Mission Blue : Create Denim For The Future With Care For People And The Planet

Continuing the tradition of focus on Sustainability,  the second edition of Denimsandjeans Vietnam witnessed a very important Panel Discussion :” Mission Blue- Create denim for the future with care for people and the planet “  on June 7 at the Gem Center , Ho Chi Minh City . The objective of the panel discussion  was to bring out the new initiatives G-Star is taking alongwith their partners to make their products much more sustainable. G-Star has already set a target to go use sustainable materials in all their products by 2020 and it was in this context that the presentations and talks by Sara Fressler ( G-Star) , Dreszig Christian ( Bluesign) and Myra Opena (Saitex) became very interesting for the denim community to attend or view. The panel discussion was moderated by Mr Bill Watson – the MD of Coats Vietnam.

G Star Raw | Ms Sara Fessler

Ms Sara , the RSL/Environmental Specialist from G-Star, brought out a detailed presentation explaining why we are not sustainable today in denim production and how G-Star aims to achieve sustainability in their processes by 2020. She stressed on the fact that G-Star works very closely with their supply chain partners to achieve this goal . She also mentioned that G-Star has partnered with BLUESIGN , a solution provider service company which is working with an objective reduce the environmental impact of the entire textile and related supply chain and shift towards a resource conserving production , to achieve this goal. Here are some excerpts from her presentation.

SUSTAINABILITY – THE FUTURE IS RAW

Let’s check some facts which will make you feel strongly as to why SUSTAINABILITY is so important now .

    1. It takes over 3000 Liters of waters to make a single pair of jeans.
    2. 6% of the world’s pesticides is used for cotton cultivation.
    3. By wearing jeans 10 times before washing, consumers can reduce the environmental impact by 75%.
    4. 50% of China’s rivers are polluted by industrial effluent.
    5. Around 5% of all waste on landfills is textile.
    6. Garment factories in Bangladesh employ around 4 million people.

    G-STAR RAW RESPONSIBILITY

According to G Star , Responsible Supply Chain,Sustainable Product ,Sustainable Operations and Community Involvement are four pillars to the corporate responsibility and G Star has been strengthening all these pillars equally to achieve its objective . In the past , the company has taken some initiatives in order to achieve the sustainability and they are :

    DETOX

On July  2011, Greenpeace published their 1st Dirty Laundry Report in which they pointed out the problem of toxic water pollution resulting from the release of hazardous chemicals by the textile industry in China. As part of the investigations, Greenpeace also uncovered links between these polluting facilities and a number of major clothing, fashion and sportswear brands. The company is committed to achieve such production facility which could minimize the level of pollution . The company is  actively working together with their suppliers on various innovative dyeing and finishing processes, including ozone bleaching, laser treatments and natural tanning of leather, that have a reduced environmental impact. In 2013 , they achieved free of APEO containing formulation and free of Phthalates for all garments and accessories. In 2015 , further they managed successfully a free of PFC (perfluorinated chemistry) for water repellent finishes and in August  2015 , G-Star Raw successfully partnered with a denim mill to become a Bluesign® system partner and the first bluesign® approved Denim fabrics from CALIK denim  were made available in the market.Target on first bluesign® product Jeans. In coming years , By the end of 2017, the company is targeting to make all their garments by sustainable wet processing .

    100% SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS BY 2020

G-Star works towards a fully sustainable collection. As a Made-by member since 2012 they have found an independent organization for verification. In January 2012,G-Star joined the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Group. In March 2013 G-Star became  the 1st denim brand to join Bluesign® and are convinced that with respect to a chemical management, bluesign® is providing the solution for a fundamental and solid system that achieves input stream management.

    RESTRICTED SUBSTANCE LIST

G-Star’s RSL is running a strict monitoring program on Restricted Substances on finished products and also implementing the Manufacturing Restricted Substance List to eliminate at the beginning of our supply chain. The company is strictly abiding Environmental rules, regulations and standards applicable to the workplace.

