Originally established in Syria in 2003, and subsequently transferred to Egypt in 2016, their Tadweer (which means “recycle” in Arabic) recycling plant has been at the forefront of their commitment to preserving natural resources.Tadweer, is a fully integrated facility for collecting the waste, categorizing, cutting and recycling.

Denimsandjeans welcomes them at the 1st edition of the Egypt show in Cairo.Their Sales and Marketing Director, Alessandro Moretti Ciacci shared some insights about their company , innovations and collections.

Sharabati is a premium fabric manufacturer well known globally and one of the most successful denim companies. What makes Sharabati tick ?

You have experienced the Egypt growth story very positively and  deeply and we are sure you are  very convinced about it . How do you see the future developing? 

• Egypt is the new star for jeans production. Still needs a lot of implementations to create a fully efficient supply chain, but this will happen very soon, as the efforts and investments being done will bring Egypt production to a different level
• Already now you can feel the boom in requests; the future, not far away, is going to be brilliant. 

We thank you for joining the first Denimsandjeans Egypt show in 2025. What would  be your focus collection and products this time? 

SS26 is all about freshness, softness and blending with nature. Simplicity and purity drive silhouettes while comfort is still king. 

We have 4 main concepts this season:

• Verso concept is for smart and clean look. In this concept one of the main group is MaxSoft fabrics that take softness to another level by a special techniques. There is also tencel and organic cotton blended fabrics which makes denim richer and gives extra comfort.. Our new reactive blue color Ever Sky is a fresh alternative for clean look.
• Good Ole concept is for authentic look. Fine slub effects, crosshatches and tencel, hemp blended articles not only giving a true authentic look but also promising the comfort
• Coolr concept is all about colors, prints and different weaves. It is the future of denim in an art form.
• In Relive concept, each season we select and highlight some of our sustainable efforts. This season we focused on tencel, hemp and regenerative cotton. All our articles in tencel made by organic cotton and all the hemps by regenerative cotton.

You also work on luxury denim and selvedge fabric range. Can you elaborate  on such specialities and how it helps you to differentiate from other companies. 

• Dream of Nile, our registered Brand, is all made of Giza 94 Cotton. It brings denim to a different level. It is the natural link between luxury and denim. Drapy, shiny, clearly visible super reach and high level fabrics. All this simply using a “locally sourced”  fiber.
• Loomers, our selvedge line, produced on Rutti 50/60 years old looms. Fully regenerative cotton. The smell of heritage is perceivable. 
• The above two lines helps giving our customers the possibility of enhancing their collection with naturally produced products at a different level
• And… more to come in this direction….

You have done a lot of work on integrating sustainable technologies and materials . What would be the key ones that you feel are the most important and ones which also help you align with the goals of the brands.

We believe it is not a single action or implementation of technologies, fibers or activities which makes the difference. The will and the strategy of the company is making the difference when it comes to sustainability. Both ecological and social sustainability can only result from this KEY: company mindset, starting from the owner, going to all levels.

COVID TIMES – An Instagram Live Chat Show with Denim Experts

It would be not an exaggeration if we could call the year 2020 – a digital year, the people at different places used to zoom, Instagram, Whatsapp, and other social media and video conferencing apps to stay connected. Netflix and Amazon saw a massive spike in their subscription and then we thought to leverage this mode to talk about the denim industry, its issues, and the way ahead.

COVID TIMES was one of our initiatives through which we used the Instagram Live feature and Zoom Webinars to invite denim experts to discuss different subjects pertaining to denim, especially SUSTAINABILITY.

Efforts Towards Digitalisation Of Denim Sourcing and Trade Shows

Launch of Virtual Shows

In the month of July 2020, we had announced the launch of our first denimsandjeans virtual show where for the first time denim supply chain partners were got an opportunity to have a one to one video calls with their buyers in real-time. Leading denim companies including Artistic Milliners, Artistic Fabric Mills, Jeanologia, Tonello, Arvind Denim, Raymond UCO, Archroma, Garmon/Kemin, Deridesen, Ribbontex, Siddiqsons, Indigo Textile and Wiser Wash participated in the show.

