imports is expected to be 0.02 million pcs at the end of the year 2017. 1. Imports of All Denim

The imports of all denim from ASEAN to USA for theÂ first six months of 2017Â was 18.90 million pcs and if the same trend is followed then the imports are likely to be aboutÂ 38 million pcs at the end of the year 2017 with an expectedÂ increase of about 24 % over last year figures. Looking at the imports for the previous years , in the year 2015, the total denim importsÂ was 48.74 million pcs with an average price(USD/PC) of 8.2, which saw a fall of about 38 % in the year 2016 . The early trends for the first six months looks positive but even if the same trend continues , it looks difficult to surpass the export figure of year 2015 which was a very good year.

2. Menâ€™s / Boys Jeans

Bifurcating the imports of all denims into both men and women, we observe that the imports of women jeans is relatively more than the menâ€™s jeans for the consecutive three years from 2015 to upto second quarter of 2017 . So far as the import of only menâ€™s jeans is concerned , 4.57 million pcs of denim apparels exported to USA in the first six month of 2017. If itÂ the export follows the existing trends , it might be possible to reach at the level of exports as it was for the year 2016. The average price for the year 2017 is marginally higher than the average price of 2016 . In the year 2016 , it was USD 8.6/PC which increased by 20 cents and reached to USD8.8/PC in the year 2017 .

3 Womenâ€™s / Girls Jeans

So far as the import of women jeans is concerned , 13.93 million pcs of denim apparels exported to USA in the first six month of 2017. If the export follows the existing trends , it might be possible to surpass the level of exports as it was for the year 2016. In the year 2017 , the average price isÂ USD 8.00 /PC which is a little more that what it was in year 2015 & 2016 .

On the whole, ASEAN exports more women jeans than men’s. This has generally been the trend of exports in these countries as well as in China .
