A Talk With Nishi Vora On Sustainable Trims From Fashion Accessories India

Ms. Nishi Vora – Director – Fashion Accessories India Pvt Limited

Fashion Accessories India Pvt Ltd is India’s largest manufacturer of garment accessories. They are a part of the RCBC Group, one of the most reputed denim trading companies in the country.

Their production facilities spread over 70,000 sq. ft., manufacture metal trims such as shank buttons & rivets, snap fasteners, metal brandings, eyelets, and patches of different materials such as faux leather, jacron paper, silicon, fabric, and heat transfers. They mention that all the trims manufactured at their units pass international testing standards and quality checks.

We spoke to Ms. Nishi Vora (see video here) – Director of Fashion Accessories India and tried to get her perspective of the accessories industry in India and how they are trying to cater to sustainability requirements in this segment by buyers around the world.

What do you think makes Fashion Accessories co. different from other accessory companies.

I think what makes us different is our legacy. We are a part of RCBC, India’s most reputed traders of denim fabric. As our family grew, the manufacturing of trims became a natural extension as there was nobody else in the space and demand was huge.
Even under trims, we manufacture the whole gamut – metal trims, patches, labels, transfers – everything one needs to brand their jeans. Immediately, we became a one-stop-shop for all the brands. Brands come to us and they get everything under one roof – denim fabric from every mill and all your trims. Sourcing becomes that much easier, as does managing their supplier count.

Also, I think our relationships are what set us apart from everyone. We have always ensured that building a relationship with our customers comes first, business is secondary. That helps us provide prompt service, 24×7 support, and quality goods every single time.

You are already working on sustainable accessories. Are you following any particular standards for the same?

We have just launched our new collection of sustainable trims ‘Kind To The Planet’ after almost a year of rigorous research. The collection is elegantly designed & vibrant and saves material, energy, and water at the same time.

    Metal Trims –

    • Material – We use recycled metals as far as possible. Further, we have developed single piece buttons and rivets – eliminating the bottom part and saving about 40% of the material used.
    • Finishing – Our collection is raw, letting the base materials shine. To achieve a variety of finishes, we have used different processes such as polishing, tumbling, and vintage erosion on the base materials. This ensures that we save up to 50-70% water generally used for electroplating but also provide a wide variety of color options as well.

    Patches –

    • Our company is 100% vegan – we have never used any leather in our patches. Our USP, in fact, is developing faux leather materials that look and feel exactly like leather, but have no animal product on them.
    • We use FSC certified recycled jacron for our patches and create different textures and looks using only hot-stamping techniques. We are eliminating the use of additional coloring and keeping the look as natural as possible
    • We also use organic cotton, hemp, and cork materials to created printed labels.

What are your best selling products in India and overseas

Our faux leather patches and metal shanks are currently our bestseller products. A lot of R&D goes into developing faux leather whose look, texture, and feel is exactly like leather, but it has no animal product at all.

We take pride in the fact that most end customers probably will not be able to tell the difference between PU and leather when they look at our labels on a brand’s jeans. In metal, our biggest win is that we have our own electroplating unit, so we are constantly innovating on new techniques and finishes. Currently, we have more than 150 finishes and we are constantly working with brands to create a new finish especially for them almost every day.

What changes do you see in the requirements of buyers in the recent times and how you have adjusted to them.

I think a major change that the pandemic has brought about is that brands are developing more timeless collections, as opposed to focusing on seasonal trends. Also, lighter and airier silhouettes are becoming popular with the end customer. Basic is ‘in’ and so are simple, elegant trims.

Adapting to this, our collection also focuses on classic designs and finishes. We suggest using brass buttons over alloy shanks currently as it is technically more sound, lighter, faster to produce, and more cost-effective as well. In patches, we suggest thin faux leather patches or jacron patches in neutral shades of browns, blacks, and creams. These patches are designed to last across seasons, showcase the brand name clearly, and add minimal weight to the jeans.

Weaving Your Brand Identity One Trim At A Time

Nishi says that their USP is their power to tell brand’s story through trims. They blend season trends and your collection inspirations with their technical and design prowess to create a complete trim package – everything from metal brandings to back-patches to additional accessories.

The company works with its client to create a brand image that is aspirational and one that customers desire. They follow a very simple process – they study the client’s brand identity and understand their requirements through tech packs or mood boards, post which the company generates trim collections that are unique to your brand.

Fashion Accessories also designs its own collections every season based on WGSN trends. Its ‘set designs’ & trend mapping, where the company showcases innovative ways to incorporate different trends in garments using trims, are very popular with all their clients. They have successfully executed neon accents, rustic looks by hammering metals, holographic additions; fluidly adding brand value to garments without overpowering them.

    Digital Initiatives

The pandemic has taught the company that there are no boundaries once you go digital! In order to take Indian innovations overseas and increase their global footprint, they are showcasing their entire collection online on www.fashionaccessories.co.in (on request).