Exhibitors were given virtual booths where they can enter and interact with the buyers visiting their booths, exhibitors were even able to share their brochures and screen with the buyers to present their collection digitally. The show also had over 12 denim sessions where leading denim experts shared their thoughts on the latest developments and design innovation through different talks, seminars and panel discussions.

The show got an unprecedented response from the industry and witnessed the participation of over 35 companies around the globe from the supplying side including mills, factories, chemical manufactures, technology companies, and consultants. Over 1000+ buyers from leading retailers/brands have logged in to the platform in two days to see the latest offerings and have also appreciated the effort to organize this one of its own kind of show.

Extending the success of the 1st virtual show, Denimsandjeans hosted the 2nd show virtual show in the month of October and another follow-up show in the month of November under a theme – Sustainable Interplay, propagating the joint and equal responsibility of both buyers and suppliers towards sustainability. Support to denim professionals affected due to pandemic

Denimsandjeans invited all the denim designers, washing experts, and sustainability warriors who have lost their work/jobs during the COVID pandemic. We all have witnessed a very disturbing time in the past few months, a lot of people left us, and a lot of professionals/workers were forced to leave their positions.

This invitation was for those denim professionals who wanted to provide services to the industry in terms of designing, washing, marketing, consulting, etc. These services are looked for by different global companies and through our network, we endeavored to reach their messages to such companies.

Global denim sales suffered a massive downfall but now we’ve been improving, slowly but gradually and the latest quarter results of several fashion giants including PVH and Inditex showed us a ray of hope and we are very hopeful that by the mid of next year, we will see this industry again back to its original shape, in a more sustainable shape.

We hope to do our small bit by bringing into focus such industry professionals who are trying to reinvent themselves. We will publish information about them on our Denimsandjeans website and such information will go across the world to our global subscribers and visitors and help them to be connected to the industry.

Artistic Milliners (AM) from Pakistan is one of the most reputed global denim conglomerates . With a history of over 70 years, the group has been continuously evolving and contributing to the development of textile and apparel industry in Pakistan and around the world. A strong focus on R&D and sustainability keeps the group always looking to the future. With a number of ground breaking initiatives , it has captured global headlines in the industry. AM’s contribution to global sustainability efforts and also CSR inspired us to know more what the company is doing in this direction and we spoke with Mr Murtaza Ahmed , Managing Director at Artistic Milliners , who shared his vision and achievements in this direction.

Artistic Milliners has done a lot on sustainable front. As you are both a fabric and garment manufacturer, the efforts have to be taken on both fronts. What are your focus areas for these efforts?

Artistic Milliners has a holistic approach towards sustainability: our major focus areas for the next few years are water stewardship, renewable energy and worker well being. We have set clear goals in each area along with arranging the necessary budgets and human resource to ensure we achieve our desired 2025 goals.

Crystal Clear Indigo as you defined for indigo dyeing – how does this process help to save water and chemicals and how much?

Crystal Clear is a revolutionary technology not only because it eliminates waste at the design stage but also because of its scalability. The process is open sourced at Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Library and we take pride in the fact that since 2017 a lot of companies have adopted this process and this method has really spurred the industry in a new direction.

The process reduces water consumption at the dyeing stage by 20%, chemicals by 70% and generates effluent that is 100% recyclable.

I believe you are already using almost 100% sustainable cotton for your entire denim fabric production. Is it so?

100% is an absolute figure but yes most of the cotton we source is BCI, Organic or PCW. This is also driven by clients demand. Also, cotton is not the only option. There are lots of alternative fibers available including tencel and reprieve etc. We have also worked on a project of Zero Cotton- in a bid to reduce denim’s industry dependency on water.

With Pakistan’s certifying its first organic cotton bale earlier this year, we are working with our strategic clients to adopt more homegrown organic cotton and also to increase traceability and transparency of our sourced cotton.

You were the first to get the Cradle to Cradle Gold certification for denim fabric. Are these fabrics now your regular production and how do you plan to develop them further?

