  • Denim By Premiere Vision 2nd – 3rd June 2010

image Denim by Premiere Vision is again coming back for its 6th edition . To be held on 2nd-3rd June , it will be held in the Halle Freyssinet in the interiors of Paris – in an industrial building . This is not the only difference this time. Denim By Premiere Vision has opened itself  to a number of participants from around the world. This includes a number of known denim manufacturers , labeling companies and a natural dye company from countries like India, Pakistan, South Korea , Thailand etc. This has enabled the fair to increase the number of exhibitors from 62  in the December 2009 edition to 68 exhibitors this time. This is a natural progression for the fair since the the major part of denim world is outside Europe (particularly in Asia)  and that is where the real growth is happening. It can ill afford to ignore the major segment of the denim industry.  The new exhibitors include  :
Arvind – India : The only new addition from India ,and with about 110 million mtrs of denim production and licenses of a number of international denim brands, Arvind was a natural choice for being included as a new participant.
Isko – Turkey :  With a capacity of over 200 million mtrs p.a , Isko is a major  denim player worldwide .
Artistic Milliners – Pakistan : Founded over 60 years ago , this company has a production capacity of 31 million mtrs/year and proposes 2 collections each year.
Artistic Denim Mills -Pakistan :  Integrated denim mill which specialises in dyes and coatings.
AMC Atlantic Mills -Thailand : Though with a capacity of only about 18 million mtrs pa, the company makes some very cool denim fabrics including super dark super soft denim.
Eco Yaa – South Korea : Manufactures natural dyes from plants and particularly grapes – a technique for which it has submitted a patent.

    Future Denim Designer Awards

Denim by Premiere Vision has asked students from the prestigious  fashion and design school – Central Saint Martins – to design jeans (of the future) . The project shall be supervised by Adriano Goldschmied( of Diesel and AG fame). The six finalists shall present their fashion silhouettes (a top + a skirt or trouser) with material supplied by three exhibitors – Orta, TRC  Candiani and Berto . The garments shall be displayed in the show in a special area designed by Saint Martin students.

Here is a complete list of the exhibitors for reference:

  • Production Of Denim Jeans In The EU

Here is a summary of the production of denim jeans in the EU for the period 2003-2007. This report has been compiled by the CBI . It is interesting to see that till 2007 , the production of jeans in Italy is still the largest in the EU and followed closely by Romania and Spain. Italy is increasingly becoming an expensive place to produce the jeans – however, the production of jeans is still quite high. This production has actually seen a significant fall in the last 2 years as per industry estimates and the production is moving to low cost countries like Romania, Spain, Portugal etc. Italy is slowly expected to become more of a design centre than a production center.
Even countries like Romania and Spain are now producing which are middle to high end. The low end jeans are almost entirely being imported from third world countries. This is only to be expected.

    Total EU 111.1 1,544 99.9 1,430 96.5 1,781

It is interesting to note that in case of Romania, the average value of the jeans produced in 2003 was Euro 2.5 only. However, just within 4 years , the average value has increased to Euro 10.63 . This shows that the country has quickly migrated from being a producer of lowest end jeans to that of higher quality jeans in a very short period. This is perhaps the case in most of the EU countries as the wage structure there does not allow to produce low cost jeans which can be easily sourced from the less developed countries. In case of Romania, it is specially so since a large number of Italian jeans manufacturers have set up base there and having their designing base in Italy, they produce in Romania.

When we come to the average value of the jeans produced in EU in 2003 as compared to that in 2007, we again arrive at the same conclusion. In 2003, the average value per pair of jeans was Euro 13.90  . The same increased to Euro 18.45.  This has perhaps increased further in the last 2 years.

    Others 12 10.58 9.37
    Total EU 13.90 14.31 18.45

It is also  interesting to note that almost 89% of total jeans manufacturing in EU is concentrated in Italy, Spain and Romania and out of which Italy and Spain can count as fairly developed countries. Though manufacturing in these countries will reduce in the coming years, it goes on to prove that low cost may not always be the reason for a region to develop a large manufacturing base. The supporting infrastructure, the systems, proximity to  market and the entire knowledge base is equally , if not more, important.  Similar  arguments could perhaps be used to justify the increase of jeans manufacturing in L.A in US.