    BLUESIGN | Mr Christian Dreszig

Founded in 2000,Bluesign is a solution provider service company which is working with an objective reduce the environmental impact of the entire textile and related supply chain and shift towards a resource conserving production. The company has 500 system partners worldwide and its HQ located in St.Gallen / Switzerland and Offices in Germany, USA, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong.

At the second edition of Denimsandjeans Vietnam , Mr Christian from Bluesign shared his views through a presentation as to how  his company is contributing towards making the manufacturing process more sustainable . Some excerpts from his presentation.

What does denim for the future with care for people and the planet mean?

Explaining the above , he mentioned three core ingredient of Sustainability which are as follows :

    1. Ecology : Environment, Water, air, soil, climate, CO2, chemicals management
    2. Social Responsibility : People, stake holder relations, wages, working time and conditions, labor age, employee motivation, customer satisfaction
    3. Economy : How to finance social responsibility and environment protection profit, investments

Mission Blue | G Star Saitex and Bluesign | Denimsandjeans

What are the challenges to produce sustainable Denim?

Christian believes that there are many challenges to produce a sustainable denim in the 21st century where the consumer behavior is very dynamic and tends to change every now and then. Consumers want to adopt the latest fashion and so the producers need to manufacture accordingly . Either its Autumn Winter , Spring Summer or Fall or whatever , the fact is that its all about fashion which is being changed and it has been changing very fast . Consumer want new effects , wash , distressed and new designs to look class apart . But grim fact is that all these effects need chemicals which is not so good for the environment and this is what which defeats the purpose of Sustainability. Lack of information and limitations of sample testing and physical control are some of the other major challenges .

Mission Blue | G Star Saitex and Bluesign | Denimsandjeans

How we manage impact on denim manufacturing?

Bluesign does it in four ways :

    • Input Stream Management
    • Chemical Assessment
    • Company Assessment
    • Resource Productivity

The bluesign system is like nothing else from the above mainly for the reason that it is, a system and not a methodology based upon a snapshot in time or reliant on the often ineffective randomness of self reporting Bills of Substances, MSDS, and/or testing at the end of a process. Further, since it operates as a closed system all the way back to where the actual molecules are created, it prevents significant “loopholes” that might arise when simple tests or audits are cobbled together to produce a piecemeal approach to chemical integrity.

The bottom line is that the only real way to ensure the output you desire is to manage the input that you need.

SAITEX | Ms Myra Jena Opena

Ms Myra Jena Opena from Saitex presented a very insightful video which primarily talked about as to why Sustainability is the need of hour and as to how Saitex is contributing to the Sustainability and Social Responsibility through its own way . Saitex is one of the best denim factory in the world and Myra explained the initatives Saitex has taken towards sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The video by Saitex explains all but some of the interesting ones to note were :

    • Air drying jeans  and using solar power to save energy .
    • Recycling the water , heat and steam in the factory
    • Using denim scrap to create a new denim shoes brand.
    • Aiming to farm organic cotton.
    • Using 1% of revenue to alleviate hunger and poverty besides building homes for homeless and planting trees to reduce carbon footprint

Most  of the initiatives Saitex has taken have been made on their own accord without any external requirements and the company aims to add further initiatives down the line. Besides Saitex has also partnered with Bluesign and is geared to achieve the requirements of G-Star sustainability goals.

Mr Bill Watson in his concluding remarks stated that the consumers have been always smart but they always didn’t had the voice that they have it now and with the  social media and other digital platform they have started speaking on every substantial issue which is disturbing or heartwarming .

According to him what Bluesign has been doing is proactive not reactive and they are using a new approach from back end testing to front end testing and is actually giving an option to the consumer to decide in which side they would like to be, with the technology which is taking care of planet or with the rest

Following their custom to keep the exhibitors list premium and limited, this time the organizers are more focused to bring new buyers from Europe and USA at their show. The show has always attracted the attentions of Global Retailers and Buying houses along with the local Garment Factories and buying houses.

Informative and engaging seminars on the latest trends and innovations have been always an attractive knowledge transfer platform at this show. Global Denim Experts from Europe and USA are expected to present couple of seminars on both days.