Developing the World’s first Cradle to Cradle Gold certified denim was certainly a challenge because it involved many new steps and considerations. Following that, we have developed a range of other C2C fabrics in silver, bronze and basic lines and by 2025, we plan to cover all of our products under C2C umbrella.

Coming to garments, how is the Closed Loop Manufacturing project being undertaken by you and with what results?

Artistic Milliners was the first company in Pakistan to commence work on post-consumer waste denim in 2014. In 2017, we brought the PCW plant technology in-house. PCW is a great initiative- it has educated the industry and it has tackled the problem of waste to a certain limited extent. However, there are technological limitations in terms of strength and durability and the percentage of recycled content in PCW fabric.

Are Lasers, Ozone and other washing methods now a regular part of garment production for you? Any numbers on production through these processes?

Absolutely, lasers, ozone, and other machinery including e-flow machines are an integral part of our laundry. At the moment we have the largest laser capacity in Pakistan with a daily production of 30,000 pieces/day made from laser machines. We are also early adopters of the F.L.X operating model launched by Levi’s in 2018. Currently, 30% of our daily production is made with lasers with a goal to enhance this share to 90% within 2019. We are not only using lasers to automate the dry process function in the laundry but also to eliminate PP spray which we all know is hazardous for both the environment and operators who are applying this chemical. Same goes for Ozone and e-flow technologies.

Not only are we using the latest hardware technologies available to us we are also working with chemical vendors on reducing water consumption in the laundry through combining multiple steps in the washing process. We have had some good success here and I am happy to say that we have reduced our water consumption by 30% in the last one year while increasing output. If we quantify this that’s a saving of approximately 300,000 gallons of water per day!

What is about the Eco-Tech unit that you have developed. Is it the LEED-certified plant you have or does it mean upgradation of other units?

Our latest garment factory will be certified LEED platinum by early April this year. This will be Pakistan’s first platinum factory and builds on our commitment to develop world-class infrastructure. As you know we built Pakistan’s first LEED GOLD facility in 2014 which had a wonderful impact on the industry with other factories the following suit.

This latest factory will have a capacity of 25,000 garments per day.

What are some noteworthy features of this prospective LEED Platinum facility?

50% of the building’s energy requirement will be met by solar energy. The wastewater treatment plant installed is biological eliminating the hazard of chemical sludge at the source. 85% of the water is recycled and looped back to the system.

Eco-Tech is LEED Platinum and much more- in addition to ensuring that building’s environmental footprint is minimized, the facility is a hallmark of latest tech innovations housing both The SMART Laundry and automated stitching machines.

A state of the art daycare center over an area of 4500 sq. feet is being set up with consultants that are accredited both by the US Department of Youth and Family Services and US Department of Education.

In short, the Eco-Tech unit incorporates the finest of designs and technologies with regards to performance, sustainability, and human comfort.

Energy is a very important input in manufacturing. You are already working with wind and solar power. How much contribution to energy comes from clean sources for you?

We are certainly taking incremental steps towards clean and renewable energy targeting an additional 1.4 MW of solar in our factories. However, what is more, remarkable is that Artistic Milliners have invested in establishing a Wind Power Plant of 50 MW in Karachi. We are committed to investing more next year in solar, hydel and hybrid projects. Interestingly, Artistic Milliners as a group offsets 48% more greenhouse gases then what it emits.

Zero liquid discharge by 2020 is probably one of your sustainable goals. That would be a very good achievement. Can you also summarize your other sustainable goals for the next few years?

Zero Liquid discharge is a demonstration of how serious we are to minimize our water impacts. But this is not the endpoint. Water remains at the top of our sustainability agenda. For the next few years, we will be working with experts in the field to set science-based water targets in the context of our local catchments. On the social side also, we have set internal targets on promoting diversity and inclusion at our workplaces.

We are focused on driving our efforts on sustainability through automation and R&D. Industry 4.0 also holds a lot of answers on how the denim industry can reduce resource consumption and maintain quality and performance.

Can you elaborate your plans on the social front? Artistic Milliners is a leader on women empowerment – are there any new initiatives in-store with regards to furthering this cause?