Note : An unrelated but interesting comparison is the figure of production of jeans in the town of Xintang in China which is supposed to be close to 200 million pcs  per annum. Thus this single town in China produces more  than double the jeans produced in the entire EU  !!!!

  • Denim Fabric Imports Into US Fall 26.72% But Prices Rise 19.40% in 2010

The Denim Fabric imports into US in the first quarter of 2010 showed a negative growth of 26.72%  compared to the same quarter in the year 2009. However, what was surprising to see was that the average prices  of imported denim fabrics rose by 19.40% . It was clearly a reflection of the fact that the volume of premium denim jeans production in US has taken a hit but the manufacturers are trying to use better fabrics to differentiate themselves in the highly competitive premium denim market space. This trend of increasing average prices had actually started in 2009 itself and the prices kept on increasing with each passing quarter.

    Imports of Denim Fabrics Into USA 2009- & 2010 – 1st Quarter

Year Quarter Qty(million sq mtrs.) Qty. ( million mtrs at 160cm) Value

    Change %= -26.72%   -1.1% +19.40%

Lets have a look at some of the  main exporting countries which exported denim fabrics to USA in 2010 first quarter.

    Country 2009  1st quarter
    (million mtrs 160cm width)
    2010 1st quarter

    Taiwan 1.05 0.89 -15.23%
    Japan 0.27 0.56 +107%

We can see that the largest %  increases in imports have been from Japan and Italy – prices from where have been traditionally the highest. This is also reflected in our figures in the first table where the average prices of imports have increased by almost 20%. China is also becoming an important exporter of denim fabrics to US. Mexico has taken the biggest hit in terms of exports – reflecting the inability of the Mexican mills to meet the  requirements of the US importers.

  • The Highest And Lowest Priced Exporters Of Denim To USA In 2009

denim prices About 580 million pieces of denim apparel were imported into US from various countries around the world in 2009. This apparel included mainly jeans and some small quantities of  denim skirts, denim jackets, denim blazers etc. The average price of all this apparel was USD7.15/ piece CIF US .

It would be interesting to know which were the countries whose exports of denim apparel  to the US were very high priced and which were the ones which were priced low and we can see the marked difference between the two as also compared with the average prices .Lets have a look

Countries Exporting High Priced Denim Apparel

Italy , Japan and and Tunisia were the countries from where the denim jeans and apparel were the costliest for imports into US.  Naturally the volume for the same was also much lower as compared to low priced exporters.

Japan – $46.47/piece   CIF US Ports
    Tunisia -$32.75/piece    –do–
    Italy -     $31.21/piece    –do–

As expected Japan had to get the distinction of the highest priced exporting country . However, it was surprising to see that apparel from Tunisia were more expensive that from Italy. It is however to be noted that Tunisia exported much lesser volume to US than Italy.

    Countries Exporting Cheap Denim Apparel

This is the category of countries most of the buyers of denim jeans/apparel from US are interested in knowing.  Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam were the countries from where these exports were really very cheap.

    Bangladesh : $ 5.19/piece  CIF US Ports
    Vietnam      : $5.92/piece   —-do——–
    Pakistan      : $5.97/piece   —-do——-

So we have an interesting matrix where ,against the average price of denim apparel at $7.15/piece, we can see the prices to be as high as $46.50 and as low as $5.20. This also shows the difference in prices  at which jeans and other denim apparel retail in the US – from $9.99(or lower) a jeans to $500 for a pair jeans.

  • Av. Price Of Denim Apparel Imports In US Goes Down 7% in 2009

denim apparel The average price of imports of denim apparels into US has gone down significantly in the year 2009 as compared to the year 2008 .The year 2008 had actually seen an increase of 1% in the average price of imports of denim apparels as compared to the year 2007. But when we come to the year 2009 , the average price has actually gone down by almost 7%.This was inspite of an increase of over 1.5% in volumes. It  reflects  the spillover affect of the recessionary period that hit the world and specially the US.

Denim Apparel Imports -Value and Average Price

Year Quantity(million pcs) Value(US$ million) Average Price (per pc)
    2007 549.09 4.172 $7.59
    2008 577.52 4.434 $7.67
    2009 584.74 4.180 $7.14

We can hope that the year 2010 would show an improvement in prices and the volumes as well as the reports trickling in are positive.

