  • Exports Of Women’s Jeans From India/Bangladesh To USA – 2000:2009

    womens jeans denim

Women’s denim jeans has become more important than the Men’s denim in the recent years due to the fact that women’s jeans (as against men’s jeans) can accomodate almost all kinds of denim innovations within existing or new styles. Women are more fashion conscious than men and are prone to buy jeans on an impulse. It is not without reason that US consumes more of women’s jeans than men’s.

Let’s take a look at the exports of women’s denim jeans from India  and Bangladesh to US over a long period of time : 2000-2009 . We will also see the price changes that have taken place over this period. It would be interesting to compare the two as both are important apparel export countries from South Asia . However, Bangladesh has an edge over India because of duty advantages to Europe and US.

Imports Of Women’s/Girls Denim Jeans Into US From India 2000-2009

Year Quantity(million pcs) Value(Million USD) Av .Price (CIF Value) per jeans
    2000 0.67 6.14 9.13
    2001 0.70 6.86 9.86
    2002 1.18 11.28 9.59
    2003 0.88 7.87 8.98
    2004 1.06 8.77 8.30
    2005 1.98 16.31 8.24
    2006 2.59 22.46 8.67
    2007 2.93 26.12 8.92
    2008 4.55 35.37 7.78
    2009(Jan-Sept) 2.95 21.90 7.42
    Total 19.48 163.08 8.37

Imports Of Women’s/Girls Denim Jeans Into US From Bangladesh 2000-2009

Year Quantity(million pcs) Value (Million USD) Av. Price (CIF Value) per jeans
    2000 1.57 10.52 6.69
    2001 3.54 24.99 7.06
    2002 4.95 35.09 7.10
    2003 2.95 20.29 6.87
    2004 4.42 28.46 6.44
    2005 9.97 57.33 5.75
    2006 14.62 82.16 5.62
    2007 15.77 80.68 5.12
    2008 18.46 100.20 5.43
    2009(Jan-Sept) 16.28 85.92 5.28
    Total 92.52 525.6 5.68

It is interesting to note that though there was not much difference in the export quantity of the jeans from India and Bangladesh in 2000, Bangladesh now exports over 4 times the quantity of women’s jeans than India. However, India has the lead in price of almost 40%– though it has experienced a constant fall in average prices since the year 2000. But this price difference is also due to the reason that India does not export much quantity of basic 5 pocket jeans.

  • Denim Retailer Gap Posts Increased 3rd Quarter Profits in 2009

    denim jeans results

Adding to the constant inflow of positive news on denim sales, Gap reported 25% increase in profits as compared to the same quarter last year. The introduction of the low priced Premium Denim 1969 jeans seems to have done some good to the retailer and brought back some lost customers. Though denim jeans is not the only reason for increase in profits at Gap, but nevertheless, the performance seems impressive when seen against the backdrop of results of  two large denim companies : VF – which has seen falling profits and Levi’s – which has again seen its profits fall .

Similarly, the denim retailer Buckle reported a 14% increase in profits for third quarter  and reported an increase of average price of women’s denim jeans from USD 85 to about USD 92.40 – clearly showing that premium denim jeans is still hot !. Buckle caters to fashion-conscious young men and women and is known as a denim destination, with each store carries a wide selection of fits, styles, and finishes from leading denim brands, including the Company’s exclusive brand, BKE.

In the past few weeks, we have seen a number of denim companies and brands improving their profit margin including the likes of  True Religion (premium denim brand ) increasing their third quarter profits and Arvind ltd – a denim fabric and jeans manufacturer from India improving its profits.

  • Vintage Denim – At What Cost To Environment ?

    image

Readymade garment sector is booming world wide & specially in 3rd world countries, and garment processing has emerged as one of the important production routes towards meeting quick changing demands of the fashion market. In this article we look at processing of denim garments & its impact on environment.

Brands seeking to improve their environmental credentials can look beyond the use of organic cotton to a range of new products and technologies that lower the levels of chemicals, stones residue, rivets, buttons, hand tags, water and energy needed to manufacture denim fabric & garments.

The spread of denim culture, all over the world brought with it a trend of fast changing fashions. One after another, several washes were introduced such as stone wash, acid wash, moonwash, monkey wash, show wash, frosted wash, white wash, mud wash, distressed wash etc. Over the last 6-8 years, India has probably seen the most dramatic and exciting changes in the washing of denim garments.
Although the denim industry has long been known to be resource intensive, a full picture wasn’t known publicly until Levi Strauss & Co. shared results of its life cycle assessment on what went into making one pair of its iconic Levi’s 501 style.
Examining the 2006 production year for jeans headed to the U.S. market, Levi’s found that making one pair of 501s required almost 920 gallons of water, 400 mega joules of energy and expelled 32 kilograms of carbon dioxide. Levi’s said this was equivalent to running a garden hose for 106 minutes, driving 78 miles and powering a computer for 556 hours.