Last year has been phenomenal in terms of furthering the cause of women empowerment at workplaces. The IFC, World Bank published a case study on Artistic Milliners promoting women in leadership roles. We were also recognized by The Financial Times for our pioneering work on imparting life skills training to worker women.

Currently, we continue to invest and expand in programs like Gap Inc. P.A.C.E. and levis Worker Wellbeing initiative to cover the majority of our women workforce. From T&D perspective, we are also establishing Artistic College of Technical Development which will be an educational wing of the company to train and educate the workers in several professional and personal development areas.

Besides, it produces suiting fabric, with a capacity of producing about 38 million meters of wool and wool-blended fabrics and over 47 million mtrs of denim.

Raymond is one of the pioneers of denim in India commencing its first denim operation in 1996. Raymond UCO Denim is a 50-50 JV between Raymond and UCO NV of Belgium and is a globally renowned producer of denim fabrics and garments. We spoke to its CEO, Mr Arvind Mathur, to understand what makes the company tick and helps it retain its premium position for over 2 decades.>

How do you think the denim industry has changed in last 5 years?

Overall the market has become very competitive because of which we see retailers offering better quality denim at lower price points with more frequent changes in collections.In terms of fashion there has been a move from denim as comfort wear to athleisure with hyper elasticity and enhanced softness for comfort. This has also to some extent triggered higher growth in women and kids segments. On the global supply chain front there is growing bias in favour of full package suppliers with brands and retailers looking to reduce contact points, geographical spread and various other complexities of a more fragmented sourcing base. Sustainability has certainly taken center stage with increasing awareness and concerns about the environmental impact of a resource hungry denim industry. From cotton to yarn to fabric to garment, every area is being looked into.

As you said Sustainability is the keyword most brands are repeating nowadays. Do you think it is now becoming a mainstream focus for them. How is Raymond preparing itself to achieve sustainable targets of global brands?

Sustainability holds the future survival of the human race and the earth as we know it. The awareness about environmental issues amongst the consumers, NGOs, brands and suppliers is increasing by the day and everyone involved is willing to contribute their bit to improving the situation. It is no longer a marketing gimmick but goes much much beyond. We use Blue Sign certified pre-reduced liquid Indigo. Improved processes allow cleaner production of denim with a positive impact on resource efficiency such as reduction of the sodium hydrosulfite usage by 60-70%, much cleaner water waste and less water usage. Also a major chunk of our cotton consumption is BCI (Better Cotton Initiative). We are a certified producer of PCW (Post Consumer Waste) cotton Denims in collaboration with I:Collect. Our product innovation is geared towards making optimal use of sustainable raw material and processes to further strengthen our sustainability credentials. In this regard we are working closely with both brands and suppliers of innovative material and machines.

What are the main focus areas of development for Raymonds apart from sustainability. How are you planning to differentiate yourselves from your competitors with your developments?

Apart from sustainability there are various other areas we are focusing on. Fabrics made from low torque yarns and super fine cottons to bring out an enhanced soft hand feel is a good example. We have also developed products using value added special blends & speciality yarns in conjunction with balanced fabric construction for ultimate comfort. We will continue to surprise our customers with our super stretch and hyper flex products with excellent recovery properties.

Pl tell us about your latest collection for SS’20 What are the key products that you want to bring to the market .

The latest collection portrays unisex denims in diverse concepts/moods and majorly covers

• A wide range of super-stretch denims (“FLUID” series) with super soft hand feel with ultimate comfort and free-movement through use of latest technology in spinning and weaving.

  

• A range of Bi-stretch denims (“360 DEGREE”) exhibiting sense of freedom of movement to meet the needs of the modern urban consumer.

  

• A collection of classic denim with a contemporary feel (our “VINTAGE” series) for the true denim connoisseur. Salt & pepper look with diverse cast and colour that are bold enough to stand on their own

  

• Eco friendly sustainable products ranging from our “LOW AQUA” range which considerably reduces water consumption during dyeing process to the Salt-free range (“PRISTINE” series) which completely eliminates use of hydrosulphite and brings down the load on effluent. The other highlight are products made from PCW cotton to decrease dependence on natural resources.

