    COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO MEXICO DURING MAY-JUNE 2020


    During May-June 2020, Mexico has imported approx. 1.91 million sqm of denim fabrics. This is about 80% less than the March – April month. The main reason being that the effect of coronavirus began to be seen during May – June as orders and shipments cancelled.

    CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 1.20 million sqm at an average price of USD 0.95/sqm. India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 0.41 million sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 1.57/sqm.

    (Note: this data has been captured from various govt organizations including customs. the actual imports are likely to be higher than this figure . Also we need to understand that the prices are sometimes not correct representations as in Mexico there are many suppliers under reporting the actual price for custom benefits )

    COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO INDONESIA IN SEPT 2020

    In the month of Sept 2020, Indonesia imported approx. 6.99 lacs meters of denim fabrics.

    CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Indonesia with a total volume of about 4.88 lacs meters, which comprises a 70% share in total import of denim of Indonesia for Sept 2020.

    Hongkong with a 20% share is the 2nd largest exporting country to Indonesia during Sept 2020 – this effectively means that China controls about 90% of the market. Also we can see that the average prices of denim fabric coming into Indonesia from China or HK is not bad. Pakistan and Turkey contributed some miniscule quantities as well.

    So far as the import of denim fabric by different companies are concerned, Sai Garment Industries and  PT. Sandang Asa Maju Abadi are the two biggest importers of denim fabric in Indonesia with a total import of 1.56 lacs meter and 1.31 lacs meters of denim fabric respectively.     In the month of July 2020, Indonesia imported approx. 5.63 lacs meters of denim fabrics.

    CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Indonesia with a total volume of about 3.79 lacs meters, which comprises a 67% share in total import of denim of Indonesia for July 2020.

    As we see from the report, the imports of denim fabrics into Indonesia is not too high in July but has some decent quantities coming from China and HK. Indonesia itself has a good manufacturing base in denim fabrics and it is not easy for companies from other countries to compete here. However, it is to be noted that the average price of imports is quite high and shows that high quality fabrics are being imported .

    34% Fall In Ethiopian Jeans Export During April-June’20

    Ethiopian Textile & Apparel industry has been one of the most promising sourcing destinations for the last few years. The country has a target to generate 30 billion U.S. dollars in export from the textile and apparel sector by 2030, according to Bogale Feleke, Ethiopian Deputy Minister of Industry.

    However, COVID 19 didn’t leave Ethiopia also, the country which is already battling with many issues including poverty has been hit very hard by COVID. Due to the global slowdown in buying, it’s manufacturing also severely affected due to this.

    In this report, we have done a detailed analysis of leading denim exporters from Ethiopia and also the buyers who are importing these jeans from Ethiopia for April- June’20.

    1. Top Export Destinations

    The United States with a 93% share in the total denim exports by Ethiopia ranked #1 during April-June’20. Out of total exports of 1.34 million units, the United States imported 1.25 million pcs. Canada is at #2 with a 4% share and it has imported 48,747 pcs of denim. Other countries including Spain, Germany, and Malaysia had also imported the denim from Ethiopia however the volume is not that high.

    Comparison: April- June’20 V. 2019

    There has been a fall of 34% in the jeans exports of Ethiopia during April-June’20, last year for the same period the total exports were 2.04 million pcs which fell up to 1.34 million pcs this year. The primary reason for such a fall is COVID 19.
    A change in the overall export share of Ethiopean reporters has been also observed within a year of time. Ashton Apparel which was the largest exporter last year has been overruled by EPIC Apparels which rose from 9% to 30% this year while Ashton lost more than half of its share in 2020.

    Indochine also witnessed a substantial fall from 23% to 11% this year.

    The growth trend of India is at a great pace, after successful March & April’20, India showed encouraging trend in the month of May’2020 in the Colombian Denim Imports. India once again beat other countries during the pandemic times to be the largest exporter of denim fabrics to Colombia during May 2020.

    We analyze the same in this report besides listing major denim fabric importers in COLOMBIA during May 2020 and analyzed the volume and average price along with the countries from where they are buying. A comparison of the import trend for March-May’19 and March-May’20 has been also made. The contents of this report are as below:

    TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO COLOMBIA

    In the month of May 2020, Colombia has imported approx. 2.40 million sqm of denim fabrics.