    DENIM HYGGE

Consumers are going in and touching the fabrics now, cozy and HYGGE are big words. It’s the idea of feeling comfortable and burrowing away; anything that has texture, like cashmere, corduroy. The ’70s trend falls right into that, color palettes feeling very from the earth, yellows, and reds and brown, so the opposite of a technical fabrics, it’s a fabric that’s been around for forever.

With series of successful international denim shows, the organizers are hopeful of a great response on this show as well.  Before the Bangladesh show,  the organizers will also host the first International denim show in India as well on September 25-26 at The Hotel Ashok, Bengaluru. Detachable Jeans | Oh No !

    Collage_Fotor

Another crazy style of jeans  has come up which makes the jeans be unhooked just below the crotch and transformed into skimpy hot pants in seconds.
We’ve all been there – it’s a chilly morning so you pop on a pair of jeans. But the heat just pop us from nowhere. And then the urge to reduce the jeans size turns into reality !

    Image result for detachable jeans

Maybe that extra spot of ventilation will come in handy during those hot, humid summer months. If you’re feeling extra bold, you can detach the legs of the jeans and wear them as denim shorts.

    detachable-leg-jeans-2.jpg

The jeans fasten together just below your crotch and under your bottom – leaving a clear flash of skin on display at all times.

The jeans, available at Opening Ceremony. The jeans come in two shades – acid-wash and black – and are described as “a straight-leg silhouette with slim-fitting, detachable shorts that feature high-rise cutouts along the front.”  But seriously who would want to wear this kind of jeans ? Do you really feel an urge to take off half of your jeans in summer ? We think it adds one more style to the list of crazy and unwearable jeans that we have seen lately in an effort to RUIN THE JEANS ! . Social media too did not react favorably .

One Twitter user wrote “What the hell is this monstrosity?”!

And the other said “These are on fleek. Especially when you take the legs off and you have denim adult nappies.” .

We feel that such eye grabbing pics of jeans take social media space for sometime and fade out . Not something that can sustain a market !

  • Ruining The Jeans | How Far It Is Correct?

Ruining The Jeans | How Far It Is Correct?

It’s official: jeans in 2017 are getting weirder by the week in this year.  First came Durex jeans, and then last week a collaboration between French fashion brand Vetements and Levi brought us bare butt jeans. Now, half-leg jeans are trying to enter the fashion fold.

    bare butt jeans

Just when it seemed like 2017’s denim trends couldn’t get any more out of control, Vetements introduced arguably the craziest look yet: bare butt jeans. In case you were wondering, it is exactly what it sounds like  jeans that show off your bare butt or whatever cute underwear you have on underneath. Levi’s brought us bare butt jeans but strangely they don’t want people to ruin denim !

Why bare butt jeans? It’s part of Vetement’s on-going collaborations with 18 iconic brands to give well-known styles a modern makeover.

Social media users took to Instagram to share their state of confusion:

    “Are you serious?” one wrote.

“Please tell me that is a joke?” another posted.

And one user highlighted a possible danger involved with wearing them:

“Too dangerous, imagine if that zipper got stuck to a metal patio chair?,” they said.

We have a feeling this style may be totally ignored.

“This is tight, this is different. I’m for it,” said another.

Wherever you stand on the trend, it’s decidedly not an everyday look.

American singer and actress, Ryan Destiny, currently starring in Fox’s drama series Star, showcased the new style at Coachella in California.

Wearing a black bodysuit saying ‘Ready For Trumpocalypse’, the singer paired it with a half-leg pair of jeans – complete with a black belt and boots. WIERD!

    Trumpocalypse jeans

    Trumpocalypse jeans

Kendall Jenner recently stepped out in a pair of ‘jeans’ that seemed to be missing the legs in entirety – yet  had seams and cuffs around her feet. This look arguably made Destiny’s half-pants look seem more logical.