Faded, ripped scrunched and ‘distressed’ to the ultimate degree are very costly denim garments for well-known brands cost USD 100 plus for a pair! However, hot this distressed denim might appear on the runway there is an more depressing tale to tell apart from the overpricing, regarding the production of denim in general and the techniques and practices employed in the stonewashing and distressing process with various chemicals.

There are huge ecological and ethical concerns as this business is an enormous affair. To give an example , more than 520 million pairs of jeans are sold in USA alone each year. The majority of which will have been coloured with dyes, acid bathed, sandblasted and chemically doused to give the aged , worn in look we all so desire.

    • The life cycle of denim starts with the cotton boll, amid the vast cotton crops recorded as covering 2.4% of the world’s farm land. If not organically grown the valuable crops will be drenched in toxic pesticides to protect them from insects and weeds. Organophosphates are used which are poisonous and ultimately pass into the soil and reek havoc with wildlife.
    • Cotton fibres are spun into yarn and the denim yarn is "sized" using starch to give it strength and "mercerized" in caustic soda. Starch is biodegradable but if released into the rivers the microbes that devour it also consume the oxygen. This in turn kills off the aquatic life in the water as does the toxic caustic soda.
    • Other shocking facts are that it takes 1,500 gallons of water to produce 1.5 lbs of cotton needed to make one pair of jeans.
    • To achieve the correct blue shade, the denim in doused in vats of synthetic indigo. Environmental regulations are not upheld in many developing countries. Apart from the initial dyeing the stone washing or distressing of the denim is achieved by repeated washing and rinsing and bleaching, chemical blasting with such toxic substances such silica, dye stripped or bleached with potassium permanganate. All toxic to wildlife if let into the waterways and to the workers who breathe it in.
    • Very recently we came to know similar situation of untreated water was going in to rivers & waste was spread every where on streets in Lesotho. Worldwide many water sources and land are affected by untreated water from Laundries & Denim plants.

Is Anything Can Be Or Being Done To Control The Damage

    1. There are  many up and coming companies producing friendly denim using organic cotton and more eco friendly ways of distressing the fabric, such as using ozone to fade the denim It is the responsibility of the consumer to search these enlightened businesses out by checking for labels such as Fair Trade and Global Organic Standard certification and the Recycling logo.
    2. Some designers have solved the problem in another way by recycling old denim, naturally aged and worn by time, and re-styled and modelled it into new and inventive fashion designs. Denim seems to be an ongoing favorites on the fashion scene and as such needs to clean up its act totally to keep in step with the environmental and ethical requirements that are so rightly being put into place as a global fashion and textile effort.
    3. There are many eco friendly ways being introduced & keep coming. Reducing chemicals consumption and Stone usages , Enzymes being introduced in each process step.. desizing , Abrasion & now its being used bleaching enzymes also…. these are bio degradable products hence eco friendly. At fabric front Denim Mills started producing quicker wash down denim to have faster distress look with minimum efforts & usage of chemicals.
    4. Many chemical companies making their products keeping in mind the Global Restricted substances of toxic chemicals to produce environment friendly products. All most all leading brands started critical testing’s of their merchandise through third party testing for these banned chemicals.A large chemical company – Clariant – recently introduced a product – Advanced Denim – which it claims water usage by 60% during wash process.
    5. Recently one of the leading innovation company Jeanologia has Launched water free bleaching process machine, which works on OZONE called G2 technology , that produces various shades of denim using air technology as opposed to water and chemicals. According to the article, Jeanologia, the owner of the G2, estimates that if every company were to adopt their machine, the amount of water saved could supply the entire country of Spain with clean drinking water for 8 months. This machines saves water & energy both and has no impact on environment. clip_image001
    6. Buildinggreen.com is using denim waste to create cotton insulation products
      image

However, these steps are far few and make hardly any impact. It is only when the governments the world over realize the impact of denim that we will see real innovations towards creating products which will help in reduction of the same.

  • Levi’s India To Touch $100 million Sales Turnover

    indian denim market

Levi’s India, which had struggled to find its feet in the price concious Indian Denim market, is set to achieve a sales turnover of USD 100 million plus this year. It would make it the first international apparel brand to do so as ET reports .Besides another brand – Benetton – is also set to achieve the same feat .

Levi’s India plans to open over 800 stores by 2011 and it seems that the turnover is set to increase at a faster pace in the coming years  and it plans to take a larger cake of the existing $450 million organized denim market . However, it is to remembered that the organized denim market in India is much smaller than the unorganized denim market . However , with increased incomes with the youth, the organized denim market is growing at a fast pace of around 10-12%p.a . This is prompting other International denim brands  in India like Pepe Jeans , Lee Cooper etc to expand aggresively with Pepe Jeans itself wanting to add another 300 stores in the coming year. The local denim brands like Spykar , Flying Machine (Arvind Mills) etc are also creating an impact in the denim market.