  

6. Do you see that the current trend of Fast fashion will sustain for very long. In which direction you see the denim industry moving to in the next 5 years?

The trend towards speed and agility will continue to grow. The rise of fast fashion is steadily shifting the traditional bi-seasonal collections to multi-seasonal collections and this is not going to go away. Shortening supply chains are playing a key supporting role in this phenomena.

However, owing to sustainability issues such as over-consumption and waste generation, there has been a certain level of backlash and this is building up. Hence going forward, while we don’t see slowing down of fast fashion anytime soon, we do certainly expect the industry to take more stringent measures towards use of sustainable raw material and circular processes. It will have to play a pivotal role in curtailing & solving the problem collaboratively. This will drive the development and adoption of new technologies, materials and business models to make fast fashion much more environmentally efficient and sustainable.

EFFORTS FOR SUSTAINIBILY

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

There are three major source of energy: Wind, Water and Light. To ensure the objective of Sustainability to be fulfilled, the company has taken following measures.

The energy which is being generated from WIND, the company has made arrangements through which they are harnessing wind power from an 80+ MW capacity Reducing 130,000 tones of CO2 emissions annually. The energy which comes by using HYDRO thermal technology, the company has established India’s first merchant hydro power plant, which reduces 800,000 tones of CO2 emissions annually and at last the company has installed solar power which is capable of generating 5MW of energy.

Recycling is very important and its relevance has been increasing by every passing day as the fresh resources are being falling short and also getting expensive due to several reasons. The company has a clear understanding as to how recycling is so important in the existing phenomenon and hence through GARNETTING process, it is recycling 900,000 kilograms of used fabric and saving the same from going to landfills.

WASTE WATER MANAGEMENT

Shortage as well as wastage of water, both are the major problems which are being faced by this Industry. Many Technological Companies have come up with many technology which claims to produce a pair of jeans with the least consumption of water. Meanwhile, manufactures should find out the processes of major wastage of water and solution for the same. LNJ has developed a Waste Water Management through which it is saving 1350 kiloliters of water per day.

I.Vintage Today

A. Originals

Heavy weight indigos demonstrating all the characteristics of the original blue denims from the late 19th century. Coarse and uneven yarns, uneven shrunk finishes in super dark shades. Selvedge denims with prominent twills nod to 100 year old products.

B. Extremes

Big twills and giant constructions have the appearance of old hand made denims. Coarse yarns plus big structures render these denims softy pliable with a surprising level of comfort.

C. Artisan

Denims and styles with empathy to the worker image. Dark indigos in vintage 2×1 and 3×1 denim with selvedge look as if they are the original worker pieces.

II.Boyfriend Girlfriend

Baggy Shapes for the girls and skinny shapes for the guys need vintage character discrete or aggressive in supple rigids, comfort and high stretch to achieve such diversity of need.

A. Comfort

The daily jean is a comfort item for a women in low level stretch, baggy boyfriend styles and vintage character  denims.

B. Supple

Both boys and girls require soft suppleness and all consuming comfort for a tighter fitting silhouette. vintage characters continues to be an import look with selvedge and high turned cuffs.

C. Stretch More

III.Future Denim

A. Raw

Clean twill denims made with a no shrink, no fake technology enabling you to market the jeans with NO LAUNDRY REQUIREMENTS there by saving gallons of water in the process. The customer can buy a jean with zero shrinkage that is soft and comfort in its unwashed stage. 

B. Recycle | Reuse

Throughout all the processes LNJ recycle yarns, reuse water, recovers dyes where possible without loss of product strength or compromising the visual requirement of the product.

C. Forever Black

Black black denims where the weft is sulphur black and the over dye process likewise are less harmful to the environment than indigo. Our black blacks stay black keeping their clear shade for longer.

IV.Super Denim

Fashion jeaners demand even more from their denims. Super softness. 360 degree Stretch for new active jeans. Super high stretch for contour shapes.