  • Top Indonesian Exporters Of Denim Apparel In June 2020

Top Indonesian Exporters Of Denim Apparel In June 2020

Indonesia has always been a strong player in the global apparel industry. However, with the rise of China in the last 2 decades, the country could not effectively compete with China and had not been doing so well with many garment units closing down and fabric companies also facing a lot of problems.
However, the US-China trade war has again given a window of opportunity to Indonesian companies to fight back and to re-establish themselves.

In this report, we check out how the Indonesian denim garment exporters are faring in different markets and which are the main buyers they are supplying to. It is heartening to note that even during this pandemic, Indonesian companies were able to export over 4.5 million pcs of denim around the world. We will see that further down in the report some very interesting facts about the exports from this country.

    image

If we look at the above chart, we will find that the maximum shipments of denim in June 2020 from Indonesia went to the US – over 81%!  Japan is the second-largest market for Indonesian denim with about 10% of the share. Other markets are really small in comparison and not so important for Indonesian exporters. There is a good mix of high value and low-value buyers as we will see in this report.

    SAI APPAREL / GARMENT INDUSTRIES

Sai apparel industries has also exported decent volumes of denim at over 600,000pcs. Its average price has been much lower than Eratex at about $5.93 a piece. This is also because it is dealing with a different set of customers than Eratex. Its main customers include :

    • One Jeanswear- US
    • American Eagle – Canada
    • H&M – Canada
    • Asa Niaga – Malaysia
    • H&M – Chile
    • H&M – Germany, the US, and Poland, Mexico, Switzerland, etc.

    SAN SAN SAUDARATEX JAYA

This company exported over 3.5 lac mtrs to different customers around the world at a low average price of US$4.75. The reason for this is that they deal with children’s garments and women garments which are comparatively lower priced. Besides, their customers include  :

    • H&M Canada
    • H&M US
    • William Carter – US

The company can be contacted from this link https://www.ptsansan.co.id/en/contact-us/

    image

If we look at the above chart, we will find that Eratex , Sai Apparel Industries, and Daehan Global dominate the export of denim from Indonesia with over 50% of total exports. The rest of the share is divided into a number of smaller companies. This shows that the export market is concentrated in the hands of a few exporters who are much larger than others and have a varied customer base.

Besides, we can also infer that the country is doing relatively well in this pandemic times with a decent export figure of over 4.5 million pcs of jeans/ denim apparel during this time.  The country depends a lot on the US market and though it also has exposure in Japan and some other nearby countries. But we need to continuously check how the exports from this country perform in the coming months and the effect of COVID will be much better visible.

The show had all the elements which a physical trade offers, the exhibitors were allotted a virtual booth, or we could say a virtual room to be very precise, a few of our visitors felt nostalgic as it reminded them about the physical trade shows as all seem to be missing them !

Exhibitors are networking using – TABLE feature on the platform

The buyer and suppliers were interacting individually while other activities like denim talks, seminars, and trend presentations were happening. Users could chose to attend different talks or interact with exhibitors or just network. Exhibitors from different countries decorated their booths well inside their own offices and these were visible to the visiting customers.

  • Yoga–Finding The Denim Connect With Ebru Debagg And Ani Wells

Yoga–Finding The Denim Connect With Ebru Debagg And Ani Wells

Yoga is a mind and body practice with a 5,000-year history in ancient Indian philosophy. Various styles of yoga combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. In more recent years, it has become popular as a form of physical exercise based upon poses that promote improved control of the mind and body and enhance well-being.

During the first edition of Denimsandjeans Virtual event held on July 22-23 , there was a great session on finding a connect between yoga and denim.  Ebru Debagg and Ani Wells – both denim as well as yoga experts spoke to Sandeep Agarwal and all three tried to find a connect between Yoga and Denim.

Ebru started practicing yoga about 18 years ago after suggestion by former CEO of Orta and she mentioned that it has been a long journey for her and she also traveled a lot for yoga and also used to try to find hotels near yoga centers ! She also set up a yoga studio at Orta and did teacher trainings around the world.

Ani mentioned that she started yoga about 2 years ago and it changed her life. The other forms of exercises in gyms she was practicing before did not give her the mental escape that yoga immediately gave her.