  • What Is The Per Capita Consumption Of Jeans In USA ?

     per capita jeans1
USA consumes almost 30% of world denim jeans production. Being such a large market , the figures related to this market are generally of great interest. One such figure is that often surfaces in various news reports  is that of ‘ Per Capita Consumption of Jeans in USA ‘ ie how many jeans does every resident of USA buys on an average in a year..

I have seen that the figures that surface range from 1 Jeans per person p.a to 7 jeans per person p.a .. I thought it would be a good idea if we could arrive at a calculated figure which does away with the ambiguities related to this .

Now, the main point to remember is that almost all of the jeans consumed in US is imported from outside. Premium denim jeans are an exception as they are mostly made in USA. But though premium denim jeans are very important due to their high value, their share of the total volume of jeans consumed in US is quite low. So lets look at the figures below:

Imports Of Jeans Into USA in the Year 2008

      2007(million pcs) 2008(million pcs)
    Imports of Mens/Boys Jeans 273.94 292.00
    Imports of Women’s/Girls Jeans 249.55 269.53
    Production In USA
    (approx.)
      20.00    20.00
    Total Consumption 523.49 561.53
Population of USA 301 million 304 million
Per Capita Consumption of Jeans in USA 1.80 Jeans 1.91 Jeans

Note: Import figures are sourced from US Customs

The figures for production of Jeans in USA are an approximation and taken after considering various reports in this regard, though there are no authentic figures available in this regard. However, the production of jeans is a small percentage of imports and hence a slight variation (+ or –) will not make much difference.

These figures also clearly show that the consumption of denim jeans is on the rise in US as reported in various posts before here  ,  here and many other places. Just search the site and you will find some more reports in this regard.

I have done my best to put up the most updated figures. However, if any viewer finds any better figures , I would be most happy to update them here….:)

  • Denim By Premier Vision Dec 2009 Edition To Focus On Japanese Spirit Of Jeans

    pv copy

The next edition of the Denim Show – Denim By Premiere Vision – is due on Dec 2nd-3rd at Les Docks/Paris Saint-Denis and it promises to celebrate the Spirit Of Japanese Spirit Of Jeans..

    The show orgainsers say

” Denim by Première Vision now turns the spotlight on Japan. This leading player in the world of premium and selvedge denim inspires and fascinates the jeanswear world. A country of strong contrasts, where authentic handicraft, the cultivation of natural indigo, and an extreme approach to the hand-made juxtapose and are combined with the most advanced technology. It will provide a unifying theme to the decoration, displays and spirit impregnating the show’s 3 halls, for a dazzling “Tribute to Japan.”

Focusing on the Japanese Jeans as a theme is a very good idea and long overdue as Japanese denim industry has made a significant contribution to the denim world – whether it is bringing back vintage denim to the forefront or making selvedge denim popular .

Besides new exhibitors like Japanese denim producer Kurabo , more than 60 exhibitors from various denim sector professions like weaving , accessories, finishing and laundering etc are participating in the show. This seems a fairly good participation level and shows the continued strength  and optimism of the denim sector.Check out this link to find the  list of the participating companies.

  • Power Jeans On The Rise

      Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama

“Power jeans are increasingly common in high-ranking business and political circles. Indeed, jeans are now a legitimate part of the global power-dress lexicon, worn to influential confabs where the wearers want to signal they’re serious—but not fussy—and innovative”. This is what Wall Street Journal  says about powerful people wearing jeans – turning jeans into Power Jeans.Whether its the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev  coming to meet Obama or the French President Nicolas Sarkozy with his pretty wife, all appear powerful and relaxed in Jeans.

Gone are the times when jeans were considered very casual and non-serious. Today, jeans worn properly can reflect that a person is creative ,non-fussy and sometimes even powerful. No surprise that in IT industry jeans are not only well accepted , but  even promoted by tech icons like Steve Jobs of Apple  who is considered by many as the Marlon Brando of his time. So much so that one senior executive of a well know Tech company says about jeans:

"When someone shows up to an interview or meeting in anything other than jeans, it shows inexperience and a lack of confidence,"

    image

However, there are still sectors (in US) which look at jeans with suspicion – Banking, Law,Accounting Firms etc. However, this would differ from country to country  as popularity ,acceptability and penetration of jeans changes from region to region.

But generally speaking, there are lot of No’s of power jeans if you want to get it right :

    • No Skinny Jeans
    • No Distressed Jeans
    • No Embroideries
    • No Baggies
    • No high rise or low rise
    • No Acid washes
    • No Bootcuts ,shorts etc
    • No holes

To get the power jeans right , try the Yes’s !

    • Dark washes
    • Straight fits
    • Pressed shirt and good shoes with jeans

And if you want to look really creative , do what Steve Jobs does – wear Jeans with Black Turtles!