    With 1.75 million sqm of denim fabric export, India strongly positioned itself as #1 exporter to Colombia during May 2020 however CHINA, which happened to be the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Colombia, continues to lose its share and now with 15% share, it is at #2 during May’20.

    China exported 3.49 lacs sqm of denim fabrics at an average price of $1.6/sqm.

    As far as the average price is concerned, India’s average price turned to be the most competitive amongst all at $1.15/sq mtr. Turkey exported the fabric at the most expensive average price of USD 3.91/Sqm.

    India is at #1 with 72.3% share and China slipped to #2 with a substantial fall and its share reached up to 14.9%, 10 % down from March-April’20.

    TOP DENIM IMPORTING COMPANIES OF COLOMBIA

    So far as the import of denim fabric by different companies are concerned, JOHN URIBE and COMERCIALIZADORA SADA are the biggest importers of denim fabric into Colombia with the total import of 0.53 million sqm and 0.47 million sqm of denim fabric respectively. JOHN URIBE is the buyer which has imported the denim fabrics at the most expensive average price i.e., $1.46/sqm even though being the biggest importer.

    2020 V. 2019 Comparative Analysis on Import Trend

    The COVID affect looks very apparent once we analyse the import figures of Mar-May for both the years. In 2020, Import witnessed a fall of approx. 49%, meaning the business is slashed by half due to global lockdown and restricted movement.

    However, one more important outcome of this analysis is that, China has been losing its share to Colombian Denim Export very brutally. China’s share has taken a toll, a total fall of 77% within a year is massive. China’s loss became India’s gain and the country managed to increase its penetration from 25% to 60% within a year.

    All the other countries have experience the substantial fall in their share with India being a sole exception.

    CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Chile with a total volume of about 1.12 kgs at an average price of USD 4.68/kg. Pakistan is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 17,266 kgs of denim fabric at an average price of USD 6.18/kg.

    So far as the import of denim fabric by different companies are concerned, EMPRESA and SOCIEDAD COMERCIAL INDIGO are the two biggest importers of denim fabric in Chile with the total import of 1.59 lacs Kgs and 11,527 Kgs of denim fabric respectively. MANUF E IMP bought the fabrics from SANTISTA (Brazil) at an average price of $6.32/kgs which is the most expensive amongst all.

    TOP 5 COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO MEXICO IN MAY 2020

    In the month of May 2020, Mexico has imported approx. 1.32 million sqm of denim fabrics.

    CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 0.7 million sqm. Comparing to last year, China witnessed a massive fall of 93% in its export to Mexico.

    In our previous report, it has been learnt that China lost a huge share in the Colombian Denim Industry also. As far as Mexico is concerned, the trend remained the same, China’s share to Mexico Denim Industry dropped from 74% to 53%. On the other hand, India has increased its share from 7% to a whopping 32%.

    India performed really very well comparing to last year. India emerged as the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 0.41 million sqm, India exported 0.30 million sqm in May 2019. In May 2020, India’s export to Mexico rose by 35.60%.

    Apart from India, a great surge has been observed in the Japan export also.

    Indonesia has always been a strong player in the global apparel industry. However, with the rise of China in the last 2 decades, the country could not effectively compete with China and had not been doing so well with many garment units closing down and fabric companies also facing a lot of problems.
    However, the US-China trade war has again given a window of opportunity to Indonesian companies to fight back and to re-establish themselves.

    In this report, we check out how the Indonesian denim garment exporters are faring in different markets and which are the main buyers they are supplying to. It is heartening to note that even during this pandemic, Indonesian companies were able to export over 4.5 million pcs of denim around the world. We will see that further down in the report some very interesting facts about the exports from this country.

    If we look at the above chart, we will find that the maximum shipments of denim in June 2020 from Indonesia went to the US – over 81%!  Japan is the second-largest market for Indonesian denim with about 10% of the share. Other markets are really small in comparison and not so important for Indonesian exporters. There is a good mix of high value and low-value buyers as we will see in this report.

    If we look at the above chart, we will find that Eratex , Sai Apparel Industries, and Daehan Global dominate the export of denim from Indonesia with over 50% of total exports. The rest of the share is divided into a number of smaller companies. This shows that the export market is concentrated in the hands of a few exporters who are much larger than others and have a varied customer base.