    INSIDE OUT JEANS

    Image: Barneys New York
True to the name of the jeans, the straight-leg blue cotton blend denim trousers look as if they’ve been turned inside out, with details like seams and interior pockets exposed. While details like these are often tucked away, the Inside Out Jeans draw attention to them, especially with pockets that are printed with sayings like: “To create something new, you must first destroy.”

    inside out jeans

They’re called ‘Clear Knee Mom Jeans’

Knee-paneled jeans are example of complete and utter fashion craziness. There seems to be no logical connection between a pair of jeans and panels of plastic stitched to them.

    knee paneled jeans

In review, it seems that designers, just to gain attention , are pushing the envelope where the jeans designs are concerned to gain attention. But real fashion does not come from such aberrations and can only be a result of hard work and innovation combined to give users a better value through the looks and comfort.

Seamless Denim Quilted Jacket By Santoni And Tencel

Santoni, a leading Italian manufacturer of a wide range of circular knitting machines and  co-operates with Lenzing Fibres, a producer of Tencel branded fibre, in a new denim project.

The previous co-operation with Lenzing focused on the knitting of a new one-piece denim garment that would fit the modern rapidly evolving lifestyle. “This just-in- time semi-finished garment was tailored for the ever fast-changing fashion world. The idea of innovative knit denim as a contrast to the traditional woven denim fabric highlights the product concept as it combines denim’s soul with sportswear’s athleisure performance features,” the company explains.

    Mec-Mor CMP knitting machine

The new project concerns the knitting of an innovative denim double-face quilted fabric produced by Santoni’s double jersey circular knitting machine, the Mec-mor CMP, and Lenzing’s Tencel fibre. The Mec-Mor CMP, with open variable panel (Variatex technology) is a circular knitted garment length machine complete with rib border separation.

    Denim Quilted Jacket | Denimsandjeans.com

With unique finished looks, one single machine can produce all sizes without wastages, thanks to the variable width of the fabric panels that allows the exact number of working needles to be selected for the required size of product.

The totally reversible quilted jacket knitted on the Mec-Mor machine is Seamless . The border is not sewn as it is integrated into the fabric panel, as well as incorporating the pockets. It is a double-faced jacket that can have various patterns and logos directly knitted into it by the machine. These designs have a very high resolution thanks to the fine inherent GG 20 characteristics.

    Tencel fibre

Tencel is the sustainable lyocell fibre derived from wood pulp. According to the manufacturer, only wood from certified or controlled sources is used to make Tencel using a closed loop production system. This fibre production process is eco-friendly and has received numerous certifications and awards including the European Award for the Environment and Oeko-Tex.

    Seamless denim quilted jacket

The new totally-reversible seamless denim quilted jacket produced on the Santoni machine aims to provide greater comfort due to its dedicated areas of increased fit and well-being as determined by the use of embedded indigo Tencel fibre and elastomers to give higher elasticity and flexibility.

The multi-layered seamless knitted panel consists of three layers of different yarns with a reverse use. The resulting quilting effect is obtained directly on the machine by specific stitches that hold the two layers of fabric, together this produces a thickness in the fabric, so creating a quilting effect which increases the profile of the relief when compared to the rest of the fabric, giving a unique change in its texture.

Need Supply 1996 Denim Vintage Collection

Before Need Supply Co., they were Blues—a tiny retail shop in Richmond, Virginia stocked with 300 pairs of vintage jeans and a dream bigger than their square footage. Now, more than twenty years later, they are throwing it back to their roots with a denim capsule that recreates the iconic style that first inspired them.Nostalgic, Effortless and Modern and that too with ‘90s indigo wash with gold stitching and silver hardware are adding more zing to this Vintage Collection.

“I’m drawn to the idealism and innocence of the beginning. That youthful sense of discovery so synonymous with hunting for the perfect pair of vintage jeans, before the internet, before you knew what you were getting into.” — Creative Director Gabriel Ricioppo

For The Denim Jacket, they focused on creating a sleeker design and slimmer silhouette for everyday wear—Basically, exactly what you want your vintage jacket to look like, except less boxy and without that undeniably funky thrift store odor. The looks are plain vanila compared to the distressed collections of the day . But yes, the plain salt and pepper looks are back in demand and the label tries to recreate the same.

The Transformation Of The Jeans Industry Begins By Measuring The Consumption Of Water | Jeanologia

This article has been written by Begoña Garcia from Jeanologia Global Sustainability Brainbox where she speaks about the processes Jeanologia developed for reduction in water usage in the jeans washing industry.