  • Imports Of Women’s Denim Jeans Into US : 2007-2009

In a previous report we mentioned that Imports of Women’s/Girls Jeans into US in the period from Jan-June 2009 increased over 6.34% over the same period in the year 2008. Lets see how this category fared over the entire last year and whether the same trend continued towards the end of the year or not.

    Source:US Customs

It is very interesting to see that the trend of increase in imports of women’s/girls jeans continued even in the second half of the year and a net increase of about 3.35%  was achieved on year on year basis (2009 over 2008). The undertone of imports is very strong and indicates a strong market for the women’s denim jeans in the US . This tone is expected to continue even in the current year.

    Winners :

China , Vietnam and Bangladesh emerge as strong winners – improving their export performance continuously and in great volumes .China has specially increased its share dramatically. All of these three destinations are strong denim production centers providing low priced jeans. This does indicate that the buyers are definitely getting more and more price concious where denim buying is concerned. However, they also want a quality product and some cheaper destinations which could not probably provide the same –eg Cambodia- have emerged as losers. India has also improved its exports but the overall volumes are quite limited. Lesotho seems to have gained whereas as its sub-saharan fellow country Madagascar is losing its share. Out of the two, Lesotho is a cheaper producer of denim jeans and a number of denim factories(garments) have been established there by reputed manufacturers from around the world including Taiwan.

    Losers :

Mexico and South American countries are among the biggest losers . Whereas in earlier years, these countries had captured a large % share of US imports of denim jeans, their importance is slowly reducing on account of increased costs of production . This is despite various advantages provided by the US government to them. Jordan is also losing its cost competitiveness and has lost some share to Egypt. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Indonesia are surprise losers – even though being important denim centers and being low cost countries.

  • Imports Of Blue Denim Skirts In USA 2007-2009

Let’s take a look at the import figures of Blue Denim Skirts into US in the last three years . We will find that the total imports of denim skirts has fallen in the last three years from 22.49 million pieces in 2007 to 13.72 million pcs in 2009(11 months). Also given are the few major exporters who are contributing to these imports with China on the top position.

Imports of Denim Skirts In US –(2007-2009): In Million pcs

    From 2007 2008 2009(Jan-Nov) 2009 Vs 2008

    Vietnam 0.93 0.37 0.54 image
    Indonesia 1.02 0.51 0.49  image

China has been the major exporter of this item to US – but it seems to be losing ground. However, it has still maintained a healthy 50% share of the blue denim skirt market(imports) into US.

Bangladesh seems to have improved their share drastically by almost 60% . Other countries have just about maintained their share or improved a bit.

But on the whole the total imports for this item have fallen by almost 33% since 2007 indicating a not great a market and trend for the same.

  • Arvind’s Profits Up On Better Denim Performance – 3rd Quarter 2009

The improvement in denim market has started to reflect on the balance sheets of denim mills in India

image Arvind  Mills from India has recently declared its financial results and has shown a profit of Rs 12.25 crores(USD 2.6 million approx.) for the third quarter as against a loss of Rs 33.17 crores(USD 7.5 million) in the corresponding period last year. Though the results are strictly not comparable because of demerger of its brands and retail business, they do reflect the positive sentiment on denim.

Here are some figures on denim fabrics :

    • Growth of 36% in volumes over last year.
    • 16% growth in export volume .
    • Increase in domestic sale to 60% as against 54% last year – This also reflects the strong domestic market for denim in India.

The figures do bode well for the denim industry in India and we should see other companies also bringing out great results.

However, there are two factors which have been dampening the otherwise rosy scenario of denim industry :

    1. Cotton Prices: Cotton prices have been firming up since the beginning of the season – almost 25% + and are not expected to mellow down in the coming months. Being a major component of the denim cost, the prices of cotton immediately affect the bottomline.
    2. Weakening Dollar : The exchange rate of dollar against the Indian Rupee had reached levels of about INR 49- 49.50 per dollar. However, with strengthening rupee , the exchange rate has slid to about Rs 46 – a reduction of almost 6% +. This is perhaps one of the reasons why Arvind is focusing more on domestic market – of course not forgetting a 20% + growth rate in domestic demand of denim in India .
  • Market For Blue Denim Jackets in US

image We have been hearing of a revival in the blue denim jackets and that the demand seems to be picking up in the same with some forecasters also suggesting a starting of a trend on Double Denim. But is it really so ?