A. Super Soft

Soft to launch on the outside and super comfort on the inside. Super level of softness we achieve with modal, tencel, spun polyesters and viscose blends always with the right % of lycra to achieve the highest shaping stretches.

B. Super Sport

Denims are no longer just streetwear. They are required to be  active partners as well commuting and running, biking, skating, boarding – all require a 360 degree comfort stretch performance.

C. Super Shape

Contour jeans require tougher and higher levels of stretch to perform their super shaping requirements. A move from clean faced denims to delicate vintage indigos to achieve the look of a vintage jean with added shaping advantage.

V.Urban Blues

Denims with a difference that are not just for jeans but for fashion in romantic indigo. The shades are of the deepest hue, the patterns and finishes achieve fashion requirements.

A. Warm

Soft, Cuddly, brushed and warm on the inside keeping the indigo clean and fresh on the outside. Brushing breaks down the denim surface making it softer and easier to accept laundry techniques.

B. Tailoring

Light and mid-weight clean faced diverse denims with just a little stretch enable us to adapt denim to tailored shapes and urban styles.

It can be worn while doing any exercise, cycling, shopping or just relaxing at home. Additionally reflecting tapes on the legs are designed to be visible at night for safety. “Denim Active” contains Coolmax which is eco-made® fiber enabling moisture management and is made from 97% recycled resources such as plastic bottles and is claimed to be light as a feather.

While working out the body temperature increases and Coolmax helps to evaporate sweat which eventually keeps one cool and dry. The 360 degree bi-etch in a light weight fabric allows to make free body movements. It is soft and comfortable yet having a denim look and feel in a specially engineered second skin silhouette.

Denim Active has been awarded at Munich Fabric Start by Key-house (Innovation and Creativity Centre). It contains coolmax eco made fiber which is made from 97% recycled resources such as plastic bottles and ensures moisture management.

TCE is probably one of the 5 oldest denim company in Asia and celebrated its 60th anniversary . The company started manufacturing denim fabrics in 1969 when there only a couple of companies like Kaihara had begun producing denim within Asia in Japan. It has a rich history and tradition in denim and had a great mill running in Korea until the rising costs of production made it difficult to produce in Korea. Having continued and serve the industry for many years, the company took the decision a few years back to move to Vietnam- a country which has not only abundant , skilled and disciplined labor but also a growing local population and most importantly rising stature as an international sourcing country. Vietnam seems on course to clock USD 29 billion of textile and garment exports this year as per target and inspite of TPP losing steam, the country is going ahead on the strength of its infrastructure and potential benefits from other regions.

On a trip to cover the 60th anniversary of the company on their invitation a, it was great to speak to Mr Stanley Thwang . He was enthusiastic about their 60th anniversary and expansion of capacity. He mentioned about the long history of his company . He also spoke about one of the greatest strengths of his company – they make their own rope dyed machines . This is

“Our company started in 1956 but our denim production in 1969 and we were perhaps the third company in Asia after Kaihara and Kuroki to make denim fabrics. Besides we also produce our own Rope Dyeing machines . The entire designing , manufacturing and erection of the Rope dyed machines is done by our team. That is one of our strong points. Our latest machines has 22 dips which provides the dark indigo color the market needs. We are currently making 1.5 million yards per month in Vietnam and expanding to 3.5 million yards. We shall be having 5 Rope dyeing machines for this capacity. One of these machines will be optional and will be used for color dyeing including sulphurs , reactives, topping and bottoming”

The company showed some of their latest products which include the NETTLE Denim – made of nettle fiber from Nepal and which is a very eco friendly fiber using minimum natural resources and has anti bacterial properties , some special constructions including herring bone , functional fabrics inclding recycled coffee fabrics with moisture control functions and others.

On Vietnam, Mr Stanley said

“Vietnam market will be very booming. EU FTA is expected to be implemented by Jan 1, 2018 and European buyers have already started coming. Also the effect of China is there whereby there is a shift in buying from China to Vietnam and this is causing demand in Vietnam. Besides we will be going for a vertically integrated facility including garment manufacturing to provide full package facility to our buyers from US and EU. “