Approximately 10 years ago, I was asked to work on a new project in Jeanologia. It was a requirement of the project that we should know exactly how much water was needed in order to finish a pair of jeans in a commercial laundry. I decided to start by researching data from official sources. However, it quickly became clear that there was very little information available on this particular subject. My option was then to call some friends and associates; experts in the laundry industry, who I was fortunate enough to have met and worked with. To answer my question accurately, they first needed a few more details relating to the kind of washing processes involved. Was it a simple rinse wash? A stone wash? A light, medium or a heavy bleach? Once armed with the correct details, they all went through the mental arithmetic process to calculate the amount of liters they would require per garment. All of them stressed the fact that this was approximate data and that the ‘correct’ number in the end depended on many different factors. The most curious thing that came out of this exercise was that, depending on the geographical area the laundry was operating, for the same type of wash process the answer supplied could be different by a factor of 50% or more.

This exercise was extremely useful for us to understand that the optimization and use of resources such as water and energy in the laundry was not an easy task. The exercise also demonstrated that not even industry experts had a ‘real feel’ about the quantity of water they were using in their processes. However, the most important finding was to reveal that the usage of water, our most precious resource, was being use in an excessive and disproportionate way in the laundry industry.

World Water Day | Jeanologia |Denimsandjeans.com

This prompted more questions than answers in my mind.

    1. How could we plan to reduce water consumption if we were not able to measure how much we were using in the first place?
    2. How could we make decisions on how to address the problem if we were not able to quantify how big the problem was?
    3. How could we assess what defined actions would lead to the objectives set? How could we create awareness to motivate reflection and improvements on this area?

The lack of answers to all this questions encouraged us to develop an easy-to-use tool that would allow for the measurement of a garment finishing footprint, and to know, among other things, the quantity of water that was being used to finish each pair of jeans produced in the world. And this is how our EIM (Environmental Impact Measuring software) was born. If there is no measuring there is no improvement.

Thanks to this comprehensive and easy-to-use tool, companies like H&M, Jack & Jones, Mark & Spencer, Lindex among others, can today, without hesitation, answer the question about how much water are they using in their jeans production. This data is absolutely necessary to analyze, set objectives, define actions and accelerate transformation of an industry to reverse the negative impacts of the past.

H&M sustainability report: “Since 2014, we have expanded the scope of the Conscious hang tag to also include products that are made using the most innovative technology to reduce environmental impact in the continued production. For example, since 2015, all of our denim production is covered by a tool developed by the sustainable denim experts at Jeanologia. This helps us measure, set targets and reduce energy and water use for our wash processes. A benchmark for our denim washes is planned to be in place in 2016.”

World Water Day | Jeanologia |Denimsandjeans.com

Phil Townsend, Sustainable Raw Materials Specialist at Mark & Spencer: “M&S recognizes EIM software as combining the benefits of sustainability and innovation. That is why we have been working with our denim suppliers to use the EIM software and understand the amount of water, energy and chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Not only can we measure the impact of the wet processing of our denim products, we can also look for ways to reduce that impact whilst still offering our customers fashionable and desirable product.”

Anna-Karin Dahlberg, Production Support Manager at Lindex: “When starting the development of our Better Denim assortment with the aim of producing our denim in the most sustainable way, Jeanologia was the natural partner to work with. With their expertise and the EIM tool we have been able to reduce the environmental impact without compromising on fashion. At Lindex we have an ambition to be a water responsible company, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with Jeanologia to become even better.”

World Water Day | Jeanologia |Denimsandjeans.com

Today on World Water Day, not as part of the Jeanologia team but as a consumer and mother, I would like to thank the people within these brand and retailers for their genuine commitment to reduce water consumption in the jeans manufacturing. I also would encourage them, their suppliers, our customers and of course my colleagues to keep working resolutely in this direction. We have been able to demonstrate thus far that it is possible to produce both beautiful and comfortable jeans using minimal amounts of water. We still have lot of work to do, but I feel we all, together, are working in the right direction.