Ebru compared yoga and denim philosphically :

“I would like to refer to the consciousness part of it because I think what we have been discussing in denim industry for so long – sustainability is an act of consciousness and yoga kind of help build that consciousness . One of the greatest teacher said that Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory . I refer to greenwashing in our industry and we have to walk the talk and put all practice in action. So I find a great similarilty between yoga and sustainability aspect of our industry . Also during yoga I keep my DRISHTI ie the focus at one point and so in our industry the DRISHTI (focus) needs to be set right”

Ani Wells also mentioned that mindfulness and consciousness are so important for our supply chain and also in yoga . She also mentioned about visiting Saitex Vietnam about the mindfulness and holistic approach in production processes for both inputs and outputs. She further added :

“Yoga is also about flexibility and so is denim now with super high stretch denims and we do not know future holds and there are so many opportunities so I think the concept of improving adaptability and flexibility. Also yoga practitioners deeply care about the environment and so should our industry people do ”

Ebru agreed with her and further stressed about commonalities

“As we focus more on mindfulness and sustainability , we will find more common grounds between yoga and denim . Ebru said Ebru gave a great comparison between yoga and denim by saying that yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory and our industry should learn from it by not greenwashing but actually work towards 99% sustainability .”

Ebru mentioned that she was wearing jeans which she bought from Gap from Japan and these are super stretch and she could  easily do yoga in them without feeling uncomfortable.  Both felt that yoga can give more inspiration to the industry to come out with super super stretch and there is a space for it but currently they were not really positive on lot of people using denim for yoga .  But both agreed that both yoga and denim are for everyone and they transcend race, region, religion , age and geographies .

They  performed some great yoga poses in their cool denims and it was a treat to see them doing some asanas which are specifically very useful during this stressful period .

  • Mexican Textile And Apparel Industry – An Outlook

Mexican Textile And Apparel Industry – An Outlook

This is a report by Miguel Angel Andreu Marin from Cedetex- who has a long experience of the Mexican Textile Industry. He brings a macro analysis of the Mexican Textile Industry and its Outlook in a report recently published by him. We bring some key findings that he shares :

    Key Findings
Mexico’s total GDP grew 0.25% in 2019. Flat behaviour.

    • Textile GDP decreased 4%
    • Clothes (Apparel) GDP decreased 4.7%
    • The knitting sector grew 2%
    • United States of America GDP grew 2.9% in 2019.
    • 2020 first quarter fell 5%
    • By the end of the year could be a fall of 5.9% of more.
    • 2019 mexican inflation rate was 2.83%
    • During the first five months of 2020 inflation rate continue being less and less, 2.15% in april
    • Before the beginning of covid times, March 6th, the Exchange Rate begins to depreciate with respect to the United States Dollar, starting on $18 mexican pesos per U.S. Dollar, reaching a maximum of $ 25.12 on March 24th
    • Starting in May, the exchange rate began to recover. Around $ 22 during the first fortnight of June.
    • Despite the fact that the unemployment rate increased from 4.4% to 14.7% between March and April in the U.S.A. This country continues to be the main origin of money orders (remittances) to Mexico. The flow of this resource had a decrease of only 2.6% during the month of April compared to the same month of the previous year, with an amount of 2,861 million US dollars.
    • Remittances increased 50% in March 2020 compared to the previous month, they were $ 4,694 million dollars.
    • In April, they resumed the trend they have had in recent years, increasing 6.2% compared to February 2020
    • The average wage of insured workers to the IMSS reached an amount of $ 403.6 (four hundred three point six pesos). More or less, USD $20 per day.
    • The closure of Full Package suppliers in China and other Southeast Asian countries during the first quarter of 2020 led to additional orders for garments and footwear from Mexican factories.
    • Total value of Imports of clothing from the World to the United States decreased 19% comparing January-April 2020 with the same period of the previous year, Mexico lost 25% . China had the biggest drop,
    • Sales strategies that may be proposed in the near future by some big Mexican stores, as well as some the United States brands, could be delaying mark downs until the end of the season (Spring until August, Winter until March)
    • Request their clothing suppliers, in different countries of the World, to acquire and use digital platforms for communications and collaborative design and production networks with their contractors
    • Transform purchase orders, placed before the pandemic, into Fall-Winter collections
    • Most textile and apparel factories in Mexico has been closed during the last three months. The fall of this industry GDP could be around 20% for the second quarter of 2020.
    • With the “return to new normal”, the drop in GDP for the next three quarters would be less and less until it began to grow from the second quarter of 2021 on.

In the charts below, Miguel shares the contribution of the Mexican TExtile and Apparel industry to the Mexican GDP. It is interesting to note that only about 3.8% of the GDP comes from Textile and Apparel. And this % seems to have reduced in 2020 compared to 2019 .

In the table below, it is interesting to see the approx sales of different types of clothing in the country from 2016 to early 2020 . The sales figues of jeans, casual trousers, Dress Trousers , Blouses , and many other categories are given below. The relative share of different clothing is also given. Download link for the full report also given alongwith.

    [private_special]

The share of denim jeans is the highest among all types of clothes with about 10% share of all clothing. This is a big number even though it seems that the sales are almost flat or going down in 4 years. About 328 million jeans were sold in 2016 whereas in 2019 about 321 million jeans were sold. 2020 will see further loss in sales.