The figures don’t tell the same story. Lets take a look at the total imports of denim jackets in US in 2007,2008 and 2009

US Imports of blue denim jackets in 2007-2009

The imports of Blue Denim Jackets in US has actually reduced over a period of 2007-2009. Though this data may not cover some other jackets which do not fall under the “Blue Denim Jackets” category, their quantity is expected to be small.
Thus, the data belies any expectations of a great surge in denim jackets demand.

  • US Jeans Buyers Care Most About Fit

Price has always been an important criteria for buyers of jeans . However, the success of premium denim jeans has shown that when purchasing denim , buyers are looking for many other things. A report by Cotton Inc on US consumers last year shows that fit is the most important criteria for the purchase of jeans.

    denim report

50% of the buyers make a denim purchasing decision based on the FIT OF THE JEANS..

Price has been a factor for jeans purchase only for 16% of the respondents. Against this , on an average , 84% of consumers purchase other apparel products based on Price..

Other interesting facts about  US Denim consumers As Per Report :

    • 78% of consumers love wearing denim (should be higher !)
    • 62% of consumers bought denim because they needed to replace old ones and 28% wanted to get something new !
    • 96% of consumers own denim .
    • On an average US consumers own about 7 pairs of jeans – This is about 6% of their wardrobe.. This translates into about 105 garments owned by an average US consumer (wow!).
    • Women are more likely to care about fit 55 % vs 41% in case of men.

  • Denim By Premier Vision Dec 2009 – Trends On Denim Fabrics And Jeans

The December edition of the Denim By Premier Vision  was a successful fair with a good summary of different qualities and finishings. The visitors showed a lot of interest in the new denim developments .

What Were The New Denim Trends

This was a season of a perfectly imperfect jean. The following effects on denim jeans could be noticed:

    • hard abrasion-  ripped and torn denim!!!
    • dirt and stains .
    • oil marks .
    • very extreme washes!!!! + finishes
    • dirty and paint staining
    • paint and bleach spotted garments
    • holes
    • patch work
    • bleach spots
    • tye dyed (green casts)
    • warp cotton indigo + green fill dyed
    • pu coated jeans (with pigments)
    • permanent wrinkles + no pressing simple blowing of jeans and even without blowing..

Another noticeable product was HIGH TECH DENIM——- special treatment on denim with special products which improve and activates blood circulation!! . The only question is  the permanancy of this kind of product.

It was surprising to note that  ECO Denim  was not showing too much — perhaps due to the heavy and extreme washes.

I could also notice new finishing plants and laundries attending the show.

It seems that the revival of the jeans is now more concentrated on finishing and very comfortable stretch fabrics.

    Color Denimsystems

Application of color on the denim was in various forms :

    • with pu coating weft color metallic yarn
    • coating + pu coating -pigment
    • overdying

    Cozy Denim

Soft denims could be described as the ones with the following materials :

    • Tencel
    • T400/ Lycra
    • Bi-stretch-high stretch-open weaves

  • Exports Of Women’s Jeans From India/Bangladesh To USA – 2000:2009

    womens jeans denim

Women’s denim jeans has become more important than the Men’s denim in the recent years due to the fact that women’s jeans (as against men’s jeans) can accomodate almost all kinds of denim innovations within existing or new styles. Women are more fashion conscious than men and are prone to buy jeans on an impulse. It is not without reason that US consumes more of women’s jeans than men’s.

Let’s take a look at the exports of women’s denim jeans from India  and Bangladesh to US over a long period of time : 2000-2009 . We will also see the price changes that have taken place over this period. It would be interesting to compare the two as both are important apparel export countries from South Asia . However, Bangladesh has an edge over India because of duty advantages to Europe and US.

It is interesting to note that though there was not much difference in the export quantity of the jeans from India and Bangladesh in 2000, Bangladesh now exports over 4 times the quantity of women’s jeans than India. However, India has the lead in price of almost 40%– though it has experienced a constant fall in average prices since the year 2000. But this price difference is also due to the reason that India does not export much quantity of basic 5 pocket jeans.