Begona Garcia | Jeanologia Begoña Garcia, Jeanologia Global Sustainability Brainbox

After a research scholar ship in France, she started her professional carrier at a Benetton dyeing house in Barcelona and move in 1997 to Valencia to join Jeanologia .
She has been leading various projects within Jeanologia for different companies of the textile supply chain from fiber producers to brands like,

    • Sewing and garment finishing manual for a multinational fiber manufacturing company.
    • Creation of Production guidelines to solve the technical difficulties in garment manufacturing using stretch denim, contributing to the industrial feasibility of a new   revolution in women’s jeans.
    • Training programs for designers and industry professional on garment finishing techniques.
    • Solving out in house production problems and establishing working systems in various laundries around the world.
From 2008, she has been working to build up a more sustainable garment finishing industry and created EIM (Environmental Impact Measuring software), a specific tool for laundry to measure the environmental impact of laundry processes.Nowadays, she is helping Jeanologia to promote into garment finishers and industrial professionals the use of Jeanologia technologies as key elements towards a more sustainable denim finishing industry.

38 Graph showing trend analysis of Denim Exports To EU by Top five Countries

Starting the analysis with the analyzing the export trends of two big giant denim exporters – Bangladesh and China . Looking at the Men’s Denim Category , In the year 2000 ,China exported merely 1.13 million Pcs against the whopping export of 11.71 millions pcs by Bangladesh .  [private_special] After five years , China Surpassed Bangladesh with 44.63 million Pcs but the tragedy is that in 2015 years It was left miles behind Bangladesh. In 2015 Bangladesh exported 109.09 million pcs while China exported only 36.18 million pcs. The same trend continues in 2016 and Bangladesh is still way beyond China with 115.485 million pcs (estimated).

In the Women’s Denim Category China had been doing comparatively better before 2015 . But after 2015, there is a massive downfall in the export quantity. In 2005 the export quantity was 87.92 million pcs which dropped to 57.12 million pcs in 2015. However Bangladesh has been doing exceptionally well in both the category during these periods and is expected to do much better in the coming years.

In the year 2000, It was Hong Kong which was leading the charts in terms of export quantity of Men’s Jeans to EU with 62.24 million pcs in a year, Hong Kong was at the top followed by Turkey and Tunisia with 33.68 & 14.57 million pcs respectively. Other countries like Morocco and Bangladesh accounted for 10% and 8 % in the list .The average price is not so much relevant for the analysis as that period substantially run under quota system and prices were grossly understated or overstated.

It is ironic to note that women’s jeans were a small fraction of the quantity of men’s jeans. Eg while Men’s jeans exported by HK were 62 million pcs, the women’s jeans exported were only about 4 million pieces – not even 10% of men’s quantity ! . This clearly shows how skewed the markets were in favour of men’s jeans in that period.

Turkey was the third and accounted for 21% of share in the list however looking from the perspective of average prices, Turkey seemed pretty expensive with Euro 10.45/Pc. China is the least expensive and Tunisia is the most expensive in the list.

It is again noteworthy that the women jeans were still much cheaper than the men’s jeans.

The equations again changed in 2015 . Bangladesh became the new king in the EU Denim Industry and exported whopping 109.09 million pcs of Men’s Denim while China who had been ruling so far , dropped at number 3 with 36.18 million pcs and left with only 14% share to the list . Pakistan exported 63.96 million pcs at the average price of of Euro 7.93/Pc.  We can also see Turkey climbing up again and coming close to Chinese figures which is commendable.

Top 5 Denim Exporters To EU- 2016(August)

Year 2016 is reasonably good for the denim industry however still the Industry has not been much improved in terms of business. The global depression and adverse growth in demand as well as in purchasing capacity have been affecting the industry very badly. Industry is growing but if we look at the real growth rate , its not that good . In the year 2016 , till the month of August , Bangladesh Exported 76.99 million pcs of Men’s Jeans at an average price of Euro 6.28/Pc. In the Women’s Jeans category , Bangladesh exported 59.08 million pcs at an average price of Euro 6.02/Pc. China is going down year after year in the Men’s denim category however in the women’s denim category it still holds about 20 % share and stands at number two.