    Besides, we can also infer that the country is doing relatively well in this pandemic times with a decent export figure of over 4.5 million pcs of jeans/ denim apparel during this time.  The country depends a lot on the US market and though it also has exposure in Japan and some other nearby countries. But we need to continuously check how the exports from this country perform in the coming months and the effect of COVID will be much better visible.

    Mexican Textile And Apparel Industry – An Outlook

    This is a report by Miguel Angel Andreu Marin from Cedetex- who has a long experience of the Mexican Textile Industry. He brings a macro analysis of the Mexican Textile Industry and its Outlook in a report recently published by him. We bring some key findings that he shares :

    Key Findings
    Mexico’s total GDP grew 0.25% in 2019. Flat behaviour.

    • Textile GDP decreased 4%
    • Clothes (Apparel) GDP decreased 4.7%
    • The knitting sector grew 2%
    • United States of America GDP grew 2.9% in 2019.
    • 2020 first quarter fell 5%
    • By the end of the year could be a fall of 5.9% of more.
    • 2019 mexican inflation rate was 2.83%
    • During the first five months of 2020 inflation rate continue being less and less, 2.15% in april
    • Before the beginning of covid times, March 6th, the Exchange Rate begins to depreciate with respect to the United States Dollar, starting on $18 mexican pesos per U.S. Dollar, reaching a maximum of $ 25.12 on March 24th
    • Starting in May, the exchange rate began to recover. Around $ 22 during the first fortnight of June.
    • Despite the fact that the unemployment rate increased from 4.4% to 14.7% between March and April in the U.S.A. This country continues to be the main origin of money orders (remittances) to Mexico. The flow of this resource had a decrease of only 2.6% during the month of April compared to the same month of the previous year, with an amount of 2,861 million US dollars.
    • Remittances increased 50% in March 2020 compared to the previous month, they were $ 4,694 million dollars.
    • In April, they resumed the trend they have had in recent years, increasing 6.2% compared to February 2020
    • The average wage of insured workers to the IMSS reached an amount of $ 403.6 (four hundred three point six pesos). More or less, USD $20 per day.
    • The closure of Full Package suppliers in China and other Southeast Asian countries during the first quarter of 2020 led to additional orders for garments and footwear from Mexican factories.
    • Total value of Imports of clothing from the World to the United States decreased 19% comparing January-April 2020 with the same period of the previous year, Mexico lost 25% . China had the biggest drop,
    • Sales strategies that may be proposed in the near future by some big Mexican stores, as well as some the United States brands, could be delaying mark downs until the end of the season (Spring until August, Winter until March)
    • Request their clothing suppliers, in different countries of the World, to acquire and use digital platforms for communications and collaborative design and production networks with their contractors
    • Transform purchase orders, placed before the pandemic, into Fall-Winter collections
    • Most textile and apparel factories in Mexico has been closed during the last three months. The fall of this industry GDP could be around 20% for the second quarter of 2020.
    • With the “return to new normal”, the drop in GDP for the next three quarters would be less and less until it began to grow from the second quarter of 2021 on.

      In the charts below, Miguel shares the contribution of the Mexican TExtile and Apparel industry to the Mexican GDP. It is interesting to note that only about 3.8% of the GDP comes from Textile and Apparel. And this % seems to have reduced in 2020 compared to 2019 .

    In the table below, it is interesting to see the approx sales of different types of clothing in the country from 2016 to early 2020 . The sales figues of jeans, casual trousers, Dress Trousers , Blouses , and many other categories are given below. The relative share of different clothing is also given.     The share of denim jeans is the highest among all types of clothes with about 10% share of all clothing. This is a big number even though it seems that the sales are almost flat or going down in 4 years. About 328 million jeans were sold in 2016 whereas in 2019 about 321 million jeans were sold. 2020 will see further loss in sales.

    In the month of April 2020, Mexico has imported approx. 5.2 million sqm of denim fabrics.

    CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Mexico with a total volume of about 4.87 million sqm at an average price of USD 0.79/sqm. India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 0.24 million sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 1.56/sq.

    (Note: this data has been captured from various govt organizations including customs. the actual imports are likely to be higher than this figure. Also, we need to understand that the prices are sometimes not correct representations as in Mexico there are many suppliers under-reporting the actual price for custom benefits )
